We all studied the menu for a long time, it was hard to pick. This place does Dominican staples well. Whether you're dining in or getting take out/delivery, the food is fresh, well seasoned and cooked and portions are big. The price may seem a bit steep for Dominican food but the portions really do justify the prices. 3 stars because the yuca and tostones did not come with the picadera as advertised and based on other reviews this is a common mistake. The quality of the rice they use is also not great, you can't tell if you get the Moro or chofan but absolutely noticeable if you order the plain, white rice. Overall this is a safe option if you're in the area and craving Dominican food. read more

I am very familiar with Caribbean food specially Dominican food. The food here was very well done, tasty, and well seasoned. This is the kind of food that you would eat at home if you grew up in Dominican households. Uber Uber Eats Date of transaction: 06/06/2024 Amount paid: $45.21 Merengue Restaurant I ordered food from this restaurant to be delivered. Due to an inaccurate delivery address I had to cancel the order. I then called the restaurant to pick up the order & they told me they would charge me AGAIN for my order upon pickup. That would be $90 double the price for a $45 order. I spoke to Uber eats that stated they needed to charge me for the order to reimburse the restaurant. Neither party was willing to accommodate me. Merengue a greedy business wanted to charge me again for food that I already paid for & they were still in the process of making. Uber eats wouldn't allow me to one, change the drop off address considering my order was still being "prepared" & no driver was in route. Mind you the new address was in the same city as the restaurant as opposed to the incorrect address... They were also unwilling to just send a driver to complete the delivery seeing as one hadn't been sent out yet to pickup my food as the order was still in the works. I'm beyond disgusted with money hungry merengue as well as Uber eats unwillingness to complete my delivery. I was offered a $15 credit on a $45 order... I've spent thousands of dollars with this company. I just canceled my membership with them due to this absurdity... All I needed was a new driver to deliver my order and they refused to accommodate... I really enjoy the food at Merengue! Their customer service is HORRIBLE!!! Every time I call to place an order that takes 30-40 minutes to cook, I'm placed on hold for eternity. I end up getting to the restaurant to find four or five hostess standing around talking. Rude! This has happened repeatedly. This place always gets my order wrong or misses something. Every time I ask to speak to a manager, there is never one available nor on duty. I usually order through DoorDash and only order foods which only include chicken. Due to religious beliefs and medical conditions I do not eat pork. Somehow I always receive pork and trusting them I don't realize until I've had several bites. There is a problem on their selections that need to be corrected. Third time this happened. My experience with Dominican food is limited, but this restaurant has become one of my favorites! The pork especially has this wonderful savory flavor that I've never tasted anywhere else. I happened to be town searching for some good island food and stumbled upon this place on yelp. Immediately entering the place I smelt the aromas and knew I was in for a treat. For the food we ordered the whole fried snapper with sweet plantains. This entire dish was so good. You can tell they took their time with making sure the fish was seasoned to perfection. I actually ordered one to go. We also had the seafood combination cooked in creole sauce. The flavor of the creole sauce was delishious. However ALL the seafood in this dish tasted like rubber. " Bertha" comes over and impatiently ( as always) asks what we want. We tell her and the food arrives maybe 35-40 min later. My food was disgusting. Tasted like dirt. The seafood paella here hasn't been the same for over a year. I take two bites and ask her to wrap it up for me. My friend said her food had a "lingering" dirt flavor as well. Eeww My piña colada was good btw and the sangria here is decent as well. It takes this rude waitress 35 minutes to give us our bill after she wrapped up half of my order. I wanted my beans for the dry azz rice!!! A group that was seated next to us was arguing about the same waitress (Bertha), the overpriced, terrible food and the slow service. I didn't tip her, but my credit card receipt appears to have an additional $6.00 charge with my meal. The next day, I attempt to have my leftovers. The lobster tasted like ground and I noticed a hard, bluish-gray creature pinching the end of the lobster tail. *see picture posted THIS used to be my favorite spot in the hood to come to, for many for years. It probably won't fill you up by itself, but order it with an app and you'll have a meal. - king fish: this was a meaty, fried fish. It wasn't light, but filling. You get to choose a sauce; I chose the garlic sauce, which I liked, but next time I'll be more adventurous. - sweet plantains: I definitely recommend - you won't be disappointed. My friend and I ordered two plates and I was only given my meat. I was missing cassava and plantains. I called the restaurant and they said to cancel the Uber order. I explained ,"I don't want to cancel and that I already had a portion of my order and wanted the rest to be delivered or give me compensation",The restaurant insisted they were unable to do so because they were soon closing up around 8:45 pm and they I should cancel the Uber order. I suggested I should not do that but they insisted. Once this ordered was canceled, I was charged more for canceling and then reimbursed only three dollars more from what I was charged in a cancelation fee. The menu offers a wide range of interesting Spanish/Caribbean dishes, specifically Puerto Rican. My food was outstanding I basically ordered three meals. I highly recommend their fish and their plantains. I give them four stars because I, a vegan, was given a drink with milk in it, even though I asked for no milk, and I became extremely sick after. Even when I lived out of state, I would come home and head to Merengue for delicious Dominican food. I'm not sure what has happened over the past couple of years, but Merengue went from delicious to garbage. It's awful. The food and the service are lacking. Merengue used to be a hidden gem where the dining experience was comforting. No more. They have gone down the toilet and don't care about it. They should be embarrassed by the food that is coming out of the kitchen. The meats were beyond dry. They lacked flavor. The yucca was like chewing on cardboard. The barely mashed the mofongo. The steak and onions came with almost raw onions. How lazy is their chef that they couldn't properly grill onions??!! Wow!!! They ran out of cheese. No fried cheese. They ran out of the beef in the bisteca platter. The excuse was that they only get deliveries on Monday so by the weekend some dishes are unavailable. That's what I call POOR PLANNING. If you can't manage inventory, then you can't manage a business. Horrible. Shall we talk about the LAZY INATTENTIVE STAFF??! I'm appalled by how careless they were during my visit. So many mistakes and they were so blasé about it. They really did not care. It must be nice to go to work, be awful at what you do, and still have job. Merengue takes reservations, and they save a specific table for you with one of those little "Reserved" signs, so it is pretty official. The restaurant is actually pretty good sized with two dining areas set next to each other, and another function room in the back that you pass on the way to the restroom. To start with, we ordered the small Picadera Merengue (Sampler Platter with Combination of Fried Meat, Green Plantains and Cassava) $12 and opted for the Con Queso Frito (With Fried Cheese) option for an additional $2.00. The portion was huge for two. Even for three. The two of us ate less than half of the variety of foods, although we noticed two men at a neighboring table completely demolishing theirs. The fried chicken was meaty crisp. I couldn't really tell the beef apart from the pork - probably the lighting didn't help. The green plantains were okay, but I mostly enjoyed the crisp crusted cassava that masqueraded as breaded mozzarella sticks, and the chewy wrinkly chunks of fried cheese. Since we were planning on sharing the meal family style, I asked the waitress for her recommendations for a seafood item and a meat item, and I went with them. We ordered the Combinación de Mariscos al Gusto** (Seafood Combination with Lobster, Shrimps, Calamari, Octopus & Mussels) $19 with Spanish rice as its side, and the Pechuga de Pollo Rellena de Camarones en Salsa Criolla (Chicken Breast Filled with Shrimps in Creole Sauce) $16 with steamed vegetables, for a bit of something healthy. I wasn't impressed with the chicken dish. The portion was rather small and the protein rather dry. The veggies were acceptable, however, and I discovered an entire lobster tail in the seafood entree, but the impressiveness of that fact was lost once I realized how rubbery it was. The shrimp was also overcooked, but I really liked the coconut sauce that we had opted for over the Creole sauce, and enjoyed it scooped over the Spanish rice. We finished our night with an order of the Tres Leches $3.50, which was a sweet, moist treat. The servers played a bit of tag team here, so tables were quickly cleared, but the soda and later the bill took a while, so our main waitress thanked us for our patience several times through the night. She informed us at one point that they filter their water here (I liked that!) and that they don't have iced tea even though it is printed on the menu. Live music plays in the inner room beginning at 8pm on Saturdays for 2 hours. It gets pretty loud, so it gets tough to have a decent conversation. 3.5 stars read more
