We have enjoyed going here for delicious homemade Mexican food. They always greet you upon walking in, and the inside has a bar, booths, and tables for outdoor dining. The service starts with their chips and salsa, and I just find them to be the best. The chips are slightly thicker but crunchy, with perfect amount of salt. Then the salsa is fresh and tasty. This visit we ordered street tacos with carnitas to start. These were excellent, the meat tender and small bits of pineapple added a bit of sweetness. Then we had tamales, enchiladas and chilaquiles. The tamales were also excellent, they were rolled masa with chicken, and were a good choice. We find Carmen & Juan to be the simple straightforward local Mexican restaurant, and keep returning to enjoy. read more

Family owned & run Mexican restaurant right here in the heart of Park West Mount Pleasant. They serve authentic Mexican food with fantastic pricing. The staff are super attentive and friendly. This is such a cute little restaurant that we decided to try when in the area. The decor is reminiscent of a quaint backyard outside and a relaxed casa inside. The servers were all courteous and patient with us and our little ones who can be a bit disruptive sometimes. The food is authentic and delicious. I just saw that it's been 10 years since my last review for Carmen y Juan's so we're overdue for an update. After going here for over 10 years, I can say that it is consistently delicious, the staff is always great, and the owners are some of the friendliest in the biz. Now that I live in Park Circle I find myself up in the Park West area less and less, but if I'm up near there for any reason at all, I'm already scheming in my head if I can work in a visit to Carmen y Juan's. Sometimes I grab a booth inside and sometimes I'll sit on the patio, but I always start off with a some house made chips and salsa and a bowl of queso. For my meal I usually get a few tacos with rice and beans on the side. All the meats are good, but for some reason the chicken is so different from anywhere else that it's become my favorite. If you're looking for something heartier then you can't go wrong with the carnitas. They are fork tender and bursting with citrus flavor. If Juan is there he will sometimes bring out a new item he's working on to try and I love getting a chance to chat with him. I hope to keep coming here for another 10 years! read more

This a review of the service. As a Dasher, I often take note of where customers are ordering from because I feel it is a good representation of whether to personally patron the restaurant. Upon arrival, the restaurant was empty, but as I waited for my customer's order, it quickly filled up. People came to dine in as well as carry out. When the manager bought me the food it was in a brown paper bag. She handed it to me by the handles and I proceeded to leave. Because the brown bag was bigger than my Dasher bag I carried it out, stepped off the curve, walked toward my car and the handle popped. As it started to fall I went to catch the bag to no avail. I returned to the counter and was approached by the same woman. I told her the handle broke and everything fell. She -proceeded to tell me that isn't her problem. Her demeanor revealed she wasn't going to do anything to help rectify the situation for the customer. Really? I hadn't expected her to be so crass. As it appeared she was unwilling to assist, I said that I would pay for the order to be redone, Ultimately, I didn't have to pay. And when she handed me the next bag she had braided the handles together and put the soup in its own individual bag. But, I write this to say, first impressions matter. Prior to this situation I had already sent a text to my mom saying we should come try this restaurant The encounter, with who I believe is the manager, completely changed my mind. read more

Carmen y Juan's puts so much love into their food. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I wanted to try some new things so I asked for recommendations and I was not disappointed. We started off with some stuffed jalapeños and they were fantastic (and really spicy!). We also ordered homemade chips and salsa, chicken enchiladas, shrimp tacos and a dish with poblano peppers with rice. Everything was hot and well-packaged and ready for me when I picked it up. Best tortilla chips coupled with amazing salsa greet you as you arrive. The tortilla chips are thick almost like pita chips. Great taste and amazing texture. Perfect for scooping up the best homemade salsa this side of Texas. On to our entrees. We were delighted with our selections and the portions were ample. I was stuffed and wifey needed a box to carry home. They charged us for the carry out container which seems odd but not outrageous. It was like .20. This our GO TO Mexican eatery when in the Charleston area. Service was very authentic Mexican. Our waitress is still learning English. Great time. Good vibes. We ate outside which was great too. I am new to SC, I have been looking for good Mexican food, being Mexican myself and having grown up with homemade Mexican meals, I have a bit high of expectations. The atmosphere has a homely setting and the staff are friendly. They were great however I speak Spanish and when I spoke to the owner in Spanish, he responded in English, I would of thought he would of been interested in speaking Spanish with me. We ordered the Carne Asada Plate, however it was too salty, the rice was ok a bit dry, the beans were good but not refried. We also had the three street tacos (carne asada), the food is just too salty. It is abnormal that they charge for the styrofoam containers. Maybe we will give them another chance. read more

Another long drive looking for authentic Mexican food in Charleston paid off! This little restaurant is as authentic as it gets, The music and ambiance makes feel at home as does the amazing food. We got chips right away which were home-made and tasty AF. For the main course I had a Pozole. The Pozole is a traditional mexican soup with meat and hominy. This pozole was on point, My only complaint is that it was not spicy enough, but it is probably adapted for the Charleston palette. The prices are affordable and I would be having lunch and dinner there if it was closer to home. Totally recommended. read more

I had a fair amount of this cuisine while living in Southern California, but this is South Carolina after all. 4 stars for service - Our waitress took good care of us, no complaints on that end. We received the check and refills in a timely manner. 3 stars for food - Food was average, nothing really stood out. I didn't care for the nachos with the cheese sauce. 2 stars for drinks - We each ordered a margarita here, I was not too impressed with them and they were super weak. These drinks were not cheap either considering it was lunch time on a weekday, no specials at that hour. I don't live in this neighborhood, but nothing really stood out enough to make me come back if I did. read more

Carmen y Juan's is a fantastic Mexican restaurant with homemade authentic food that you would expect to find in Mexico, it's such a treat to have a restaurant like this so close to Charleston. As you sit down, your server should bring you complimentary chips and salsa. The chips are fresh, hot, and made right in the restaurant and you can definitely tell by the great taste and texture. For drinks, I would recommend the Horchata or Jamaica agua frescas, we tried both and they were delicious, just like being back in Mexico. It was truly a hard choice to pick an entree, everything looked so great; ultimately, I decided on the enchiladas con mole. The mole sauce, which I find a difficult thing to do well, was very good. I'd recommend to get the cheese enchiladas instead of the chicken but that's more of a personal preference really. The rice and beans were also awesome. Nothing here is bought out of a supermarket or made out of a can, everything is fresh and tasty! If you haven't visited this restaurant yet then you have to go.. right now! Go! An outstanding meal! The Enchilada Mole is exceptional! Sitting outside in their, pet friendly courtyard is perfect! Always a pleasant experience. The waitstaff is extremely friendly and attentive. The menu is extensive. Outside sitting area in a quiet courtyard is also dog friendly. It's a great, authentic, home made Mexican restaurant. 12/21/2019 Stopped here for lunch. I still can't get over how great our meals here are. We both had great dishes with wonderful staff. Carmen and Juan are so nice. Honestly like you're family. Not sure why this place has 4.5 stars; that wasn't remotely my experience. Definitely NOT authentic Mexican food. Unless "authentic Mexican" means bland, tasteless Latin-like food. If so, they nailed it. Do I even need to say I won't be back? Didn't think so. The complimentary salsa was okay, but nothing special. The chips with them weren't that good; too thick and kinda hard. I ordered the Bistec a la Mexicana. It was basically just thin steak pieces and onion. The steak was tasteless; had to put salsa on it for some flavor. The accompanying rice and beans were below average. The rice had little flavor; again added salsa to help. The beans were watery and nothing worth remembering. To top off the experience our waiter was not attentive at all. He brought our food and we barely saw him again. Or I guess I should say we saw him, but he never saw us or stopped by our table. Waited a while to get the bill when we were finished eating. We even had to ask the other waiter (a younger guy who seemed very attentive to his tables) to take our money to pay the bill. Oh, and don't believe this is a cheap Mexican restaurant as Yelp indicates. The bill was almost $30 for two basic lunch meals with water to drink. My advice, go somewhere else for better food, probably at a better price. read more
