Spitzer's Walnut Room - Dive Bars Near Me - Sacramento, California

Driving through Sacramento after meeting my cousin that I haven't seen in a couple of years. We wanted to have a beer. But not the chilis bar. Not the fancy Scott's seafood bar. We wanted to be with our fellow Californians. Some Might say a Dive Bar. This place was it. Outside there was Lowriders and a Corvette. The smell of Cali Green permeating in the parking lot. As we walked in not knowing what we might find..... we found smiles. Laughter. A good time. We grabbed a beer. Had a seat. Watched some NBA highlights and reminisced. The crowd was dancing and laughing. The bartender was attentive. Within a few minutes Joey the owner stopped by our table to welcome us to his house of libations. We couldn't have been happier. We came into the right place. If you need a beer. A good local crowd of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds. This is the place. I would absolutely stop here for a cold one and a good vibe again. Huge shout out to Spitzer's Walnut Room and Joey. Thank You! Sorry I thought my pic was of the bar but it was my finger. Pics help the algorithm so I posted it anyways. read more

Spitzer's Walnut Room - Supposed to be the bar. May hand got in the way. - Dive Bars Near Me - Sacramento, California

This place is an awesome dive. Cool bartender. Dark. No hipsters. Please don't come here and ruin it, but if you're looking for a real deal dive with a cool vibe and strong drinks (and low lights!) this is the spot. Hidden gem for sure. read more

Spitzer's Walnut Room - Delicious whiskey for me. - Dive Bars Near Me - Sacramento, California

This is a great old school bar which we absolutely plan to visit again. Popped in for a couple of (tasty) Bloody Marys and we were not disappointed. Had we known that posole and taquitos were going to show up we wouldn't have stuffed ourselves at The Stagecoach first! Great service and can't beat the drink prices. read more

This place can be tricky to find, especially if depending on Yelps directions. There was a bouncer outside and loud oldies music blaring, which was all fine. Once inside it was the definition of a dive bar. Dim, run down and outdated. The crowd was mostly younger people so it doesn't appear to be the same low-key neighborhood bar previous reviews mentioned as from my understanding it came into new ownership not too long ago. The cons were very minimal seating. It's a small bar but I think I saw a total of 5 bar stools. It's kinda ghetto and that takes a lot for me to say as I've been to plenty of sketchy places with no issues or feeling of tension in the air. The pros were decent drinks, prompt service and decent prices. Would I come back, probably not. If you're looking for a low key dive bar, this is not it. If you want a DJ'ed dive bar then give it a shot. read more

Was looking forward to trying this place! Tried to go by last night! Google and Yelp said they were open, sadly, they were closed. I'd recommend to call beforehand. read more

Ever since this placed changed owners it's been a whole different vibe. I don't really go to bars much because of the typical characters you tend to find at the some of the bars in Sacramento. When my wife and I went here we felt welcomed. The bar was packed but the wait wasn't bad. The service was all that you could ask of a packed bar. Prompt service with a smile. My drink was stiff, so I tipped well. They had some beer specials but I was drinking whisky. I'm glad to have this place around for when I'm feeling "thirsty" for an adult drink. Hopefully they will keep it up. This place has come a LONG away since the old owners and now I'm proud to have it around. If your in the area give it a try. I might have to start going by here before I go grocery shopping. read more

Great spot to hide out. Was out house hunting and was looking for a neighborhood bar nearby. Holy shit! Found this little gem hidden away in a shitty strip mall. Had no clue as to where to enter until I saw all the beaters sitting outside. Slithered in like everyone else that was there, mind you it was maybe two in the afternoon. Place is dark af inside. There were some people, one who I assume must be the owner because he was sitting with a cute little chick talking numbers with a laptop. The bartender was an older lady who was kind of a mess. She couldn't pay attention if she wanted to. It didn't matter cuz I was doing my own thing. Only issue was that I couldn't get a refill. Who knows what goes on here at night but I'm dying to find out. With a name like this and the location, who needs a speakeasy?? Check it out. Update and let's see what's crackin. If I lived in the area, I'd hit it. read more

The Secret Entrance thing is kind of cool. Blink and you'll miss it. It's not on the street, but in the outdoor business suite next to the Kung Fu studio. The first thing I noticed besides the erratic drunkard reminding me not to meth, not even once, was the awesome snack machine in the corner. Instant Cure for the Drunchies! The next thing I noticed was the bartendress. Cool as a cucumber and not taking anyone's shiz. Matronly but youthful, offering a cold glass straight away. Loved her! I would definitely be back for her. Vintage Bud and Coors posters and concept art on the walls are a nice touch. I've never seen some of them before. Beer Wolf is here! Kind of like a mini museum of beer in here. Clean, fun, affordable, pretty much the perfect dive. Turned off by some of the company and the location, but literally everything else is aces. read more

Shannon makes this place the best. Love an owner who remembers you and makes you feel welcome when you come through the door. Great prices for drinks. Crowd there is almost always on the older side but it's a great spot to pregame before downtown or if you're too lazy to go downtown and want to go to a local bar. They have darts too which is always fun. read more

I really struggled with my decision to review this place. I'm sitting at the Hilltop as I type (free wireless at a bar beats free wireless at a coffee shop any day) listening to two close friends plead with me not to publicize The Walnut... the one place in town you can always go and not run into anyone you knew in high school. But I do it for the good of the Yelp community... The Walnut is brilliant because... You never know what time it is - there are no windows, the doors are always closed and folks are always drinkin' like it's night. You can come in at 10am any day of the week and not feel bad about yourself. The drinks are stiff and probably the cheapest in town - grey goose and tonic for $4 There are two bartenders: Loretta and Rick. Rick is a Hawaiian-shirt-wearing, easy-going, heavy-pouring, low-key kinda guy - always looks sunburned and more than happy to tell you about his new fishing boat. Loretta usually looks like she just came from church - pink striped old-lady suit, or a flowing blue new-agey dress. Foul mouthed, and ready to play dice with you for drinks - they bring the party. You can bring in Chinese food from the place next door - it's really good and totally cheap. Extensive vending machine of processed food intensity. The jukebox is internet-based, so you can grab every song in the world... except Weezer's "El Scorcho" and Amy Dalley's "Men Don't Change" for some reason. This is the perfect bar for country music and classic rock - this is not The Park, and hip hop blaring from the jukebox against the wood paneled walls is just obnoxious - really, there is a place for that, but it's not The Walnut. Also, come ready for a cash-only, no frills, no customer service focus watering hole.... this ain't fancy. Last week, I told a group of fancy-pants young Capitol staffers that I simply couldn't take them there because I have a rep to keep up, and they were likely to say some crap like "This is so divey - I love it!" Please mind your manners if you roll through. read more

Spitzer's Walnut Room...also known as the Nut Room. Not to be confused with former NY Governor Eliot Spitzer's Nut Room. No high priced hookers at The Walnut Room....although there were a couple regulars who'd probably perform a sex act for no charge. Loretta the Bartendress is trippy. She wore a nice salmon pant suit to go with her jet black hair. Bright red lipstick. She's easy-going and friendly. The regulars were interesting characters. One of the regulars kept referring to the ATM as the "coke machine". The woman he was with seemed like she'd done a few lines in her day...or earlier IN the day. Can't be sure. Another old guy kept hitting on everybody...men and women. "Wanna ride on my motorcycle?" No thanks, weird guy...I ain't straddling nothing of yours! I managed to introduce him to a fellow dive bar member and then slowly slipped away from the table area. I've practiced this maneuver on many occasions. Spitzer's Walnut Room is a place even the former Governor of NY could appreciate in a creepy sort of way. read more

I've heard a lot about this place and I'm glad I finally had the chance to go. It's behind a dumpster, literally. I'm glad I didn't try to go find this place myself, otherwise, I'd have never found it. I ordered cranberry and vodka all night and it was cheap. The bartender wasn't much of a talker, though I guess it was a Wednesday night and there didn't happen to be very many people. There isn't much ambiance to be had. It's small, with some dart boards. I don't know who was playing DJ that night, but I was loving the 90's music they were rocking. It's close to my place and the drinks are cheap. This place is a keeper. read more

One of the last true neighborhood bars in Sac. Great owners and patrons. Drinks are well priced and poured well. Always sports on the TVs and music on the jukebox. Almost didn't post this because we love having a place that isn't well known. But after the last 2 years these guys deserve to get caught up. read more

Marla, thank you You make every visit an awesome experience. I love the location, literally a walk away from my home. It's right next to round table. And some nights it's pretty off the hook. Only reason I gave it 4 stars is because some of the people in there are less than desirable to put it blunt. Other than that for the area it's very nice. I LOVE this bar!!!!! I know its a dive bar...but I do not care! I have now learned that the owners Ken and Shannon are some of the sweetest people out there! They took over this bar just over a year ago which is when we first went to this bar. They have great tasting drinks at wonderful prices. They keep the bar and tables very clean and my favorite part as a female, is the clean restroom! We have held several parties here and our friends and family always have so much fun. Spitzer's Walnut Room - Celebrating my husband's 30th birthday! - Dive Bars Near Me - Sacramento, California

This place isn't closed lol. Hopefully it was a mistake by Yelpers and not a plan on the part of the owner to keep dumbass hipsters out. Disclaimer: I LOVE dive bars. Not "people doing crank you might get stabbed" but old school, most people are forties and up, bud light posters and cardboard cutouts of cheerleaders sad dad type spots. So, if you're looking for some bougie 30 dollars a drink spot like what's gentrifying Midtown move along. But if you want beers at prices you didn't think still exist, no sunlight whatsoever, a jukebox, and a nice spot at the bar where everyone is welcome (literally everyone, glad to see they don't treat homeless people the way some of the more pretentious spots do) then this is the bar for you. Love it. read more

I went to try this place out 11/19/2022. What a mistake that was. As I was trying to find a place to sit a fellow stepped up to me, he identified as the new owner. He was asking me who, what, where when and why I came to the Bar. In front of the other bar patrons. I have never seen this character in my entire life. Someone then pulled him back into the kitchen area. I have never been treated like this at any establishment in my life. He's going to run this place into the ground! read more

If you thought drink along was miserable come check out walnut during the week, (Kelly Bartender) he will make it a lot worse especially if you're a woman, use to come all the time when Shannon was here n she would be glad I came in with a huge smile, I'm surprised the new owners haven't replaced him. He'll make smart remarks all night then will get upset that it's slow n he gets shitty money yet your customer service is as shitty as the porta potty out in the back... I'll come back onces Ebeneezer leaves read more

For an alcoholic in the area, Spitzer's Walnut Room offers you a nice, discreet place to get hammered. Spitzer's Walnut Room, aka, the Nut-House is the ultimate definition of a dive-bar. Barmaid who looks like she dropped one too many sugar cubes laced with 'cid. Check. Rack of Frito-Lay potato chips. Check. Back entrance where fights happen and doobies are passed. Check. Front entrance where fights happen and doobies are passed. Check. Portly white chicks who like giving head to big black guys right next to the urinals. Check. All the tell tale signs are there and fortunately dive-bars usually equate to stiff, cheap drinks. Loretta's pour is on the heavy side; it gets even heavier as the night goes on. The jukebox has decent stuff in it, but also gives you the option of downloading stuff. There's also a couple of cheap, electronic dart machines and dice for you to kill time with. And who knows if you'll run into an ex-convict or gentle Indian guy with a bird on his shoulder. (Btw, the ex convict was nice too). The Nut-House is a great place to kill time and your liver. read more

KEN AND SHANNON ROCK!!!!!!!! My wife and I took the bus here so we could get Drunk and not have to worry about driving! We were a little concerned because when I came here 10 years ago, this place was really trashy!!! Ken and Shannon are the new owners and they are turning this place around! CHEAP DRINKS CLEAN BAR CLEAN BAR STOOLS AND COUNTERS CLEAN RESTROOM I can't believe I'm rating a DIVE bar 5 Stars! $6 for a Long Island!!! $3.25 for a vodka/Cranberry! Arcade games are little on the old side, But I didn't mind! Awesome Juke Box! Ken gave me a great Price on Buying Rounds of Jim Beam Maple For everyone in the bar that night! The best part , Was when my wife and I were Clearly wasted.!!! Ken and Shannon took care of us as if we were family! They kept Refilling my Water Glass, they Brought us Slices of Orange and gave us free Pretzel Sticks! We felt really Safe with them There!! Thank you for the amazing Experience Ken and Shannon! How the EFF do you rate a dive bar? This place is as seedy as it comes. Oh my lanta, the vending machine was empty... I wondered if the machine was freshly delivered. However, they do stock laid back bartender (I think he was falling asleep at some point, and it was only 10:15pm), cheap drinks, the hauntingly empty vending machine, a discreet entrance (though please, carry pepper spray if you are worried you might get raped, or something, who knows?)... It wasn't the worst watering hole I ever saw. It was definitely above par for being in a shady little complex behind a Bel Air, complete with dice to play some games... but c'mon... I almost rated this place 3 stars because I am dear to the friend that chose it. This place is just a dive. Go there to get drunk for cheap and bring a DD... if you live in the area. It's definitely not your Sacramento "destination to be had". Sorry. read more

The nut house is a local- that is all it has to offer. If you dont live in S. Land Park, Greenhaven or east of freeport than you still have other options. If you do live in these areas, than well....... you have this bar. A nice gourmet vending machine with all the imported popcorn and chips. Darts and booze. I dont know really what else to look for in a dive. Its tucked away in the breeze way so if you dont know where it is, you probably wont find it. Thats good and bad, good because it keeps people away, bad because when I leave at night I always feel like im about to get stabbed. You take the good with the bad- Good bar though for sports and cheap beer. read more

This place is alright. The prices are a little inconsistent -- they had a "$2.75 margaritas all day, every day!" on their chalkboard last time I went, but they were more when they rang up at the register. Too bad I was too drunk to notice until 30 minutes later, while there was break in the conversation. This place is alright, but I much prefer Brownies to this place if you are looking for a neighborhood bar. Its cheaper there too. If you're needing a drink and in the area, its worth a stop. The juke box is usually in effect and theres usually something to keep you busy. read more

Recently reopened. They're open! 7 days a week. Located on S Land Park where you'll find Holiday Villa and other businesses. There's a walkway between two buildings with signs hanging for each business. You want to go to "Walnut Room". There are no windows and the door was shut with a large Change of Ownership slapped above the door... It looks closed, really. Pull the door open.. they're open. It's a dive bar. Full bar and no draft beer. All bottles. Vending machine for snacks. Several large screened TVs. Hooks under the bar. The bartenders were super nice. It was simple and easy going. Enjoyable.
