I've been eating Venus pizzas for 20 years. They are the best bar pizza around. My favorite is the pepperoni but if you want something different, try an "Elaine's Special". It's feta cheese, chicken and garlic with no tomato sauce. The cinnamon pizza is great for dessert. Great atmosphere, friendly staff (mostly all related), and reasonable prices make Venus my favorite restaurant in Whitman. read more

Best part about my experience, as the staff came in, the night shift, the waitress that took my order served them lunch . looks like the bartender is eating a salad, girl in the back had fries and her friend with pizza slices. While fine dining it'll never be, those who go there for casual food and a beer should be happy. I've found new appreciation where the bartender acknowledges your presence with regularity so getting another beer or food service is actually possible. The pizzas, like the other reviews say, are well done bar pizzas with good variety. It's not a singles bar or a family establishment( it wouldn't be all that bad for a family dinner but the place is dated and dumpy.. But it's clean and safe). I personally like it there better than the new, flashy looking and overpriced mcguiggans right up the street, the old "don't judge a book by it's cover" holds true in that comparison. read more

I don't know if anyone else has had issues with Venus Cafe in Whitman but I just had a horrible experience. 1st off I called in at 630 and asked to have it ready by 715 and they said no problem, got there and waited until 745 when the food was finally served. 2nd when I finally got home to eat it, it tasted like there was chemicals in it and when I called and asked about it the owner/manager said what did i want him to do and that the only way to help me was to bring the food back which I did. He gave me a refund and said that no one would ever use chemicals around food and if they did he would f***ing fire and kill them read more

Got some pizza tonight and so very disappointed! The pizza was not even cut in equal pieces. It was burnt, and the onions were cut in crazy pieces, not at all uniform. So many other places in town have better pizza. I used to love your pizza, you need to love your pizza again. Find some help who cares about quality. Just ate here for the first time and needless to say I will be back. Who doesn't love a family business? The owner came out and introduced himself! The pizza and salads are excellent and very reasonably priced. The restaurant has been around since the 1960s, and the Venus has secured a solid reputation for one of the best bar pizzas in the region. The Greek salad is delicious, and the ingredients are top notch. The pizzas themselves come in a variety of toppings and truly unique choices, like French fry and apple cinnamon. The only issue I have is the tiny waiting area near the takeout window. It quickly crowds up with patrons who apparently don't wait long enough before coming to pick up their orders. Every time i have orderd pizzia they tell me 45 to 60 mins then u get there and you have to wait another25-30 mins ! I first visited Venus Cafe 40 years ago. It was good then and it's still good. I don't know where all the negativity is coming from but my wife and I love this place. While we moved further away 6 years ago we still try to stop by fairly often for a visit; not as often as I like but I enjoy their pizza so much it is making me fat. We will often meet for dinner with our adult kids or my sister and her family. My other sister in Maryland insists on visiting when she comes to town. We brought half cooked pizzas with us on one visit to Maryland and her friends devoured it. We just froze them and put them in a cooler for the 8 or 9 hour drive. They just don't have bar pizza like this in the Annapolis area. John even lent us a pizza pan to cook them in when we got there. PIZZA & SALAD: Excellent. John, Peter and the other kids out back do a great job. SERVICE: Excellent. We usually get Sharon and occasionally Michelle. They're both great. I don't know the others but they always get the job done as well. One note.....we go in the evenings so I can't speak to lunch time or afternoon help. John will sometimes come out to the dining area to visit tables and ask if people are happy with their meals. PRICE: Excellent. They have half price specials during the week and my wife and I get out of there stuffed and with leftover for $30 or less. HUMOR: We eat in the dining room. We have NEVER had a sour disposition to deal with. Take a minute to get to know them. If you do have a problem, take a look in the mirror. The problem might be you. It can be a lively place and I do know one person that won't go there anymore. He also has a drinking problem so therein could lie the answer to his dissatisfaction. Humor can be risky so if you go in there wanting to be a funny guy or a loudmouth be prepared to meet your match. AMBIANCE: Nothing fancy. We like it the way it was and we like it the way it is today. When John and Elaine updated the booths and dinnerware we commented how they were spoiling us. One thing I do miss is the pitchers of beer but it's not a big deal. 40 years and I'll hopefully be visiting there until I die. To address a few of these complaints: 1. The decor is the way it is due to how old the business is. The Venus prides itself on its customers. That being said, because The Venus has been opened for 50 years, changes (even the smallest of changes) can disrupt loyal customers as they like that it looks the same to how it did when they began going there. 2. Wait times can get long due to The Venus only having two ovens in the kitchen (kitchen capacity is two). Good pizza requires seasoned ovens. The two ovens (convection and electrical) are older and well seasoned. Note: If you order a crispy or well done pizza, extra cheese or extra sauce, these types of pizzas take longer to cook. Well done or crispy means cooked more than a normal pizza; therefore, taking more time to cook. Likewise with extra cheese and extra sauce: they do not want to serve you your pizza so it's all soppy. In an effort to avoid this, they'll cook the pizzas a little bit longer. 3. They do not use grease in their kitchen. Oil, however, is a natural occurrence that happens when cheese is cooked at high temperatures, especially in industrial ovens. Try this in your own microwave or oven to see what I mean. 4. There are two specials: buy 1 get 1 50% off for pizzas (dine in) and buy 4 get the 5th for free (take out). These specials are every day. Therefore, The Venus charges for water (under $1 for bottled, as The Venus doesn't offer tap) and for soda refills. Beer, wine, and liquor are also inexpensive. 5. To say that the owners or the family staff does not care about their 50 year old business is a shame. If they did not care, their business would not be as successful as it is nor would it still be around after a half a century. It is not the easiest working everyday with your nuclear family while maintaining sanity or composure. Try to take on their perspective. We are all just people, trying to do our best. read more

I've been going to the Venus for years. It's my favorite regular spot for cold beer and great pizza. Some people say it could use an update. My boyfriend went over to Venus to get a pizza for dinner. Well waiting for the pizza he had a beer at the bar. I believe the owners son was working bartender and went back to my boyfriend (who had 1 beer) and told him he doesn't feel comfortable serving him and gave his money back. I was also kicked out as a teenager because the waitress got the order wrong- bbq chicken pizza instead of buffalo, when we said it was wrong she got the owner and he told us he would wrap our pizzas up to go (still the wrong bbq ones). So I really like the pizza. A lot- that is the only reason I am giving 3 stars. Unfortunately this place loses stars for two things. One, it's not really clean. Two- if you ever order a salad it is NEVER and I mean never fresh. We like the pizza salad combo and this place cannot do it. They serve, gross, soggy, brown lettuce. How can you not look at food before you serve it to customers. It's completely unacceptable. Last time I ordered a salad there was a large dead bug in it. GROSS. I have been going to Venus since I was a kid and over the years the pizza has gone done hill, to say the least. Not to mention the high prices you pay for what you get. We have given them numerous tries hoping it will get better but it doesn't. The pizza is greasy, sloppy and not very well cooked. I've been going sense a kid and as the years go by it gets worse and worse , family came to visit they wanted Venus so we get it and it was DISGUSTING the dough seemed raw top burnt black so it was waste of money, On top of that I place the order and got 4 pizzas and salad and i asked for price and never got I could hear the order taker ask someone name John and he screams idk around 42$ so I ask how long 20 min so I get there end up waiting 30 more min so total 50 min for DISGUSTING PIZZA !!!! This place is somewhat of a hidden gem. You wouldn't know by looking at it, but it has the best pizza in the South Shore, hands down, bar none. I honestly could not care less that the interior is a little scuffed around the edges, so long as they continue to prepare and serve their pizzas. I've never experienced a rude server (although I have been kept waiting to pick up a delivery once, but I assume it's because the place is so popular and it was a Saturday night?) and if I were being honest with myself and not trying to give this place the overall average rating it deserves I'd probably dock a star for the shabby interior, but their pizza honestly makes up for it in the long run. This is my favorite pizza around. The restaurant itself is kind of a dive and could use updating, but the food is delicious. I enjoy that they have pizza toppings you can't find anywhere else: pickles, baked beans, mozzarella sticks. The dessert pizza is also pretty amazing. I used to LOVE this pizza, wouldn't have anything else. Now, I don't go back there at all. Think they've gone down hill over the years. The pizza's are just "thrown" together, and you can barely recognize the meat they claim they put on it, and charge you extra for it. I've thought this way for a couple of years now, and hadn't tried Venus pizza in probably 6 or 7 years. I decided to give it another try a few weeks ago, and as in prior years, was very disappointed. Venus Cafe has always had the best pizza, I've been going there my entire life. The pizza has gone down hill, but is still pretty delicious. That being said, I HATE going here. We usually go when we want a cheap meal, but after several terrible experiences, I doubt we'll go back. The wait staff is somewhat rude. But worse than that, is the time it takes anything to happen. The most recent time we went, it took 25 minutes for our order to be taken, over 45 to get the pizza, and another 40 to get the bill. As if that wasn't infuriating enough, every employee, INCLUDING the cook, is shooting the breeze behind the bar and in the kitchen as if there weren't any customers at all. Take out is no better. Listen, this place is a classic South Shore pizza dive. Great pizza, old out dated dump that hasnt been updated since the 70s. You know what you are getting into as soon as you walk in the door. Drink bottled beer and order the pizza, dont use the forks and knives and you'll be ok. The bathroom looks like something you would see in highway gas station. Most people do take out here and I can see why. Its not the decor, its the passive aggressive wretch of a bartender thats always there. Walked in there on a Sunday (football season going on) one person sitting at the bar. Got an attitude ordering beers while we waited for our take out order, ask her to check on our take out got an attitude. The waitress watching all this smirked and rolled her eyes like "you dont have to tell me". That place should be packed on a Sunday during football season. Not with this blister running the show. I'm wondering if shes the owners wife or something, that would explain it. But if they would like to increase inhouse business they should get rid of her ASAP. i have been going there since i was a kid in the 70's & the pizza was always awesome! but in the last few years it seems like you never know what you are gonna get w/the pizza,1 day it is perfectly cooked w/a crispy crust & another day it is basicly a doughy bowl of tomato soup,yuck! the greek salad is still great w/the best dressing around. went in there the other day & the pizza was just ok but way to pricey,26 bucks for 2 pizzas & a salad,come on!!! if you are going to charge so much @ least put some money back into the business like kitchen renovations & updating the place. read more
