This was plenty of food for 2 hungry adults. The guacamole here is made to order and is a large portion of guacamole (2 avocados). A mortar and pestle wasn't used and a spoon was used instead to mash the avocado. This led to some inconsistencies in the texture. However, the guacamole was very good and I appreciated the addition of bacon as it added some smokiness and pork flavor. The beef arepa was ok and was not exactly what I would expected. The arepa was fried and the beef was shredded with iceberg lettuce. Still tasted pretty good but wouldn't order again. The beef antichuco was really good. I'm a sucker for chimichurri and it paired nicely with the steak skewers. The potatoes accompanying the dish were crispy and delicious. The best dish was the Bandeja Paisa- Pork Belly Rice. The Columbian dish and includes a plantains, pork belly, refried beans, sunny-side egg and rice. This is total comfort food and is packed with flavors the hits all the notes on your palette: fat, salt, acidity, and sweetness. I would definitely order this again.

It opened up in what use to be the BBQ pork restaurant, which irked me as I love BBQ pork. However, Mayta is actually a very welcome replacement. Let's start at the top; the first thing you will want to do is get a round os Pisco Sours in. They have a great variety of flavours and mixes of this traditional alcoholic beverage, and they make them well. Just the right amount of sour, just the right amount of kick. Forget the wine and beer, just stick to these bad boys all night. Now, the food. If you are not familiar with Peruvian food, Google it. However, my recommendations are as follows... Start with the cerviches, this is essentially Peruvian sushi, with big chunks of raw salmon, tuna and/or mackerel, steeped in lime and indigenous spices. These are great for sharing, so get the "platter" and sample all of them. I always follow this with the suckling pork "stew", sooooo good! The restaurant is large and spacious, so you don't feel to hemmed in, but the decor and ambience make for a nice intimate setting. The staff are great, super friendly and really efficient. The manager is particularly nice, and always greets with a smile and few pleasantries. Book if you are coming at the weekend or on Super Monday, as it can get busy. During mid week, it is often completely dead, so you will have more luck with a walk-in then.

I only discovered Mayta this year but I'm already a fan. For those wanting to visit Mayta this July, heads up; Peru's National Day is on the 28th. Mayta's interior has a very homey feel; wooden furnishings with intricate designs and dark wood maroon tables and chairs while the house music pumps out funky Latin American jams. One thing I noticed off the bat is the dedicated ceviche station, for those who can't get enough of it. Piscos (pomade brandy) are also a big hit here and undoubtedly serves an extensive menu of pisco. The a la carte menu is divided into Peruvian tapas, skewers, ceviche, wok and salads, specials and desserts. Because ceviche is a specialty here, we decided to order the clasico, made with sea bass and marinated in leche de tigre (which translates to tiger's milk - didn't need a dictionary for that one). It tasted sweet and salty at the same time - a fantastic combination. For the tapas, we chose the pan con chicharron which tasted like a steamed pandesal but with crunchy pork belly and a spicy and garlicky aoili sauce. I'm not saying it wasn't good but it didn't taste that great either. Dessert fared better due to the suspiro de limena, a sumptuous offering of dulce de leche at the bottom, a creamy meringue with port wine at the top, and the surprisingly good taste of olive oil ice cream. Some of the staff were Latin American, which was a pleasant surprise, and I could bust out the little Spanish I knew. They were truly friendly and obviously knowledgeable about the different dishes. I liked the mix of textures, from the crunchy flakiness of the nuts and coconut, to the density of the cake and cream cheese glaze which is so hard to come by in this city. The baked cookie dough is a dish that is often done well in Hong Kong and this was no exception. The outer layer was crunchy, while the inner laver was soft and gooey. The shakes were also nice and mild, not overly sweet as is the fashion back in the states, and that's a welcome transgression to the norm. The Diabla 2.0 with vodka, raspberry, tamarind and habanero failed on the taste as well as the liquor content. It might as well have been a bland mocktail.  We got the Mexican street-style corn and nachos to share. The corn was good - your usual Mexican corn on the cob with anejo butter, spiced mayo and parmesan.  The nachos were corn chips topped with vegetarian chili con carne (the carrots caught my attention) and the usual fixings of guac, sour cream, cheese, onions and cilantro. The place has plenty of seating on the inside and quite a section for outdoor action. Folks can smoke and drink as they please outside with no problems. On the inside they have TVs galore, usually broadcasting Mexican soccer / futbol games. The staff is not pretentious and they have provided good service each time I'm here. Don't be nervous about trying to say the words on the menu, chances are the nearly app Nepalese staff might have trouble saying it too. Let's one thing straight: the "Mexican" food here is close to an abomination. Anyone coming here to get their fix of sopa tortilla or the next great mole poblano will be sorry they did. The bar is stacked with versions of bar friendly Mex, which includes nachos, quesadillas, and tacos. Most of the aforementioned is incredibly mediocre, but being that HK is not blessed with quality Mexican fare, the food at Tequila Jack's is hardly a surprise. Do however, indulge on their themed nights. On Saturday nights for example, is steak night for $108 each. It is a 10oz steak with some fixins like fries, veggies, and corn on the cob. I'm usually not terribly crazy about cheap steak but theirs is a slight exception. My steak has been cooked perfectly each time and the marbling / fat actually melts in your mouth. I have been here since the prices were $90 and the steak has been one of the only highlights food wise. On the drink front, they have a legit array of Mexican beers along with a stellar selection of tequila. It's probably the most abundant collection of tequila I've seen in the hood. The prices per shot aren't cheap ($140?) but if money doesn't matter as much the drunks are in their own league at TJ's. Lastly, if you're sitting outside at night: Watch out for our furry friends running around. They have caused quite a stir in the past. And *do not* feed them.
