Excellent coffee, seriously good food, and the staff has been incredibly kind and welcoming each time. The atmosphere is one of the best parts -- cool historic building, relaxed vibe, and just a really comfortable place to spend time. It feels like the kind of spot you can use for anything: work meetings, hanging out with friends, or just enjoying a quiet morning by yourself. Definitely becoming one of my go-to places in Fort Collins.

The SO's mushroom quiche was custardy with a good amount of mushrooms. The walnut chocolate chip cookie was an excellent thick homemade type of cookie. The sourdough loaf was spot on. As an every day black coffee drinker, I have to say, they were having a really bad coffee day. After a few sips of my coffee, I went back to counter and put a bunch of half and half into my mug of coffee. The barista was looking at me with an expression that said, "You should have ordered an espresso drink". They are forgiven for one bad coffee day.

Tip Extortion Been…read moregoing there occasionally for 5 years. Service was hit and miss. Some staff friendly, some merely aloof, some seemingly hostile. Never could figure it out. Gave them the benefit of the doubt. I always support independent shops when possible. Friends don't let friends go to Starbucks... A few days ago it became clear. I ordered a bagel and requested it be toasted enough not to be raw inside. About half the time that's what I got. I paid and saw they wanted a tip upfront. I feel asking for a tip before earning it is unethical. So I selected no tip. I would gladly leave a dollar after. One of the staff, let's call him "Beta Boy", toasted my bagel and delivered it to me burnt. No overdone. Burnt. As in mostly black. I said it was burnt. He replied that I requested it "double toasted". I looked at him like he was speaking in Swahili. I explained that I merely wanted it toasted and not raw inside. He insisted that I ordered it that way. He did not take my order. I said she wrote it but I did not say it. He insisted that I, the customer, was somehow so stupid as to not know how to order a bagel. I said "would you eat this"? Amazingly, he said with a straight face "yes". I replied that he could eat it but I want what I ordered. At this point "Beta Boy" leaned over and told me I should be nice. Nice? Nice! I was flabbergasted. I was being scolded by kid a third my age. I was stunned. Was this a joke? Yes, but he was serious. It was an absolutely stunning display of passive-aggressive behavior. Delivered with a condescending smirk and self-righteousness. I replied that I am not nice and so what. He then insisted that I be nice. I said I am from the Midwest and we tend to be direct. It's not rude. It's the way we communicate. Honestly without hedging. This sailed right over his head unacknowledged, Then the truth. You didn't leave a tip he said. How did he know I didn't tip on the little checkout screen? I tried to explain my view on tipping that it needs to be earned. "Beta Boy" was adamant that they expect tips as they are not paid much and work "hard". I reiterated my view and called tipping up front unearned and possibly undeserved as like Socialism. "Beta Boy" did not like that and said that "people of my generation (Boomers are Bad!) don't get it." He further lectured me on how underpaid they were and that the "need" and thus "deserve" tips regardless of what service they offer. He then declared that a dollar tip was entirely insufficient. I replied that $1 on a $4 bagel was a 25% tip. He repeated that it was too little regardless. I said then how much is fair. He did not answer. My guess is that he knew as much about the mathematics of percentages as he knows about Swahili dialects. I offered that if they were to ask for tips after, the honorable way, they would earn more. People are motivated above all by fairness and would hedge on tips not knowing if they would be earned. "Beta Boy" gave me the obligatory hourly-wage employee response that "that's the way it is"... The self-declared creatives have the ingenuity of cows munching grass. Then a kid decided to be a hero and intervened saying "WE don't have a problem with the tipping". In a stunning display of sociotropic behavior, he elected himself to defend the shop and represent all other patrons. I ran out of patience and told him to STFU. At this point the heroine server, who decided I like burnt bagels, told me to leave. So I did leave. I regret every penny I spent there to support their shop. So now I know why even as I liked the layout of the place, and all their countless little books promoting a myriad of pretentious woke socialist utopia topics, I never felt comfortable there. The all-inclusive did not like me invading their "Safe Space". Instead of just telling me "hey, this is our space not yours Boomer Boy" they instead were a case study in passive aggressiveness. A coward's way to feel all smug and self-righteous. Since they present themselves as fans of "literature" here is a literary quote (Kurt Vonnegut Jr. in Slaughterhouse Five... said to the character Billy Pilgrim in a hospital upon his return from being a prisoner of war in Dresden, Germany... "I can carve a better man out of a banana" So I see that they have high ratings from their intended audience and I am a mere interloper. My little One star rating will not be noticed. By the way, I am from Michigan and the state animal is the Wolverine. It is ferocious and righteous. No other animal messes with it. Your business does not deserve the name. The space is large, relaxed, and perfect for settling in for an afternoon of tiles and socializing. They've got a happy hour with cocktails and afternoon bites, which is basically my love language. I went with an Old Fashioned and a warm, soft pretzel with honey butter... and both hit the spot. They also have a full bar plus coffee and tea, so there's something for everyone whether you're here for the drinks, a bite, or a little friendly Mahjong competition. A great local hangout with a welcoming vibe -- and definitely a place I'd happily return to the next time I'm in Fort Collins.

It was a Guatemala blend, and they rotate different types often. The coffee wasn't cheap ($3 for 12oz black coffee), but it was well worth it! They have an option for pour over coffees if that's your thing. They recently started serving breakfast burritos from Consuelos, and we both got one of those as well. They were served on a plate with silverware and a napkin. I watched the barista make drinks for some of the other customers and she made each one with great care. The barista who took my order seemed friendly, and they called my name loudly enough when my drink was ready that I could hear it from the next room. I had a piece of strawberry bread and an iced spiced chai, both really good! The strawberry bread had this fresh, rustic homemade taste to it that I loved, and it was a huge slice. The chai was appropriately strong - the spicy chai is made with soy milk, but the tea was rich enough that I didn't really pick up on the soy flavour. I could tell it was proper chai and not something made from a packaged concentrate. I wish I lived in Fort Collins so I could come here all the time!

As we were wandering northward someone started suggested G&B. My reaction was absolutely not, why don't we go to Persimmon instead? "Oh, I've heard good things - where is it?" There. "Where?" Right there. "I don't see it." That door directly across the street from us! Persimmon is quite inconspicuous from the street, but is one of Fort Collins' hidden in plain sight gems. That proved to be a good thing on a day where thousands of people pretty much had the same thought of needing something to warm up - while there were throngs at other places we passed by Persimmon was nearly empty. Our group of 6 easily found a comfy spot for our group. It turns out the we beat the lunch rush - it started to get quite busy once noon rolled around. After perusing the menu for warm drinks a few decided they were hungry so food was ordered as well. I had a matcha latte, unsweetened, and it was a perfect choice to warm up after being out in the wind and bluster that morning. They use a ceremonial grade matcha, which I found to be smooth and really not bitter. I also shared a pastrami sandwich with one of my friends - they were nice enough to bring out the sandwich halves on two plates. While not a New York deli kind of sandwich, it was good - quality ingredients on focaccia. They source their pastrami from a specialty butcher in Denver, though I've forgotten their name. Sandwiches are served with kettle chips that are light, crispy, and not too oily. In a previous visit I had their tuna sandwich and sampled some appetizers. The tuna sandwich was among the best I have ever had - I can't really put my finger on why but I do remember that my first bite wowed me. I didn't see the meze sampler on the menu this time, but as I recall the beet hummus was a standout. I don't lunch out in Old Town very often, but Persimmon is always such a pleasure. I need to make a point of coming more often.
