Shrimp ceviche
Katie W.

We had some tasty tacos (5 for $15 was a deal!) The ceviche was also delicious . There was quite a long wait when it wasn't busy - FYI. We were finished with our tacos for probably 30+ minutes before we got our first drinks.

Small place, very authentic! We were greeted and sat immediately. The food was amazing! I could have easily kept eating tacos all day! lol definitely recommend it if you're in the downtown Charleston area.

Chorizo and potato taco, carne asada taco, and elote street corn

Delicious spot we stumbled upon. Came here to watch a fifa game. Multiple tvs inside by the bar. Staff is very attentive, food and drinks came out quick. Tacos were delicious, hot and fresh. Complimentary chips and salsa, that if the food never came out I would've been fine eating 10 baskets of. Raspberry margarita was great. Guy next to us had a michelada and IF WAS MASSIVE and looked delicious. Tajin on the rim and chamoy to give the drink some extra ummffff. Highly recommend the carne asada. Would definitely return.

Pineapple habanero margarita

Hands down the best Mexican in Charleston. I was incredibly impressed by the salsa, chips, street corn, choriqueso, and Birria tacos. Cute environment, parking available on site and around building, and exceptional bar service last night where I think the bartender made the pineapple habanero margarita straight from his heart to mine! Ha! Oh, and the churros!!!? Filled with what looks like dulce de leche/cheesecake, and HEAVEN! So good. So basically, I'll be here again!

Birria tacos

I thought the birria here was okay. The consume was pretty salty so it covered the other flavours it usually has. The tacos themselves were okay as well. I'm not sure if I'll come back because I'm still craving birria tacos since this didn't help. The pickled onions and sauces were good though.

Overall: 3/5! I am very grateful that they were able to accommodate our large group, but the food choices were limited among other things Location: 3/5; it was a bit tucked away on Meeting St. and also the parking was pretty tight. Inside the restaurant was COZY. It was super festive and cute, but honestly a little too crowded for a party of more than 3 people. When we came (around 6pm), we were the only group inside besides a couple of to-go orders, but around 7 pm, people started to pack in quickly because of how small the space was. The only table seating they had was the one for my group, and the other seating was bar-type seating! Service: 3.5-4/5; Our server was accommodating with our requests which was nice, but we were ran out of water pretty fast, and did ask for more but never got it, and also our orders came out one by one pretty slowly, so some people's food were cold by the time we could all start eating--I do understand though given that we did have 9 people in our party! I also wanted to say that I appreciated one of the staff members (she might have been the owner, I'm not so sure!) being pretty attentive because one of my friends' orders were missing a couple of tacos, but she noticed and got her her extra tacos quickly :) I would just say too though that the only reason this rating got knocked down for me was that they were out of the dishes/choices that my friends and I wanted, which was a little bit sad since we were really excited to eat them. Food/Drinks... ...Margaritas: I didn't drink any, but my friends did and they were HUGE. Their SMALL is a large at a regular restaurant, and their large is a JUMBO. I would say that my friends and I were shocked, impressed, and (they) were very content all at the same time! (they also have a Jumbo size if you wanted that too!) ...Enchiladas Verdes: The enchiladas were smaller than I thought they were going to be, but they were very tasty nonetheless! I would just say that I did wish there was a bit more chicken inside mine, but even with just a little bit, the dish kept me full for the rest of the night! (it's $2 extra to order chicken with the Enchiladas!)

I love the tacos here! The chorizo is my absolute favorite which I can't say about any other place. The quesadillas are huge. We had one with carnitas and it was excellent. Head out to the back patio and sit at a vibrant table while enjoying a michelada. I love trying all the sauces too so it's nice to have them on the table. The dark red one really had some heat to it. Last time I was in our server was nice but really slow and would disappear for long periods of time, forget things, and eventually left before bringing us our check. It was kinda weird, but hopefully a one off thing.

Huge margaritas

Who knew this place existed in Charleston?! I had planned to get Mexican at a popular place in Charleston but with a wait of 45 minutes, it wasn't worth it. I looked up this placed and made a call to see what their wait time was. They said "we don't have a wait!" My boyfriend and I came in to be surprised by the size of the place - it's tiny. We thought that there were no seats around the bar top, but there were. First off - it's a cute little restaurant, which feels pretty intimate. You can make friends easily at the bar top if you would like. Second - the chips and salsa is AMAZING! Especially the chips. They were so good. I feel like they make their own chips there. I didn't ask but I'm only assuming. Their margaritas are HUGE! They have so many sizes. The one we got seemed like a large but it was just a medium. The tacos were delicious. As a Californian, I am pretty particular about my tacos. These hit my expectation. I think they make their own corn tortillas (again, assumption). The salsa that they brought out was tasty and spicy! If you're looking for a good taco shop, definitely check this place out!

Burritos

Marg on marg on marg. Had the marg flight at El Pincho Taco and loved the tumeric one. Wasn't a fan of the other margs. This is a great hole in the wall right off the highway. Sat at the bar and service was speedy and super nice. Was given free chips and they salted the rims on the margs with different flavors. Mexican music played. Shrimp burrito was big and thick and good leftovers. Parking lot in front. #bergerknowsbest

IF YOU LIKE MEXICAN FOOD YOU MUST COME HERE. The food is so unique and delicious, and they are so consistent. Service and food is always so good, fresh ingredients always, and they also have really good deals. 4.99 for a marg any wednesday all day. I really cant recommend this place enough. Sandra opened the restaurant with her mom and they grind to provide a really great thing for charleston. Go support this place!!

When you walk in, there's a bar. We were surprised to find out there's outdoor seatings in the back. We had birrias and tacos, both were very good. Service was ok. We asked for more salsa but never got any. Other than that, it was worth the trip.

Street corn
Tonitra B.

Our server was great but that's pretty much where the good ends. I ordered two steak tacos and street corn and the food were not good. The corn tortilla was soggy and the steak was flavorless. The street corn was sweet and really had no heat. The only good thing was the pickled onions. The guy behind the bar kept checking his phone while he was supposed to be helping me pay my bill. I had to get his attention to continue helping me. Sorry but I don't recommend this place.

Al Pastor Taco, chorizo and potato taco, shrimp taco
Vy D.

El Pincho Taco. Nice outside seating, yummy tacos, and excellent margaritas! My non alcoholic strawberry margarita tasted very fresh and the right amount of sweetness. Standout taco for me was potatoes and chorizo. The shrimp in the shrimp taco had too much batter for my taste but I did enjoy the slaw topping. Al pastor is a classic! Service was also excellent. Would return.

Last night I placed a large order: burrito de birria, two tamales, pozole, large bag of chips , guacamole, drinks . After driving 30 minutes back to my hotel, I opened the bag to find the tamales were completely missing. Then I tried the pozole, and it was so salty it was absolutely inedible. On top of that, they didn't include a single condiment--just a bland, overly salty soup. I tried calling for 30 minutes straight--no answer. Left a voicemail--no call back. Not that night, not the next morning. Completely ignored. The next day, I went in person to give them a chance to make it right. I had my order number and explained everything clearly. Instead of even attempting to help, they refused to do anything without a physical receipt. No effort to look up the order, no accountability, no customer care. Just excuses. Expecting someone to drive 30 minutes back with uneaten food just to prove a mistake is ridiculous. I ended up having to go to Wendy's just to eat dinner after spending money here--that alone says everything. Mistakes happen, but the way a business handles them is what matters. This place clearly doesn't care once they have your money. This wasn't my first issue here, but it will definitely be my last.

It's not my favorite type of Mexican restaurant, as it's a little more upscale than I *personally* prefer, but if upscale Mexican is your vibe, then this'll be the perfect restaurant for you! They had an alright selection of beers, to include a couple of IPAs, but my friends and I didn't really enjoy their cocktails. They were expensive, but lacking in much flavor or zest. Besides looking cool, the taste didn't really match the aesthetic. Furthermore, the food was solid, but not that much better than your basic Mexican restaurant. As for the service, our waiter was nice enough, but he always seemed to be in a hurry, and was walking away while we were still trying to give our order. All-in-all, I'm probably making Matador sound worse than it was, but it was merely a slightly above-average Mexican experience, not a transcendental dining experience that I'll never forget. I'll give it 3/5 stars, and would recommend it based on your personal preference.
