This review is for the Speakeasy... Nice little hidden gem. Small but adequate "one room house". Quirky decor but not "over the top"...in a good way. Fairly large "L" shaped bar, tall community table as you enter and several small cafe/bistro tables. The food was ok. The fried chicken (with Mac and cheese) stole the show! Moist, nice crispy crunch and really nice seasoning. The Mac and cheese was a flop. It was dry pasta and not much of the cheese. **could have been an off night for that. Friends said in the past that it was very cheesy and creamy. The Diner burger was two smash patties with the fixings. The burgers were pretty overcooked around the edges but overall not bad. The highlight of this visit was our server (Breezy) was one of the best servers we have had in Charleston by far! Speakeasy is definitely a great addition to the West Ashley area. Love this place!! The rustic/natural beauty of the restaurant is always nice and cozy. Everyone is always sooooooo friendly and nice!! Specials are always tempting, and last night I gave in! We started with the Okra "Fries", which was surprisingly amazing and full of flavor. Hoping they keep it on the menu. I Chose the Crab stuffed catfish over pimento cheese grits was the catch of the day and it did not disappoint. Fish was cooked to perfection and the grits were nice and creamy, even my leftovers this morning were great (grits weren't stiff at all). Tasted a piece of the fried chicken and it was great too. That oyster spot downtown cannot touch Angel Oaks fried chicken, and I've tried both!! The icing on the cake is ALWAYS the beignets. We shared and all agreed, it's a must when dining here. Angel Oak Restaurant on Hwy 17 South past Main Road intersection. We have been to Angel Oak several times over the years and were always happy with the great food. Very Cozy Restaurant with limited seating, make sure you speak up! Came in today to pick up take out order, 2 orders of the Fried Chicken Dinner comes with Mac N Cheese and Collards plus a dessert order of Beignets!! Oh My so Awesome!! The service was good for take out, just no terminal at hostess stand to run your credit card, so they have to run it in the kitchen, little annoying. Only other nock is the parking is very tight. Food is amazing! Started with an Arnold Palmer and sweet and it's freshly brewed. To start had the crab cake. Absolutely delicious!! Followed with the shrimp platter and fries, which came with a side of their col slaw. And lastly the shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes. Everything was delicious, fresh, and mouth watering. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance at 11:30am on a Saturday was quiet with music in the background and you could have a great conversation at your table no issue. This is such a little gem of a restaurant if you've never been. The ambience and décor are just lovely, and the service and food seriously just speak for themselves. Their Piggy Mac & Cheese is just delicious! Tender Pulled Pork at the bottom, topped with Mac & Cheese with even more cheddar cheese sprinkled on top and last but not least Bacon crumbles. Honestly, the most memorable Mac & Cheese I've had to date at a restaurant. Highly recommend if you're look for a nice little place for Lunch or Dinner. read more

I drive past here on my daily commute & wanted to give it a try. I'm glad I suggested it to my boyfriend for date night. The building is tiny but it has a rustic feel on the inside. Despite its size, it wasn't loud (or busy) for 7 pm on a Friday. The food was flavorful and the drinks tasty. After our meal we headed out back the speakeasy. There was a musician playing guitar & singing. I also noticed a back porch with outdoor seating. We could have ordered food in there as well. We preferred the vibe of the speakeasy due to the music. This is literally my favorite restaurant in Charleston. Upscale southern food. We have been 3 times and the food has been good and consistent each time. The service has been hit or miss. The first two times it was great, the last time we felt rushed and thought the speakeasy bartender was extremely rude. Half of the table ordered nonalcoholic drinks from the menu and the bartender stated "you're taking up a lot of space in my bar for not ordering alcohol" even though we did order drinks. Ambiance in the speakeasy behind the restaurant is more fun but the restaurant is clean. read more

Our first try for a Saturday 5:00pm dinner at Angel Oak Restaurant on Route 17 in Johns Island. Unfortunately as we entered, we did not receive a pleasant greeting just seated us without a smile. Hopefully this was just an off moment. We enjoyed a very yummy Salad of the day which was sautéed shrimp salad. The shrimp was very bland and tender, served over fresh large spinach leaves with hard boiled eggs, diced tomatoes, bacon and blue cheese crumble, served with very tasty blue cheese and balsamic dressings on the side. Everything tasted fresh and nicely prepared, making it a light yet satisfying light meal. The place definitely filled up. It is one room on the small side, low ceilings, almost cottage like. Service was average. Waters weren't refilled and this was before it got busy. Parking is tight and there is a cocktail lounge out back in what appeared to be a large shed. No real glaring negatives but not impressed enough to return right away with so many wonderful restaurant options in the Charleston area. read more

I went here for my birthday. The appetizer, the fried green tomatoes were wonderful. Maybe the best I've had. My wife got the shrimp and grits. I tried some of hers. We both agreed it was very good. I got the fried chicken. The quantity? It was an enormous amount of food. The quality? Fair and at times bad. The macaroni was decent, with some occasional bites that were very bitter and abnormal tasting. If you're a southern inspired place, your macaroni should be great. Frankly, Whole Foods has better macaroni. The greens were pretty good! I'll give them that. The chicken -- plentiful! Breast, wing and one other piece. But man was it salty!! My wife doesn't eat chicken but I let her taste some of the batter. The cook had gone crazy with the salt. I like salty food, but you could actually see how much salt was on it. The batter had a so-so flavor. Overall the actual chicken I would call "fair." If I compared the chicken to even a chain like Cracker Barrel, I'd say Angel Oak was a bit below that level. So, the place is charming. It feels like a neat spot, but the food didn't wow me. It was uneven at best. This is Charleston, and there's so many options. I wanted to give it two and a half stars, but went with three because of how good the appetizer was. It's always good to try a new place, but I'd have to admit that for Charleston -- they're not in the same league as a number of West Ashley places. Just my two cents. read more

I sat in the back cocktail area and let me tell you this place is amazing on a Saturday night. Live music, amazing staff and delicious food. The deviled eggs are a great starter option, served with two whole eggs (4 halves) they are done to perfection and the pickled okra is a great touch. The shrimp ceviche was not my favorite (but the toasted bread it was served with was delicious). It needed a bit more salt, lime, onion, and smaller pieces of shrimp. The truffle fries are always a hit so I highly recommend. The real show stopper here is the peanut butter pie and the amazing waitress even brought me an extra side of chocolate sauce which I highly recommend. After doing our shopping thing at Costco, we decided that it was time for a late lunch and so Angel Oak restaurant was the first place mentioned. I was not certain if they were open even though it was about 3:00 p.m. ir so. Google said that they are opened at 11:00 a.m. and so they were. Entered in and three waitresses and only two people sitting and eating at one side of this somewhat small restaurant. No reservations are ever needed here which is sometimes good and sometimes bad. Obviously this was a great day not to have to worry about being able to be seated. A couple of specials announced by our waitress Jessica. She was great throughout, checking back without being intrusive. No special for me as their fried chicken with honey drizzle is always calling my name here. Of course fried chicken is always something that I will go to when I am undecided about anything else to order. Collard greens are a great veggie here, as it has a slight bacon juice taste in the chopped collards. I had never tried their pimento cheese grits here but somehow it seemed to be calling my name like the fried chicken had done. It was a good selection with the grits soft and the color of humidity. Delicious to the very bottom of the bowl. As to the fried chicken, you can tell a great cook when the white meat is juicy and not the least dry with a crispy exterior, and that was how it was, and how it always is. My wife chose the crab meat appetizer on a bed of greens. A small taste of the crab meat was offered and I took her up on it. The crab cake was puffy, moist and not overly breaded and thus mainly crab. Such an enjoyable place to eat with simple surroundings and even a floor that looks distressed. Is the floor designed to be that way or is it just having been worn down over the years. I have always thought that it was designed that way. Not a big concern for me as I come for the food which is always excellent. A five-star place. read more
