We ordered a taco platter ($158), which consists of each of their four tacos - Mexican chorizo, beef carnitas, grilled tiger prawn, and signature beer battered fish. As we both don't eat beef, we were able to substitute the beef carnitas taco with a fish taco. We also ordered a grilled chicken burger (base price $110), and added extra toppings of cheddar cheese and portobello mushroom. Do note that each extra topping costs $15. We were tempted to get truffle fries as well. But the last time we got fries at a burger place, we didn't finish them, so didn't want them go to waste again. Food justice yo! They also had a special BOGO offer of Estrella beer during their happy hour. The taco platter arrived first, presented beautifully in a taco holder (see photo). The tacos were delicious! While I expected them to have salsa of some sort on the side, they brought me a bottle of Tapatio instead - I absolutely thrive on this stuff, so thumbs up to them! Still, some fresh salsa would have been good too. The chorizo and fish tacos were solid, but for the prawn taco - the prawn's head literally took up half the taco! Ahh! Our customized chicken burger came next, and it was so deliciously juicy, thanks to the portobello mushroom. The chicken was also tender and tasty. A solid gourmet burger worth returning for. Having spent a significant amount of time in SoCal, I was a little bit disappointed to see that the tacos at Ted's Lookout were flour-based. Real authentic Mexican tacos use corn tortillas. So, are corn tortillas not sold in HK at all...? Also, the guacamole in question... Mysteriously smooth without chunks of avocado (FOR REAL), tomato, onions, and all the goodness that comes in real guacamole. The second time this month that I've come across such pre-made/store-bought guac at a restaurant... :( Nevertheless, still giving 4 stars for good service and a cool, hip environment to hang out and enjoy good food and drinks. I look forward to trying the grilled street corn and other drinks on their menu the next time I visit.

Maybe I am being a bit too harsh but the food was okay and the service was not the best. The Pork Neck and Rice dish did not taste like the usual pork neck that I'm used to. It was cooked differently and maybe it was the meat that was used but it was not very tender. The salad seemed out of place as well and for the price, the portions and quality of food did not meet my expectations. Also the Iced Coffee barely had any ice (as pictured) and tasted very strange. While the food was mediocre and somewhat decent, the service seemed lacking. I'm familiar with the restaurant culture both in the US and in Hong Kong and I'm usually more lenient with Hong Kong Style restaurants just because service is usually not treated as a big deal as much as it's emphasized in the US (with the use of tips and the style of training for waiters). So maybe I'm being a little biased... but since this was a western style restaurant, I think I subconsciously expected better service. Our waiter was not very attentive and looked annoyed every time we asked for anything as simply as a straw or cream and sugar for coffee. She didn't seem busy but it really seemed like she was bothered by serving anybody in the restaurant. I would come back to see if there are improvements and I like to give people the benefit of the doubt that maybe the waiter just had a rough day, but I hope I'm not disappointed next time.

Despite it's wannabe Mexican flair, Agave is more of a place to knock back a few margaritas and tequila shots than it is a place for chocolate-y mole and handmade tortillas. The food doesn't win here, but it is one of the only places in Hong Kong that showcases excellent Spanish live music. For anyone who has been to their sister location in Central (https://www.yelp.com/biz/agave-tequila-y-comida-%E9%A6%99%E6%B8%AF-2), the Wanchai Agave feels remarkably different. Seedier than its LKF location, it is perched above ground with an open patio to people watch while sipping a drink. When it comes to the food, my inner Mexican self is not terribly impressed with the greasy execution and inflated pricetag. Much of the food is either over salted or over cheesed. The menu is comprised of mainly quesadillas, nachos, ensaladas, enchiladas, antojito appetizers, burritos, tacos and fajitas. There are also some classic items like cochinita pibil ($158HKD), chilaquiles de res ($118HKD). And there's even a few options for molcajetes (think Mexican bibimbap wtih stone bowls), which range from $150-220HKD. My sad enchiladas rojas ($164HKD) was drowned in sauce and caked in ranchero cheese. There wasn't much meat inside the tortillas, and even the accompanying rice and beans were skimpy portion wise. Even the tacos ($138-168 for 4) were teeny tiny, but loaded with salsa and fixins. At about $4-5 USD each, I was more disappointed at how bland my pork and chicken tacos were. Even the ground chorizo quesadilla ($128) was a blanket of wet cheese and grease. The bar is prominent and loaded with various tequilas and mezcals. Shots anyone? (The answer is always "Si.") The selection is pretty impressive, with slightly more obscure brands like El Tesoro ($98HKD) and Correlejo ($98HKD). All shots range from $68-428HKD, which is no joke price wise. Drastically cheaper are their other spirits in the house, which get even cheaper during their happy hour. One of their major highlights is Chris Polanco, their main squeeze for the live music. The man knows how to work a crowd and sings a hell of a rendition of all sorts of Mexican songs. It's easy to sit at the bar, rock a drink of some kind and just let Chris do his thing on the guitar.

Asked for very spicy and medium spicy, and the very spice was sort of spicy while the medium wasn't spicy at all. Drinks are authentic mexican pops and they're super good! Guava is awesome! If they fix the quality of the chip, these would be spectacular, they would survive being in the oven part better. A great nacho chip needs to be a touch salty and bit heartier. Whilst browsing that menu, I found myself yearning for the good / cheap Tex-Mex restaurants that are popular across the United States. It's the food that most American's think of when they think of Mexican (even though it's not even close to the real thing). At Mamacita's (TX), tacos come three to an order and are served with refried beans and rice and costs $9.99 USD (roughly 77 HKD) At Mamasita's (HK), a single beef cheek taco costs $68 HKD. It's piteously small and outrageously expensive for such a dear portion of food. But then again this is the restaurant that charges $78 for chips and salsa whereas most restaurants would provide this free of charge. Beyond the taco, the food is uninspiring and at times, flat out terrible. Mushroom quesadillas ($108), while mushy and bland, were inoffensive and unmemorably ho-hum. The same went for a medley of corn, bell pepper and zucchini which is listed as a side ($38), served from a kitchen that is obviously apathetic at veg cookery. However the food went from uninspiring to flat out terrible with the Birria ($238), which is typically a rich dish of lovingly braised goat in a fiery and complex mole-like gravy. At Mamasita's (HK), 5 graying tough-as-bullets hunks of lamb sit in a thin soup redolent of Campbell's tomato soup. In fact I could probably do just as well to buy some discounted lamb meat and boil it up with a can of Campbell's and call it at a day for less than 25 HKD. The service is clumsy and the food comes out in a puzzling progression... the veg side comes out first (probably because it's sat wilting in a warming bin), then a taco, then the birria, then another taco, and finally the quesadilla (perhaps because its the only thing cooked to order?). A single star has been added because the hot sauce is one of the best restaurant hot sauces I have tasted in Hong Kong. In concept, execution, and value, Mamacita's fails in every way. I would take a cheap Tex-Mex chain over this shite any day of the week.
