I'm not sure why this has taken so long, but I've been going to Barrio for a little over a year now... daily. It's become part of my routine so I figured I'd give them the love they deserve for keeping me caffeinated through my long days of State service. First and foremost, Andrea is one of the best baristas I've had the pleasure of receiving coffee from. She always has time for conversation even when there's a line and always gets my drink right. It does tend to get busy, but the staff are on point so the wait is never too bad even if a line looks long. Speaking of drinks, the honey lavender latte is a must try. The drinks and food items are probably the best deal you'll get in the area. I can typically get a latte and a fresh baked goodie for around $9. Try doing that at any of Star/Dutch/Peets without spending $15. You can also get .75 cents off your drink if you bring your own (clean) cup/thermos. Their baked foods vary daily (see photo for today's empanadas), but definitely recommend the egg and chorizo empanada and the cinnamon roll croissant. These are all made at their sister store (Venus Taproom) and brought in daily. This is a very cozy local spot, so if you like quality, service, and supporting local businesses definitely give Barrio a shot.

Needing to catch up with a fellow friend/colleague, I suggested that we take a stroll to Barrio Downtown to grab a cup of Jane. Being that it was my first visit, initially I didn't realize that this cozy establishment is a coffee shop (I have worked in the downtown area for over 10 years). Upon entering we were warmly greeted by an enthusiastic barista ready to take our orders. Since it was my first visit, I inquired about the barista's personal favorite drinks. She suggested the Signature Churro and the Pumpkin Churro. Since it is officially the Fall season, I opted to try the Pumpkin Churro that was on the Fall menu. After taking one sip of my Pumpkin Churro, I realized that I made the right choice. It very much so tasted like a churro (which I love on occasion) with a slight hint of pumpkin flavor. Although I'm not in the downtown area often, I look forward to making a return visit to try the regular Churro Latte and one of their pastries (as recommended by my wife). Thank you Barrio Downtown!

My coworkers and I were in need of a little pick-me-up, so we stopped by for coffee and empanadas. Unfortunately, they were already sold out of most of the empanadas a little after 10am, with only the mushroom left. The chicken tinga is my favorite, so I was definitely disappointed they were out, so I'll have to come earlier next time! I ordered the churro latte with almond milk, and as always, it was delicious. The staff are consistently friendly and greet us right when we walk in, which makes the experience even better.

So happy I stopped into Barrio on my drive through Sacramento! Unfortunately, I was unable to try the food since we arrived 30 min to close and everything was sold out (that must mean it's really good!), but the coffee menu was extensive and staff were super friendly. I ordered a summer special, the purple daze (condensed milk, ube cold foam) and my mom ordered their signature churro latte, both iced. We both loved our drinks! My ube latte was so thick it was difficult to drink but once mixed up it was amazing! My mom usually only drinks black coffee but was so happy with her churro latte, it was sweet and cinnamony and went quick. If Barrio was closer to SF I'd be trying every drink on the menu! We were on a road trip so were hoping to use a restroom - staff were super helpful in recommending the apartment building next door, which were kind enough to accommodate. Highly recommend! Next time I'm in Sacramento I'll definitely stop by.

I love this place when I can catch them when they are open. The ladies are so sweet. I've tried the empanadas~Birria, Veggie, and Breakfast all so good. The samosas so good too! The drinks are yummy. I've had their Raspberry Mocha, Raspberry Matcha, Cherry Matcha, and Caramel Latte

Coffee was coffeeing! Customized Caramelita. Got me going! And the EMPANADAS ARE BACK! How good are they? Good enough to have me wait for their arrival. Don't judge me, but i ordered all three. They had mushroom cheese, breakfast, and samosa. They came with 4 different sauces on the side! Breakfast and lunch combo all in one. Glad they re-opened and I definitely will be back.

The mushroom empanadas are terrific, and so are the cookies. I like their hot chocolate with an extra shot of chocolate and whipped cream.

This is kind of in a sketchy part of town, but worth a visit. We started off with a beef and a chicken empanada to share - These were fried and different than the Spanish ones I have had elsewhere. They were so good. I really liked the green salsa that was paired with it. On the recommendation of the waitress, we both got cafe de ariquipes which were coffees with caramel. They were sweet, but not overly so, which is the way I like it. We also got the bandeja paisa plate that was just ok. We felt the meat was on the dry side but the standouts were the plantains. We also got an order of the cheese arepa and asked for more hot sauce... She hooked it up with their homemade salsa which was so good and fresh tasting. That sauce is so good. All in all, a tasty spot. I'd come back to try some other things.

With authentic flavors and food items, there's not many like it around town. Bodega serves up food from the Caribbean Islands. One of their most popular dishes is their jerk chicken. They have this both as a chicken wing appetizer and as a plated dinner. I personally really enjoy white meat when it comes to chicken and the dinner plate was leg and thigh so I opted to go with the wing appetizer. My only complaint about it was its size. I thought it could have had more wings as I thoroughly enjoyed each one with the jerk sauce I added to it. The wings were very crisp on the outside and full of flavor. Adding the jerk sauce or their house made hot sauces enhanced the flavor even more. I could really see myself coming just for these wings! I also had the Cubano sandwich. This hot, pressed sandwich has ham, cheese, pickles, and mustard. It's a popular item that also is bursting with flavor. The combination of all the ingredients was mouthwatering. It comes with a side of fries to round out the meal. Service at Bodega was very nice. We found the servers to be very patient with us and the food came out reasonably. I was specifically there for a birthday party where we had cake being served from outside the restaurant. Bodega has a cake cutting charge, but seeing our tiny cake they waived it for us! It's a cute restaurant and definitely different than many you will find around Sacramento. If you're in the pocket area, Bodega is well worth a visit!

I didn't want to write this review but I had a concern about something about the menu. I ordered the tequenos de pollo as an appetizer and the menu didn't say anything about it having cheese in which was perfect. I got the order and it in fact had cheese. I'm lactose intolerant and really sensitive to dairy so I asked about the cheese being in it. He confirmed it was in there, so I asked if they can just take it back- the waiter said no. I then asked if they can just take it off the bill because I couldn't eat it. He said no to that too. My husband doesn't eat meat and my son is lactose intolerant so it was going to be food wasted and money down the drain. I was pretty shocked because I've never been to a restaurant where they can't reasonable accommodate the guest. I then ordered my entree and the chicken was very dry and overcooked. I was not satisfied but I knew they wouldn't let me swap it for something else. Unfortunately I'm not going to rush to come back. The waiter was friendly enough but not accommodating. I get nervous when it comes to food allergies because now I know that some restaurants aren't disclosing food allergens which is actually not allowed. There are folks out here with life threatening allergies, so these places need to be careful. I'm glad I'm not one of those people but it's still disappointing.

Well, maybe not every kind, but there's a lot of variety. Although I haven't been at this Valerio's in quite some time, recently I got a Bibingka cake from Valerio's and it was delicious. The coconut flakes and the banana leaf flavors really came through and although it's definitely an indulgent dessert, a couple of small slices per meal over several meals is ok, at least that's what I tell myself. Certainly it's a good treat, but probably only occasionally as it's pretty heavy and dense, it's not what I'd call a fluffy cake. Another favorite many get here is Senorita bread, I like them, but they are really pure carb so only a little one every once in awhile. All in all, Valerio's has been here a long time and it's sure to continue to do well as it provides a specialty bakery for the Filipino community in Sacramento area as well as friends who also love Filipino sweets.
