I visited a shop in my neighborhood that sells local and specialty foods, and they were selling a variety of Veruca chocolates. They didn't have the salted caramels I wanted, so I picked up a cocoa bomb by Veruca Chocolates instead. I got a few of these last year and they were fun. And this one is blinged out with brightly colored, glittery chocolate, so definitely I had to try it. When I prepared the cocoa bomb, I decided to make it as decadent as possible and went with cream as the liquid. It was too large to put in a mug and pour the hot liquid on top, so instead I put the cocoa bomb in the pot. It had a lot of cocoa inside as well as some marshmallows, and the of course the chocolate of them sphere itself made it all the more rich. The resulting cup of cocoa was deliciously chocolatey and thick. It made two five ounce cups, and given how rich it was that was plenty. They used very nice ingredients, as well. The marshmallows that were inside were dense and didn't melt as quickly as store-bought marshmallows, were not as chalky, and were overall more pleasing. After having the chocolates I bought at the neighborhood shop, I headed down to the Veruca Chocolates storefront in Lincoln Park to buy try a broader range. They have some really fantastic house-made chocolates, as well as caramels and some seasonal goodies. They have a Chicago series of chocolates that are really good (the ones I've had, anyway; I don't like beer so the Goos-Island-inspired one isn't something that will be on my test-taste list). Their sea salt caramels are so good. That's my favorite item from here. I got several chocolate treats, and ended up buying some drinking chocolate to send to friends and family for the holidays as well. Veruca Chocolates has really nice, high quality products and I can't wait until they are able to reinstate classes (and I'm comfortable attending in-person events), because it would be really fun to learn how to work with chocolate and establish some level of expertise in that area! Great local chocolate boutique! Even my friend who is not a fan of chocolate felt this is one of the best chocolate he's tasted. Their 2-piece chocolates favor is a great office gift and was a huge hit with everyone. One of my colleagues said her daughter loved the fact that a slip of paper with all the ingredients was included so you can determine any allergic sources. I placed a large order and they were able to fulfill the order over the weekend. I made the mistake of walking into the shop rather than having them bring out the bags to the car. These chocolates were beautiful. They have a nice, thin shell, very smooth and great flavors. I tried a few of the 'best' chocolate places in Chicago, and this one has the best chocolates. They lose a star for having mediocre service, and for me not being able to build my own box on their website. I got their turtles, a set of s'mores and a mixed box. Things change! - now on Halsted at Evergreen (formerly on western at Fullerton) - still a cute shop but not as cozy - spooky skulls this year ain't spicy :-( - they offer coffee, cold brew and kombucha on tap - what?! No champagne. I could go for a nice stout. No stout. Thankfully, they still offer samples! Today - milk chocolate covered potato chips (ok, salty) and a rich yummy dark chocolate hazelnut coffee bonbon. Bonbon likes! While this is not the best chocolate I've had in the Chicagoland area (Piron is king), it is by far the most unique and beautiful. Each piece that I selected had complex and interesting flavors, along with gorgeous designs, that I doubt I'd find anywhere else. The caramel used in the turtles was absolutely amazing! Cute, tiny little shop, but full of delights. The candies themselves prove that good things come in small packages. Both the turtles and the sea-salt caramels are outstanding; the latter are quite handsome, too. Be aware that the caramels are mostly caramel with just a thin chocolate coating. This is not a complaint, just fair warning to anyone who expects the ratio to be closer to 50/50. Although I feel that giving candy for Valentine's Day is beyond cliche, in this particular case the choice was full of synergy. For example, my wife is a big fan of the Veruca Salt character. We try their Mango and Passion Fruit, Pistachio and Rum, Brown Butter, Caramelized White Chocolate and Bourbon, Peanut and Sea Salt, Hazelnut and Coffee, Arise Caramel, Sea Salt Caramel, Smores Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Ginger Bread and Seasonal Bark Milk Chocolate Rose Peats Cocoa Ribs. All of it has a different kind of savoring flavor. It's all so yummy. It's mouthwatering and delicious. We only ordered a box of Seasonal Bark Milk Chocolate Rose Peats Cocoa Ribs, Smores Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter GingerBread, Caramelized White Chocolate and Bourbon, Sea salt Caramel and Arise Caramel. It's been about a month since my daughter and I came here. We loved the chocolates. I wish that the chocolates in the case could be bought individually online because there are some that we loved that we wish we had often. We wish we would have thought to try the ice cream sandwiches. This place was really neat. We watch their Facebook page to see the awesome chocolates that they come up with. They have me wishing I was a chocolatier instead of a nurse. We live 6 hours away and I wish they had this quality of chocolate where I live. Last Sunday I had the pleasure of visiting the newly established Veruca Chocolates at the corner of Fullerton and Western for a little Valetine's Day Open House. The owner, Heather Johnston, was on hand to show us her array of handmade turtles, sea salt caramels, and dark chocolate gelt (for grownups!). If I had to choose my favorite, it would definitely be the turtles. Heather explained how she loves to bring a lot of flavor to the traditional turtle so she leaves the caramel on the heat right to the peak of flavor and roasts the nuts until they're just about to burn. You can taste the care that she puts into these yummy treats. The sea salt caramels are awesomely rich (is there any better flavor combo than caramel and chocolate?) The packaging that Heather has carefully chosen is artwork in itself, perfect for when you want to give your Valentine (or yourself, in my case) that extra special touch. The sexy bold pink and black combination make these chocolates so exciting to open. Plus the turtles are brushed with an iridescent rainbow of color and the sea salt caramels have a pouty pair of lips to remind you of what Valentine's Day is all about. The storefront also shares a kitchen with Dough Dough Bird baking company, from which I bought a couple of bags of gingerbread heart cookies, and Defloured, a gluten free bakery whose cheeky name I absolutely love. read more

I haven't had chocolates delicious enough to prompt a yelp review. I tried these chocolates while staying at a boutique hotel as a snack offering in our room. To my pleasant surprise, the "It's All That" bar had me swooning. It contained the perfect amount of milk chocolate, pretzel, toffee, peanut, and sea salt. Gratuitously overpriced, Veruca's are unmistakably 'luxury' food products. Unfortunately they're no better than the gourmet-styled chocolates (which may or may not also feature neon colors and glitter as Veruca does) that you might pick up in line at Starbucks. Customer service varies wildly. There's one woman I've encountered in the daytime who's just a total joy and knows her stuff. There's an English man I've been unfortunate to come across in the later day who was neither kind nor helpful, and seemed entirely unwilling to make suggestions/help me put together a gift. Which, frankly, if I'm your sole customer and about to drop $40+ here on maybe six pieces of candy...well, I don't know. Coffee is excellent, though also expensive -- it comes from Metric -- and there's a nice little seating area that might be pleasant if it weren't for the spare and sterile office surrounds. TL;DR: I would never make a point of visiting this shop. There are too many consistent, reliable, more reasonable alternatives nearby and elsewhere. read more

I initially heard about this on a late night talk show (Windy City Live) which came on after Nightline. I'm always in the lookout for neat little Chicago businesses that do s good job of representing the city that I can use as gift ideas for friends, family members or clients out of town. They make unique handmade specialty chocolates, and who doesn't love chocolate? The first time I thought to use them was for Mother's Day to send to my in-laws down in Florida. I was recovering from ankle surgery so couldn't get out to shop so I tried to order online. I chose two nice boxes and went to checkout and the shipping was more than twice the price of the chocolate because of the "season". Shipping chocolate to Florida can be difficult because if the heat. So I didn't follow through with it and opted for something else. Then I chose to use them for Fathers Day. I physically went to the store and bought a box of truffles and the Chicago collection (smart little box of novel chocolates with Chicago landmarks stenciled on them). We took them up to Wisconsin with us and presented them at brunch. They went over remarkably well and I think that both boxes were empty by the time we left. They weren't cheap but they were comparable to other handmade specialty chocolates if their quality. Not a lot of choices but a fair number of options, enough for a gift. Easy to get to location, street parking, easy in and out. Samples on the counter, I'm counting calories so I just said No. So since I haven't personally tried them I can't give a first hand opinion (hence the 4 star rating rather than 5) but given how fussy the recipients usually are and that the chocolates went over so well, I would not be remiss in saying they must be very good indeed. We were just walking by and saw a chocolate sign so had to stop by, and while inside the lady who was at the front took the time and attention to answer questions. She further explained what the chocolates had in them. She also said that all have dark chocolate so that is a plus plus. Amazing chocolates! I visited a pop-up location of theirs awhile ago. Outstanding quality, ingredients, and packaging/design.

I ordered these for my girlfriend a few weeks ago after finding them on many top 10 chocolatiers lists in Chicago. I was so happy with my order and with how easy Veruca made it for me to send love to my girlfriend. First, the customer service was phenomenal. They often got back to me within 1-2 days of an email. I even had a special request. I didn't want my girlfriend to be waiting around for the delivery, and they sent me the UPS tracking number. Every exchange I had with them was prompt and extremely helpful. I am so happy with their customer service. Second, I've been getting non-stop texts from my girlfriend telling me about how amazing the chocolates were. She ate them and shared them with her friends, and all of her friends also said that they were to die for (pun intended because I sent her spicy chocolate caramel skulls ahhaha). Third, I love that Veruca is so passionate about chocolates. You can see it on their social media pages, and you can definitely see it in their work. The taste. The packaging. The customer service. I attended a chocolate making class here in December and had a great time! I'm skeptical about many food-making classes as usually I don't feel they are worth the money, but the price of the class was equivalent to the price of all of the chocolates we made if we were to have purchased them - plus we got to wrap them in cute little packages to use as gifts. Christmas shopping - done! The instructors were engaging and patient and the time flew by. We also got to sample a full cup of the delicious hot chocolate - it was better than Mindy's or Katherine Anne's in my opinion. Classes would also be great options for kids. The bonbons are delicious and beautiful and each one tastes unique. I will definitely be coming back here to purchase chocolates as gifts in the future. read more

I'm a chocolate snob, and I don't grade on a curve. As far as I'm concerned, Fannie May should have stuck to mortgages. Some of the products from Vosges Haut-Chocolat are lovely, but too many of them taste gimmicky and feature flavors that don't marry well together. I don't enjoy the products from Katherine Anne Confections at all - they taste overwhelmingly sweet to me, almost cloyingly so. And the celebrated Kohler Chocolates were, for me, almost inedible. In contrast, the chocolates from Veruca are pretty much perfect. They have spoiled me for every other chocolate line out there. They are unbelievably delicious and exquisitely made, they look beautiful, and pure craftsmanship is evident in every bite. My ultimate dream is to have a pajama party in the Veruca shop on Western, except that I'd be the only person at the party. Seriously - chocolate doesn't get better than this. The chocolates are simply exceptional. I tried the following at the last visit to their Western Ave store: 1. Chocolate Skulls 2. Pumpkin Turtles 3. Peanut Butter/Dark chocolate something or other 4. saffron something tasty; and 5. something painted yellow on top that was dark and had salt maybe in it??? the Skulls are spicy and DELICIOUS and look really creepy/freaky. An excellent Halloween treat for adventurous chocoholics like me. The peanut butter creation I had was amazing and is my consistent favorite there - I've purchased quite a few. Love seeing the chocolates actually being made in front of you as well. They have some space age "Futura" chocolate making machine that looks like it is conducting the Lord's Work. Man if I could get one of those for home... The really nice owner lady pushes her avant garde Turtles on everyone, because they are in fact delicious - but i'm not a Turtle guy, so don't be afraid to try new things there, you will be rewarded. I adore local artisans especially those who deal in chocolate and sweets. I'm so lucky to live close to a couple of chocolatiers. I learned of Veruca chocolates for the first time thanks to my daycare owner. I'm a mom who loves to gift my kiddo's teachers. Well, I love to give gifts period, so teachers are no exception. However, I think our daycare owner might be an even better gifter than me. For our holiday gift from them, she gave us a box of Veruca chocolates. Though I had tons of chocolates around the holiday time, my special box of Veruca chocolates stuck out as my favorite. The mixed box of truffles is fantastic with flavors of saffron, sea salt, cinnamon, and others. I can't wait to receive and gift these chocolates to friends and family. The place is neat find, a chocolatier between art supplier & rock pub, a hidden gem of Logan Square specialty businesses, its clean & lustrous interior is all white with stainless steel equipment, like walking into a lab from the 2005 Wonka Factory.
