Driving through Sacramento after meeting my cousin that I haven't seen in a couple of years. We wanted to have a beer. But not the chilis bar. Not the fancy Scott's seafood bar. We wanted to be with our fellow Californians. Some Might say a Dive Bar. This place was it. Outside there was Lowriders and a Corvette. The smell of Cali Green permeating in the parking lot. As we walked in not knowing what we might find..... we found smiles. Laughter. A good time. We grabbed a beer. Had a seat. Watched some NBA highlights and reminisced. The crowd was dancing and laughing. The bartender was attentive. Within a few minutes Joey the owner stopped by our table to welcome us to his house of libations. We couldn't have been happier. This place can be tricky to find, especially if depending on Yelps directions. There was a bouncer outside and loud oldies music blaring, which was all fine. Once inside it was the definition of a dive bar. Dim, run down and outdated. The crowd was mostly younger people so it doesn't appear to be the same low-key neighborhood bar previous reviews mentioned as from my understanding it came into new ownership not too long ago. The cons were very minimal seating. It's a small bar but I think I saw a total of 5 bar stools. It's kinda ghetto and that takes a lot for me to say as I've been to plenty of sketchy places with no issues or feeling of tension in the air. The pros were decent drinks, prompt service and decent prices. Would I come back, probably not. If you're looking for a low key dive bar, this is not it. If you want a DJ'ed dive bar then give it a shot. read more

Ever since this placed changed owners it's been a whole different vibe. I don't really go to bars much because of the typical characters you tend to find at the some of the bars in Sacramento. When my wife and I went here we felt welcomed. The bar was packed but the wait wasn't bad. The service was all that you could ask of a packed bar. Prompt service with a smile. My drink was stiff, so I tipped well. They had some beer specials but I was drinking whisky. I'm glad to have this place around for when I'm feeling "thirsty" for an adult drink. Hopefully they will keep it up. This place has come a LONG away since the old owners and now I'm proud to have it around. If your in the area give it a try. There were some people, one who I assume must be the owner because he was sitting with a cute little chick talking numbers with a laptop. The bartender was an older lady who was kind of a mess. She couldn't pay attention if she wanted to. It didn't matter cuz I was doing my own thing. Only issue was that I couldn't get a refill. The Secret Entrance thing is kind of cool. Blink and you'll miss it. It's not on the street, but in the outdoor business suite next to the Kung Fu studio. The first thing I noticed besides the erratic drunkard reminding me not to meth, not even once, was the awesome snack machine in the corner. Instant Cure for the Drunchies! The next thing I noticed was the bartendress. Cool as a cucumber and not taking anyone's shiz. Matronly but youthful, offering a cold glass straight away. Loved her! I would definitely be back for her. Vintage Bud and Coors posters and concept art on the walls are a nice touch. I've never seen some of them before. Beer Wolf is here! I really struggled with my decision to review this place. I'm sitting at the Hilltop as I type (free wireless at a bar beats free wireless at a coffee shop any day) listening to two close friends plead with me not to publicize The Walnut... the one place in town you can always go and not run into anyone you knew in high school. But I do it for the good of the Yelp community... The Walnut is brilliant because... You never know what time it is - there are no windows, the doors are always closed and folks are always drinkin' like it's night. You can come in at 10am any day of the week and not feel bad about yourself. The drinks are stiff and probably the cheapest in town - grey goose and tonic for $4 There are two bartenders: Loretta and Rick. Rick is a Hawaiian-shirt-wearing, easy-going, heavy-pouring, low-key kinda guy - always looks sunburned and more than happy to tell you about his new fishing boat. Loretta usually looks like she just came from church - pink striped old-lady suit, or a flowing blue new-agey dress. Foul mouthed, and ready to play dice with you for drinks - they bring the party. You can bring in Chinese food from the place next door - it's really good and totally cheap. Extensive vending machine of processed food intensity. The jukebox is internet-based, so you can grab every song in the world... except Weezer's "El Scorcho" and Amy Dalley's "Men Don't Change" for some reason. This is the perfect bar for country music and classic rock - this is not The Park, and hip hop blaring from the jukebox against the wood paneled walls is just obnoxious - really, there is a place for that, but it's not The Walnut. Also, come ready for a cash-only, no frills, no customer service focus watering hole.... this ain't fancy. Last week, I told a group of fancy-pants young Capitol staffers that I simply couldn't take them there because I have a rep to keep up, and they were likely to say some crap like "This is so divey - I love it!" No high priced hookers at The Walnut Room....although there were a couple regulars who'd probably perform a sex act for no charge. Loretta the Bartendress is trippy. She wore a nice salmon pant suit to go with her jet black hair. Bright red lipstick. She's easy-going and friendly. The regulars were interesting characters. One of the regulars kept referring to the ATM as the "coke machine". The woman he was with seemed like she'd done a few lines in her day...or earlier IN the day. Can't be sure. Another old guy kept hitting on everybody...men and women. "Wanna ride on my motorcycle?" No thanks, weird guy...I ain't straddling nothing of yours! I managed to introduce him to a fellow dive bar member and then slowly slipped away from the table area. I've practiced this maneuver on many occasions. Not "people doing crank you might get stabbed" but old school, most people are forties and up, bud light posters and cardboard cutouts of cheerleaders sad dad type spots. So, if you're looking for some bougie 30 dollars a drink spot like what's gentrifying Midtown move along. But if you want beers at prices you didn't think still exist, no sunlight whatsoever, a jukebox, and a nice spot at the bar where everyone is welcome (literally everyone, glad to see they don't treat homeless people the way some of the more pretentious spots do) then this is the bar for you. Barmaid who looks like she dropped one too many sugar cubes laced with 'cid. Check. Rack of Frito-Lay potato chips. Check. Back entrance where fights happen and doobies are passed. Check. Front entrance where fights happen and doobies are passed. Check. Portly white chicks who like giving head to big black guys right next to the urinals. Check. All the tell tale signs are there and fortunately dive-bars usually equate to stiff, cheap drinks. Loretta's pour is on the heavy side; it gets even heavier as the night goes on. The jukebox has decent stuff in it, but also gives you the option of downloading stuff. There's also a couple of cheap, electronic dart machines and dice for you to kill time with. And who knows if you'll run into an ex-convict or gentle Indian guy with a bird on his shoulder. (Btw, the ex convict was nice too). How the EFF do you rate a dive bar? This place is as seedy as it comes. Oh my lanta, the vending machine was empty... I wondered if the machine was freshly delivered. However, they do stock laid back bartender (I think he was falling asleep at some point, and it was only 10:15pm), cheap drinks, the hauntingly empty vending machine, a discreet entrance (though please, carry pepper spray if you are worried you might get raped, or something, who knows?)... It wasn't the worst watering hole I ever saw. It was definitely above par for being in a shady little complex behind a Bel Air, complete with dice to play some games... but c'mon... I almost rated this place 3 stars because I am dear to the friend that chose it. This place is just a dive. Go there to get drunk for cheap and bring a DD... if you live in the area. The nut house is a local- that is all it has to offer. If you dont live in S. Land Park, Greenhaven or east of freeport than you still have other options. If you do live in these areas, than well....... you have this bar. A nice gourmet vending machine with all the imported popcorn and chips. Darts and booze. She surprised me with the decorations and all the snacks (devil eggs, ham rolls, nachos). Celebrating with fam is always the best! There's a walkway between two buildings with signs hanging for each business. You want to go to "Walnut Room". There are no windows and the door was shut with a large Change of Ownership slapped above the door... It looks closed, really. Pull the door open.. they're open. It's a dive bar. Full bar and no draft beer. All bottles. Vending machine for snacks. Several large screened TVs. Hooks under the bar. The bartenders were super nice. It was simple and easy going. Enjoyable.
