It's ok but not the best. Chicken chimichangas lack flavor Shrimp taco very basic I asked for more salsa I never got it It's not worth it. Servers leaking unless you are a friend of there's. Taco Bell is a better bet.

had a great experience at Maria's on John's Island! The queso and chips are absolutely fantastic--perfectly creamy and just the right amount of spice. Every bite was a treat. The staff here really makes the place stand out; they're super friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in. Definitely a spot I'll be coming back to whenever I'm in the area! Highly recommend it if you're craving good food and great service.

    Chimichangas and fajitas!

The best Mexican food on John's Island, and probably my favorite Mexican food in all of SC really.. everything from their chips and salsa to their fajitas to their fried chimichangas and the mucho grande burrito and bean dip. The service is impeccable every time to match the food. The price is right. The parking lot can be tricky, but all worth it when you're greeted with those chips and salsa! Keep up the great work Maria's, we will be back soon!

Online menu that does not disclose any 5% takeout charge.

tl;dr: UNDISCLOSED CHARGE FOR TAKEOUT--SKIP THIS PLACE! Sometimes when I do take out from Maria's Mexican Grill, I find that the bill seems high but at no point during the process am I given the opportunity to review the charges before processing my card (they hand you the handheld processor on tip screen). I let it go the last 3 times but it always bugged me so I finally requested a receipt tonight and lo-and-behold... a surprise 5% takeout charge! **I have included screenshots of their entire online menu with my review to show this charge isn't listed anywhere a patron might look before ordering their food for takeout.** Their prices have gone up and this sketchy practice on top of that is a big NO for me especially since their food is nothing special; I only came because it was convenient. Look, if a restaurant wants to charge a 5% takeout charge, disclose it clearly and then DON'T ADDITIONALLY ASK FOR A TIP, and give us the opportunity to review the bill on the handheld device first like some restaurants do. I don't even want to know if my previous tip % calculations included the cost of the 5% takeout charge or not--if so, that just makes me doubly mad.

Man oh man. Come in for the molcajeta it's off the hook and plenty for three. Get the Texas margarita jumbo. And you my friend are in paradise.

April 25, 2022 Another excellent meal here. We're we're a party of four. Sat outside on their patio. The waiters were all very nice and attentive. Food was all delicious. We asked for hotter salsa, they brought out their habanero salsa that was pretty warm. Just a little went a long way. Jalapeños in my tacos and a couple Negra Modellos and I was very happy. Love this place! I'm sure you will too.

    Steak quesadilla with sides.
    Harold N.

Loved that they were open so quickly. Lunch here was delicious. I'm loving the steak quesadilla. Also had the guacamole dip which was fresh made. Met with some coworkers for lunch and they had steak fajitas and shrimp quesadillas. My side of rice was delish the refries beans were a little on the runny side but it was good none the less. Price was reasonable with 2 steak and 2 shrimp plates I thought would be outrageously expensive even though I didn't today for the meal. It was still decent. Staff was great and friendly. Outdoor seating was shady. Great experience that I would definitely like to return to next time I'm in the area.

Johns Island doesn't have a ton of restaurants so the ones they do have are exciting. That being said, Maria's is really good no matter what the situation is! I got the Texas fajitas and they were really good! Their corn tortillas are amazing and a real difference maker. The service was good and a pretty cool environment, will be back!

Arroz con pollo w/ side of Diablo sauce

The chicken and rice is very flavorful, but I like extra spicy, and requested a side of the diablo sauce from another menu item. The diablo sauce is excellent. I want to bottle it up and take it home. Love the little potatoes in the Spanish rice. Great atmosphere. Quick service. Exactly what Mexican should be!

It's not my favorite type of Mexican restaurant, as it's a little more upscale than I *personally* prefer, but if upscale Mexican is your vibe, then this'll be the perfect restaurant for you! They had an alright selection of beers, to include a couple of IPAs, but my friends and I didn't really enjoy their cocktails. They were expensive, but lacking in much flavor or zest. Besides looking cool, the taste didn't really match the aesthetic. Furthermore, the food was solid, but not that much better than your basic Mexican restaurant. As for the service, our waiter was nice enough, but he always seemed to be in a hurry, and was walking away while we were still trying to give our order. All-in-all, I'm probably making Matador sound worse than it was, but it was merely a slightly above-average Mexican experience, not a transcendental dining experience that I'll never forget. I'll give it 3/5 stars, and would recommend it based on your personal preference.

While the queso and the meat were good (not much of it though), everything else left a lot to be desired. The sauces were not good and kind of ruined the food for me. Fortunately we were early enough to get a place to sit before the line formed out the door. The biggest complaint was the service. They appeared to be terribly understaffed for even a regular day. Service was sooooo slow. Hard to get even water refills. The food did arrive hot. It was very typical Mexican style food. I had a chicken macho burrito. The chicken was overcooked and it had a two shrimp in the filling. Fortunately I have no allergies to shellfish and actually like shrimp but his could have been disastrous for someone else. The restaurant was very loud and could also use some updates. In spite of the large crowd, and being grossly overworked, the staff remained helpful and friendly to the best of their ability which I give them kudos for considering the situation. Probably won't come back.

The salsa and chips were ok. Not enough salt on the chips. The salsa was nicely substantial, but very bland. We ordered the traditional margaritas with ice and salted rims. You could taste the tequila, but they used the premix and it was very diluted. The drink tasted like lemon flavored water with liquor. I got the street tacos and she ordered the Azul bowl. Mine had great mixture of well prepared meat, but without the added hot sauce, pretty bland. On singular tacos; they only captured it one shell. Had to eat them with a knife and fork; impossible to pick them up without disintegrating. Most place use two or more shell preventing this from happening. The Azul bowl was a mix of beans, rice, corn, steak, avocado and a drizzle of sour cream. Overall, it too, was very bland. The highlight was the refried beans, but almost cold when they arrived. The cost we thought were high compared to comparable places. This is kind of a run of the mill place, but you can find better, even here on James Island. I can't see returning.
