Good bye Fuel. The paper said their last day was going to be Dec 20. I went for a last sentimental visit on Dec 18 and they were locked up. There was a sign on the door that they were closed for a private event but there was no evidence of any activity. Oh well. They had a great run! I have been coming to this eclectic spot in Charleston for about 14 years. I first came because of a Guy Fieri Diners Drive-in & Dives episode and is a must stop when I visit Charleston. The business is in an old service station with the motif that follows with old gas station signage, oil cans etc.. very cool especially if you were a kid of the 60's or 70's. Also, there is inside seating as well as outdoor seating (courtyard with tropical plants and fans). Had the tacos, red salsa & guac! Awesome!! From a beverage selection, I had the spicy margarita and my wife had a vodka mule. Both tasty & refreshing! It a must do if you come to Charleston! As an FYI, parking is a bit limited. The atmosphere was fun, but the food was barely edible. I ordered the avocado salad. There were hacked up pale chunks of avocado. The avocado could not be sliced or cut because it was so unripe. Definitely not edible. Tried my best to salvage the lettuce. & I selected to add jerk chicken, which was edible - but tasted like it had been sitting around for a week. This place is an old converted gas/service station. Great service, ambiance, casual food and drink.

They had the best large table for our Bachelorette party. The service was a tad slow but that could be a number of factors like our size, Friday afternoon etc... The food was very good, and the drinks were not stingy and after 1 or 2 you either need a nap or to keep going. The outside patio is amazing so if you are in the area be sure to stop by and just grab a drink outside, it was lovely despite the heat and humidity. I ordered the Cadillac margarita which had blood orange and Grand Marnier and it was STRONG. I would probably go for the regular marg next time! We shared an order of queso and guac. Price: can't beat it Crispy shrimp taco: delicious and portion was giant. I'd order 2 tacos for lunch and 3 for dinner. Street corn: sauce has a bite! So tasty tho, could eat one a day for life. Nachos: delicious- loved the half portion- makes it easy for a "tapas" style dinner. Parking: very difficult. Small lot with room for like 12 cars. There also is not street parking anywhere near by. The authentic jerk chicken, fish tacos, burgers and hand cut fries~ as well as fresh salads and an Island Rice Bowl are all very delightful and all are a nice twist on the ordinary! Tacos combinations are several including Crispy Shrimp, Roasted Chicken, Braised Pork and Grilled Mahi. Next time my pick will be the Roasted Cauliflower Taco. There are some great starter items including Roasted Corn Chowder, Nachos, Guacamole and Crispy Jumbo Chicken Wings. Indoor and outdoor seating and tables are available and the large outdoor patio is a great place and sip and play! There's even a Bocce Court.....and Fuel Cantina is Pet Friendly!! The original structure was an old gasoline filling station which the owners have not compromised so the original light fixtures and functioning garage doors remain. Fuel opened in 2008 so nice long run for them! Rare. Lots of memorabilia to look at around the restaurant for those who have an interest in historic restorations. Featured drinks and the popular liquor brands abound so no worries. You'll have trouble making a decision as the drink list is impressive. Service is swift and courteous ~ and we had a nice booth in the front of the restaurant. Parking- which is a plus --is onsite. I had the jalapeño margarita and loved it. I had the avocado and corn salad, topped with pork. The dressing was a little too acidic for me, but otherwise was great. It was sweet and tasted more like a sweet potato dish ( it was topped with pumpkin seeds). I have been to fuel a handful of times! I'd definitely recommend it for casual dinning, large group dinning or a group happy hour! It's a relaxed atmosphere with a large patio so it's usually pretty easy to find a spot to sit! My favorite dishes are the Mahi tacos, plantains and sweet potato fries! The Mahi tasted very fresh, the plantains were sweet and and the sweet potatoes fries were crispy and just right. I've also tried the shrimp tacos which were fine, the Mahi just tasted better in my opinion! For happy hour the pain killer is a must! I'd also recommend the Cadillac margarita and the nachos to share! Heads up parking is limited so you may need to park a few streets over and walk a little bit! read more

Went here because of the DDD recommendation. The server said that they had a new menu. But she said the jerk chicken sandwich has remained on the menu through a couple changes. So Had the Grilled Jerk Chicken sandwich with sweet potatoes fries, the crispy shrimp tacos, a classic margarita, and the fuel mule. Everything was just ok. Nothing was worth writing home about. The chicken sandwich was good but not as good as I would expect having been on DDD. The location and ambiance is probably more noteworthy than the food. They have an outdoor back patio with ample fans. Went in July around 8pm and it was not hot at all. No flies. Wish the food and drinks were better. It has been a long time since I've been to Fuel! I used to live on Cannon street and loved stopping by here at the end of the day for some apps and a beer or mixed drink with my husband or friends. Back then, the food was quite "bar food" centric, and now the menu is updated with more of a Caribbean emphasis. I opted for tacos today, going with the mahi and pork. They were both great!! The mahi taco did have a lot of liquid come out when I went to take a bite- but the food itself wasn't soggy. Just an odd thing I wanted to mention. Historically I've gotten the chorizo nachos and love those as well. It was easy to be sat today, with no wait and great service. It's a very relaxed atmosphere, with a fun patio with lots of "activities" like a fire pit and a putting green. Very dog friendly, as well! read more

This was our first food stop when arriving in Charleston and it was so lovely to be able to sit outside. My husband got the nachos and I got the mahi wrap!
