On our way down to the gulf to attend a conference, Montgomery seemed like a good place to stop. A quick search revealed Vicki's was frequently voted one of the best, if not the best, burger in Montgomery. It seemed like it would be quick to visit and hop back on the road, so we agreed it would be the stop to try some local flavor. I'm glad it was! This place is clearly well-known and well-loved by locals. There was a line when we got there that persisted pretty much the entire time we sat and ate. That said, the line moved quickly and we got our food in less than ten minutes. Impressive and efficient operation for sure! They have a very simple menu with only a few choices done well. I do really appreciate that you can have your choice of a 4, 6, or 8 oz burger. I ordered a 4 oz burger and my parents ordered an 8 oz to split. You can get burgers alone or in a combo basket with fries and a drink, which is what we opted for. There is a self-service drink and condiment bar that has sauces like ketchup, honey mustard, and ranch or, as it is humorously labeled here, "fat girl ketchup." Lol. The service was friendly and patiently answered our couple of questions. Like I said earlier, food came out very swiftly and was fresh and hot. Everything was good! The burgers have an old timey diner burger feel and are seasoned quite well. I wouldn't say they're the best burgers I've ever had, but certainly they are very solid and worth a stop to try. The fries were very hot and crispy. The fat girl ketchup (aka ranch) was a bit of a disappointment - not super creamy, kind of salad dressing vibe - but that was the only real complaint I had. I saw memorial plaques indicating an upcoming celebration of life for I assume Vicki herself, who evidently passed earlier this year. It seems that she was very well loved. What a great spot Vicki's is! Reserve any judgement you may have when you pull into the parking lot because you'll probably already see a line out the door and that's how you know it's good! For us the line moved quickly. We placed our order and hung out until our number was called. Tables inside were distanced apart due to COVID regulations. We figured it was just as easy for us to take our order to go. We did notice that as people got their food, they would head directly to the condiments area to sprinkle (or in some cases drown) their fries in seasoning. I was particularly excited by that. Our number was called and I followed the example of the customers ahead of me. The smell of the seasoning hitting the hot fries was...PERFECTION. The patty was homemade and huge and seasoned to perfection. The fries didn't seem like frozen fries either. So freakin delicious! When they say it's Alabama's best burger they mean it! So after doing some research and seeing other people's reviews. Vicki's started out as a lunch van, hence the name. Now they have moved into an actual building which is a step up. However, this place is packed and has poor ventilation, I also think that the restaurant could be cleaner. For now the current building will do, but I think Vicki's could highly benefit from a new and improved venue. Additionally, I wish they had weekend hours. I remember a few years ago when this place was voted "Best Cheeseburger in Alabama" by al.com. Today, I got to taste it for myself. And I must say, I agree with the honor. First of all, this is a building, not a van nor food truck. Second, you choose between the 4 oz, 6oz or 8 oz freshly hand patted burgers cooked to order, piled high with mayo, ketchup, cheese, pickles, onions, lettuce and mustard. Next, choose chips or fries and your drink, if you are getting the combo. There are other items on the menu, but I came for the burger and only paid attention to that. My 6 oz burger was deliciously grilled to perfection and messily lavished with toppings that dripped off it. Not a sandwich to eat while wearing your Sunday's best. The fries were golden and crisp and could be seasoned to your heart's delight. Coke products were available along with tea. Moon pies and cupcakes from a locally owned shop were available for those with a sweet tooth. What makes this burger the best in the state? Two things come to mind as I answer this: taste and price. Old fashioned, hand-patted burger, side order and drink cost less than $9.00, even for the largest burger on the menu. Well-worth double the cost as other chain restaurants would've charged. The reason I contemplated 4 stars is partly b/c of price; the place looks like it should be really low overhead. The burger comes in choices of 4 oz, 6 oz, and 8oz. The toppings are cheese, mayo, mustard, ketchup, pickles, onion, lettuce, and tomato. The meat is a fresh, hand-made patty, cooked to order. This is as old-fashioned hamburger as you can get. The fries are an excellent compliment. Sweet tea was excellent! Also, you can easily get a burger, fries, and drink for under $10. Very affordable. I had 2 orders, and I was betting at least one of them would be wrong. WRONG? Yes, I was wrong. Absolutely! Came here on an a lunch break because I heard that the food was amazing. I was definitely not disappointed. I was feeling especially hangry and decided to order a 6oz cheeseburger, a hot dog, and fries. The meal also came with a drink. One thing that was great about this was the price. For all of that food I only paid roughly $10. The hot dog was nothing special and no different from any other hot dog I have eaten before. The burger on the other hand was enormous and very delicious! The fries were also very tasty and there was a plethora of dipping sauces to choose from such as ranch, honey mustard and ketchup. My only complaint seems to be a frequent complaint. The wait was very long and the ventilation was poor causing it to feel very hot and greasy. Vicki's lunch van appears to be very successful and seems like they could benefit from either a new venue or a overhaul of the current location to fix the ventilation and allow better handling of the crowds and subsequently the long wait time. This place is pretty crowded during lunch. They serve patties in 4oz, 6oz and 8 oz. The 8oz is the way to go and comes with fries and a drink for $9.25. Although it takes a while to get through the line, once you order, the food comes out pretty quickly. That's because the patties are not cooked to order, per say. Now, that is not saying they are sitting there all day, it's more like they cook a bunch at a time and pass them along to the line so they can make the burger. Besides that, the burgers are a messy delight. The bun was soft, tomatoes juicy, the holy trinity of mayo, mustard, and ketchup squirted on the buns leads to a pretty darn good burger. How can they get a burger patty taste so good? The fries were fantastic as well. I took a peek at the grill and it looks well seasoned, I'm guessing that's part of the secret. The restaurant: From outside it looks unassuming. But don't let that fool you. It's a typical mom and pop style place that focuses on food quality, not aesthetics. The employees were super courteous during my few visits as well. There's plenty space inside but it gets full quick, so come early. Long lines but WELL worth it. You'll probably open the door and already be at the back of the line, don't worry-it move fast so stick around and get a burger and fries. The 6oz was the perfect size, the 8oz is a big burger so be ready to get both hands messy putting that big ol burger away. Burgers come with cheese and all the fixins, you can of course ask to have things removed but live a little and just eat it like it comes. The FRIES were dang good, hot and crispy like they should be. Grab some season salt to toss on them off a table! Combo comes with burger, fries and a drink for less than $9, cant beat that.
