I visited here yesterday. The location was easy to find. Parking...weĺl, just like any urban neighborhood... good luck. I live in Connecticut and was treated like family. Honestly once you've gone to one Caribbean restaurant you've pretty much gone to them all but I have always heard good things about this place and I'm always on board for spending my dollar in black establishments so I visited here last night for the first time. The woman serving me was nice however in the middle of ringing me out she picked up the phone and began yelling. She hung up with the person and began ranting to me. She was cussing and getting herself all riled while hollering her woes to me..it was really off-putting. That's something you do with your girlfriends not your customers. My large plate had the serving size of chicken as a small plate would (mind you I paid $20+). And since it sat overnight I was expecting the flavors to be good however it had no taste! Another epic fail for Grub Hub, this time thanks to Island Style at 183 Washington St., Boston MA. My order of jerk pork arrived cold and without the promised sides of rice, vegetables and fried plantains. The routine Grub Hub refund was no consolation -- I'm hungry, recovering from brain surgery, and without a venicle.Had to order the missing items from Delicias in Jamaica Plain, which saved the day. While the food is good I must say that the woman and the gentleman working there have no manners, no courtesy and just don't know how to work with the public. They both were having a full blown conversation in the middle of my order and straight up ignored me until I made a face. I will never ever go back and I must say they give Jamaicans a bad rap because as far as I know they're some of the friendliest Caribbean people. Love this place. It's as close as I can get to my mothers food. It's reasonably priced for the quality of the meats. And is truly authentic Jamaican food. They also have my flag hanging up, which most West Indian restaurants usually don't. ( Bahamas ) My plate was $13 for a large oxtail, Rice & peas, and they didn't even charge me for the macaroni. They offer a variety of homemade juices and teas, cakes etc. Sometimes they do act funny if you're not West Indian ( I witnessed it with my own eyes ). They must've ran out of Beef Pattie's because instead of calling to replace them or not pack them at all and refund me, they decided to send me bread with cheese! Just coco bread and cheese, I'm beyond frustrated because they could've called me to see if I wanted to replace it with something else and they didn't. Certain parts of Boston have several Caribbean restaurants, but it can be a toss us to find good ones. This is one! The food came hot and fresh. One of the things I like most is that they offer dishes that aren't available at the other Jamaican restaurants like Mackerel dishes, and potatoes with onions. I've been to this restaurant plenty of times, but as of now I've dropped the stars on it. The food there is great, I would typically go there specifically for the beef & chicken patties (my main spot for Jamaican food)... But recently they've been really dry, hard, and drastically spicy. The spice used to be balanced out to assist the curry flavor, but now the spicyness overflows the taste... Just awful. Definitely no longer my choice of place to get patties, nor will I suggest it to any friend of mine. The breading is way too toasted -you can see dark brown burnt spots on the patties, they're mega dry so they don't taste anywhere near fresh... FYI, you'll have to swallow that patty down with water due to the dryness. The patties also split open from the dryness. If you're a Jamaican patty fan; this is not the place for you. Now the main reason why I might never go back to this place... The customer service for the first time was just beyond bad. I was the second client who walked into the restaurant, I stood in line, and several other clients came in after. The guy in register kept skipping me over and attended the people behind me... Like seriously? I was here first man. I could hear the guy behind me speaking Jamaican and looking at me. I'm not Jamaican nor do I understand it, but I did comprehend 2 words... F*cking, and White man. 1) are you kidding me? 2) I'm Spanish, and um extremely racist. After that, well I got the sense that I wasn't being attended to promptly because I'm not black or Jamaican or what ever. Mind you, after I got my patties... The food is alright, but I do think there is better Caribbean food in the area with better service. The Island Style staff have not been particularly friendly. The last time we went, it was loud in there and we couldn't hear what our server was saying. When we asked her if she could repeat herself, she snapped at us, "I wasn't talking to you." They had one of the best set of selections I've seen with stewed meats like chicken of course and a nice ox tail, but also, salmon and 3 more types of fish. The new, heavyweight, carribean lunch-spot champion. I just had the BEST jerk pork with cabbage and rice/beans on my lunch break... man oh man. The woman at the counter was a sweetheart and the chef was helpful in picking out a sauce that wasn't too spicy. The jerk gravy was sweet, and mellow, with a warm bite that sneeks up on the back of your mouth and puts tiny beads of sweat on your forehead. The price was VERY reasonable considering the weight of my takeout bag and the smile on my face right now. I ordered the "medium" and I'm stuffed to the gills, but I'll be ordering the large next time! Give this place a try for authentic island cooking and big smiles at the counter. The server was painfully slow and seemed to be distracted i felt i was an inconvenience instead of the reason they prepared the food.. Ive been here on several occasions because the food is decent especially the curried and jerk chicken plates. Unfortunately there is a double standard when it comes to the amount of food there is put in a plate. Ive stood on line where the food is gobbed on the prior customers plate...only to receive the remains of another selection..(not my preference). Place is a block away from my house. I usually crave akee and saltfish and because its near. This is where I go. I've had to wait for them to finishing cooking when they first open, the food is almost never ready for opening. Cowfoot soup is decent.
