When we were looking for other options for our pup, a friend had highly recommended Dr. Kocen. Veterinary Holistic Center offers acupuncture, homeopathy, Chinese herbal medicine, massage therapy, chiropractic care, and physical therapy. When we had our initial consultation, it was definitely an elongated process; I really believed that there could have been more listening, as we felt that we were sitting in a lecture. With herbals, it's a trial-and-error type of situation, in which the combinations administered can constantly change, based on the response. Unfortunately, we felt that the medicine did not have any positive impact, and the follow-ups felt rushed and confusing. I think this place seems to be more for fur babies who are already in good health and whose owners want to explore additional services, just for the sake of it. My dog is being seen by a neurologist at a large practice who recommended a traditional Chinese medicine. Yunnan Baiyao is well documented for use with internal bleeding. She is suffering a serious spontaneous brain bleed. A neighbor recommended I call this practice and ask to have it filled through their dispensary or for guidance on where to purchase it. The woman who answered the phone said I would have to make an appointment first. Okay. I understand. It would be easy to coordinate with my vet if they do not want to sell directly to me. But clearly they don't work with other practices. However, even if I had the money to spend (in addition to thousands spent this week on an MRI and emergency care), I don't have time to wait on an appointment. I also live an hour away and don't want to put her through the stress of another car trip. But then I asked for suggestions on other outlets since I was having difficulty finding it online. One would think this practice would be expert on sourcing alternative medicine in the DVM or online and happy to give guidance when they are unable to help. One would think a receptionist would take a message and pass it to one of the nursing assistants or vets. Nope. She literally told me to google it. Legitimate businesses are often happy to offer some guidance in a serious situation when they are unable or unwilling to directly provide a service or product. Since seeing Dr. Kocen thus year, our cat has improved so much! After eight years of being on various medicines for her ears , asthma and constipation, which never helped, homeopathy has made a huge difference in her life. No more constant itching of her ears. Everyone here is very warm and professional. Dr. Kocen is excellent! He is extremely knowledgeable. After he figures out what's going on with your pet, he explains everything very thoroughly and in a way that's very easy to comprehend. He then discusses various approaches and shares his advice. He is very straightforward and practical; very genuine. My dog was suddenly unable to stand or walk and when propped up, he was knuckling. We went to Dr. Kocen for acupuncture (as he's been recommended by the neurologist) and just after 1 session with him my dog was noticeably better. After once weekly sessions for 3 weeks, my dog is now able to walk and stand on his own. He previously had joint issues previous to this for years and he is now not only recovered from his neurological/ spine disk issue, he is walking better than he has in years! A waste of time and money! Such a shame to have a good resource in our area, only to have a doctor who randomly just stops responding. We came here for my pup's allergies, sat through a long and expensive consultative info session where Dr Kocen braggadociously declares "you haven't tried everything until you've tried my approach." The approach requires a trial and error course of various natural Chinese herbs and supplements, along the way tweaking and monitoring completely based on your relaying your observations to the doctor via phone and email. The doctor doesn't touch the pup, barely even looks at the dog during the info session, there is no exam involved. After trying about 4-5 different supplements and tweaking dosage, there finally was visible improvement, which was great, we were on the right path seemingly, but still had quite a ways to go in curtailing scratching and licking, especially as allergy season approached. During our 4-month care under Dr Kocen, he selectively listened and sporadically returned calls, for which he apologized, however ultimately he just completely stopped responding. So we were desperate to continue the herbs, but needed attention from a holistic vet. Kocen completely disappeared, just fell off the face of the earth for us, so after almost 2 weeks of his not responding, our dog was getting worse, we started calling other vets in Northern Virginia who claim to be "holistic." Turned out they dabble in holistic medicine, but all refer you to Dr Kocen since he is considered the most knowledgeable. So much for that! Being knowledgeable is irrelevant, if he isn't responsive! I know everyone is very busy, but when we're under a doctor's care, you don't expect them to disappear during the times you need them the most. This doctor's behavior is unprofessional toward the human and uncaring toward the allergic animal. We are now trying conventional medicine and will be going to another holistic vet out of state, since no one in Northern Virginia apparently knows more than the only doctor who is unresponsive. I'm guessing if you're looking just for occasional acupuncture, this might be the right place for you, but for a continuous relationship, invest your efforts elsewhere. read more

Overall- slightly overpriced. However I have seen an alert mind from our rescue pup. We're having a hard time- how to approach healing the mind and have overcome some of her issues. She was kept in a rabbit hutch with brother, before they were rescued. Breeder/ Hoarder & Hunter sort of thing. She has been exhibiting PTSD, certain critters, noises, skittish about her reflection, noises, separation anxiety, uses our bed and the living room rug as a place to do her business, and other weird things. She's warming up to us and becoming familiar with a routine and the neighborhood. It was recommended- that we search for a Behavioralist. And I was on American Behavioral Holistic Veterinary, website and this business was recommended. On the day of our visit. My elderly (almost 15 years old!) rabbit and my older gal pooch love visiting Dr. Kocen! He has a fantastic way of explaining the benefits of acupuncture therapy to a "Western" ear, and we've been visiting him for mobility and quality of life for 9 months since he was recommended by my rabbit's primary care exotic vet. Few acupuncturists serve exotic animals, so Dr. Kocen is a real find. Dr. Kocen's staff is welcoming and caring, and the office is a relaxing oasis. My dog is NOT a fan of veterinary offices, and she hasn't a clue that this is one! She just thinks it's where she gets cookies. Dr. Kocen is magical that way. My dog has been a patient of Dr. Pollock's for about three years and I can't say enough kind things about her. My dog, Lola, was diagnosed with kidney disease and after doing a ton of research, I knew that we needed a holistic approach in addition to the traditional vet therapies (IV fluids, change of diet). Dr. Pollock worked diligently with me to develop a nutrition plan, kidney supplements and an accupuncture regimen. I credit her for stabilizing my dog's kidney levels. When I get the routine blood/urine labwork from the regular vet, I bring the results to Dr. Pollock and we keep a record of areas to improve or adjust. She's empathetic, incredibly diligent and thoughtful. I've emailed and texted her numerous times over the years with questions and she's always taken the time to send a thoughtful response. She knows her stuff and it's really reassuring when you have a senior dog with multiple health issues. I only wish the practice was a full service one. Our young dog had an athletic injury that wasn't healing after several months and many regular vet visits, x-rays etc. Our sweet girl had 3 acupuncture and 2 cool laser treatments. Dr Kocen is an amazing Acupuncturist. Extremely experienced and thorough. We took our Coton De Tulear to Dr Kocen as he is 15 years old and his health was starting to deteriorate. He had become extremely lethargic and had stopped eating. We literally thought that he was in his last days on this earth. After a few visits with Dr Kocen for acupuncture treatments he has regained his energy and has started to eat again. It's truly a miracle! Our 10 year old beagle has had a few neck problems over the last couple of years. (As we later learned neck problems aren't uncommon for dogs who have long bodies and short legs.) We first took her to our regular vet, who prescribed three different types of medicine to reduce swelling and reduce her pain coupled with instructions that our dog get plenty of bed rest to limit her neck movements until she was feeling better. Our vet also recommended that we consider accupuncture. So when our beagle began showing signs of a sore neck again (third time), with her head hung low and her tongue hanging out, we knew it was time to call the Veterinary Holistic Center to see if they could help. Our appointment was with Dr Pollock who is one of the most friendly and caring vets we have ever had the pleasure to meet. She started our appointment by examining our beagle while giving her some treats from time to time, and asked us some questions about her condition and previous treatments. She listened intently and then answered any questions we had about accupuncture. Proceeding with the placement of the accupuncture needles was all done very slowly and methodically. Our dog didn't seem to mind at all and never flinched. A short while after the needles were in place Dr Pollock provided electrical stimulation to them which never seemed to bother our beagle at all. She completed this by gently massaging our beagle's neck and spine. Before we left, Dr Pollock provided us detailed after care instructions and some herbal supplements that were designed to help with our dogs recovery from her neck injury. After we returned home with our dog she was quite content to just lay down and sleep. However, within about 10 - 12 hours of her treatment we noticed something amazing. Our beagle got up and started moving around like her old self with her head held high and fully engaged. She continued like her old self even after we weened her off of her medications. We continued to take our beagle back to Dr Pollock about every 8 - 10 days for the next two weeks. It's now been about 4 months since we first met Dr Pollock and our dog has not shown any signs of having a neck problem. However, we still take our beagle to see Dr Pollock to administer accupuncture about every 6 - 8 weeks not only for our own peace of mind, but because we honestly think it's helping her to stay healthy. In closing, Dr Pollock has been a true pleasure to work with, as well as the staff at VHC. They've always been courteous and professional and truly interested in keeping our pet healthy. read more

Our 14+yr-old-Lab (Galena) has rear legs that are completely useless to her. Our regular Vet suggested acupuncture and Dr. Kocen as a possible source of some comfort for her. We have been taking Galena to Dr. Kocen for well over a year and her quality-of-life has been improved dramatically. Dr. Kocen has never suggested that acupuncture will cure Galena, but his caring attitude and attention has brought her a quality-of-life that we never imagined possible. Dr. Khory is absolutely amazing and the most caring vet I have ever met! She's taken such great care of my Frenchie, Barkley! After a year of dragging his legs, doing an MRI that determined he has bad genes and surgery won't really help him much, I decided he's too young (6 yrs old) not to run around again enjoying life with his super hyper Frenchie sister. We decided to give Vet Holistic Center a try and met with Dr. Khory last summer or fall. We've been going every 2-4 weeks, depending on schedule... we've mainly done acupuncture, but have also done laser treatments and herbs. Last week when we went, Barkley was standing up right, walking around without dragging and popping up and down on his feet when he wanted water or heard a dog outside the dog. Dr. Khory was so impressed and touched by his progress, she got teary-eyed and told him how awesome he was. You just know how much she cares for animals and she remembers lots about her furry clients!
