Anyway, somehow I found out about this one and I put it on my calendar. And I'm glad I didn't talk myself out of going to it, as it was a something to do and I had fun. This was the inaugural year of this particular chili cook-off. It's an official event in chili cook-off circles; there's an actual organization that establishes rules for these events, and acting as an official event means that the winner gets to advance to another competition in Myrtle Beach, I think. The cost to the public was a $5 entrance fee for unlimited samples. They gave you There were at least 25-30 folks here competing and providing samples of their chili. While there were some I liked better than others, there wasn't a bad sample in the bunch. They had different categories for competitors to enter, and they also could enter a salsa. There were a few green chilis represented, which I think were my favorite, and a white chicken chili. I saw some unexpected ingredients in a few--chickpeas, potatoes--both excellent. There were at least a couple that I wished I could have bought to bring home because they were so good. People were friendly, and happy to have folks give their creation a try. There weren't a huge number of folks there, which was unfortunate. I hope that after we left more folks arrived so that they can keep it going for another year. This was held at a union hall with a huge parking lot so no problems there. If it takes place next year I'll be back.

Really wanted this to be a good place! Walked into an empty restaurant, no one greeted me. Sat down and waited for a menu or a server or anything! Finally someone came out and gave me a menu. I ordered a burger, and waited a long time. Finally it came up in the window and sat there. Food was served to me after I got up to get it myself. Cold, unappealing. I was the only person there and the service was horrible. There was a buffet set up that looked like it was there all day. I Really hope they can get their act together. I would love to help Vet's, if that is what they are doing. But, they won't do much good as things are now. read more

My husband and I tried the senior lunch which was really cheap but very tasty. The green beans were definitely home made and not out of a can. Our waitress was Kenya and she was very pleasant and made me fresh coffee because I am a big coffee drinker but I like a fresh pot. A couple of people stopped by our table to make sure everything was ok so we had a very good experience with no waiting at all. Go and help out the Vets. read more

Try this place out on a random Saturday morning. First, let me say that it is hard to find as the…read morebuilding looks like some type of converted commercial construction warehouse space prior. It has very low ceilings very few windows and from the street. There's only one large sign to see it. Even on the building itself there are no signs on it not even on the door. Parking here is a little unusual as there is some parking in the front that I think you can park in that is shared with the florist. Otherwise, you have to drive to the back to the very construction looking area to find parking. Once in let me say that the staff was very friendly there was quite a bit of them, and we were seated immediately. Unfortunately, again going back that I think this used to be some type of a commercial space converted. The bathroom door is open directly into the dining space and there is no separate hallway for it. We were seated in the very last booth closest to the restrooms. The staff was very friendly, patient and attentive, so this was fantastic. There is a sign that says that this is family run by the Barrera family. And it's so great to know that we can patronize a small business. The food came out very very quickly, which was fantastic so no complaints there and it came out piping hot, which is even better. The portions seem really big however please note that the hashbrowns alone took up half the plate. So it would have been nice to get a third option available on the menu to put with your dish for the plate for example of fruit option even for my Benedict or a fruit option or another vegetable or carb for that omelette. There was so much food that we took some of it home as well primarily due to the hashbrowns. The only real complaint is the coffee here. It is so thin and it is basically brown colored water that after this we went across the street to Starbucks to get real coffee. I know this place is new and is definitely trying to get its footing so I look forward to it succeeding and then being able to really improve upon the space or better yet get a better building and location.
