I am not sure where to start with this review -- I have been to most restaurants on the Jamaica Plain strip, but I was absolutely FLOORED by Vee Vee. I visited this past weekend with my partner and sister for a birthday. Reservations were easy to get -- try OpenTable! The restaurant was very warm and welcoming, my first impression was "cozy". The service was really good, our server was super helpful in explaining the menu and pointing out the specials for the evening. To start, we got the olives and the cucumber salad. Both were really well done, the seasoning on the peanuts that came with the olives was amazing. Perfect amount of appetizer for three people. I ordered the steak frites, and my fellow diners got the Cod and the Gorditas. The steak frites were super flavorful, but the highlight of the dish was the fries. Coupled with the aioli, the fries were a huge hit at our table (you have to order them!). The cod was also really well done, when I come back I will definitely order the cod. We grabbed the butterscotch pudding and chocolate cake for dessert. The cake was super moist and the perfect consistency. Two desserts was perfect for three people. I was looking for a place in JP with gluten-free options and Vee Vee more than delivered. The inside seemed cozy but we went with a table in their "secret" patio, which is right around the corner and nicely decked out (I applaud restaurants' efforts to convert parking lots into feasible outdoor options at the height of the pandemic). Advise making reservations on the weekend and Thursday-Friday. The menu's pretty limited but that's not a ding in my book if the restaurant can ace the handful of dishes offered (better than a wide spread of mediocre options). I went with the chicken dish. Chicken breast, whenever I cook it at home, always turns into a dry, tough slab, so as it happens, that's usually a restaurant dish that catches my eye. This one was cooked beautifully, with a nice, crispy skin, and I loved the potato gnocchi as a side. Was it mind-blowing, though? I will say, for a chicken dish, the price tag of $31 was fancy steakhouse-level steep. Everyone's reeling from inflation these days but my wallet definitely felt a pinch. That said, the dish was cooked with attention and care. Our waiter made sure to offer suggestions and refill our water glasses. For parking, there's a municipal lot right behind the row of restaurants with lots of 2-hour spaces and free after 6pm. read more

We enjoyed a beautiful night out in Boston and ended up eating at Vee Vee (luckily) as walk-ins. They gave us a seat by the door, which was appreciated and the service to the food was hitting on all marks. The one thing I hold back from giving a 5 star review on is that we were dying of heat -- it felt like we were eating in a sauna. I'm not sure if it was because they didn't turn on the AC or if we just had an unfortunate seat that wasn't receiving any of that cool air. I don't know why this place doesn't have 4.8 stars. Arguably the best restaurant in JP. We got the fried steak appetizer. Unreal amazing sauce and great flavor/texture of the meat. Next was the char grilled cabbage. Different but a winner. We had a similar dish at Tres Gatos a few weeks ago and this one was a lot better flavor and better cooked. Finally we had the red curry snapper. This was pronominal!! They update the menu regularly so we're going to make the effort to come back more than once every 6 months. Only complaint is that all the sauces with the dishes are reallllly good but they don't have any bread to mop it up. We did lick most of the plates clean. ‍‍ Thank you Vee Vee!! read more

I really wanted to love this place and was excited about the rebrand but I was left so disappointed. I was excited to try the shrimp ceviche but sadly it was out of stock. So I ordered the shrimp tostada instead, which I was sad to see was not another raw dish as this was not made clear. Regardless it was fine, didn't stand out but good size for the price. However the real disappointment was the birria tacos which were completely flavorless. I was really shocked by this as birria is typically very flavorful but I had to take this to go and re-season at home. In addition the consumer was very oily as well. I was sat at the bar and service was great. The patio is really nice and I look forward to trying again, hopefully with better luck. read more

Stopped in on a whim because I saw Chef Valentine through the window (Top Chef stan), and I had the best solo date. The ambience is so cozy and warm. I had a glass of wine with the shrimp ceviche--it was great! The plating was beautiful and the portions generous. Food came out quickly and staff was friendly. I recently came here after a menu revamp, for Black Cat @ Vee Vee. EXCELLENT meal. My friend and I split several dishes: red snapper crudo, wingz (with the red stripe and magnum bbq sauce), the fried rice, the beef empanada, and two tacos (al pastor and pollo). The tacos were pretty good (flavorful and lots of filling nestled in a double tortilla), but everything else was outstanding. I think our favorite might have been the fried rice, which is saying a lot coming from two Chinese girls. The bbq sauce on the wingz was addictive, and the crudo was fresh and just the right amount of heat from the pepper. The empanada was crisp and light on the inside with juicy beef on the inside and the two sauces it came with were perfect. We couldn't decide between two of the desserts so we got both. The soursop ice cream was so creamy and not too sweet, but the bruñuelo was (to me) the star of the meal. I thought it would be dense since I think it's made of plantains but it was sooooo airy and crispy and the sauce on top was *chefs kiss*. I am literally planning my next visit to try the other half of the menu, including more of their vegetarian options! read more

Picked this restaurant on a whim since people seemed to like it and BOY am I glad we did. My siblings and I spent half of the time just taking bites and staring at each other with wide eyes because everything was so mindblowingly good. We ended up using a spoon to devour every last bit of the sauces that came with the yuca dish. Our favorites were the yuca, the aguachile steak, and the shrimp ceviche. Plus, an honorable mention to the butterscotch pudding! Portion sizes are definitely respectable and we ended up only getting 4 dishes (+ dessert) for the 3 of us and being full. However, I wish I had a second stomach so I could devour more. Our server, Ella, was so wonderful and helped us pick some incredible dishes! Overall, service was amazing and it was quiet, cozy, and friendly. This is probably one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in all of Boston now! If I could give Vee Vee 10 stars, I would! We've been going here for over 10 years and I've never had a bad meal. They are amazingly consistent. The service is always warm and the food is always creative, seasonal, and amazingly executed! Don't miss this hidden gem! It's my #1 in Boston and I've lived here for over 20 years! Some highlights: THE chicken: I never order chicken, let alone breast except at Vee Vee, where it is my favorite. It is often served with Gnocchi, but beyond that the dish varies a lot so there is always something to look forward to. What doesn't vary is the absolutely perfect execution, texture and flavor. Think perfectly juicy yet with crisp skin. The drinks: they always have interesting options for beer, wine and even sake often local... yup sake made in MA. You think I'm crazy but it was wonderful! Was excited to try the new menu but was disappointed by the whole experience. We felt rushed by the server and timing of dishes even though it wasn't busy. The food came out so quickly it had me wondering if dishes are premade and waiting to go out rather than being prepared for us specifically. This hunch was reinforced by the temperature at which the food was delivered. Empanadas were cold inside and scallops sat on lukewarm polenta, which we almost sent back. Tha patio is beautiful and pleasant. The kitchen was very slow even though there were some empty tables. We sat for a long time with our cocktails and nothing to eat. No bread , crackers or nibbles are served. Fried oysters when finally served were only warm and had lost there crunch. Steak was well cooked as ordered but plate was overwhelmed with Parmesan cheese. Pork shoulder entree was delicious. So I would rate food as inconsistent. Wine was served in plastic glass and request for real wineglass was refused. Stopped in for an impromptu date night after confirming that they had both vegan and vegetarian entrée options. The fried mushroom appetizer (vegan but in a shared fryer) was DELICIOUS. I will always order marinated olives anytime I see them on a menu, and they were great as well. The vegan entrée was gorditas - probably the best vegan entree I've had in a long time. Went there on New Year's Eve and the first surprise was a $72 prix fixe menu -- my bad missed that. Next reviews talked about Vee Vee being vegetarian or vegan. They do have some vegetarian courses but its a side light. Takes nothing away from the food but a data point. Wonderful meat and seafood dishes. We settled in and my friend had Lobster Stew, and I have the Stuffed Mushrooms; both totally yummy. For the second course, she had the Sole and I had the gnocchi. She devoured the Sole and the gnocchi was quite light and pillowy. They were accompanied by Brussel sprouts that were maybe seared but mostly raw. Where we got off course, pun intended was dessert. We ordered the chocolate torte and the gingerbread bowl. The torte was fairly bland and non-descript. The worst offender was the gingerbread bowl. There was a very nice custard in the bowl but it was overwhelmed by the gingerbread. The gingerbread we tried to eat it was cute but not edible. Beyond the food, the service was excellent. The wine was lovely and well suited the food. Do know this is an expensive restaurant to eat in Boston or even New York. Would I come back, yes I would but pay closer attention to the menu before I made the reservation. read more

Very small restaurant with about 8 tables only. The reason I am giving five stars is the fantastic service we had. Very professional and kind servers. Great JP dinner spot. I liked the vibe in here, its small but I didn't have to wait at all (I went by myself so it was easy to seat me!). The vibe in here felt like a weird mix of being divey and upscale, which I thought was interesting. My favorite part of my meal was dessert, I had their special lemon cake and it was fantastic! I think that was seasonal, but either way, my next visit I will be having dessert. The fried shitake mushroom with dipping sauce were also pretty great and actually filling. I didn't think I was going to even touch my entree after eating them. I also couldn't stop myself from eathing them! Their service was pretty fast and the staff was very friendly. The food was unimpressive--unconfident--dry here, too much grease on another, a number of too sauced up items. Steak in particular was overcooked, not medium well. I made a reservation here for M and my first date night out since Covid started. They created a little gravel patio behind the restaurant that's super cute and small but still with space between the tables. For being in a pandemic, this felt very safe. You walk around to the back to enter rather than going through the indoor restaurant so you can stay outside the whole time. Everyone wears masks except when seated at their table. I felt like there was plenty of space between the tables. You do have access to go inside to use the bathroom if you need to though. Drinks are beer and wine only but they had some good options. Ask your waiter if nothing catches your eye because they did have a few extra beers that weren't on the menu. We started with the potato croquettes which were absolutely amazeballs. Awesome flavor, perfect texture and crunch, and served on an awesome red sauce. Definitely the stand out. M and I both got the seared tuna for dinner because we're boring and have scarily similar taste. It was excellent if a tad over salted. Great sear but still nice and raw in the middle. It came with asparagus and potatoes that were delicious but positively swimming in butter so maybe not the healthiest dinner if you're counting calories. We wrapped up with a frozen peach dessert that was light and refreshing for summer. A good ending to a very good meal. Prices were reasonable but not cheap. I think we were ~$130 all in with tax and tip. We'll keep Vee Vee in mind for future date nights even if it won't become a super regular haunt. read more

Vee Vee is right down the street from us. For many years, we'd try to find a new restaurant in Boston and Cambridge for each special occasion, with the goal of never repeating ourselves. But let's be honest: the restaurant business is hard here. Margins are thin; overhead is high. So many restaurants play it safe with their menus as a result, with mediocre results. Vee Vee is consistently of top notch caliber. My husband and I recently decided, why risk our discretionary income on new places when we know we'll inevitably have an excellent time at Vee Vee: amazingly prepared food, in a relaxing, plant-filled ambience, served by the most professional and warmly welcoming staff. Consistently. We've dined there four times in the last four months, each on different nights, and it was just as good every time. You know a place is expertly run (kudos, Kristen, Dan and Keith!) when you get the same high quality experience repeatedly. My personal favorites: Tuesday-only fried chicken, crispy shiitake mushroom app, and their current duck and cod specials are all to die for. And their desserts equally impress. You cannot go wrong with Vee Vee. Hard to believe they've been in business for 15 years, because they're still bringing their A game, when so many restaurants stop trying after 5. Went to check out the new patio at Vee Vee last night with my family. They left good instructions on how to find it (you can't enter through the main restaurant) and we enjoyed our dinner al fresco. The food was good as well - I recommend getting a few things to share with the table! We tried the shrimp/scallop cakes (very yum), the ribs (spicy and also yum), the potato croquettes (delish) and their especial of the day, an heirloom tomato salad (I think my fave of the night). Since we shared smaller bites we all had room for dessert. Get the butterscotch pudding! The waiter shared that the owner makes it himself!
