While on our way to Wente Scout Reservation in Willits, CA, we realized it was 2:30 pm, and we hadn't had lunch. A quick search for coffee shops open at 3pm Friday in Sacramento near I-5, resulted in a bunch of Starbucks, a Philz, a Dutch Brothers, and Barrio. We have a preference for supporting local businesses, so we went to Barrio. We ordered a chicken empanada, bacon breakfast burrito, veggie breakfast burrito, Vietnamese iced nitro cold brew coffee, turmeric and ginger iced soy latte, soy iced latte. It came out to $51 plus tip. Chicken empanada - pastry was hard and crunchy, not flaky style. The shredded chicken was dry, but really tasty. Might get again. Burritos - they screwed up the bacon burrito, which ended up being chorizo. I'm not a fan, but my husband didn't mind, even though it's not what he wanted. Veggie burrito was bomb. Lots of egg, mushroom, spinach and onion. Lattes - bomb. All three were delish and came unsweetened. Add your own sweetener bar, complete with liquid cane sugar, sugar free vanilla, raw sugar, granulated sugar, etc. We got iced drinks, 24 oz. Paper straws. Lots of seating for hanging out, sipping drinks, munching on breakfast or lunch, and working on your laptop. Shaded and pleasant outdoor seating area with potted plants. Single restroom in the back of the dining room. Spacious parking lot and a bike rack in front, so your car and/or bike can be in your line of sight. Barrio is located next to a nail salon and friendly massage, and around the parking lot from SF Shun Fat Supermarket. Near a community library. read more

I really want to like Venus, formerly Barrio, but the inconsistency with their food menu is frustrating. Usually, they are out of gluten-free items by around 11am (on days they are open until 9pm). A coworker brought some of Barrio's empanadas for a meeting and they were so delicious and flavorful! If you're going to get them, the pickled sauces are amazing. Mind you, they are not your typical empanadas, but are an Indian-fusion fare. Think curry, chickpeas, like chana masala pockets... So I decided to take my hubby after shopping at Shun Fat (gotta get my Asian groceries while I'm at it!). There were some boardgames and toys for my son to enjoy. I ordered a cardamom latte. The coffee is great here. Not all sugared up like Starbucks. Looks like an artists' hangout. There are definitely a few regulars. Walking in it felt like it was Land Park's version of "Central Perk" with lots of seating. On their Instagram there are a few open mics and music every so often. I remember when we went here it was very nice. The atmosphere was very warm and inviting and the place was packed. The cafe felt very European inspired but there were many hints of Hispanic culture. There was a day of the dead altar and the names of food items had Mexican inspo. I do not recall the sandwiches that we ordered but whatever they were, they were really good. I ordered a latte from the fall menu, the churro latte, which was AMAZING. I don't remember what my companion got but he said it was equally as good! While we were there there was also a singer singing a cappella, which added a nice hint to it. Highly recommend this little hidden gem and try out their lattes! So good read more

I made my way to Venus Taproom with my mom this morning to grab a cup of coffee and a pastry. Upon entering this cute little coffee shop we were greeted by their barista Anna and Christa (I think that was her name!) delightful smiles from the ladies behind the counter. Anna helped us navigate the coffee menu and listed the available pastries. My mom decided on a latte and I had a Mexican Coffee (hot chocolate) and we both decided on the almond croissant, it had lovely layers of crispy butter flaky crust and a lovely almond paste filling with a light dusting of powdered sugar, the perfect accompaniment to our coffees. Service was amazing as I said and we definitely will be back to visit this little jewel tucked away! Kudos to the ladies working this morning, they made the morning a bit brighter and a bit warmer! Back when it opened, I brought my young daughter here & a guy in the kitchen was being all loud, talking about all sorts of filth & random stuff using F bombs left & right, and other assorted obscenities. I told someone there was a child in the dining room, but he didn't care. So we left & had not been back in several years. This week we returned for the first time in probably seven years. I was waiting on my drink and noticed FLIES on the quiche!!! Ew! I thought I'd be safe from anything harmful since I was getting a coffee drink, but no. A few hours after I drank it, I got very sick & my body could not purge that drink quickly enough. We will never come back here ever. read more

What a fantastic place to grab breakfast, some pastries and today? A quartet playing all kinds of songs - including "Friday, I'm in Love" by the Cure. Not pictured is the bacon and spinach quiche my husband inhaled. The lox of love sandwich is so delicious! And recently they switched to using Andy's bread. A local baker who I buy from already. Both the apricot and fig and Brie croissants were delicious, and I've eaten here a number of other times and can also endorse their scones. You can't go wrong with anything you get here. I stopped in for a "pick me up" at about 3pm this past Monday. I'm definitely not a regular. I frequent the business maybe once a month. So I walked in and stood at the counter. There were no employees around. No problem. I waited patiently....and waited. Finally an older Hispanic gentleman comes out of the back (I'm pretty sure he's the owner). He's sees me but doesn't say hi/welcome. He doesn't call an employee to help me. He also doesn't offer to help me himself. He proceeded to walk out the front doors and BS with a couple of guys eating at an outdoor table. I wait some more... Finally a young Hispanic guy comes to the register and I'm finally able to order my Caramalita. The absolute lack of customer service from the owner himself prompts me to write this review with a one star rating. I would love nothing more than to support local business. However, the owner of Barrio should either close up shop (because he doesn't give a crap) or learn what customer service means. read more

Found out about Barrio from TooGooodToGo app about a month ago and decided to check it out one Saturday morning...then we just kept coming back. Loving the casual chill vibe, the array of creative pastries that made my mouth watering. We started meeting friends here and everyone was impressed. The music they played was fitting and never too loud and we can carry conversations with friends easily. Their coffee was ok. I still prefer stronger Temple or Old Soul (even though they could have Off days..) Thanks for using sustainable togo containers guys! Love that. Barrio is my new go to place for a coffee and bakery I can't believe this place is so good and tucked away on the corner of this plaza. They have a lot of varieties and coffee. Additionally, a lot of signature drinks that you don't get at other places. Sitting here, sipping my coffee is very enjoyable as the decorations and ambience of this place is legit. Could be a one off- had an hour and was looking for a relaxing experience. I ordered a cold coffee and premade sandwich - heated. Only one in line and waited 10 minutes (I timed it) for someone to take my order at the counter. 15 minutes later got the sandwich. When I was finished I went to the counter to ask about my coffee to find out they had thrown the tag out. Had to take my drink to go. Pretty disappointing. read more

After waiting an hour, we asked for a refund. The supervisor refunded $21.00 on a $34.51 bill. We did get our drinks, a drip coffee and a Capuchino ($8.25). When I asked her to return the tip (18%) ($5.26), she said she did not have any options on the return screen to punch that in. She could only punch in food/drink items. I then said Well, I'll bring this refund receipt with me next time, and you can give me a free drink. She shrugged her shoulders and said I'll see then what I might do. I took that as a NO, too bad. My goodness, there was a tip jar right next her overflowing with cash. My husband thinks this is the worst customer service he's encountered in his 73 years. We also noticed that the receipt had no sales tax on it, although this was an eat-in order. I doubt we will return to Barrio. read more

My first impression: This place is like a coffee shop on steroids! They have many bakery items and they all look delicious. I tried the cherry cheesecake danish and it was heavy!!! I also ordered the Barrio bagel on a jalapeño bagel it has eggs, cheese, bacon, and tomato and lettuce. It's a perfect breakfast sandwich with a kick. They also serve alcohol! The store is pretty sizeable so you are able to study and they do have open mic during the week! I was also looking around and saw that they have a local artist's paintings displayed and for sale. I wanted something filling but not heavy and that's exactly what I got. The barrio breakfast sandwich was not over saturated with egg, and was well paired with crispy honey bacon, turkey, cheese, (not cheddar which was the best part), spinach and tomato. Very well put together. The croissant was crispy on the outside and light inside, not doughy like most croissants. The dining room was quiet and comfortable, and not busy but I sat outside to enjoy the air. They have a lovely assortment of plants to sit next to! I also had the Vietnamese coffee, for the first time and although it was yummy, it wasn't for me. Excited to go back as they have many options for coffee. read more

Honey Lavender Latte: This was a superb sweet drink. I don't have much else to say about it except that you won't want to share it with your partner... Would definitely get again. Santi's Turkey: I thought this was going to be your standard turkey sandwich, but I thought wrong. The flavor pairings were impressively complex and thoughtful. Every layer of the sandwich was equal and even, the bread was good quality and the ratio of filling to bread was also perfect. It's a perfect spring/summer sandwich with bright, crisp, slightly sweet and slightly tangy flavors. Italian Empanada: Basically a meatball empanada with plenty of traditional Italian herbs. Not bad, though I feel the pockets of air inside are a little too large and the bread is a little tough. I would probably get these again. I liked that among these three different empanadas, the bread seemed to be flavored a little differently (not sure if that is true or if it just absorbed the flavor of the inner ingredients, but it was nice). Mushroom Empanada: I really liked this, but you should only get it if you really like the taste of mushrooms because it is intense. I'm not quite sure which type they were, but maybe porcini or chanterelle? I would get these again. Wish there was more cheese (gruyère I think it was?). Chicken Empanada: I forget if this was chicken tinga... The flavor was good, but the chicken itself was pretty dry. I wouldn't get these again unless they just came out of the oven. Overall, I'm impressed with the complexity and thoughtfulness of Barrio's chefs, bakers, and baristas! I am excited to try more. read more

Cool place to hang out and work. The baristas are very friendly. I appreciate their empanda and pastry selection as well, they are very good and reasonably priced. However, the coffee is pretty terrible as it is extremely dark and possibly over-roasted and/or over-extracted. I also do not appreciate that the WiFi password is "buy something", which I feel is passive-aggressive and not welcoming. Seems like the owner thinks it is a funny joke, but it is not nice when someone has to ask what the WiFi password is only to have the staff say "buy something." Not cool to the staff or the customers. read more

Barrio, 'little neighborhood' is a hidden little gem of a coffee shop in South Land Patk, a good friend of mine, recommended. I tried the 'Cafe de la Oja' and a chicken empanada both really good and tasty. Very chilled atmosphere and even have some board games to play. Barrio didn't pop up on google maps for me when I searched coffee shops, but it did on Yelp. I saw a few pics and immediately wanted to go. I love looking for new local businesses to support, and this place built a community vibe that I have been yearning for. On a saturday morning, I walked into a semi-crowded spot with live music that is soft enough to allow for studying and talking. The coffee was decent, and pastry was pretty good. There were plenty of outlets along the indoor wall, and I saw several interesting variation of coffee drinks (eg churro latte). I also noticed a coupon when you check in for alcoholic drinks - seems like an awesome local community spot to hang out and spend time at. I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area. read more

I have had Barrio bookmarked forever before finally making it here on a Sunday morning for some coffee and a bite to eat. Plenty of parking with limited outdoor seating but plenty of indoor seating. I didn't expect them to have such an extensive menu of both coffee beverages but also food! They offer a variety of bakery items (sweet and savory) as well as breakfast items (bagel sandwiches, breakfast burritos, etc). I placed my order for an oat milk peppermint latte; sooo good. And I decided to try their everything breakfast bagel with avocado spread, scrambled eggs, and ham. Also, very tasty! My husband ordered a classic coffee and tried their bagel and lox. We tried this place for the first time and I'm so glad that we did. We ordered bagel sandwiches. The California (which is served open faced) and the barrio ( served closed) both delicious but the California was phenomenal. Very fresh! We also got iced coffees and a quiche to share which were both really good as well!! The staff was friendly and their seating area was clean and cutely decorated. I apologize it's taken me so long to get here and to write this... 3 YEARS 3 YEARS Y'all, 3 years to finally get my butt over here (re: off the Grid) and try this delicious slice of Suburbs breakfast goodness. But I finally decided to make this a priority and when Becca K. wanted to meet for coffee, I was excited to suggest this place. It's in a nondescript old shopping center. I've been here a handful of times for the post office and the soccer store, Kombat...but never did I realize the gold mine that lived on the side of the shopping center. When I pulled up, I was slightly confused. I anticipated something more, but it is nestled in with all the other shops. Even though it was freezing, the tables outside still had stuff on them. When I walked in there was a logo'd table set-up and it seemed like people trying to sell or offer something, I tried to ignore them. As I waited for Becca I took in my surroundings. A hodgepodge of furniture with random Christmas lights hanging from one side of the seating area. Along that side is a huge table, which seems as if its the managements desk. They had invoices out, office supplies, and a bunch of JUNK. It was really, really weird. It didn't bug me, but it wasn't what I expected. Their case of carb goodness looks beautiful to those carb lusty folks like myself. It was REALLY hard to decide if I wanted sweet or savory. In most instances I'd do both, but I was trying to be good. In the end, I actually ended up with their Bacon & Egg breakfast sandwich and a soy Honey Lavender Latte. They have perfected the breakfast sandwich. It comes STACKED! And the homemade brioche bun is really what seals the deal. The perfectly crispy bacon, fresh tomatoes, and blend of cheese and eggs are just the perfect middle to the story. They use a homemade sauce that I was a little scared to try, thought it may be too spicy, but it was really good. It had a small kick, but it added such a good flavor, I didn't mind. Overall, this place is eclectic to put it. But the food options, especially for those who love carbs and caffeine, have almost too many options to chose from! I've been coming here for a few weeks now. I was hesitant to write a review as I thought I was just having a negative experience with one barista. However, today I encountered major attitude and a sense of entitlement from another barista as well. I order the same thing everyday. Iced chocolate milk. I had asked the young lady to pour the hot chocolate over the ice then add the milk. Simple enough? Today the girl chucked the ice in the trash with attitude and still made it her way. She rolled her eyes and looked at another employee with frustration. The other barista that I asked to steam my milk to 175° tried to educate me on why she couldn't. I explained to her that my mochas always come out warm, I like them extra hot. Mind you I worked as a barista through my twenties. She too gave me major attitude and responded "yep" when I thanked her for my drink. I have been leaving there upset and a bit angry after my encounters. It is unfortunate because I like their drinks. However, due to the unprofessionlism I think I am just going to make my drinks at home from now on. I do not need to start my day absorbing their negative energies. read more

When it was Barrios , you could walk in at 12 noon and there would be an incredible selection of items for lunch and not today and not a couple weeks ago either.. a few empanadas and some croissants were left and it was noon time. The place was empty, which is an indicator of how bad it's gotten because when it was Barrios, you would walk in at noon time and it would be packed. Bring back the old lunch menu where they had the best quiche you could buy anywhere, and of course, there were chocolate chip cookies with the sea salt on them and a variety of empanadas not 2 kinds. It's really sad that the owners have ruined a unique, interesting hangout place for breakfast and lunch. It's really sad. read more

I am super impressed and happy about this place and will throw my full support their way because this place must succeed if we have any standards for good coffee places. Reading other reviews, I was reluctant and did not think I would like it. But it's a day off from school so my son and I gave it a try. First of all, it's charming inside. Great vibe. This place has a full kitchen and it is used to make their own baked creations! We tried just one- the almond croissant and it was wonderful. I do not know their brand of coffee but it was excellent. I got a macchiato and the barista made it perfectly. My son got hot chocolate and I am thrilled to say they have real whipped cream!!! The proprietors clearly know what they are doing and have high standards. The 2 men who helped us were friendly and efficient. I look forward to going next time and enjoying our drinks and food there and sampling more goodies. read more

I come here for the breakfast burritos. Top 5 of my all-time favorite breakfast burritos worldwide. I like to get it with bacon and extra tomatillo salsa, which cuts through the richness and takes it from good to great. However, it pains me to say that the quality of the breakfast burrito has plummeted in the pat 6 months. The quality of the breakfast burrito has become inconsistent. I suspect that due to the entree's popularity, they have changed how they are prepared. Whereas they used to taste like they were made fresh, the last 5 or 6 times I've gone for breakfast, the burrito has arrived molten-hot in the middle, with a brown, crispy, over-cooked to the point of crunchy, flour tortilla. I think maybe they are sitting in an oven or something, awaiting my order. The green tomatillo salsa that I am obsessed with also hasn't tasted fresh. Usually when it's fresh, it arrives served in a steel 2oz cup. Lately it's been arriving in a plastic container that's been sitting in the fridge for a while. I can totally tell the difference! I'm hoping they read this and get their stuff together. Take the burrito off of the menu if you can't do it right. A couple of other thoughts on Barrio - service is very slow when there is a line. The person taking orders also does a couple of other jobs, so if you are in line to order and there are more than two people ahead of you, brace yourself to wait a long time. Oh, and the self-serve coffee carafe has a sign on it that says "no free refills." Seems stingy. I would prefer it to say "50 cent refills" instead. Anyway, if there's a line, you probably don't want to wait 7 minutes to find out how much they actually charge for refills. This is a harsh review because I love Barrio. I really want them to succeed but some things have changed for the worse in 2023. read more
