I went today on the recommendation from a fellow co worker who is from Trinidad. I had never had a double before and got a chicken veggie and beef. All were amazing so flavorful For the roti I ordered a chicken roti and beef roti. Telling the woman it was my first time here and I took tbe bus and t from Quincy she was nice enough to also give me a complimentary piece of what looks like red velvet coconut cake. Which I will be having for dessert. For a very small place the food is amazing. If you are a true Trini this place will feel like home. From the aroma that greets you before you open the door to the lovely little Indian granny behind the counter this is authentic. I had to stop myself from spending all of my money but when you walk in on a Saturday and there is corn soup c'mon. I had doubles, aloo pie, pholourie, and the dahlpuri **muah** exactly as it should be. Curry pumpkin, channa, and mango chutney. People rave about a roti shop here in Boston that I have never been a fan of with their dry roti skins and poor customer service but they cannot compare to D Coal Pot. Wait! Did I mention that they had curry crab and dumpling. Lord it was delicious my daughter and I were in heaven. Great small Trinidadian cuisine located in hyde park,MA. The atmosphere is so inviting from the outside and the inside. It is a small place, with a homey touch to it. There's limited outside seating in the summer but as you can imagine, during the cold season, nobody really likes to sit outside lol. I was first introduced to this place last year by one of my Trini co-workers and got in contact with the owner to place a catering order for a work event. We ordered buss up shut, curry chicken, and chana and aloo. Everything came out so delicious and full of flavor. The team enjoyed the food and asked for another catering event and so I placed an order for the same dishes and the owner Allan, worked with our budget. Allan is very friendly and accommodating. Everything was done on time and when I arrived to pick up the order, Allan and his teams helped bring everything to my car. The chana and aloo and the buss up shot are vegan friendly :) I recommend this place! (10/10) read more

The food is amazing. Everything was delicious. On top of that, the service is A1. They are so authentically friendly and made me feel like they wanted to feed me. They threw in samples of some of the items I asked about but wasn't sure about ordering. Whenever I'm near here, I order. Dave provided excellent food and service at a reasonable cost for party trays at a recent event for my family in Boston. I have ate here so many times. (Probably like 4 days in a row when it has been bad) This is the first time reviewing this place. That's a shame. However they food is really good. Authentic Trinidad food. They have the typical offers during the week, Roti, doubles, lunch plates, bake and salt fish , beef patties. However now I come on Friday and/or Saturday. On Friday, I call for their Shrimp Buss up shot, it's my favorite thing they make hands down. They make their curry shrimp fresh, literally one time they took the uncooked shrimp from the fridge and since shrimp cook time is short they made it right then, it was some of the best shrimp I had anywhere. I get potato, chickpea, pumpkin and cabbage with the buss up shot. Saturday is their busiest day and a day when they cook up specials , shark and bake, curry duck, crab etc. Their doubles are really good and their rotis are solid. My recommendation however will be to get a buss up shot. And ask for their shrimp! Chicken is okay. Their beef is good. But shrimp is amazing read more

What a great experience! We're rarely in this area and Caribbean isn't something we eat often or know very well, but we were driving by and decided to check it out. The staff (and other customers) were super friendly and patient and happy to explain our options and make recommendations. We had a couple of doubles, a shark one and a shrimp one with pumpkin. They also gave us a sample of some soup since we were so enthusiastic and curious. The outdoor seating was great. I'm looking forward to returning. read more

Used to live in Hyde Park and always passed by this place and was surprised that it's been open all these years. Finally took the chance to pick up some food from here for dinner and thought it was okay. The items I would recommend are the beef roti and the doubles, but the rest of the food (salt fish bake, fried rice) was a little bland/under-seasoned. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt because I came half an hour before closing time, but they also don't have as much from their menu because they're under new ownership (and apparently certain items on their menu are seasonal). I'll give them a few more visits to try their other menu items, and since the worker behind the counter was very friendly :) read more

Both of my parents are from Trinidad - so I never had a shortage of good trini food. Dave and his establishment are so welcoming. Truly great people. I always have a good meal, definitely the best Caribbean food in Boston. Unfortunately, my Boston standards are not the same as my Florida and Trinidad standards - but this is good for Boston. While their doubles and "street-food" staples are good, I actually love their traditional meals even more. The soups, crab and dumpling, desserts (pone/karuma) really hit the spot for me. Just left here had some Roti it was amazing!! I got squash, callaloo , chick peas and curry chicken. My gf is from Trinidad so I know what I'm talking about when I say this food is the bomb!! I ordered their cow foot soup and it had a scorched flavor like the bottom of the pot was burnt so sorry to say the taste was awful. You could smell the burnt before you even open the soup not very happy with it. If you are not a fan of cilantro like me, then I'd just warn be careful because there is tons of it in the soup. Five stars! Not only is the food here delicious, but the service is top notch. The owner is a friendly neighborhood guy who always makes sure his patrons leave happy. I come here very often and have never been let down. The first time I tried D Coal Pot, I told them I'd never had Trini food before. They put together a plate for me that enabled to me get a taste of most of their menu. Now when I go in, I just order a little bit of everything because it is all so good! My favorite menu items here are the curry beef, cucumber slaw, the little fried doughs, pumpkin, and the delicious tamarind sauce. I love coming in here for a quick and easy take out meal at very FAIR PRICES! The location is accessible and welcoming, with their fun island decor. This is the first Yelp review I've been compelled to write, due to the quality of food and service I experienced when visiting D Coal Pot, and my personal hope that a 5-star review like this can help a great new spot succeed. I've driven 30+ miles on four occasions now and I've never been disappointed. My fiancee, who is Trini, wholeheartedly approves so I know it really is good. To start with the service, the manager is super friendly and a real fun guy - he's recognized us each time we have come back (sometimes a few months in between visits) and is always very personable. The rest of the staff was cool, too. Love the Soca they play as well. They seem to be very active with the Caribbean community in the greater Boston area, which is always nice. As for the food, definitely the best Trini food in New England. I've been to other restaurants in the area (Ali's Roti, Singh's) but this is definitely quite a few notches above. The only superior Trini cuisine I've had in America was down in Lauderhill, Florida at Joy's. The doubles have great flavor, and when you ask for plenty pepper you get the right amount of heat. I found these much better than Singh's and a little bit better than Ali's. The goat roti and pumpkin is phenomenal as well. The owner let me try some desserts as well (which I had never seen/heard of before). Not to mention the pahlourie is a great snack!! All goes down nice with a cold Ting or Solo soda to drink. Overall, best Trini cuisine in New England. Great, great service. Highly recommend. If you have never tried Trini food, you will LOVE the taste (just brace yourself for the spice!) Can't beat the low prices, either, for a meal that will certainly fill you up. Also, bonus points for the outdoor decor (you'll see what I mean when you visit). This place is great. Opened one year ago. Tasty Trinidadian food, including doubles and pholourie, which are made from the same batter as doubles but don't don't have anything inside. Like a Trinidadian doughnut hole. Lots of other substantial food as well -- goat stew, two kinds of fish -- and a menu that changes all the time. No real place to sit, this is for take-out.
