The neon pig on top the building can be distracting. But the exceptional service and impecible food cannot! I read a lot about this place in the Yelp reviews. I knew I had to see for myself. If you are like me, I enjoy Italian, but Greek is a little out of the norm. I have attended the Greek festival in Houston during teh month of October. So I have experienced the culture. From the very first moment, I was greeted and seated. My waitress explained the specials and was ready to give me her personal recommendations as well when asked. This is a quaint place to take your significant other. I enjoyed the fresh salad with the special vinagrette. Feta cheese was spread on all items. Much of the food is made in house as was the meat balls that I ordered. I followed this with Taramisou. It was rich, creamy, and had a lightly coated coca chocolate topping. Simply the best! I was served water to begin. My tea class never was lower than half. Try this place. Expect great things because they will deliver! read more

Excellent dining experience. Definitely obtain reservations--even on a Wednesday. We got the last booth at 6:30pm by luck. Our superb waiter recommended it immediately upon arrival when the first 2 of our party arrived. The artichoke appetizer was divine; the greek platter with all 3 meats (gyro, chicken & pork souvlaki) was enough for 2; and the Greek dessert with lemon curd and filo dough was yummy! We love Vaso's kitchen - the food, the atmosphere and the convenient location. The only reason it didn't get a fifth star is a truth that we learned about the fish one night. They had as a special the same type of fish already on the menu, but when I tried to order the menu version, the server told me that the the special one was better because the one on the menu is not fresh fish - it is frozen. He actually implied that the fish on the menu wasn't very good. So, I get the fact that restaurants use frozen food, but I can't say that it helped to hear that out loud. And, I know that I will never order the fish from the menu - only if it is a special. read more

Husband and me came here before a movie on a Saturday night. We arrived around 6pm, and by 7 the place was packed. It's a very small restaurant. The food arrived promptly and everything was good. I had chicken souvlaki and my husband had stuffed flounder. Biggest complaint is for the prices, you get very little. For $10 I got about 5 pieces of cubed (kabob) chicken on a pita with the normal toppings and a pickle spear. Husband got a salad served on a teacup saucer, his fish and a few slices of sauteed zucchini for $30. So for 1 appetizer, our mains, 1 backlava, 2 tap waters and the tip we spent $71. I wouldn't go back b/c there are other Greek restaurants just as good or better where you get more for your money. read more

What a great find! And right under the neon pig. Ordered take-out as our first try with Vaso's Kitchen. From the phone service to the pick-up to the eating, it was a great experience. Staff is courteous and polite. We ordered a few apps. Would recommend the artichokes fiorentina. The chicken margarita looked good. As did the classic greek platter. MyGreek Style Vegetarian pizza was delicious and it was passed around the table it was just that good. Can't wait to go back and eat in. This is an Old Town Alexandria neighborhood gem! Fantastic service and well prepared and presented food. Everyone here is pleasant and attentive, I've eaten here often but Friday night was truly remarkable. Outdoor dining at its best! As we were waiting for an outside table, we were brought a glass of wine to enjoy while we waited. Even though they were packed (as is usual for this very popular local eatery), our wait wasn't long at all, and it was well worth it. My date had the special whole fish and I had the crab stuffed flounder special, both were done perfectly and presented very nicely. Overall we enjoyed our dining experience very much. This family owned restaurant is on the verge of opening another location on King Street, can't wait to try it out!! read more

The best Greek food in all of NoVa. This restaurant is a neighborhood gem with a warm ambience, great menu selection, and a wonderful selection of Greek wines. Our experience started badly when we called for a reservation, and they said that we could have a table at 7:30, but there might be a "5-10 minute" wait. We were finally seated after 40 minutes (after being reassured every 5 minutes that our table was "almost ready"). They promised that we were second in line, but seated several groups before us. The restaurant was noisy, crowded, and hot (until they started to blow the air conditioner, when it became freezing). The salad was iceberg lettuce swimming in oil. The entrees were good, but none of the prices of the "specials" (a full-page permanent list on the menu that are offered every day) were listed. It took quite a while for our entrees to arrive, and my husband was given the wrong entree (we didn't complain out of fear that it would be another 30 minutes until we finally got to eat). It was also too expensive for the quality - $28 for some mediocre veal. We will not return to Vaso's. read more

The food here is amazing! It tastes super fresh and carefully crafted. I had the crab stuffed shrimp and it literally melts in your mouth. It is surrounded by a lemon sauce however it is not too acidic. Don't forget to accompany the dish with a great glass of wine! I definitely will be back! read more

Yes, this is the restaurant with the Dixie Pig sign, which is a registered historic landmark. I have been here many times, and neither the food nor the service has ever disappointed me. I suggest that you come hungry and order the Greek sampler appetizer platter as well as a main course. One of my favorite spots in Alexandria. Greek-Italian food that is always delicious and reasonably priced. It is located outside the hustle and bustle of old town so there is plenty of parking and the staff is great and attentive. I have visited this place multiple times and it is hit or miss. I find the food to be excellent at times and then very average other times. The service is also the same way, I have had the best service and the worst service. The prices are a little too high for the quality of food. A friend told me about this restaurant. She said just look for the pig and she was right! By looking at other people's pictures of the outside we thought 2 things: that we didn't need reservations and that it was a casual looking place. We were wrong on both accounts. When we got there it was packed and far more upscale then we thought. The pig threw us off! Luckily there was one seat outside which was great because the sun was going down and it wasn't too hot then. As a Greek I was hoping for more traditional greek dishes like yemista (stuffed peppers) but I had to settle for the moussaka. My husband got the gyros platter. I love moussaka with a bit of nutmeg/cinnamon in it but it had neither :( it had too much ground beef and too little bechamel sauce. So it wasn't what I was hoping for but it wasn't horrible either. My husband thought his steak pieces went bad until the waitress told us it was pork and not beef! We were very relieved. For an appetizer we ordered the bruschetta which we agreed was the best we ever had! But it was too much bread with the table bread that they serve as well so pick one or the other. For dessert I ordered the yalaktoboureko which we both absolutely loved! It went very well with the strong greek coffee that we ordered. So if you're looking for a 'neighborhood gem' and one that you will rarely find any tourists at this is the place! And just look for the pig! read more

Vasco Kitchen is part Greek, and part Italian, (and not at all Dixie Pig BBQ like the large neon sign implies)! While the food is good, I didn't find anything exceptional except for the tiramisu dessert. Avoid the chicken kabobs, as they come with an uncharacteristic brown gravy like sauce. The chicken specialty sandwich was much more like a traditional kabob. Enjoy their nice outdoor patio, but only in good weather as it's not under cover. In summary, a decent neighborhood place if you are in the Old Town area and wish to be in a quiet location amidst residential homes rather than the hubbub of a commercial strip. read more

I've been here several times with a friend that lives in the area and I have to say that it's become one of the things that I look most forward to when I get to Old Town Alexandria. Though I've had visits where the wait staff is less attentive than others and I generally try to avoid going during the busiest dinner times -weekend nights- because the restaurant is fairly small; overall the service very good, and the food is always prompt and utterly, indescribably delicious. Be sure to save room for a Galaktoboureko -- a treat Vaso's introduced me to and, I believe, unique to them in the area. It's a mildly orange-flavored custard-based dessert wrapped in phyllo dough and drizzled in syrup, cinnamon, and powdered sugar. It's amazing. And it's even possible to bring it home if you get the sauces on the side and carefully reheat it in the oven. Yum! read more

Delicious, and so sinfully rich! I've eaten at Vaso's Kitchen on Powhatan (not to be confused with Vaso's on King Street, which is great but quite pricey) for about ten years now. I've never had a bad meal here, probably because they are liberal in their use of butter and other decadent ingredients. Tonight, I had an my companion both had the crabmeat-stuffed shrimp. You might be disappointed when the plate shows up with only four shrimp (along with a bowl of delicious, fresh pasta with marinara), but trust me when I tell you you won't leave hungry. The crabmeat stuffing has no breading whatsoever, the shrimp are cooked perfectly, and the pasta is yummy and filling. Service is great and the atmosphere is refined yet casual. Oh, and the side salad that comes before the entree has the most delicious dressing (Vaso's sells it in bottles and the one I bought lasted for about a week when I brought it home). Very cool Hawaiian girl meets Greek guy who's mom is an exceptional cook! One day they say: "Let's start a restaurant" They establish and perfect an exceptionally good restaurant. The place is small and intimate. The prices are moderately up there but extremely well worth it. The staff is friendly. The menu and wine list are diverse, proper, and good. The seafood pasta was extremely good!!!! To die for! Cooked to perfection! The calamari was the most tender I've ever eaten! The sauce must have been simmering slowly for hours and perfectly seasoned... Yum! I was vascillating between the choice of the seafood pasta and the stuffed veal chop. The waiters were having a friendly and fun debate over which of their dishes was there personal favorites. Felt like I was in heaven eating that pasta. There was a very good portion on the plate and I devoured all but a tiny lunch sized to go portion for lunch the next day. I wanted to save room for dessert with coffee. Some of the desserts are typical can find them anywhere types... but I had the home made Portokalia (light orange honey sauce over a light sort of cheese filled crepe) and a cappuchino... Yum! I will absolutely go out of my way to return here with friends and family or on a date night. I feel like I have to make up some special occasions to justify many visits here. Mom... I did not meet you, but I have to say... you have a wonderful daughter-in-law and your food is fantastic! The place is a gem! and Å'kålè ma'luna! I think that's cheers in Greek and Hawaiian...
