I do that all the time!  Brickhouse restored some faith that Hong Kong has some decent Mexican food to offer. New York is my yardstick for comparison.  The place is quite lively, more to hangout with friends than family. Tucked in an alley in Lan Kwai Fung or LKF, it's open for dinners through later in the nights. Loud music, colourful yet rustic decor.  I was disappointed with my drinks that were very watered down. I don't know what's with these places charging generously for measly spiked drinks.   I'd gotten the Carlito's Mezcal which had passionfruit, lime and smoked grapefruit. I did enjoy that smokiness. The Diabla 2.0 with vodka, raspberry, tamarind and habanero failed on the taste as well as the liquor content. It might as well have been a bland mocktail.  We got the Mexican street-style corn and nachos to share. The corn was good - your usual Mexican corn on the cob with anejo butter, spiced mayo and parmesan.  The nachos were corn chips topped with vegetarian chili con carne (the carrots caught my attention) and the usual fixings of guac, sour cream, cheese, onions and cilantro. While they were good, I'm not sure if that HKD 165 price tag was justified. It could've done with more toppings and bigger portion size? I don't know.  I'm still to come to terms with the HK prices. Come here for the drinks or for their attempt at Latin / Mexican bar food and bring some good company to boot. This is one of those places where a good time depends on who's drinking and who's not. The place has plenty of seating on the inside and quite a section for outdoor action. Folks can smoke and drink as they please outside with no problems. On the inside they have TVs galore, usually broadcasting Mexican soccer / futbol games. The staff is not pretentious and they have provided good service each time I'm here. Don't be nervous about trying to say the words on the menu, chances are the nearly app Nepalese staff might have trouble saying it too. Let's one thing straight: the "Mexican" food here is close to an abomination. Anyone coming here to get their fix of sopa tortilla or the next great mole poblano will be sorry they did. The bar is stacked with versions of bar friendly Mex, which includes nachos, quesadillas, and tacos. Most of the aforementioned is incredibly mediocre, but being that HK is not blessed with quality Mexican fare, the food at Tequila Jack's is hardly a surprise. Do however, indulge on their themed nights. On Saturday nights for example, is steak night for $108 each. It is a 10oz steak with some fixins like fries, veggies, and corn on the cob. I'm usually not terribly crazy about cheap steak but theirs is a slight exception. My steak has been cooked perfectly each time and the marbling / fat actually melts in your mouth. I have been here since the prices were $90 and the steak has been one of the only highlights food wise. On the drink front, they have a legit array of Mexican beers along with a stellar selection of tequila. It's probably the most abundant collection of tequila I've seen in the hood. The prices per shot aren't cheap ($140?) but if money doesn't matter as much the drunks are in their own league at TJ's. Lastly, if you're sitting outside at night: Watch out for our furry friends running around. They have caused quite a stir in the past. And *do not* feed them.

It seems however that you get what you pay for. The nachos were good- an excellent balance of jalapeños, salsa, cheese and chips, but the tacos were frankly a bit of a letdown. Aside from the fish tacos which were flaky, and delightfully seasoned, and the pastor, the other items weren't quite at a level I was hoping. The Trump (a rather unusual beef tongue taco with chicharon- a pork-rind like substance) honestly tasted rather odd, and the remaining options were overcooked or at the very least needed far more sauce. The churros were okay, though they were on the crunchy side, and I'd argue they would've tasted better if the melted chocolate was served hot or warm. The flan was lumpy and had more of a scrambled egg texture as though they made it with the egg whites. I normally don't pick on this, as I find it rather trivial, but I was shocked at the lapses in product knowledge, with staff not knowing basic information such as which tacos were spicy, or whether any of the tacos contained pork in them. Bonus points for friendliness though. For some random reason, they seemed to also be cranking up the music, which made it difficult to hold a conversation. As for how authentic the food is here, well, I can't pass judgement on that! The decor of the restaurant seems Mexican enough. The walls are bright yellow, reminding me of a hot Mexican desert sun. The menu is the same neon shade of yellow too. I found the Spanish music playing overhead really catchy - I found myself humming along to the music after a while, and I don't even speak Spanish and haven't heard these songs before! I've tried the quesadillas (yes, I can pronounce it correctly now!) the tacos and the flan here. The quesadillas are really good - I love how it tastes with guacamole and sour cream - but the portion was a little small. We ordered one to share among four of us and I felt like I could finish the whole thing myself! I liked the tacos - you can order either hard or soft shell, and I've tried both. I feel like the soft shell tastes too ordinary and that the hard shell one is more special, but it's a little messy to eat. For dessert, it was my friend's idea to order the flan. I was skeptical because I've heard that flan is very sweet, but I tried it when she ordered it and it really was way too sweet for my liking. Overall, given my limited familiarity with Mexican food, I think iCaramba is not bad, but the portions don't justify its prices. I'm still on the hunt for a reasonably priced Mexican restaurant in HK, and I'm not having any luck so far!

Whilst browsing that menu, I found myself yearning for the good / cheap Tex-Mex restaurants that are popular across the United States. It's the food that most American's think of when they think of Mexican (even though it's not even close to the real thing). At Mamacita's (TX), tacos come three to an order and are served with refried beans and rice and costs $9.99 USD (roughly 77 HKD) At Mamasita's (HK), a single beef cheek taco costs $68 HKD. It's piteously small and outrageously expensive for such a dear portion of food. But then again this is the restaurant that charges $78 for chips and salsa whereas most restaurants would provide this free of charge. Beyond the taco, the food is uninspiring and at times, flat out terrible. Mushroom quesadillas ($108), while mushy and bland, were inoffensive and unmemorably ho-hum. The same went for a medley of corn, bell pepper and zucchini which is listed as a side ($38), served from a kitchen that is obviously apathetic at veg cookery. However the food went from uninspiring to flat out terrible with the Birria ($238), which is typically a rich dish of lovingly braised goat in a fiery and complex mole-like gravy. At Mamasita's (HK), 5 graying tough-as-bullets hunks of lamb sit in a thin soup redolent of Campbell's tomato soup. In fact I could probably do just as well to buy some discounted lamb meat and boil it up with a can of Campbell's and call it at a day for less than 25 HKD. The service is clumsy and the food comes out in a puzzling progression... the veg side comes out first (probably because it's sat wilting in a warming bin), then a taco, then the birria, then another taco, and finally the quesadilla (perhaps because its the only thing cooked to order?). A single star has been added because the hot sauce is one of the best restaurant hot sauces I have tasted in Hong Kong. In concept, execution, and value, Mamacita's fails in every way. I would take a cheap Tex-Mex chain over this shite any day of the week.
