a brick building with a sign on the front
    John B.

This place is in a corner brick building and is a pure takeout with only a couple of tables in front; no table service and no restrooms. However, even in that limited capacity they were quite busy and struggling to keep up with demand. They offer totally vegan cuisine that is largely Italian in style, with some gluten-free options as well. Normally hard to get Italian without wheat and dairy, so they are really going for it here. And you know what? I was impressed. The free garlic knot I sampled during my long-ish wait was presumably doused in olive oil or cashew butter or something, but it was as fresh and delicious as could be. They were tearing off fresh dill to put on some other dishes, and while I considered the Buffalo sandwich, their core option was also delicious, a sandwich with some kind of flaxseed based pattie, cashew cheese, and an abundance of flavor. They also had a freezer with some of their creations to go. Hopefully they'll become more efficient at service as this is a new place, but for Charleston, particularly given the loss of the nearby Gnome Cafe, this is a new standard-bearer for totally plant-based cuisine.

What a hospitable owner!! I'm not a vegetarian but I loved everything we ate! Go visit her!!

    Strawberry Ice Box Cake $12
    Jessi M.

I stopped in here for lunch on a Thursday as soon as they opened for the week. The hours are very odd which makes it a little difficult to catch them if you're from out of town. I had seen the posts from last week on the Charleston Vegans page on FB and really wanted to try the Tiramisu but I missed it since the specials change every week. I figured I'd give the Strawberry Ice Box Cake a try instead. It was alright, pretty much a tub of CocoWhip for $12 lol. I was a little taken back by the prices, as 3 items rang up to a $50 total. When I made that comment in the group, I got a bunch of backlash about how this is a small business and rent is high. Maybe it would behoove profits to have more operational hours? Just a thought. Then it could lower prices and make it more available for more people to buy because at that price, even if I lived in town, I probably wouldn't be back. The food was good and I like that apparently it's all made from scratch, but I didn't find my sandwich worth $17, especially when it just came with Ruffles lol. It's definitely worth a try but I wish I would have made better choices so I could be as impressed as the rest of the people in the group.

When we visited on a weekday evening, we were seated quickly with no wait! We started with the corn ribs, which were honestly one of the BEST appetizers we've ever had! They had the texture and flavor of ribs but were made from corn and served with an incredible chipotle dipping sauce that brought everything together perfectly! For our main dish, we ordered the spinach and feta pita, which was warm, gooey, and packed with flavor. The pita was stuffed with spinach and feta, making it rich and comforting--almost like a warm hug. It also came with a fresh side salad that was tangy and refreshing, which balanced the richness of the pita really well! I do wish that the pita was a bit more flavorful on the inside, not just the outside. My husband also ordered an Old Fashioned and said it was excellent. Overall, the food felt incredibly fresh and thoughtfully prepared. If you're looking for a cozy spot in Charleston with fresh ingredients and great flavors, this place is definitely worth visiting!

We didn't invite the whole crew because I've learned that my friends don't enjoy large groups for brunch, lunch or dinner. Everyone gets impatient! So we kept it a secret and only three of us headed downtown for brunch. We were sat in the first booth/table right in front of the hostess stand. Just on the other side of the wall was the bar area that has the beautiful moving flowers. It's definitely a show stopper and photos and boomerang videos are a must! Since we had all looked at the menu, we came in with a plan for apps, but we were still up in the air on entrees. After ordering some Prosecco, we ordered their peaches, tomatoes, and burrata. My last brunch with burrata downtown CHS was at Sorelle. So I immediately compared the two and felt Sorelle won. I also found the peaches and tomatoes both to be mealy. And it was peaches and tomato season, so that was disappointing. The second appetizer we shared was the hot blue crab dip. The first bite of the dip was delicious. It's served hot and there is lots of blue crab. My downfall with this dish is for $26 they serve the dip with flimsy tortilla chips. I'm sorry, but for $26 and a hearty dip, you've got to give me toast points. Buttery, warm, toasted French bread would be perfect! After debating between their wagu smashburger and the short rib hash, the server steered me to the hash. And I'm super glad she did! That was the best bites of the day!! I love sauces and this was served with two. Both delicious. The eggs were cooked perfect and the short rib and potatoes were both great. I was stuffed and didn't even put a dent in the plate! My friends ordered the Shakshouka and their Benedict. I didn't try either of their entrees, but they both didn't love their choices. I'm glad my hash was excellent or this could have turned into a big birthday bust! Since it was my birthday the server had the kitchen prepare us a dessert. It took some time because it was the chocolate mousse cake I believe and it came out pipping hot! I was too full and only had one bite, but it was very sweet gesture. We don't dine downtown a ton. When we do we like to try new spots, so we won't rush back to the Select. But it was a good start to my birthday celebrations!

Just like the ATL location, the vibe was pretty and floral and the food was yummy. I hadn't had brunch there before, so this visit was still a treat. I will note that the wheelchair and handicap accessible parking isn't right near the entrance, which almost made us choose another restaurant once we saw that we'd have to park in the garage or across the street.

Before before getting to the food, the space was inviting and had a lot of cool touches. And the service was great! My wife, youngest, and I shared a number of plates. Some of the first include included the Kinilaw, the Lumpia, and the Laing. The Kinilaw is a yellow tuna dish. The tuna melted in your mouth and the flavors from the coconut-leche dressing, ginger, and jalapeño, as well as the fresh mint, added to the flavor palette. I didn't try the Lumpia because it is skinny spring rolls made with ground pork. My wife and youngest said they were great in really enjoyed the taste. The Laing was a vegetable dish involving creamy brace kale with garlic, ginger, and coconut milk. Of course it sounds different and it was, but in a really good way. Again, the way the flavors worked together was really great. The last dish we got was the Curry. It is grilled red snapper with braised, mung beans, tempura sweet potatoes over coconut red curry sauce and rice. It was so good. Again, the flavors in this dish were amazing. The fish was cooked just right. And the way the dish worked together was a piece of culinary art. They also had cool cocktails, good beers, and even mocktails for our teenager. Our experience at Kultura was better than we even expected from looking at the menu online. If you find yourself in Charleston, do yourself a favor and check this place out.

In looking for a restaurant for dinner on Sunday night I happened across Sorghum & Salt. The menu looked great so we made a reservation to eat a the Chef's Counter. This turned out to be a great decision all the way around. We were seated right in the middle of the Chef's Counter. The gentleman who waited on us was great. He explained the menu well and provided good direction on wine. All of the other employees we interacted with were friendly and helpful too. On the to important part, the food. The three of us shared plates throughout the meal. i want to hit the highlights. We started with the Seared Blue Fin Tuna, the Radishes, and the Cauliflower. We picked the tuna dish after watching one being made almost in front of us for another table. It was as good as it looked. It was different than any tuna dish I have had thanks to the cashew tahini the dish sat on. The flavors together were great. The Cauliflower was cooked, then maybe fried, and tasted great with the green curry and peanut sauce. We enjoyed this dish. Out of the three I think that, surprisingly, the Radishes were my favorite. The dish includes almond, charcoal, and green olive. There also was fresh dill that was great. The flavors were fantastic and took away some of the usual sharpness you have with radishes. If you go, try this dish. The mains we shared were the Market Fish and the Carrot Bolognese. The Market Fish was great. The sunchoke veloute, mushrooms, and salsa verde added great flavor. But I want to spend more time on the Carrot Bolognese, which was my other favorite dish. It included rigatoni, labneh, and ricotta salata. I am not a good enough cook to deduce how exactly the carrots were cooked and prepared, but it was a carrot based sauce over the rigatoni and it was simply fantastic. Even my carnivore wife and son thought it was amazing. If you find yourself in Charleston and want to treat yourself right, you need to make your way to Sorghum & Salt.

I was lucky to be the first there and they were able to accommodate me, party of 1. The waitress that seated and guided me through the menu was very informative and patient with me. I decided on the pineapple ginger fresh juice, which came in an individual sized bottle for you to poor over ice. It was so refreshing and tasty. I find myself wanting to go by just to get some. After asking that she ensure that I not order anything spicy, I decided on the Red-Red Ndambe dip which reminded me of a a black eyed pea chili, served with Naan. It was amazing. I felt like I was eating a vegetable bowl of chili, it was so comforting and flavorful. I would definitely order it again. I could not decide between the Thieboudieun (Grouper fish with jollof)or the Green Gumbo Okra (which can come with either broken rice or fufu), as they both were tempting. I asked her to pick for me, letting her know either would be fine with me. She decided on the Thieboudieun and I was not disappointed. The flavors were plentiful and great!! When I was asked by some patrons and anyone else that inquired, all i can say is THE FLAVORS!! I cannot fully describe them, but they were plentiful and delicious!! My only regret was I wish I had others with me so we could all try various items off of the menu. Everything was delish!! The atmosphere is very laid back and cool. My only negative, which is SO MINOR, but I feel I have to mention for hearty eaters, is that the piece of grouper was very small (in my opinion). I would say it was about 3-4 ounces of grouper, which is small for an entree protein, but it was delicious! With that being said, bcz I had the appetizer I ended up taking half of my food home for lunch the next day and that red jollof sauce rice was even better the next day! I cannot wait to go back and try something else on the menu!!

From where we sat, it appeared the dining room only seats about twelve guests. There may be additional seating elsewhere, but the space felt intimate and personal, like your in a friends dining room. The drink options are limited to juices, though we were perfectly happy sticking with water. Anita was fantastic about answering questions and helping us understand the dishes and their spice levels. We decided to share everything so we could try as much as possible. We started with the Suya Skewers, and they were fantastic. The seasoning was spot on and the beef was incredibly tender--each bite practically melted in your mouth. Next came the Mafe Peanut Stew and... holy cow. Absolutely delicious. Rich, comforting, and full of flavor. The portions here are generous, which made sharing easy and let us really enjoy the dish. Our final entrée was the Thieboudien, a beautiful grouper fillet served with vegetables and jollof rice. Another wow moment. The fish was perfectly cooked and the flavors throughout the dish were outstanding. We couldn't resist ordering a side of Ripe Plantains, and we're so glad we did. They were cooked perfectly--sweet, caramelized, and quite possibly the best plantains we've ever had.
