Having tried the chicken and pork in both taco and salad form, neither left me overly impressed. And while I can't quite put my finger on what it is, there seems to be something about the flavour of the lettuce that doesn't work for me. I know others who like the place, but for me its not my cup of tea - plenty of other taco and burrito places that are superior in my opinion.

Out of everything Cali-Mex does, I think they do quesadillas best. Filled with chunks of white meat chicken breast, plenty of gooey cheese, a salsa of my choice (medium, please!) and then topped with sour cream and guacamole, Cali-Mex's quesadilla provides a comforting slice of the west when I need it the most. And their half-sized portion is perfect for one person, trust me. If you're like me and prefer to conclude your meal with a sweet, try the churros with caramel or chocolate sauce. By no means is this low-cal, but if you're going to indulge do it right. Right? Cali-Mex's website and new app make it easy to get your Mexican graving satisfied no matter where you live on HK island. And better to order directly through them instead of FoodPanda as Cali-Mex doesn't charge a service fee... who doesn't like saving a bit dough?

Last time we were there in March 2025 a new chef was just hired from Mexico. Everything tasted more authentic. The restaurant is a little hidden but follow your directions and all will be ok. It is more of a bar than it is a burrito joint. Come here for the drinks or for their attempt at Latin / Mexican bar food and bring some good company to boot. This is one of those places where a good time depends on who's drinking and who's not. The place has plenty of seating on the inside and quite a section for outdoor action. Folks can smoke and drink as they please outside with no problems. On the inside they have TVs galore, usually broadcasting Mexican soccer / futbol games. The staff is not pretentious and they have provided good service each time I'm here. Don't be nervous about trying to say the words on the menu, chances are the nearly app Nepalese staff might have trouble saying it too. Let's one thing straight: the "Mexican" food here is close to an abomination. Anyone coming here to get their fix of sopa tortilla or the next great mole poblano will be sorry they did. The bar is stacked with versions of bar friendly Mex, which includes nachos, quesadillas, and tacos. Most of the aforementioned is incredibly mediocre, but being that HK is not blessed with quality Mexican fare, the food at Tequila Jack's is hardly a surprise. Do however, indulge on their themed nights. On Saturday nights for example, is steak night for $108 each. It is a 10oz steak with some fixins like fries, veggies, and corn on the cob. I'm usually not terribly crazy about cheap steak but theirs is a slight exception. My steak has been cooked perfectly each time and the marbling / fat actually melts in your mouth. I have been here since the prices were $90 and the steak has been one of the only highlights food wise. On the drink front, they have a legit array of Mexican beers along with a stellar selection of tequila. It's probably the most abundant collection of tequila I've seen in the hood. The prices per shot aren't cheap ($140?) but if money doesn't matter as much the drunks are in their own league at TJ's. Lastly, if you're sitting outside at night: Watch out for our furry friends running around. They have caused quite a stir in the past. And *do not* feed them.

Don't think by me giving this establishment a 3 that I will not be back. 3 means "the ambiance is genuinely hispanic, the tacos were great, the nachos were not so great, but we will be back to give something else on their menu aa try to truely decide." Coyote Bar screams the ambiance of mexican food. Downstairs is more of the bar scene and upstairs is a quiter option for table dining. We sat upstairs. From decor to music, it feels like a hispanic joint...for being a hispanic joint in a Chinese country! Service was quick and staff was friendly. They have an abundance of Margharita options...like 2 full pages of them. So if tequila and margharitas are your thing, this might be your place. I had a Cubre Libre instead and it was a pretty generous booze pour and glass size. We shared nachos and fish tacos. Fish tacos were fantastic...warm, great fish, light batter, good sauce, sweet and salty...they were really delicious. The nachos fell a little flat for us. It was the chip. Nachos are all about the foundational tortilla chip! The toppings were good, but it appeared that once the nachos are made, they must pop them in the oven to melt cheese and meld all the ingredients together. Subsequently, when they do that, they suck the moisture out of the chip. The chips were limp, thin and a bit dry. If they fix the quality of the chip, these would be spectacular, they would survive being in the oven part better. A great nacho chip needs to be a touch salty and bit heartier. We will go back and try maybe the burritos and/or enchiladas. There was someone at the table next to ours that ordered a salad with shrimp on top and it looked really good. We live on the other side of Hong Kong, so this will not be a regular stop for us. But if you were seeking out Mexican food, this was as authentic as I have seen yet since moving here.

However, when I review, I take into consideration of local competitions, I am also comparing it against with Chipotle, America's top cali mex restaurant. And I give Cali-mex a 3.5 It must be noted that everyone's taco preference are different. I personally like my flour tacos soft (hard tacos are NOT authentic, but whatever floats your boat), al pastor or carne asada, from a grimey mexican food truck with a lot of cilantro, salsa and lime. I ordered 3 BEEF TACOS for $78, you can pay more for higher quality meat and I believe it was $98 for ANGUS STEAK CUBES. The food came somewhat quickly but there was no line. The tacos are HUGE. prepared to be STUFFED from 3 tacos. personally I think 2 is the perfect number for ones this size (authentic al pastor I usually get 4) So you may want to share instead of devouring it all for lunch. I also did not like how you had to order all 3 of the same meat. How difficult is it to scoop another meat? It's a bloody assembly line! I can tell the flour was not commercial ready made, it was fresh, however, it can do wonders heating up the tortilla first. I don't understand WHY this simple step is missed. It literally takes 5 seconds but makes it taste infinitely better. There were also no onion/coriander and cilantro (or very minimal) but they give a scooping of vegetables and some shredded cheese. They also ran out of medium salsa which was my first choice. I asked for light sour cream as I don't normally get my tacos with it, but I suppose that's how Tex-Mex does it (as does Chipotle) Note that it is $18 for guac, I don't normally get guac with my tacos so I skipped on that. Chipotle in LA charged $2.85usd for guac so I suppose this isn't ridiculous. *** Tips: HUGE tacos, share if you can. Favourites: The salsa, the hottest one was quite similar to el taurino/king taco in LA, which is hard to come by! Meh: Forced to get 3 of the same tacos. Could not adjust portions. It ain't cheap. Last words: I've had brick house (superior but also very different) mr taco truck, (inferior). This is in all honesty a solid mexican joint in Hong Kong. BUT if you ever have a chance to head to seoul, Gusto tacos there is a definite 5. I heard they may explore HK, so watch out taco joints. Takeaway ONLY

Despite it's wannabe Mexican flair, Agave is more of a place to knock back a few margaritas and tequila shots than it is a place for chocolate-y mole and handmade tortillas. The food doesn't win here, but it is one of the only places in Hong Kong that showcases excellent Spanish live music. For anyone who has been to their sister location in Central (https://www.yelp.com/biz/agave-tequila-y-comida-%E9%A6%99%E6%B8%AF-2), the Wanchai Agave feels remarkably different. Seedier than its LKF location, it is perched above ground with an open patio to people watch while sipping a drink. When it comes to the food, my inner Mexican self is not terribly impressed with the greasy execution and inflated pricetag. Much of the food is either over salted or over cheesed. The menu is comprised of mainly quesadillas, nachos, ensaladas, enchiladas, antojito appetizers, burritos, tacos and fajitas. There are also some classic items like cochinita pibil ($158HKD), chilaquiles de res ($118HKD). And there's even a few options for molcajetes (think Mexican bibimbap wtih stone bowls), which range from $150-220HKD. My sad enchiladas rojas ($164HKD) was drowned in sauce and caked in ranchero cheese. There wasn't much meat inside the tortillas, and even the accompanying rice and beans were skimpy portion wise. Even the tacos ($138-168 for 4) were teeny tiny, but loaded with salsa and fixins. At about $4-5 USD each, I was more disappointed at how bland my pork and chicken tacos were. Even the ground chorizo quesadilla ($128) was a blanket of wet cheese and grease. The bar is prominent and loaded with various tequilas and mezcals. Shots anyone? (The answer is always "Si.") The selection is pretty impressive, with slightly more obscure brands like El Tesoro ($98HKD) and Correlejo ($98HKD). All shots range from $68-428HKD, which is no joke price wise. Drastically cheaper are their other spirits in the house, which get even cheaper during their happy hour. One of their major highlights is Chris Polanco, their main squeeze for the live music. The man knows how to work a crowd and sings a hell of a rendition of all sorts of Mexican songs. It's easy to sit at the bar, rock a drink of some kind and just let Chris do his thing on the guitar.

While it may not be the traditional flavors of Oaxaca or whatever, as a Tex-Mex place it cannot be beat! We've had other attempts at Mexican in China but they always lack the flavor and depth of the stuff back home. So when we came here we had limited expectations. Honestly, my quesadillas were amazing! The ground chorizo was my favorite because it was so damn tasty! The enchiladas were great and our friends really enjoyed their vegetarian fare. The quest fundidio was a favorite of all four of us. They have good margaritas and the decor takes you back home even if it's just for a couple hours. The service was good although my attempt at having two meats in my quesadilla was translated into two different ones. I can't complain because I was really hungry and they were both delicious. It is pricey since it's in HK and the area is populated by brothels. However, just take an Uber to and from and you will not be disappointed.
