Mexi-Cali Shrimp & Fish n' Chips combo plate with chips and Queso Blanco

After a Texas Tech football game what better place to go than Velvet Taco! This location has a good amount of parking, but like other Velvet Taco locations, the seating area is limited. The staff was super nice and the seating area inside and out was packed! They consistently have great tacos and I'd definitely recommend them!

Tried again for the 2nd time and hoping that the "third time would be the charm" ... unfortunately, no, it wasn't. Again- the choices are AWESOME, and the food, has so many HIGH-points, BUT- it's the detail/attention on the preparation that keeps crushing the experience. So- chips and queso- good Rice- not bad (cilantro rice is loaded with butter so it's hard to really taste the rice/cilantro) Tacos- COULDDDDDD be amazing.... But each time, my order is taken, the only thing that is done correctly is the lettuce wrap Both tacos- asked for NO SAUCE- NO DRESSING and NO AVOCADO ... and guess what??? Both loaded with mayo/mixed sauces, and diced avocado. The flavor of the tacos are literally LOST under this mayonnaise sauce fest. (as for the avocado, just picked it all off) Hoping if we go back, the kitchen will abide by the ticket (yep, the guy at the register was awesome and had it listed... just wasn't paid attention to in the back).

#1 Buffalo Chicken & chicken avocado (lettuce wrap)

Was in search of a quick stop along a road trip and this place looked like the only one with fresh ingredients in Lubbock that had some diversity in the food options besides Tex-mex, burgers or pizza... Near a university and parking was easy. Drive thru available. Customer service from the man working was friendly and helpful! Tacos were bigger than an average street taco in California which was a nice surprise! All ingredients tasted fresh and good quality. Buffalo chicken- topped with shredded carrots. Mine was made perfectly but if there was even just a touch more sauce it would not be good. I enjoyed this and would eat again if made correctly with right proportions of chicken/sauce and carrots. Avocado chicken- this is wrapped with lettuce and not a tortilla. I liked it but would explore others next time. A nice healthier option though. Tater tots with local egg- the goat cheese in this was super good! Decent size serving that could be shared between 2 people. Tater totes were nice and crispy and held up decently well as leftovers. Red velvet cake- always a fan of red velvet cake and this one did not disappoint. Definitely a good value for the price as the piece we got was huge and shareable! Came with some sauce which I didn't bother eating. First time visiting one of these chain restaurants and would return! Lots of seating available in this small space with some table seating and stool seating. Restroom available. I like how there are paper towel napkins available easily.

This place is awesome. I ordered 5 tacos because I wanted to try some different ones. Big fan, lots of options on the menu so I imagine there's something for everyone. The staff member behind the counter was friendly, service was fast and the restaurant was super clean.

The Ticka plate combining Mexican and Indian food!

Velvet Taco does has some flavorful food! If you like tacos and or bowls, this is your place! They are not your traditional tacos. They are artisan tacos that pack lots of flavors! We ordered the Ticka Spicy bowl and their regular bowl which is really good! Also their nachos was not listed on menu but they still sell nacho plates! The nachos has to be some of the best nachos in town! There are all sorts of ingredients in those nachos that make it so darn good! They also have affordable adult drinks! I also like that they have different bottled Jarritos to wash that food down!

Beer Battered Cauliflower and the Shrimp and Grits - Take-out
    Cissy W.

We ordered takeout which was super easy. I had the Shrimp and Grits Taco and the Beer Battered Cauliflower Taco. Both were great! But that cauliflower was really good - queso blanco, Texas Pete® sabor sauce, avocado corn pico, dusted candied pepitas, flour tortilla. Shrimp was good too, cooked well, very tender shrimp! Serving size of two is about right for dinner for me. Can't wait to go back and try some of the other interesting choices!

Tots and Red Curry Coconut Queso were both great

My wife & I were looking to catch a bite on the way to our hotel after a midnight musical at McKenzie park. It was a quiet summer Saturday night here, very clean lobby and we were the only patrons. Super friendly and helpful servers. The red curry coconut queso was outstanding (ask for more pickled onions). My favorite item was the Tots- they were perfectly crisp, hot, with just the right mount of cheese and avocado crema (ask for more). The fried egg was nice & oozy. Tacos: we had 2 - #8 Korean Fried Rice taco's pineapple, onion, chile aioli, & cilantro melded perfectly; lots of flavors. The #14 Shrimp & Grits was my favorite with it's creamy remoulade & crispy grits. Both tacos had a perfectly seared and crispy slight crunch to the softness of the flour tortilla. The house margaritas on the rocks were surprisingly flavorful. And the red velvet cake went well with our breakfast coffee the following morning... They are a little more $$ than the other taco chains, but the uniqueness and quality of the items makes it worth the cost.

The food was great and the service was excellent. Well worth the price and a great atmosphere. We loved it!

    Brisket Nachos
    Kurt H.

Great street taco food in a compact restaurant. Menu has many good choices but it took a while to focus on where to start. This was my 1st visit and I was hungry when arriving. The line was only two customers in front of me was fine and weary quick. I settled on the "Brisket Nachos" with a side of guacamole (very small) along with two tacos and a "Red Velvet cake" to go. I grabbed a tall boy "Shiner Bock" to wash it down and paid close to $30 bucks. Ouch! Nachos were yummy and I would order them again. My "Fish N Chips" taco wasn't bad but I'll try something different next time. The 2nd taco was "Rotisserie Chicken" and again nothing special. The staff at the counter was friendly and helpful but forgot my cake to go, so I had to ask for it before leaving. I'll go back, try something different and say go try this place!

So many times in college, I would stop by Jimenez mid-day for my fix of their Three Amigos plate: Asado de Puerco, Carne Guisada, & Picadillo. Served with a fair helping of chips and salsa, it was a perfect lunch. Their tacos made them one of the best spots in Lubbock. Their placement in the Top 50 Taco Joints in Texas by Texas Monthly is well deserved. On Saturday, the game changes as they serve a Texas Monthly recognized barbecue. Their brisket is delectable, their sausage has a perfect kick, and all their sides are delightful. One of their delights is the La Tia. A barbecue sandwich except it's served on a house-made concha. Holy smokes. It's sugary and if served with brisket, is a glorious creation. I was driving through Lubbock and had to make a stop when I found out they were serving barbecue on a Friday. I got their Brisket Specialty Taco: two corn tacos with beans, shredded cheese, fried egg, and, of course, brisket. In addition, because my greed has no bounds, I got their Philthy Taco: 2 corn tacos, fried egg, potatoes, salsa ranchero, queso, and their smoked barbacoa. I called ahead and ordered before they closed at 2 pm and picked them up right at 1:57 pm (praise the lord). I mowed down both of them. For two tacos, they are most filling. I would've been full off of one. I am still wowed by what they can whip up. It's to-go only as Jimenez runs a small little shop on 34th Street, but they pack it with a ton of love and might. They're some of the best people in Lubbock, and Lubbock gives them all the love back. They just simply don't miss. RIYL: Mexican pastries, tacos, and barbecue

My first time I went, my group of guys and I were put in a room with all the other white people. Not to say they were profiling, but looking at the rest of the restaurant's population on a busy Sunday, they had us in the gringo room. The food hit. I get putting a bunch of three-taco-plate-and-queso people in one room. I have not been back in quite a while, but I remember their menu being the most behemoth-looking thing ever. Every item had a picture taken on a Coolpix camera, and the text was almost impossible to read on the menu's busy background. That is proof that the food was going to hit. After returning, the menu has been minimized to be more readable, only slightly keeping that same over-the-top flair. The prices have gone up slightly, but where have they not? On a Thursday night, we were seated immediately around 7:30 and had a pretty attentive waitress. Like every good Tex-Mex joint in Texas, their chips and salsa roam freely through the restaurant, and the salsa has a good kick that is easy to manage while still having the heat everyone wants. They also have a creamy green sauce and other sauces they bring out by request. I ordered a combination plate with a crispy beef taco, a beef burrito, and a chicken enchilada with a side of Mexican rice. I added a side of refried beans because no Tex-Mex meal is complete without a big serving of refried beans to mix with the rice and crush with tortilla chips. The crispy taco was unreal. The shell feels like it was double-fried. It has such an incredible hardness to it. It feels premium. The beef burrito and enchilada were great as well, but I was blown away by the taco to an extreme. They have a pretty broad selection of Mexican beers, including Tecate, Bohemia, Dos Equis Amber, Modelo Negra, and Victoria next to your Coronas, Sol, and Dos Equis. Their margaritas are pretty great, if my memory serves me right, as well. I love this place, and I was glad to give it a revisit while being back in Lubbock for a bit. It is just classic and timeless. I just wish their menu was as much of an eyesore as it used to be because that sucker brought me so much joy. RIYL: Gaining five pounds in an hour. A good meal.

The restaurant is large and has plenty of seating. We were seated quickly on a Friday evening. Like most mexican, tex-mex restaurant, we were given chips and salsa to start. I feel like I'm not usually picky with something so simple. However, the chips didn't seem to have enough flavor. I felt like it could have used more salt. The salsa also tasted a bit off. Specifically, it tasted more sour than I would have liked. I ordered a bistec plate (not sure what it was specifically as I'm writing this a few weeks from my original visit). There was sauteed beef with onions, peppers, mushrooms, and bacon. It was delicious! Everything was flavored nicely. Went great inside the warm flour tortillas that were provided. The sides of mexican rice and pinto beans were good as well. Aside from the food, the service was great. Attentive and kind. I still wish I could have paid for this meal, especially now in retrospect. My Lubbock host was too quick and went ahead and paid for the two of us. As we left, there was something wrong with the doors on the way out. I don't remember that being an issue as we came in. One of the sets of doors just seemed to jam. It was probably just me though (it was). Overall, I'd recommend this place! Maybe it was an off day for the chips and salsa. Otherwise, everything was great.
