Let me get the negatives out of the way first. I was disappointed in the burrito. It was bland, beans were hard and undercooked (why were both refried beans and black beans in my burrito in the first place?), and many of the ingredients that should normally be standard inside the burrito were of extra cost as a side item (really, salsa is extra for a burrito?). That said - everything else was amazing! The high notes: The grilled corn on the cob! OMG Fantastic! The tacos were delicious. We ordered the 5-set, and picked one of each - pork, beef, chicken, shrimp, and fish. I can definitely say you can do without the seafood varieties, they were overcooked but edible since the flavors were incredible. Pork shined the brightest. I will say their soft taco shells (a true Mexican no-no) were likely not made in-house, they were a bit more chewy than one would hope... but it's easily forgivable. On the other hand, the free chips and salsa that started the meal were likely in-house made, and delicious top-to-bottom. I especially liked how fresh their salsa tasted. The margaritas were also sweet and tasty. I think I preferred the traditional lime over the guava, mango and wild fruit options. All could have used a bit more tequila (or maybe I'm just a lush), but then again it was happy hour so I can't complain. The best item on their menu might be... drumroll please... their nachos‽ Yes, the most non-Mexican item was also their most spectacular. How the heck did they manage to get a little of every topping onto every chip? That feat of perfection is a rarity in the USA, and it actually makes a big difference. Now keep in mind, nachos are a staple on every bar/pub menu across America, so one would more likely call it Tex-Mex than Mexican. But who cares, it was freakin' delicious at Caliente!!! The Nachos were definitely the highlight (I know, not the most authentic Mexican dish). But they really pay attention to the detail with the massive mound of nachos: every single chip was at least partially covered in melted cheese and had easy access to the other toppings. This means the cheese and toppings were not just sprinkled on top, but added layer by layer. I'm not sure if I found even a couple of naked chips. Not often over in this area, but will make it a point to visit for that next craving for Mexican food.

Tucked in an alley in Lan Kwai Fung or LKF, it's open for dinners through later in the nights. Loud music, colourful yet rustic decor.  I was disappointed with my drinks that were very watered down. I don't know what's with these places charging generously for measly spiked drinks.   I'd gotten the Carlito's Mezcal which had passionfruit, lime and smoked grapefruit. I did enjoy that smokiness. The Diabla 2.0 with vodka, raspberry, tamarind and habanero failed on the taste as well as the liquor content. It might as well have been a bland mocktail.  We got the Mexican street-style corn and nachos to share. The corn was good - your usual Mexican corn on the cob with anejo butter, spiced mayo and parmesan.  The nachos were corn chips topped with vegetarian chili con carne (the carrots caught my attention) and the usual fixings of guac, sour cream, cheese, onions and cilantro. While they were good, I'm not sure if that HKD 165 price tag was justified. It could've done with more toppings and bigger portion size? I don't know.  I'm still to come to terms with the HK prices. Come here for the drinks or for their attempt at Latin / Mexican bar food and bring some good company to boot. This is one of those places where a good time depends on who's drinking and who's not. The place has plenty of seating on the inside and quite a section for outdoor action. Folks can smoke and drink as they please outside with no problems. On the inside they have TVs galore, usually broadcasting Mexican soccer / futbol games. The staff is not pretentious and they have provided good service each time I'm here. Don't be nervous about trying to say the words on the menu, chances are the nearly app Nepalese staff might have trouble saying it too. Let's one thing straight: the "Mexican" food here is close to an abomination. Anyone coming here to get their fix of sopa tortilla or the next great mole poblano will be sorry they did. The bar is stacked with versions of bar friendly Mex, which includes nachos, quesadillas, and tacos. Most of the aforementioned is incredibly mediocre, but being that HK is not blessed with quality Mexican fare, the food at Tequila Jack's is hardly a surprise. Do however, indulge on their themed nights. On Saturday nights for example, is steak night for $108 each. It is a 10oz steak with some fixins like fries, veggies, and corn on the cob. I'm usually not terribly crazy about cheap steak but theirs is a slight exception. My steak has been cooked perfectly each time and the marbling / fat actually melts in your mouth. I have been here since the prices were $90 and the steak has been one of the only highlights food wise. On the drink front, they have a legit array of Mexican beers along with a stellar selection of tequila. It's probably the most abundant collection of tequila I've seen in the hood. The prices per shot aren't cheap ($140?) but if money doesn't matter as much the drunks are in their own league at TJ's. Lastly, if you're sitting outside at night: Watch out for our furry friends running around. They have caused quite a stir in the past. And *do not* feed them.

Despite it's wannabe Mexican flair, Agave is more of a place to knock back a few margaritas and tequila shots than it is a place for chocolate-y mole and handmade tortillas. The food doesn't win here, but it is one of the only places in Hong Kong that showcases excellent Spanish live music. For anyone who has been to their sister location in Central (https://www.yelp.com/biz/agave-tequila-y-comida-%E9%A6%99%E6%B8%AF-2), the Wanchai Agave feels remarkably different. Seedier than its LKF location, it is perched above ground with an open patio to people watch while sipping a drink. When it comes to the food, my inner Mexican self is not terribly impressed with the greasy execution and inflated pricetag. Much of the food is either over salted or over cheesed. The menu is comprised of mainly quesadillas, nachos, ensaladas, enchiladas, antojito appetizers, burritos, tacos and fajitas. There are also some classic items like cochinita pibil ($158HKD), chilaquiles de res ($118HKD). And there's even a few options for molcajetes (think Mexican bibimbap wtih stone bowls), which range from $150-220HKD. My sad enchiladas rojas ($164HKD) was drowned in sauce and caked in ranchero cheese. There wasn't much meat inside the tortillas, and even the accompanying rice and beans were skimpy portion wise. Even the tacos ($138-168 for 4) were teeny tiny, but loaded with salsa and fixins. At about $4-5 USD each, I was more disappointed at how bland my pork and chicken tacos were. Even the ground chorizo quesadilla ($128) was a blanket of wet cheese and grease. The bar is prominent and loaded with various tequilas and mezcals. Shots anyone? (The answer is always "Si.") The selection is pretty impressive, with slightly more obscure brands like El Tesoro ($98HKD) and Correlejo ($98HKD). All shots range from $68-428HKD, which is no joke price wise. Drastically cheaper are their other spirits in the house, which get even cheaper during their happy hour. One of their major highlights is Chris Polanco, their main squeeze for the live music. The man knows how to work a crowd and sings a hell of a rendition of all sorts of Mexican songs. It's easy to sit at the bar, rock a drink of some kind and just let Chris do his thing on the guitar.

While it may not be the traditional flavors of Oaxaca or whatever, as a Tex-Mex place it cannot be beat! We've had other attempts at Mexican in China but they always lack the flavor and depth of the stuff back home. So when we came here we had limited expectations. Honestly, my quesadillas were amazing! The ground chorizo was my favorite because it was so damn tasty! The enchiladas were great and our friends really enjoyed their vegetarian fare. The quest fundidio was a favorite of all four of us. They have good margaritas and the decor takes you back home even if it's just for a couple hours. The service was good although my attempt at having two meats in my quesadilla was translated into two different ones. I can't complain because I was really hungry and they were both delicious. It is pricey since it's in HK and the area is populated by brothels. However, just take an Uber to and from and you will not be disappointed.

Asked for very spicy and medium spicy, and the very spice was sort of spicy while the medium wasn't spicy at all. Drinks are authentic mexican pops and they're super good! Guava is awesome! The layout is quite casual, with a mix of couples and families. The menu is quite extensive with fresh oysters from different countries. We sampled two different varieties from Ireland. There's also a tapas page offering things from garlic shrimps to iberico ham. We ordered the foie gras sandwiched between toasts. It was quite good if a little rich. One of our friends had a soup of the day which was butter squash. It came with a piece of tomato-rubbed toast, Spanish style. He liked it. We also ordered a Caesar salad for two which was large enough for the four of us to sample. A solid salad but lacked a bit of dressing. When we mentioned it to the waiter, he brought out more dressing on the side. For our mains, my GF and one of our friends ordered ordered the Iberico pork chops grilled and served with roasted potatoes and half a head of roasted garlic. The two chops were juicy and tender with a hint of sweetness from the balsamic glaze. The chops were part of the daily special which I also ordered off. I had a pasta with prawns and scallops. The pasta was tasty with three large prawns. My only quibble would be that I wish there were more scallops as I only got two. Our other friend ordered off the menu and had a seafood stew that featured clams, mussels, scallops, and half a lobster. It was huge. Now I know where my scallops went! Good Mexican food in Hong Kong is yet a hidden for me, in Hong Kong. And that one disinterested server didn't make it all the more experiential here. I got a lunch set that comes with rice + beans. I was making sure the enchiladas were vegetarian but that server wasn't sure and was so disappointed when I asked her to confirm with the kitchen if it was completely vegetarian - no animal stocks or fats or the likes. The faces these people make makes me wonder why do they take people facing roles? It was noon. I was the only guest in the restaurant that far. Was she tired, having a bad or sad day or just plain indifferent? After confirming with who looked like the supervising server that it would be vegetarian, and asking her to skip the cheese, I did order the enchilada lunch set. At least, she bothered to make eye contact, was a bit more interested. And much to my dismay, it came out looking as depressing as that server. My vegetarian enchiladas were stuffed with refried beans, and served with a side of refried beans and rice. There wasn't enough of the tomato salsa / sauce that is so typical of enchialadas that I've eaten so far. And you know those onions that are sitting there, cut for a while and how they smell - they put those inside in the enchiladas along with the refried beans. Wonder why they didn't think of adding some vegetables. Basic peppers and tomatoes. What about cilantro? The two salsas that were served with the meal were nice. Undersalted, but good. The chips were oil-drenched. Hello good Mexican food in Hong Kong, where are you? I think ordering a margarita there would've done me some good. When the cheese first served, it was melting, delight and perfect with minced meat. Still, it turnt cold and dry in a short time. Adding some heater should help this dish. Then we got their steak. They forgot the tortilla bread. We asked for medium and it just tastes so dry. The sauce and salsa is good. But sorry this dish does not match expectation. Finally the churros my all time favourite for dessert. The churros is fried well and cinnamon flavour is balanced. But the dip is not sticky nor sweet enough.
