First time I went to verde on king street I did not have a great experiences due to the staff and the uncomfortable environment they cultivated when asked simple questions about the menu/ mistakes made on my order. However, I returned to the West Ashley location and had a very different experience. The employees were so friendly and made it a much more enjoyable experience. The salad topping selection has something for everyone and really allows you to be creative. I would highly recommend going to the Magnolia St location to enjoy a healthy meal! read more

We walked in mid-day on a Sunday, and rather than relaxing behind the counter as you find so many places, this team was actually CLEANING! They promptly got ready to serve us and we were off to a great late lunch. We had one of their standard salads and one of their specials. Both were great. Verde really lives up to its name (thanks Dora). It's all about the green. I've been trying to reduce meat consumption lately, and places like this really make that challenge doable. Instead of bland piles of lettuce with copious amounts of generic dressing you get thoughtful and fresh ingredients creating, dare I say, flavor explosions. I know that's a bold statement for a place that specializes in salads, but it's true. Downtown for second Sunday, I popped in with family and had a beet wrap. My wife got the Farmer's Market salad, and my brother-in-law and his husband each had the Soba. One with tofu and one with grilled chicken. I highly enjoyed my wrap. It was fresh, earthy, and flavorful. Plenty of vibrant color and taste was packed into it. I sampled my wife's salad which was good but a little boring compared to the Soba. The Soba boasted a peanut sauce and Siracha. Anything with Siracha is okay in my book. The salad bowls were pretty massive, by the way. Verde is a place you might actually be able to get full from just eating a salad. The drink selection was nice also. They had various fountain drinks, canned coconut water, and Honest Tea (a personal favorite of mine). I appreciated the compost, trash, and recycling bins they had going. It's a place you can leave feeling good for various reasons. My family and I all left feeling comfortably full and refreshed. I can see Verde becoming a mandatory stop to many future downtown adventures. read more

I am specifically giving this location a five star because if it was the My. Pleasant one then it would be a two. That's how big of a difference good customer service makes. Our experience at the King St. location has always been stellar. The staff is quick and personable and are efficient at making your salad just as you please. At the Mt. Pleasant location the staff were sloppy and put loads of dressing on my salad...so much so that it had a inch of soup at the bottom of my bowl. I appreciate good portions and all bites created equal...and for that I thank the King St. Verde. The fresh ingredients are plentiful. My favorite dressing is the champagne vinagerette because it is so light and sweet but tangy. I'm obsessed with this healthy fast food option and wish I could have it closer to west ashley. I gotta say it: even though I could, in some realm of possibility, stock all of these ingredients in my own kitchen and then make my own salad... I don't. So if I'm on King and want a salad, it's either Caviar & Bananas or Verde. C&B is (usually) more expensive, but it often depends on your add ons at either location. Stand out dressings: the curry, the sesame peanut (!) Ask for half and half of different greens if you want! I base my own with half arugula and half spinach. They also give you extra dressing for free if you ask (just in case you've run dry half way into your salad). Four stars for the fact that if you're craving a heartier make your own salad or wrap, the add on prices start to add up. read more

This was my first stop after checking into my hotel. Usually when traveling for work, it is such a challenge to find a healthy alternative for lunch. I live in the South and can appreciate good barbecue or fried chicken, but with an involved few days ahead, I was thrilled to feed on some good brain food. I sat to eat and wanted to knock out a few things for work, but one thing I was really challenged with was the temperature of the room. I was freezing my ass off while eating my chilled salad and chilled drink. I ate quickly and left as soon as I could. One really cool plus is that they have a "natural" soda machine. Great way to promote overall better healthy choices. If we drown our salad with a bunch of high fructose corn syrup, it wouldn't really be an authentic healthy experience. I have ordered from the downtown Charleston Verde many, many times and used to love their salads. Throughout June and July, I began to notice that my salads and my co-workers' were only about 75% full. Consistently. They used to be very full, and that combined with the convenience of delivery, was the only reason I could be okay with paying $13 for a standard salad. However, I learned today that Verde now charges a $1.95 delivery fee, NONE of which goes to their bike couriers. When I called to inquire about it, I was given an illegit-seeming spiel about "getting themselves up to the times and continuing to provide good, fast service." So, now ordering from Verde equals getting 25% less salad + a $2 charge for nothing + $1.50-$2.00 tip. This equals to about a $15 salad, and I will be purchasing them no more. A friend did say that delivering leads to significantly higher insurance premiums. Perhaps they experiences a premium increase and this is related to the $2 delivery fee, but if so, this should have been the explanation. And if the cost of buying fresh, local (?) produce has increased, Verde should be upfront about that and just increase their food prices across the board. I do not feel that their recent tactics are good business practice. UPDATE: One of the owners messaged me privately and provided the following feedback regarding the delivery fee: "While we have provided complimentary delivery in the past, in order for us to continue to the provide the service, we did need to begin assessing a small fee. This fee, while not a gratuity, is used to provide higher base compensation to our drivers for their hard work as well as cover the other expenses related to providing the service in terms of time, insurance fees, and other associated costs." Still not paying $15-16 for a salad to be delivered but wanted to be transparent and am glad that at least a small portion of the fee seems to go toward their bike couriers. They have also provided very good customer service in general when corresponding about these issues and genuinely seem to care about maintaining quality regarding portion sizes being inconsistent. read more

I love my steaks and burgers but also like to switch it up often health-wise. Verde could be the perfect spot for this. Excellent location right on King St, very cool store design, huge variety of salads and very nice staff. Their packaging is also very cool and perfect for to-go salads for the office. I do recommend to order the Mesa Verde which is extremely tasty and also filling. Because some of the other salads may leave you hungry. I recently got their summer special with watermelon chunks and had to add extra avocado and chicken to it to somehow make it a meal. They certainly are very restrictive with their extras and you will always end up paying about 11$ for a salad which is ultimately still a bit overpriced. They do offer however 'Buy 10, get 1 Free'. Overall, very tasty salads in a hip location. If they were a bit more relaxed with extras (2$ for a tiny scoop of chicken?), this would be 5 stars. read more

I saw an ad in the City Paper and decided to try this place. I was not disappointed. The salad was one of the best I have ever had! The staff was awesome, speedy and everything tasted fresh! While I am not a fan of soda as a rule, I decided to try theirs which is sweetened with cane sugar. It was great. It wasn't as sweet as regular soda and actually quenched my thirst. I had the Mesa Verde which I am going to be dreaming about. It was served with a chipolte lime dressing that was out of this world! It's so nice to have a great salad place in town. I thought the prices were fair considering what you pay other places for a salad that tastes days old. I also like that they offer the sald tossed or chopped. I believe another Yelper referred to Verde as Subway that serves salads. I had to laugh because I think Subway is bad and Verde is good, all due respect to my fellow Yelper. Build your own salad or purchase a pre-made specialty salad. Can't go wrong there. Wish there were more of these places around -- they'd probably help drive some of junk food joints away. The cost, around $10 or so per salad, is pretty reasonable and comparable to most eat out prices. I had the traditional Mesa Verde, featuring chicken, romaine, grape tomatoes, avocado, black beans, corn, red onion, fresh cilantro, tortilla strips and fresh lime vinaigrette. You see anything wrong what that assortment? It was bountiful and good. If only I could replicate that at home! Obviously you can make something similar at your local grocery store salad bar, so Verde isn't recreating the wheel here, just providing a nice alternative to a heavy meal. Kudos for that. read more

I love Verde. Whenever I don't feel like making dinner, this is my number one stop. The selection is HUGE and always very fresh. There are so many different combinations and flavors to design into your food that it never gets old. I am able to get a flavorful and colorful salad for myself and a meaty hearty salad for my fiance. The service is always over the top. All of the people that work there always are extremely friendly, happy to help, and very welcoming. They always take the time to actually hold a conversation and seem happy to help. What a fantastic experience! In town for business meetings and meeting planning, so we were sort of obligated to eat at the fancier places for dinner. We wanted something light, healthy, and fast as we made our way from venue to venue and meeting to meeting. LOVE this concept! While I could drink gallons of Southern sweet tea, I don't like running off the calories in the summer heat and humidity, so the unsweet, and green tea options were a hit with our group. Your standard 'chop-chop' salad place. Large dining area if you want to eat in and the staff was nice. The usual suspects as far as ingredients, but not the huge selection you have in large cities. For instance, there is really only one vegetarian option in the proteins section - basic tofu. Not grilled. Not sauteed. Just tofu. YAY: good selection of drinks and sodas. Cucumber + sparkling water is a nice option. NAY: I had my salad in the popular 'wrap' format and the wrap basically just spread open like a big beautiful whole-wheat flower upon unwrapping. I went during lunch with a coworker. The menu offered a selection of different salads as well as create your own options. The line moved quickly and the staff were friendly, but the salad was just another salad, I have to admit. I like that they are chopped and the level of dressing was pretty good (they didn't skimp or drown it). It's absolutely good place if you want a salad, but the salad didn't stand out from anything else I've had. On the plus side, I will say it's a great healthy option, a nice quick place for a weekday lunch, and a pleasant atmosphere, just nothing I'm dying to return to as soon as possible. Simply stated, Verde serves ok salads that are kind of overpriced. I've ordered from here a couple of times and never been overly impressed. The last salad I got from there had "avocado" which was inedible because it wasn't ripe, and somehow the avocado pitt ended up in my salad. It wouldn't have been as annoying if I hadn't paid extra for the avocado as a premium side. Only real upside is that the delivery option is convenient since I work downtown. Edit: Now that Verde is charging an additional $2 for delivery, I won't be ordering lunch from them anymore. After a slightly rainy day, I was hoping to find a salad bar because I was craving a salad. To be honest, I didn't have high hopes of finding one since we were in the south and I know salads, a restaurant that only serves salads are more of a California healthy kind of thing. I got pretty excited when I found a solely salad place in downtown Charleston. They have a lot of different salads on the board and a make your own salad option as well. I got the Farmer's market without the beets. The worker was really nice and said since I didn't want the beets, did I want to add more of one of the other ingredients or something else. I think I asked for corn. It's made super quick although granted, there wasn't a line when I got there nor did a line form while I was waiting for my order. I think when school is in session, this place can get pretty packed. I ate at the restaurant, which I saw a lot of other customers do as well. It was pretty chill, just me enjoying my fresh green salad. The Green Goddess dressing was light, so it really helped elevate the level of health I was aiming for. Price wise, it's really only a dollar or two less than west coast prices. Still, worth it for a healthy lunch in my opinion. read more
