The Country Fried Steak was the most comforting and delicious I have ever had. With a Cinnamon Roll to go, a perfect meal!!!

If your going here for steak you may want to choose a different place. I had the 8 ounce rib eye which was so thin I wondered if it was an appetizer. Not real flavorful either. I tried my wife's prime rib , it was meh and a little tough. The salad was really good as were the green beans. I might go try a burger or something , but to spend $25 on what was really not a good deal you would be better off putting up with the noise of Texas Roadhouse or Still Whiskey. read more

Vern's is one of my top 3 places to get breakfast or a burger. It has that great small-town diner vibe, the staff is friendly, and the food is tasty. I stick to more classic meals though; I got a chicken sandwich once and it made me wish I'd just got a burger. The cinnamon rolls really are delicious and the coffee bottomless. read more

We've frequented Vern's for years and are so disappointed that the new management is choosing to cut corners. Their fruit used to be fresh and delicious, now they're buying the cheap stuff and soaking it in sugar water. Eggs are over cooked and the feel is changing. read more

Vern's has always been a family tradition to stop at on our way up the Poudre River. It never disappoints. Their Cinnamon Rolls are to die for. My family usually gets about six and by the time we get up to where we are going we have at least eaten two. The caramel and pecan rolls are good as well. I can't wait for my next visit to Vern's. read more

I wrote a scathing review right after the remodel. I am not sure if they were getting their feet back on the ground or what. I have been eating here for years and was disappointed in the first couple of meals. Yes, I said I would never go back. Well, never is a strong statement. We went back and tried Vern's a couple more times. Although I was not a fan of the remodel, it has grown on me. The food is why I went back and will continue to eat here. The service is just icing on the cake. We have had a few dinners. The Fish and Chips have been great. I had the 16oz Prime Rib dinner a couple weeks ago and it was cooked to perfection, the vegetables were in season and fresh, the dinner roll was home made and wonderful. We had breakfast there today. My wife had the breakfast burrito and I had the Country Fried Steak, both were really good. This is just plain good cooking, simple yet quality food with staff that takes great pride in making everybody feel like a guest. read more

We just snuck in 15 minutes before closing and they were nice about letting us dine. We knew just what we wanted, two bacon cheeseburgers, one with fries and the other with onion rings. They got our order right out to us. We've been to Vern's many times but these burgers were the best burgers we've have had in a very long time! They were perfection, the burger and bacon were perfectly cooked, the bun, pickles, lettuce and tomato were just right and the mayo tied the flavors together! Wow! Good stuff! The fries and onion rings are made in house, the tea is fresh brewed and delicious, I got a cup to take home. The staff was super nice so we left a good tip, you know how it is when someone walks in right before closing! They were great, but we won't do it again. You want the best breakfast in the area? This, as far as I've experienced in three years living in Fort Collins, is the example to which all other breakfast places around get compared. Delicious, busy, with a pleasant view of the nearby foothills, Vern's is excellent. Johnson's Corner may be famous for its cinnamon rolls, but once you have one here, you'll never even consider JC again. At least, I haven't. If you're ever in Laporte one morning, I can't recommend this place enough. read more

Had dinner here Friday 6/3/16 on the outside patio. The craziest thing I saw was the waitress ID a woman that could have been my grandma. Ordered their burrito and it was by far one of the best I have ever had in my life I think. Huge and lots of green chile around it. My party really liked their food and service we received. Overall awesome experience here on this night for us. Looked like they had raised prices slightly since we last dined here with the new menu's they had. read more

Vern's! I've been wanting to visit to try their cinnamon rolls and I finally got a chance to eat at Vern's the other week for lunch. Interesting décor with the taxidermy specimens, but it gives the place some character. My girlfriends and I each ordered our own cinnamon roll (we knew that we would end up with leftovers), and I also ordered the cheeseburger omelet (open faced omelet, hamburger patty, bacon, and a slice of cheese on top). The cinnamon roll was sooo good, I think I might have liked it better than Silver Grill's. Giant roll with icing and a little bit of butter on top for a sweet and slightly salty taste. Unfortunately, I wasn't a big fan of the omelet, it was just kind of meh (probably only 2.5-3 stars). The hamburger patty wasn't anything very special, and I feel like the cheese was a Kraft cheese slice. So, while service was great and I'm a fan of and will return for the cinnamon roll (4 stars for cinnamon roll!), I'm not so sure about the rest of the food; I think I'd need to go back to find something else to try. read more

My family and I have been going here for years. Really pleasant atmosphere but at times can be a little crowded. Their breakfast menu is great but their lunch menu is just OK not a whole lot of flavor. Of course the cinnamon rolls are amazing and huge. Not only does Vern's serve up great blue plate specials but this weekend their Chef Gene went the extra mile! After stuffing myself w a chicken fried chicken dinner I went out to the parking lot And discovered a flat tire on my car. I went back in to get the number for AAA when Gene offered to help. Their store also carried the stuff you inject into tires for a temporary fix, got his own compressor and filled my tire. It was huge! We had just finished a 12 mile hike and were pretty beat. We got home safe. But let me say it again - I love their food! Prime rib on weekends is the best. Breakfast, lunch or dinner. We've had them all. It's also my go to place for friends and family from out of town. After a day on the reservoir it's where we head. Great food, excellent service, easy parking and a spectacular view! read more

First off I have to say that until tonight I loved this place. The food has always been great and we have had a decent experience with service.... Tonight was a different story. Our server was great, their were 5 of us, and while that isn't a lot, the restaurant was fairly busy over all and I still felt like we were well looked after. Let me just put in that I have worked in food service.I understand that sometimes it's frustrating, but my biggest pet peeve is undeserved rudeness. After our meal, while standing at the counter to pay we watched a young lady struggle to enter all of our ticket correctly. This was not a big deal, I'm not sure if she was new or just having a rough go of it, but whatever. After the total came out it didn't match the math I had done at the table, so I very politely asked the other woman at the counter if she could check our tab. This woman proceeded to rip the receipt out of the register, hand it to me, and spew off totals for me to follow along with. After this extremely offensive display was complete, I let her know that it did look correct and said thank you. I tried to had her back the receipt to which she sarcastically asked if I would like to keep it. As far as I'm concerned there is no excuse to EVER. Treat a customer like this. It was absolutely ridiculous and I left feeling offended and agree that we had just spent $60 for dinner only to have a checker treat us like we were stupid. I had just told several people that this was the place to go for great food in a relaxed environment. I now regret sending anyone here. read more

I've been here plenty of times and with Vern's you never know what you are going to get. Both service and food can be great or horrible. Lately they seem to be suffering from their own success. In the weekends it can get pretty crowded and that is when the service gets really bad. Just know that going in and bring plenty of patients and you should be fine. read more

On Saturday June 18th we journeyed up to Verns to have a Chicken Fried Steak as an early Father's Day treat. Last time we were up (a couple of years ago) we had a wonderful CFS dinner. The Chicken Fried Steak was thick, moist and flavorful. It had a great flour crust and was done on a flattop as all good CFSs should be. The hash browns that accompanied the CFS were a delight. But that was a couple of years ago. Verns still advertise having the best CFS in Larimer County. Their ads have shown a luscious steak like I last had there. Don't believe them. The steaks that we received were hard, thin, tough and dry. The breading was some gritty material (corn meal?). The breading/crust was thick and uneven. It appeared like the CFS had been deep fried-- and then fried way too long. This was the first time in memory that we left reminants of a CFS on the plate. Parts of my Chicken Fried Steak were burnt to a black color and were not edible. They may have been house done but they were horrible. I've had better, and better prepared, commercial premade CFS patties. Since Vern's features a bakery, we thought we would try the, again, housemade Blueberry Pie as a desert. Neither my wife nor I were able to frind any sign of a blueberry in the filling. It was a homogenized blue custard-like filling that we guessed was the product of a food processor. Another real disappointment. To cap it off, service was bad. We happened to get a waitress who admitted that she was new. We waited about 15 minutes to place our order and she appeared to be surprised (and not pleasantly surprised) that she had customers. We placed our order. She knew nothing about how things were done. She had no interest in learning. Asking for hash browns instead of baked or mashed was a non-starter. Even getting house made fries instead of baked or mashed potatoes was a major debate. We placed our orders and waited 20 minutes. Our salads arrived via a second waitress. We had not even started our salads when the first waitress showed up with our dinners. We refused them and suggested she bring out fresh dinners after we ate our salads. When we finished our salads she brought out the two Chicken Fried Steak dinners we ordered. It was abvious that they had held the original dinners under a none-too-good heat lamp. The meat and potatoes were cold and the gravy was barely warm. It is interesting to be served cold, burnt food. We had not even completed our first bite of dinner when the waitress returned asking about the food and bringing us our bill. When we mentioned our issues she did not seem to care. We mentioned the bad food and poor service to both another waitress and the cashiers. They were going to "pass it along" to management. Fort Collins and the surrounding area have many good restaurants. We can't say that Verns is one of them. Perhaps they can do well being the only restaurant in the Laporte area. We won't be making a trip back to their cafe. read more

Verns is an experience. It's redneck for sure... But the food is real home cookin', the prices are right, and it's fun to mingle with the locals. I really like verns- because besides enjoying good food, you can pretend like you're in the movie "deliverance" here. read more

My family and I had a few hours to kill before our white water rafting trip. The views of the Colorado Rocky Mountains and Poudre River were breathtaking and everyone was excited to start our adrenalin-filled adventure. Although we already ate breakfast that morning, it had been a couple of hours and our stomach's now rumbled. Besides, we needed as much energy as we could get for what we were in store for. Unfortunately, there didn't appear to be any restaurants around due to the secluded location of our launch site. To our luck one of the river guides arrived early at the site and recommended a nearby breakfast spot in La Porte called Vern's Place. He raved about their giant cinnamon rolls. Excited by this prospect, we piled in the car and ventured on to Vern's Place. Since we were in the middle of the mountains, I expected a tiny mom and pop diner, not a lodge restaurant with liquor store, souvenir shop, and gas station attached. But the old western style wood interior was quite inviting, as were the numerous taxidermied animals and pioneer items on the walls, which made you feel like you're visiting a rustic hunting lodge. The smell was intoxicating--rich maple syrup, homemade buttermilk pancakes, grilled hash browns. I knew restaurants like this well--the greasy spoon type. In my experience we were in for either the best or the worst breakfast of our lives, and since this was the only opportunity for food for a long time, I hoped it would be the former. We settled in a large comfortable booth in the back, marveling at the taxidermied deer, buffalo, and bear heads, while listening to faint bluegrass music. The waitresses were friendly and personable. Patrons wore cowboy hats, cozy jeans, and flannel. Locals sipped their coffee in thick mugs, talking about the daily news with distinct accents, and families dined on humongous portions of biscuits and gravy. At the time, I had lived in Colorado for two years and traveled quite extensively throughout it, but this moment was the first time I truly felt as if I had stepped back into the wild west. While everyone ordered full breakfasts of pancakes and eggs, I had my heart set on only the giant cinnamon roll. Our waitress informed me that they were indeed very large, to which I replied, "Great." She shot me a questionable look as if to say, "there's no way you can finish it on your own," but took my order anyway. Yes, I know I'm a little thing, but I have a big appetite, especially when it comes to sweets. I knew I wouldn't have a problem polishing off my plate. A few minutes later the cinnamon roll arrived. It was giant and fresh from the oven, so fresh that it was a bit doughy--my favorite. It took up the entire plate forming a beautiful concentric cinnamon swirl drizzled with icing and a dollop of butter on top. Yum! It was so pretty looking I almost didn't want to eat it. When everyone's eyes lit up at the table, I knew I would be having to fend off fork invasions. Luckily, everyone ordered their own rolls right then and there so I could enjoy my giant cinnamon roll in peace. I was taken by surprise by how wonderful the cinnamon roll tasted--like something your grandmother would make you from scratch. It was light and fluffy and fully loaded with the perfect amount of cinnamon to sugar ratio, not too much frosting, and a little bit of whipped butter for extra creamy sweetness. I ate the entire thing with a smile on my face. I was certainly glad that I didn't order a full breakfast, as the cinnamon roll was enough to keep me full for hours. I even took pride when the waitress cleared away my empty plate. Everyone raved about their breakfasts, and when we finished, we headed over to the connected souvenir shop with satisfied grins. Vern's Place had everything you could imagine for sale--souvenir mugs, fishing equipment, knickknacks, snacks, jewelry, and more! There was so much to look at that it took much convincing to pry my mother and me from the shop. But since our rafting time was quickly approaching, we were forced to exit past the stuffed grizzly bear that had greeted us, chatting about what a great experience this was. Vern's Place proved to be a fun, laid-back experience, offering hardy breakfasts, and to die for cinnamon rolls. The atmosphere alone warranted a memorable adventure, and the cinnamon rolls definitely proved up to their hype. It's easy to see why this place is so popular amongst locals and people passing through. My only regret is that I didn't order more cinnamon rolls for the road. The entire experience was truly unforgettable. Vern's Place is definitely an honorable mention worth visiting. My Recommendation: Giant Cinnamon Roll (with coffee). read more

Having grown up in Laporte you would think I would automatically be a fan of Vern's. Not so much. The service is very unprofessional...from the wait staff to the gal at the counter with the fancy glasses. I would almost go on to say they are rude at Vern's. This opinion is not based on one visit to the establishment....it's based off of many over the years visits. The only "good" part to the place is their cinnamon rolls. Verns is the most amazing place I have ever eaten breakfast!!! Everything is delicious and the service is so on point and the people are super friendly. The cinnamon rolls are seriously life changing and there is not a single item on the menu that would let you down no matter what your taste. I love bringing people here that haven't been before because then they are HOOKED! Also it's cool that it is more than just a restaurant and also located in a beautiful area that I hope never gets built up (knock on wood). We always used to go here for breakfast, The food is amazing I will give them that. However the service is so horrible!! We tried to go there Sunday and had a group of 7 people. We had waiting to be seated with hardly any acknowledgment, I asked if we were going to be helped because I saw an 8 top empty and plenty of other tables empty. We were asked to take our money elsewhere because I asked if we were going to get sat. Well because of that one bad attitude employee we will never spend another dime at that place, the other 5 people with us expressed the same. We will find a new place to enjoy our meals that welcomes our money. read more

I'm giving three stars because the food is still good. I'll go to Vern's for the bakery, but it will be a long time before we go there for a meal again. We aren't hard to please and I understand rushes, but the service today was very lackluster. Great view.....Stopped in for breakfast. Wait staff is great, really nice people in general. Unfortunately, going to a restaurant is about food and it's quality, I won't be eating here again. In short, my breakfast tasted like a salt lick. Even if it didn't, I wouldn't order it again. It wasn't very appetizing. Second time I got sick from the burrito. Took 20min for a cup of coffee. Place was a mess with dirty tables everywhere. Can't wait for new breakfast place on corner of overland.
