Please do not hire this company and run the other way, if you see their vehicles! They employ reckless drivers that leave the scene of accidents they cause, with no regard to the persons or property damaged by their actions. As a military dependent and military spouse of 25 years it has been my experience that true vets help in a crisis, not flee. I've had the pleasure of having my household compost serviced by Veteran Compost now for about a year. This is true oh a 5 star company. Veterans comes to my condo once a week to pick up my compost bin and give me a new one. In the year of service they have never once been late, and they have been accommodating and courteous when I have been at fault. This incredible commitment to customer service is evident by Fritz, the owner, who responds promptly to email and service pause requests. I wish all companies were this good. By the way--Fritz was able to work out an arrangement with our condo building. The arrangement allows them to contract directly with the condo building to service individual units--meaning I leave the compost bin out every week and they pick up and leave a new one in front of my door. It is wonderfully easy to do, and I've noticed our trash room in the building is much cleaner, bugs are less and the building has less waste in general. Would highly recommend this company and the commitment to the environment. read more

Great service! I never realized how much of our garbage was actually food waste that could be composted, but with VC coming by each week to haul it away to make garden soil, I'm converted. We have used Veteran Compost for over a year and couldn't be happier with their service. We chose them over other compost companies because we could put almost anything in our bins, including bones. Other compost companies are more restrictive and we liked that with fewer restrictions, we could easily fill our bins without having to think too much about what's allowed and what's not. Fritz is great at communicating with customers - sending reminders to put bins out, letting customers know when their might be weather delays and occasionally sharing info about special events at partner farms. He and the drivers are also super friendly. Fritz even let us stop by his house on a weekend last spring to pick up extra compost and worm casings when we were getting our garden ready. On top of that, the business supports veterans. And as a customer, you get two bags of compost each year to use in your garden or they'll donate it to a community garden if you can't use it. I've composted with Veteran Compost for three years and highly recommend them! The customer service, including email updates from Jeffrey and now Fritz, is excellent. The cost of weekly pick-up is super affordable compared to other DMV providers, and you're supporting not only zero waste but a company with a social mission. I appreciate how Veteran Compost has experimented with its bins and sustainability over the past few years, e.g. originally cleaning the bins out with water but then switching to compostable liners to cut down on water usage. The organic composted soil you get twice a year is a nice perk, especially if you have a garden to spread it over -- it's a little too dry for my potted plants. I am so thankful for Veteran Compost! They come, rain or snow, once a week and pick up my household compost. They send regular updates and reminder emails so that I don't forget to put my bin out. The bin is big enough to handle a week's worth of food waste/compostable material and the lid has a tight fit so it never smells. My regular trash has decreased in volume with the added benefit of no weird smells from the trash can, so there are a lot of pluses to this. I'm a huge fan!! I have used the Veteran Compost service for quite a few months now. They not only provide a service that most of us should take advantage of, but they also provide excellent customer service. Since using them, the amount we throw away in the regular garbage is now 1/4 to 1/2 of what it used to be, so for that reason alone - it's worth it. We've been using Veteran Compost for two and a half years now, and we are very pleased with the service. The consultation call to get us set up was quick and easy, and they answered all of our questions. They are very good at communicating with their customers, sending weekly reminders and including updates about what is happening with their business and at their farms. They are flexible about skipping pick-ups when you are out of town, which is nice. And the two small bags of compost that you receive as a benefit each year is a great little perk. Been a Veteran compost customer for over year and we intend to stay that way for as long as we live in DC. They are super reliable and responsive. The cost is extremely reasonable especially shared amongst members of a group house. At one point, I switched credit cards and forgot to change my payment method for VC. Friends had been using Veteran Compost for ages, so about a year ago, we tried for our home, which is in Maryland near the Beltway. We have been so pleased. They come once a week, very reliably, very early in the morning. They pick up a bin from your porch and leave an empty, nice-smelling one. Just put your food scraps in the bin (in the bag)--anything that goes on your plate, so it includes bones, meat scraps, also paper plates with food residue on them and food-used paper towels! No liquids and no human/animal feces, but, well, duh. They are reasonably priced, and we feel good knowing that our waste is being used well. Plus, twice a year we get bags for fertilizing/refreshing our garden/yard, and the business supports and hires veterans. Fritz emails every week a reminder, and you can email him directly if you are going out of town. We are very pleased with them, and highly recommend them in person, so why not on Yelp? read more
