Delivery was fine and driver was helpful guiding material onto tarps. The problem was the material - dyed brown so called mulch. The mulch, purchased at the super preimum price of $35.99 a yard, was junk. It consisted of metal shards, angle iron, softball size chunks of asphalt, cigarette butts (dozens) and other non mulch trash. This resulted in many hours aof raking , picking and separating out the trash that was included and cost us significant time and money to correct so it was at all usable. Owner Jeff - don't write a response making excuses and offering a pittance of price adjustment for "good will" while making excuses. When you charge these kind premium prices it fair for a custoer to expect a premium product rather than garbage you deliver - and I have purchased the ever declining product for too many times for it to be a one off situation. Shorting us part of our order plus blocking our garage (despite our instruction) should be easily resolved, IF you handle the situation correctly and professionally. My husband's day off was ruined; he angrily left a bad review when he came home. This meant he would have to work that day to clear the driveway plus another unplanned weekend whenever the remaining mulch came in. Unaware of his review, I called the company to see if they could resolve the situation. The owner Carlene remembered the issue and said she would IMMEDIATELY correct it that day, Friday. She offered to comp us for the portion of the order we received, then later offered to bring the other few yards free. That promise seemed nice, and we were both happy. However, over 5 days later (NOT FRIDAY), the company had done nothing - started no refund, no re-order, no invoice reversal. I had left a follow-up message the other day, which said it would be returned in 4 hours (it wasn't). Anyway, after a couple of calls, I spoke with someone. The owner sent me a message today saying that she would not give us the remainder of our prepaid mulch, nor give any refund: she noticed my husband had left a bad review. My husband, not aware that the review was still up, IMMEDIATELY deleted it after pulling over in his car. Keep in mind the owner still has yet to do anything to fulfill her promises 5 days after the fiasco was supposed to already be handled. I'm not sure why she did not kindly ask him/me to remove the original bad review and chose to use scathing language. Knowing the review was removed, she continued to berate my husband for ever leaving a review (then me for not being my husband's keeper!). She used foul language and said she would withhold the rest of our mulch. Mulch and Stone 1. Needs to apologize. I can't believe the owner literally wrote: "The miniature husband gets home." (what??) "Poor baby can't park his car in his garage so he throws a fit." (did she even ask why we both need access to the garage for our cars and little ones?) "Enjoy your Mulch because you're not getting any more from me." (but we paid for it! I need to figure out a credit card chargeback if this is really happening) 2. Needs to make good on their promises when correcting their mistakes. The refund should have been processed Friday afternoon as promised, with a call made to reschedule Friday or Monday. Now, timing adds 2 extra weekends to our project. Doing nothing is lazy and unprofessional. 3. Listen to where the customer wants the mulch. In talking, we did not specify "anywhere." On the phone, I said like usual we had a place we use and would point it out to them, no special instructions (not no instructions). They never knocked like they usually do and just dumped the mulch, blocking the garage. Since they had dumped half when I realized it, I frustratingly said they could dump the rest, since a large pile is the same as a very large pile when everything is mulched the same day. 4. Deliver what the customer paid for and not expect them to be "happy" if they deliver the rest of the mis-measured load the following week. I felt bad that the team tried to pull mulch from another customer's order several times to make ours look bigger. It was still short, and they said the truck filler had not been consistent with his job recently. Watch out. They said they could come back with a few more yards, but I suppose it's not happening. 5. Refund the customer if you can't fulfill the order. So far, they have taken our money without satisfying the order, specifically denying a refund as retribution for the original two-sentence (?) bad review. Friday's review does not exist now, but I suppose my husband should have kept it up. 6. Acknowledge that a customer might need to be reminded to take down a bad review. The customer might also choose to keep a bad review up until the situation is rectified. So far not one promise has been filled or even started on the company's end. I don't know what they are expecting from us if the owner cannot act professionally or follow through on her end. read more

First time ordering from this company. I placed an order online which was confirmed after correcting an address that caused a glitch the first time. I called the next day, and no one was in the office the entire day on a Friday to confirm the delivery timeframe. Come Monday, the day of the promised delivery, they say they had some issue confirming the order, but they failed to call me to address the issue the Friday before. They left me completely hanging. Then instead of trying to work out the perceived computer glitch related to the first credit card processing, the manager there decided to simply void the order. They didn't keep their promise in keeping the confirmed order even though it was fully paid for, nor calling back as they stated they would to work out the issue. Instead, they emailed a so called shady 'third party' authorization request that would have you enter your sensitive credit card information into some unknown third party system where it can be exploited by god only knows how many affiliates, even though it was not needed because I confirmed the bank authorized the credit card payment. Overall, their business philosophy, reliability, and practices were unprofessional to me in my opinion. I cannot recommend them and will certainly never try to use them again. read more

Ordered sand and topsoil, and left a detailed note on the order to dump together on the tarp. Apparently they "get their topsoil from somewhere else" so they were delivered separately. Even spoke with the driver (was on my way to school with the kids the morning AFTER they were supposed to deliver) and reminded him to dump directly on top of the sand. Came back to find that he didn't even bother to dump on the tarp. So now I have a pile of dirt in the middle of my gravel driveway which will take me hours to move...and then I'll have to order gravel to cover up. Get your bulk products elsewhere. read more

This is an updated review. Ordered gravel and stone dust from Mulch and Stone. Ordering was easy, price was ok, and delivery was on time as promised. That said, I gave 3 stars because the material was mixed, not separated, which made it unusable for it's intended purpose and of poor quality. Instead of the dark blue stone dust chips, I received a version of compacted sand. Technically stone dust, it's the type used by highway departments. Ok for a base layer, not for finish which is what I needed. The gravel was basically white drainage gravel, not the expected dark blue 57A. After posting the review, received a prompt and polite response from Mulch and Stone noted a refund would be issued as a gesture of good will. A token refund was issued after I inquired (perhaps coincidentally?), but didn't really solve my issue, so dropped a star. Recommend keeping these issues in mind if you use Mulch and Stone. read more

Was looking for a full truckload of 57 rock for delivery. Over last weekend and even on Monday morning the cost for the rock alone was $1180 (22 tons). As I was completing checkout to order this on Monday, suddenly the cost of materials changed to $1298! Fortunately I checked the totals before completing the order or I would not have noticed this change until it would be too late. After this 'incident' I decided to check out the company's reviews and was appalled by them. I will not be using these folks ever. Incidentally, I just ordered a full load of 57 rock for delivery 8/8 for under $1,000 from a reputable supplier. Saved by the driver. I ordered 5 ton of #57 blue gravel. In the special instructions I asked to be texted at my cell phone number when the truck left for the delivery. The truck arrived at 0745 26-Apr which caught me indisposed as there was no text as requested so I had no idea when they would be showing up. The driver did text and called my when he arrived (vs when leaving the stone yard). I rousted my wife and son out of bed and had them help move cars. We got the cars out of the way, had the stone dumped, all good. As I was thanking the driver for the short wait, he was on the phone with the main office. I overheard the person on the other end say something to the effect of "why didn't you just dump it on the driveway and go?" To which the driver replied "oh, they would have been pissed" as the driver could see that dumping it where he originally had pulled in would have blocked in all 4 cars with no way out short of driving over our neighbors yard. (Not an option) The gravel was exactly what we ordered And expected. The gravel did arrive wet which obviously weighs more than dry. In fact gravel is roughly 0.7 cubic yards per ton dry and 0.6 cubic yards per ton wet, conservatively speaking. That's 14% (or more)water weight when wet, ouch. So ordering 5 tons: Dry: 5 tons * 0.7 cubic yards/ton = 3.5 cubic yards Wet: 5 tons * 0.6 cubic yards/ton = 3.0 cubic yards So the safe bet for a job is to assume, like Safeway hamburger, that the material you order will be fully water saturated thus calculate your coverage and consider the 14% to 20% loss of material volume (stone different than sand!). As long as you do this and do your cost comparison based upon weight vs volume, things should work out. The hard part is that since you did not inspect the material at the load site while on the scale, and with Mulch and Stone you do not get a copy of the bill of lading, there is a lot of trust involved. Did you really get your 3 cubic yards (or more)? Are you willing to build a cubic yard or half cubic yard box to measure, and shovel everything twice to be sure? Is it easier/safer to pay a slightly higher amount (?) and get the product directly from the stone yard and watch it load or minimally get a bill of lading? It is a balance of a hassle factor vs trust-risk. The good news for us is that based upon my area and depth calculations, we received what we ordered. It filled the area as expected and also as expected, we have about two wheel barrels full of gravel extra. (Don't be lazy, do the math 2 times) And no fair complaining if you are just eyeballing it. Make a box or measure and calculate your fill before you "throw stones". So based upon our experience, we very likely be ordering the concrete sand we need for the leveling layer this weekend. I seem to order our firewood from a different place each year in search of a decent balance of size, quality and dryness. I had discovered Mulch and Stone via a web search last year but was hesitant with their prices being on the higher end. Since I knew a lot of places this late in the season would be a lot less likely to have seasoned wood, I opted to try Mulch and Stone this year because they offered the Kiln dried option. I ordered a half cord of the kiln dried wood online on a Friday afternoon and it arrived on Monday mid morning. The quality of the wood is very good with only a few pieces needing to be split into a more manageable size. Overall I am very happy with the ease of ordering, quickness of delivery and dryness of the wood. Ordered compost and was delivered promptly. As I started to distribute, I noticed a large amount of shredded plastic bags in the compost. My hand was easily full after one minute of picking. I immediately contacted Mulch & Stone about this issue and expressed my concerns for my families health as this was intended for our vegetable garden and did not hear anything back. I contacted several more times without response only to get a response by replying to the owners many requests for feedback. I was told my other emails had gone to spam filter. Interesting... I was immediately told that the supplier was contacted and it was possibly a stray bag has flown into the batch and that there was no issues with a little plastic in the soil. I replied again with numerous pictures of different bags, plastics, wires, carpet fibers and other debris and was told this was the first time they have heard of this and they wanted to talk to their supplier again. That was the last time I heard back... My requests for updates have gone unanswered. After doing some digging, it looks like others have had this problem before me so I was lied to about the first they heard of it. I tried to give them the option to make this right, but they pretended it was an isolated incident and never got back to me. I am now stuck with a pile of trash filled compost that I'm having to slowly dispose of through trash pickup. Avoid this company! read more

UPDATE: The company finally called me back to tell me they had seen my review and would no longer be helping me resolve this, and then hung up on me. I called back several times and was hung up on each time. When I finally got through, I offered to update or delete my posted reviews if we could resolve the issue. I was not listened to, and was rudely hung up on again. And again. I contacted the owner directly and received a curt reply saying I had received a full refund--I paid with a credit card and would certainly have contested this charge--but nothing about removing the waste-filled dirt pile they dumped in my driveway. I am posting it as a free item on local marketplaces in hopes that someone else can find a use for it. ORIGINAL POST: I ordered 10 cubic yards of "highest quality" "organic compost" to fill a raised bed garden and a few other spots on our property. What I got was a pile with TONS of plastic garbage. See photos for samples l picked out from the very few wheelbarrows of it that I carted before I realized how polluted it was. I called the company and was told they would call me back. 30 minutes later I called again and got no answer so I left a message. When they returned my call, I was told that they have three compost suppliers in the area and that yes, a little bit of plastic bag garbage had blown into the compost but they had tried to get it out and it's "just some plastic and not anything harmful." I respectfully corrected both claims, offering to send the attached photos to show the real extent of the contamination. I also made the point that PLASTIC POLLUTED SOIL Is not "organic" and more importantly it is NOT SAFE FOR GROWING FOOD. I was told the owner would call me and they would make it right. Four hours later and still nothing so I called again. I was told the owner was still busy, that they would follow up athis is not how they do business and I should have a nice weekend. After years as a loyal customer, I regret to have to part ways and warn future potential customers: if you're willing to receive poor quality product with no response from the company to your concerns, by all means, give M&S your money. As for me, I am now working with a competitor and could not be happier. Last year, I ordered M&S topsoil compost mix that they said would be "perfect for raised vegetable beds." However, what was delivered contained broken glass, melon-sized globs of clay, and what looked like construction debris. I contacted M&S and spoke with Carleen and sent pictures what what was delivered. She was initially helpful and explained that they'd had big problems with multiple orders from a new supplier. They replaced the order with the same supplier who sent the same substandard product that was entirely inert dirt and clay and bits of wood and debris. No amount of amendment would revive the dirt and I lost an entire growing season. Weeds wouldn't even grow in this garbage. The only good news is that it killed off a ton of mint I've been trying to eradicate. I asked M&S to remove the dirt they sold me. That was when they stopped responding. I've called many times but you just sit endlessly on hold. When I finally got an answer from Carleen, she sounded very stressed, was pretty rude, but said Jeff would contact me that day. Well, that was a week ago and my calls and e-mails are being ignored. I won't let M&S ruin another growing season, so I am now having to pay someone else to remove and dispose of 3 c.y. of whatever dead dirt and trash this is. Jeff, please don't bother responding with your usual "call us so we can fix this" line - no one answers your phone. If you really want to make this right, respond to my many emails with your commitment to refund the cost of my order and reimburse the cost of removing and disposing of the garbage you sold me. I think you and Carleen are genuinely good people running a business as best you can during challenging times. But you burned me and then ignored me. Forget buying bags of mulch for your gardening needs. I have purchased bulk mulch from Mulch and Stone, LLC ( Centreville, VA) for the third time and highly recommend this company. How often can you make a call for a delivery and be offered that delivery within hours? I chose next day delivery and the driver called to say he was on his way, ETA, 20 minutes. The driver was very professional, very safety conscious and mindful of power cables overhead all while dropping the 5 cubic yards exactly where I needed it. The mulch? I got a truck load of black mulch of the highest quality, dyed and shredded perfectly. You cannot beat this.. time, price and quality all-in-one. read more

I ordered firewood online on Sunday and had delivery on Tuesday without any issues. It was quick and painless. They just back up a truck onto your driveway and dump the wood. You'll get a call from the driver when they are 10 minutes away so just make sure the area is already prepped. It took about an hour to move a full cord from the front of the house to the back (with the help of my awesome neighbors). The wood quality isn't the greatest but I guess we will see how it burns when the time comes. I also have nothing compare it to because this is the first time I've ordered wood. I'm not sure how it compares to other suppliers but given the Yelp reviews, M&S had the best ratings. I'd hate to see what the other guys are using. read more

Update: I have given these folks a good rating before, but once again their big truck left two crushed areas of grass that had to be replanted (by me). I complained and no one replied. Further, they dropped the load blocking my wife's car, even though there was room enough to the side. The mulch they delivered was cleaner than other years (one year it was full of litter), but it still has pieces of plastic that must be picked out. The mulch is "old" meaning it has largely degraded to soil. I am unlikely to use these people again. read more

If you buy seasoned firewood from Mulch and Stone, beware. A significant portion of the 1/2 chord of seasoned wood I received had fungus or mold on it and nearly 100% of the wood was covered in dirt. To receive firewood in this condition is unacceptable. The website advertises a much different image of the firewood. I called Mulch and Stone almost immediately (within 24 hours of receiving the wood) and emailed them multiple pictures of the wood with the fungus, mold, and dirt on it. I requested an exchange and/or refund. They reviewed the images, and told me that no firewood can be exchanged or returned. They mentioned to me over the phone to 'knock off the mold,' and that the firewood I received is within industry standard. If it is indeed industry standard to have mold, fungus and/or dirt on all your firewood they did not set that expectation when I called to inquire about the firewood in advance of purchasing it. I contacted the company and sent the pictures asking for partial refund but they ignored my request for reasons unrelated to my complain and the quality of their product. Horrible experience. Ordered ten yards of mulch, maybe got 7. My neighbors all agreed the delivery was short. I spoke to them twice and they promised to call me back, never did. Third time I called the person told me they definitely delivered ten yards and wouldn't discuss further. I've been doing my own mulching for years, picking up my own mulch in my truck. I know what it takes to finish my yard. What they delivered is not what I paid for and they ended up have terrible service on top of it. Buy elsewhere UPDATE - I ordered an additional 5 yards of mulch from a different provider. It cost me more per yard, but they delivered the same amount as this place claimed was 10. I ordered a half cord of seasoned wood at about 6pm on a Tuesday, wood was delivered in my driveway Thursday morning. Nice quality mixture of hard woods to include cherry...and, not sure what happened, but this is the largest half cord I've ever received! Every piece is cut to about 16 - 18 inches...perfect! Ordered Mulch and topsoil compost mix. Mulch did have some plastic in it. But the topsoil mix had very large pieces of clay in it. I called and they sent out a replacement but it also was mostly clay with large pieces of clay not as large as first but still had to screen and buy some amendment to add. It also had plastic bottles, 4 inch rocks, large sticks and other items in soil. I had about 18 CF of debris from screening 2 yards of soil, so 1/3 was trash and 2/3 of soil had to have amendment added for it to be used. read more

What a nightmare. Maybe good for a one-time order, but DO NOT order a second delivery and expect it to match. Matter of fact do not order based on the photos and expect it to match. Very misleading business practices. This place basically is a truck delivery service, they don't own the products, and they drive around to different places and deliver many distributors products. However, they don't disclose that. So if you order 1 thing and need more. You are screwed because they won't match. And they're response was "This product is made by nature...it changes without any notice" I'm sorry what? Rocks were here on this earth before all of us. They don't wake up in the morning and become shape shifters. You change your distributors. When I reorder something off Amazon - I get the same product and if I don't. They take responsibility, refund my money and resolve the issue. So here the story begins...#2TonsofRockinMyDriveway My fiancé and I ordered a delivery of 3 tons 3/4 in. river rock in September. When we came home we were very surprised to find 2inch stones in our driveway. However, because of their "no refund" policy and we were overall okay with the size we proceeded to shovel 3 tons of rocks into 4 different flower beds. That was until we ran out mid-project. So about a month later I order 2 more tons (of the exact same product) so we could finish the current bed that was 1/4 complete. I get a call the afternoon of the delivery (a Friday I took off to be home to inspect the product) from Carlene explaining they have an issue with their distributor and they wouldn't be able to come until Saturday. I explained my concerns with the original product size and it potentially not matching the second delivery, I even offered to send her photos. Unfortunately, I couldn't take off Saturday as well, but when I got home I was unpleasantly surprised with 2 tons of river rock dumped in my driveway, a fraction of the size of the first order. Tiny little stones - probably the 3/4 inch that we didn't get the first round. I called Mulch and Stone and left them a voicemail as they were now closed. No follow up. I call beginning of the week and explained the issue and was instructed to send an email with photos and explanation. Again. No follow up. After a few more calls and messages she finally gets back to me. She proceeds to haggle with me, trying to convenience me to keep the incorrect product and persuading me that the stones can be used. She even asked if I could give them to my neighbors!? Seriously. After going back and forth she agreed to resolve and send me a new delivery and someone out to pick up the stones. Delivery finally came (two weeks after my family hasn't been able to park in the driveway) and it was even more wrong. Luckily, I was there that day and asked the driver to inspect the stones before I had two piles in my driveway. The stones were HUGE - some 3 inch mixed in with 6-8inch. The driver and I looked at all 3 deliveries...NONE of them matched. He agreed with me, apologized and we decided he should take them back. I called Carlene while he was still there and she did not answer! Texting me "I'm not sure what to do now." [Insert blank stare emoji face here.] Meanwhile, week 3 I'm still waiting for her to send someone to pick up the second pile. I send her a follow up text and she confirms someone is coming. I was home all day - no ever showed up. She then offers to come herself and inspect the stones. As soon I say of course come anytime. She ghosts me again. NO RESPONSE. I've sent her numerous follow ups and finally I get an email today telling me they delivered the correct products and made an effort to resolve and basically they weren't sending anyone out to pick up the rocks. They said they wouldn't be held responsible because of the time in between my order and again she reiterated that they could indeed be used. Carlene, you do not live at my house and are not authorized to make these decisions. Thank you for your input. These people are so unprofessional. I looked up their Terms of Service on their website and found a very interesting statement. "We do not warrant the quality of any products, services, information or other material purchased or obtained by you will meet your expectations, or that any errors of service will be corrected." WOW. You guys seriously put it out there and are ok with running that kind of business!? My wife and I ordered compost, but what they delivered was manure. Feces. Poop. After trying for days to talk to someone about the problem (their automated system kept dropping our calls before getting to speak to anyone), we finally got to talk to a woman in their Virginia office; the Maryland office is who delivered the manure, but we couldn't get hold of anybody there. This woman claimed to be the owner. The woman proceeded to yell at my wife and call her stupid ("how stupid can you be?!" were her exact words). This woman insisted that: 1) we ordered manure, which, according to our amazon receipt, is not true (according to their website they do not offer manure); and 2) that it also contains ACTUAL "HUMAN EXCREMENT" (again, her words). I can't make this stuff up. I'd like to think that she merely said this as some form of shock value during her incoherent rant, but after experiencing how they do business, I can't say with any degree of certainty that she's wrong. For all we know, she just said the quiet part out loud. An utter lack of professionalism and unwillingness to make good on their mistakes is alarming enough; but then when you consider the verbal abuse that my wife received, there's no way that I can recommend this company. Have used them in the past and had been pleased with their services. This season however I had a very bad experience with them. They failed to deliver on they day that we'd scheduled and when we rescheduled for the following week, the delivery driver called a day early to say they were on route to drop it off. When I called the office to inquire about the mix up I was told "I was wasting their time" and hung up on. They delivered the wood and charged me despite being told by the owner that they canceled the order. In addition the wood is not cut well and many of the logs are are rotten and/or not seasoning well. Also, all the wood is covered in dirt for some reason. While advertised as "The Home of Free Delivery", your order will not necessarily be delivered to your home. I was quite surprised to come home late afternoon on the scheduled day for the mulch delivery and see my driveway was still empty. I was even more surprised to call & find out that the mulch was delivered. Interestingly, it was Carleen who asked me to check if any of my neighbors had mulch in their driveway. Sure enough, a neighbor 3 doors down had the mulch I ordered. Carleen even noted to me this wasn't the first time a delivery to the wrong address was made. While Carleen said they would send another driver to move the mulch, that wouldn't happen until the next day, meaning an imposition to my neighbor, besides myself. My neighbor & I ended up moving 1/2 of the 9 cubic yards that evening, because at this point I wasn't sure if Mulch and Stone would actually come to move it. However, Jeff & Carleen came out themselves to move the rest of the mulch late morning the next day. Afterwards, I asked for a small refund off the $219 bill for the imposition of my neighbor and my time and labor. All Jeff would offer is $50. However, that never came to fruition. I had to call my credit card company regarding that. Jeff and/or Carleen had to gall to tell the cc company that they delivered the mulch to the right address, conveniently omitting the fact it was not delivered to the right address on the date it was to be delivered. Don't fall for the 'Free Delivery' hoax. Its worth paying a tiny bit more to ensure your order is delivered to the right address. read more

I'm a many-time return customer who today took delivery of a cord of firewood, and was hugely disappointed. It was good hardwood, but badly split and cut in highly variable lengths, from 8" to 26". Many of the split pieces are really too big to fit into my wood burning stove -- indeed little effort seems to have been taken to split the pieces into usable sizes. What were you guys thinking? How exactly is this stuff meant to burn, as much of it is too big to light and will need to be resplit? Ridiculous. I'll have to look for another supplier.
