He had been before and said the food was always good.I always figured it was the standard Mexican fare, but after eating there, I will say it's definitely a step up. If I ever return, I would only get the Río Chico Dip. It's warm queso with grilled chicken, steak and shrimp topped with pico de gallo. This was worth it! Unfortunately, my lime margarita just tasted like a bad mixer. The mango was better than the lime. But I would not order either of them again. The food is okay. Ok this was actually some of the best Mexican food I've had in a while! Our server was amazing. I wish I remember her name because she has a joy for her job that you don't see very often. It was infectious! We ordered a cheese dip with mushrooms and it was very tasty. I also tried their pineapple agua fresca and I highly recommend. Everything we ordered was delicious, but I especially liked the Pollo Tulense (Sliced chicken grilled with mushrooms, onions and bell peppers. Served on a bed of rice, topped with melted shredded cheese and smothered with our special red sauce and served with a Spanish salad). I have never had a bad experience at Rio Chico and this location also did not disappoint. Little did I know that they had a special Valentine's Day menu for drink. I knew I had to get the blushing fish margarita! It looked tasty and so adorable! To make it over the top and stick to the theme of love, they even served my drink with a heart coaster and matching napkin! Stop! That's Adorable! The service was great! My first thought upon entering was how bright and vibrant the decor was. This restaurant serves authentic Mexican dishes made from scratch. A friend told us that these recipes have been passed down from generation to generation. I had the blue motorcycle cocktail and the Rio quesadilla which were both very tasty and satisfying. I could have done without the refried beans. My boyfriend said his tacos were just meh. I also felt that there was a bit of a language barrier, which is why I'm giving this restaurant 3 stars. Good option if you are looking for a fast casual Mexican restaurant in the West Ashley area. They gave us 6 different salsas to try (we requested something super spicy and they brought us options which was great)... our favorite was the light orange salsa, not sure what is was called but it was a little creamy, semi spicy, and orange in color... great flavor. Ordered the Burrito El Jefe. It didn't have too much flavor - think the meat inside should be seasoned more (not sure that it was at all.) Not overwhelmingly good, but not bad! Service was good. This pace is really good. We've been here several times over the years and it's definitely has its ups and downs. But it's been very good the last few times I've been. I get a variety of things whenever I go depending on my mod. One of my favorite dishes I've had is the Camarones Al Mojo de Ajo. The shrimps are cooked really well and the scallops are cooked perfectly. 10 out 10 The queso and salad are also very good here as well. And the drinks are really good too. Just wanted to let everyone know, I had a shrimp fajita for lunch on Monday that I couldn't finish eating because the shrimp was grey instead of white, by Tuesday morning I had severe gastrointestinal issues. It's Wednesday and still going on. Worse I've experienced. The shrimp was cooked, but I researched why shrimp would be grey and it turns out some fishermen put tripolyphosphate on their shrimp to make them plumper. It's a chemical or a sulfite. I am super sensitive to sulfites. Just a warning to others that are sensitive to sulfites. You can tell shrimp has it by the color and the texture of the cooked shrimp. If it isn't white and orange it has it. The tripolyphosphate makes the shrimp look different and feel different when cooked. It almost looks raw. Not the restaurants fault. They just bought cheap shrimp. And the service was bad this time. The waiter never checked on us, didn't bring a few things we asked for and never refilled our drinks. That's why I reduced the stars. I'm thinking I will stay away for a while. And I won't be ordering any more shrimp from them. read more

Stopped into this Mexican restaurant, on my way home, searching for a quick bite on a Sunday. Had dinner at Rio Chicos. I ordered a steak taco salad and ceviche to go. Food was good. Service was good. The salad had many delicious ingredients, but missing lettuce! Someone forgot lettuce. So I ordered lettuce, and they charged me an extra 2.00. I spoke to manager and they took it off. Also the bartender made my cocktail wrong. That's why the 3 stars, but a little more attention to details, maybe lower prices a bit... they could easily turn this into 5 stars. I'll try again some time. I hope they learn how to make a martini by then. And the salad? 18.00 added lettuce and it was delicious with the skirt steak! read more

We decided to give this place a try because we were in the area, it was evening time, and we were starving. The place is pretty big and it wasn't too packed but still busy. Our server was not as customer friendly as he could have been. He seemed like he was in a rush and we were an inconvenience. The food was just okay. From the chips, salsa, and queso to the bland-flavored fatty gristle meat and lack of cheese. It was not flavorful as the ingredients tasted cheap. The margaritas are terrible as well. I first heard about Rio Chico through my church bulletin and since then happy I gave them a try. As soon as you sit down you're greeted with a basket of tortilla chips and their house made salsa. The menu is like a book - filled with helpful images and so many options. The portions here are perfect and the margaritas are powerful!! This is one of my favorite restaurants to enjoy. There's something wonderful about the combination of rice + beans, their sauces + salsas, washing it down with a margarita, and feeling alright in the world. The lunch quesadillas are quite large and there's plenty to take home for a second meal. The dinner portion is enough for three people! All of their meals are quite large and don't cost a ton. We've been coming here for 19 years when it was both Rio grande and Rio Chico and have always loved it. We recently went after not being in a while, and noticed several changes. First, the salsa is different and not for the better. The menu is new with fewer options and the authentic options like chili verde were not there. We did try new dishes which were good but definitely miss the authentic ones. The fried ice cream tasted off and was not good. The server was lovely and very helpful. I would consider going back but only if the salsa is changed back. Otherwise we won't sadly. read more

Typical Mexican restaurant with the usual suspects on the menu; nothing unexpected here. The service was fine, but it took a really long time to get our food - especially for a Mexican place since most of the ingredients are already made and just standing by to be put together - and they weren't even that busy. The corn chips arrived warm and salsa was good; just a touch of heat. Lunch menu prices are good - around $6.50 to $8.50 per plate - and you can get the lunch specials on weekends too. Their retried beans and rice were average; nothing special but not bad. The burrito was good, just not a lot inside. Menu said "stuffed with meat, onion, peppers and cheese"; not remotely "stuffed". Except for the cheese it was good though. The cheese was a solid mass of blah. The enchiladas were not as good; their sauce for them was bland and watery. They definitely needed salsa to help them have some flavor. We were in the area & decided to try this place for dinner. Overall, the menu seems similar to other local Mexican restaurants. My husband loves Mexican food & would eat it every week of he could. It is nicely decorated & looks they are expanding the restaurant space. It looked to be decently clean. The service was fairly quick & our server was friendly enough. Even though they seemed kinda busy, we didn't have to wait forever for our food. Hubby got enchiladas, I got some chicken & rice. Overall, it tasted pretty good, but nothing overly amazing. I'm going to simply say that their margaritas are straight sugar mix and maybe 1 oz of tequila and the service even at the bar was pretty bad even on a Saturday night. The bartender was much more interested in whatever he was doing on his phone and hanging out with his co workers than our presence. The menu has everything you could want on it. Our group got guac and queso for our chips and I ended up going with just two soft tacos with shredded beef (pretty tasty). The others got a chicken quesadilla which was pretty small and kinda loaded and some sort of combo plate which looked to be pretty good. We might try other places before returning back. read more

I liked the flavor of the cheesesteak burritos I got but the flour tortilla was thinner than I am used to. I found odd since the chips were thicker. We're new in town and looking for a good Mexican restaurant for when we're feeling Mexican (which is a few times a month). Rio Grande was the closest one to our house so we tried it out. Overall, we really enjoyed the food- the salsa was excellent and the portions were large (I even had a to-go box). Hubs had the chicken fajitas lunch and I had the shrimp quesadilla lunch. The sweet tea was also good and not overally sugary. We went later in the afternoon, around 3ish, and the restaurant was still pretty steady with a lot of locals. We really liked the rice and the different salsas (if you ask, they will bring out hotter or milder salsa). However, the shrimp quesadilla could've used another shrimp (only had 4) and the service wasn't overally friendly. The waiter/cashier seemed a little tired and overworked- not sure if they had a very busy lunch or what. We would return but will try other Mexican places before we can say they "won us over". read more

We have been going to this restaurant for years. It's name recently changed from Rio Grande but it is the same place (even the menus still say Rio Grande on them). Why did the name change? I don't know. But nothing else has seemingly changed. The chips and dip are gratis and great- we also always get a side of quaquamole to go with it.
