Went here on Sunday night, around 8 pm. The outside is really cute with string lights around the patio. It would be a really nice place to sit in the warmer months. Inside it is well decorated and clean. It reminds me of the standard Mexican restaurants that I grew up going to. My husband and I shared a couple of plates -- the enchiladas verdes and Texas fajitas, with a side of guacamole and one chile relleno. We also received complimentary chips and salsa. I loved the salsa. It had much more flavor and spice to it than typical Mexican restaurants, without being overly spicy. The guac was pretty plain in my opinion. My husband enjoyed it, saying that a good guacamole doesn't need a lot in it. To me, it seemed to have a brownish hue like it had been sitting out for a bit. Flavor was okay. I just wanted a bit more. The Texas Fajitas were a good size. The same guac was on side plate. Chicken, shrimp and steak had good flavor and seasoning and had a generous portion. The refried beans were not great (my husband thought they tasted like ketchup) and the rice, to me, tasted like instant ramen. I still ate them though! The enchiladas verdes were very good. I like that their sauce had a little bit of kick to it and wasn't bland like a lot of places. Their chicken was also well seasoned. I feel like the meat in enchiladas is often bland, but both the chicken and ground beef were delicious. Lastly, the chile relleno was delicious. It was a bit on the smaller side and I believe it had beans in it, which I wasn't expecting. But I thought it added flavor to it and I liked it. All in all we will come back. Went here for chips/salsa and guacamole which was quite tasty, and guacamole is chunky as it should be. That to me speaks volumes of the quality of food, which I haven't tried yet. Typical beer and margaritas here, lacking in IPA's and stronger beers. Service was great here ! read more

Located off of Trolley Rd in an easily accessible area, Villa Cantina is a Mexican restaurant that warrants attention if one has that Tex-Mex itch. Walking in there's a lot of soul to the place, hats, murals, balloons, flags and all things that scream authenticity. I rather like that as it gives character to a restaurant in these days where everything is sterile and uniform. Walking in, my extremely nice hostess was quick to seat us on a slow day yet the waitstaff was a bit slow. First up the traditional chips and salsa were ok. The chips are light and salty however the salsa was a bit bland devoid of anything interesting. I think anyone who likes what has become a staple of "Mexican food" will find it agreeable. My formally significant other decided to order a margarita. The flavors were vibrant, although the tequila was used sparingly. It was like an adult drink with training wheels or something for a beginner. Aside from the drinks, I debated a big plate of nachos however having just moved from Austin and frequented the home of street tacos in America - San Antonio, I decided to order two tacos. The first was the Al Pastor. The pork was moist and had a slight welcoming char while the toppings of cilantro and onion added a nice "oniony heat" and smooth cilantro to balance out the flavor while a nice hit of lime really added a spark. My shrimp taco was very good too with 3 huge shrimp and were well seasoned and not overcooked. I liked the tortillas for both as they were airy but held together well and was satisfying. My former girlfriend ordered the three cheese enchiladas. I really liked the tartness of the green sauce as the tomatillos were in rare form while the cheese rounded out the flavor with a smooth milkiness. The tortillas were flaky giving way to the fork while inside the cheese offered some resistance and a nice filler. The enchiladas were basic but extremely effective as a great little dish. It wasn't the greatest I've had but it did the job. FYI - the red rice was pretty darn good! I could taste the rice being toasted in lard (or some fat) and separate kerns however if it would have had a little more seasoning it would have been perfect. At Villa Cantina, the food is above average, the staff is nice and decent speed while the atmosphere is fun and lively. Considering it's close I'll make an effort to come by and order some fajitas next time. I believe this will satisfy anyone's cravings and leave you stuff like a burrito. read more

This place actually surprised me. I've been skeptical about Mexican places in Summerville but we came here because we saw a coupon on our Harris teeter receipt! lol very decorative and colorful that resembled some cities in Mexico. My server (I wish I knew his name) young handsome fella took great care of us. Street corn was flavorful, my husband got a lunch special and I got the authentic tacos with lengua and steak. Restaurant is under new ownership. I met up with a large group of friends. Waitress was great...very patient with some in group asking about specific ingredients. Restaurant was clean. We were seated in the area next to the bar. I was surprised not a single person sat at the bar the entire time. I ordered chicken chimichangas. I was surprised when she asked if I wanted fried...aren't they always? Portions were perfect along with beans and guacamole salad. Everything was fresh and tasted delicious. Super yummy! I'm looking for 2 tacos, with rice and beans..it's not on the menu so my server is going to ask! Gaining points in my book! well she came back and they can do that meal for me! great news! I also LOVE the free nachos and salsa.. To be fair, I did not try much of the food. However, they let us come in like 45 minutes before they closed and were very kind an gracious about it. We had the queso, a couple of drinks (beer and mango margarita), and my friend had the shrimp cocktail, which was a much larger portion than was expected. Our server was very friendly and accommodating. The chips and salsa were tasty, the queso was warm and good as well. My friend seemed to enjoy the shrimp cocktail, but could not finish it all. Wednesday night about 6PM; no problem getting in, not many there. Service was good. Menu is super standard for Summerville Mexican. All pretty similar. I had 2 burritos (one chicken, one ground beef). I asked that they be served 'wet' and clarified that I meant covered with red sauce (I was willing to gamble here on what the kitchen considered 'red sauce'). Massive mistake, it came to me with lettuce, sour cream and tomatoes on top of that damn white fake cheese sauce that they put on everything standing still. So the waitress, looking at my plate, realized there was an issue and came back with a small side of 'red' sauce. No real reason to go on. Not a great meal at all. The chicken burrito was ok, the beef was not good. It was super grainy. On a brighter note, the salsa is good (not spicy, could use a little more kick) and the chips were light and warm. I would skip it and try another of the Mexican joints that seem to be popping up every where. Hopefully one will actually break out and serve better food. Food served SUPER fast, but on an extremely hot plate. So classic, slapping it on the plate and shoving it in the over /broiler to give it a quick heat-up. When this restaurant opened we were very excited because we had enjoyed Senor Tequila for many years. We have eaten at this restaurant, at least, once a week since it opened and have loved the food and the service. Unfortunately, our last two visits, today and on the 11th, were very different. On the 11th my meal was definitely subpar. The serving size was noticeably smaller and it was missing the white cheese that normally is on top. My wife's taco salad was only 3/4 full and was very bland. Not what we normally experience. Today, my meal was better but still missing the cheese and my wife thought they forgot the beans in her burrito until she got to the last bite and found a tiny bit of beans. We will be attempting one more visit. If the quality is still poor we'll have to find another restaurant. We'll be saddened to do that because you have always provided the best Mexican food in Summerville. Perhaps you hired a new cook who needs some supervision. We always have lunch and it might just be the lunch cook. read more

Weird place. Food tasted good but was executed terribly. Like the carnitas were seasoned well and the flavor was there, but the meat was too tough to chew. Basically jerky. The tortilla on my enchilada was so chewy I couldn't cut through it with a knife. Tossed it to the side and it also had a drizzle of sauce- that tasted good, but there was barely any of it. Margaritas tasted like dishwater. Maybe it was a bad night but the service also sucked so we definitely won't be giving this place another shot. read more

My wife and I had dinner here for the first time on Thursday 2/20/25. In the middle of the night we both got very sick, we didn't share anything on our plate. Later on Friday we figured it was food poisoning. We called the restaurant and spoke with the manager Armando, we told him what happened and he didn't even apologize. Even the salsa for the chips was mild. And, a crabby server did not help the experience. Say what you want about La Caretta, but their Bandera Burrito was huge and delicious. wish I could leave zero stars, that's how bad the service was. the server charged me for two mixed drinks that I did not order or consume. when I pointed this out to the server she would not change it. she took the itemized bill away and brought the same bill for the same amount just not itemized. When I told her it was still wrong she said well the other bill had been closed out so I had to pay it. It was the only time in my life that I left no tip. When you over charge me for alcohol that I didn't get you don't deserve a job much less a tip. I will NEVER go back to this establishment. If you do I suggest you review your bill very closely.
