Quality of the pizza has gone way down. Nice place to eat and get a drink. But the pizza has become flat and dry. Comparable to at home out of the box frozen pizza you would get from the grocery store. They really need to up their game and relook at their pizza making process. Piece out del Ray has mastered gluten free breading. They have the best gluten free chicken tenders, hands down. We came here on a Saturday night and added ourselves to the online waitlist 20 minutes before we arrived. When we got there, we were seated immediately. Service was pretty miserable, but I think our server may have had too many tables and couldn't keep track of appetizers, drinks, boxes, checking in, etc. Despite the bumpy service, would come back strictly for the tenders...or order pickup! Stumbled across this place on a gorgeous October afternoon w/my SO. Got a bourbon apple cider slushee, which was fantastic. I loved all the gluten free options and SO loved the veggie options It was easy to find something we both liked. We shared a veggie frittata and pumpkin bread and sat out on the deck. My toddler asks for pizza nearly every single day, so after spending some time at the playground, I decided to take her across the street for pizza for dinner. The space is rather large which is great for families and large groups. They have high tops and regular tables. The staff were super friendly and accommodating. The appetizers were good, but the pizza was just not up to par. My husband loves Detroit-style pizza so when he saw it on the menu, he had to try it. Finally stopped by and was super impressed. Ordered the slow-roasted artichoke app and a rose while waiting for our carryout order. It was slow roasted in lemon and olive oil, and served with arugula, lightly roasted cherry tomatoes, charred lemon. Fabulous. read more

We went as a group of five for lunch and had a positive experience. It's a newer restaurant and the insides is very spacious with large TVs for sports watching and booth seats. Found our new brunch spot! We usually come for dinner but discovered their brunch menu. They had a special on mimosas for $5. There is a large variety of gluten free and vegan dishes. There is a separate fryer dedicated to gluten free food. We had the pancakes and the classic breakfast. After having not gone to Piece Out, for a couple of years we decided to give it a try again, instead of having to wait 45 minutes for a seat at Stracci. We enjoyed a seat by the window and the ambiance was nice. Unfortunately, that was the high-water mark of our dining experience. We decided to try a Detroit style pizza, but what was served to us was NY style pizza but with the correct topping we ordered. The server acknowledged his/her mistake and reordered our replacement. However, when the second pizza arrived, half of the pizza had our ordered topping wrong. When we raised this with our server we were offered a free dessert, which we declined. When the check came to us, one glass of wine was taken off the tab, which didn't cover the tip that I still left. We should have waited for a table at Stracci. read more

Trendy spot for hanging out. I checked them out for Restaurant Week. When I arrived a couple was eating an amazing looking pizza! It wasn't on the Restaurant Week menu but I did appreciate that they sell by the slice too, so I grabbed a slice for the later and it was good! I started with the Apple Cider Bourbon Slush, if you like apple cider you just have to get two of these ;) It was so delicious! I had the greek salad, the Squid Ink Fettuccine Fra Diavolo which was sooooo good and the spicy sauce wasn't off putting so that was good. It was very tasty! For dessert I had the lemon ricotta bundt cake that was a hit as well!  I am definitely going back to Piece Out! Because my wife has celiac disease, we are limited to restaurants that can promise no cross- contamination. The online menu seemed to suggest this might be the case at your restaurant, but as there is no phone number or obvious way to communicate, we had to visit in person to ask. Upon inquiring, I learned that while the gnocci is prepared in a separate boiler, the gluten free doughs are placed in the same oven as the gluten pizza. That is certainly enough contamination to send my wife to the hospital. I asked if perhaps the kitchen could place my wife's order on foil, and learned that the foil could not be used in the oven due to a chemical burn off with the brand you use. There was no other solution offered. We were disappointed that Piece Out cannot find a way to introduce a barrier between a gluten-free pizza and the contaminated oven, especially considering the extra charge introduced for the supposed gluten free pizza. read more

First time at Piece Out Del Ray and as we often do, I went for a happy hour experience which is usually a good indicator of whether I would want to return for dinner or lunch. First impressions upon entering is that it seems to be a bit of a mixed or muddled concept. Definite pizza joint vibe at the front/bar area with nods to more of a fine dining experience on the perimeter tables. There is a back area which seems more set up for larger parties and a casual atmosphere with couches and a fair amount of open space, but it seems a little undeveloped. It really doesn't have a distinct identity or personality, but it is open and welcoming (which can be said for the overall vibe). Prompt bar service by a bartender who was definitely multi-tasking, but he really kept it cool, professional, and poised, while greeting customers, making cocktails, taking orders, serving beers, wine, and more. I had a terrific montepulciano and a very well made old fashioned. I also ordered a couple of apps. I selected the house made Focaccia, which has a very tasty garlic whipped ricotta as an accompaniment, and, the "Polenta Fries" which is crispy fried polenta "fries" served with pesto aioli and lemon garlic aioli dipping sauces, topped with grated pecorino romano​. What a good idea this was! Very light breading, cripsy/crunchy texture to the outside and warm, rich polenta filling. I favored the lemon garlic sauce...it provided a little extra zest and depth flavorwise. We saw pizzas coming out to other diners, both the "Detroit style" thick square version, plus a thinner crust. The thinner crust pizza looked decent but the Detroit looked a bit underwhelming...the crust looked spongy rather than crunchy but since I did not have either, I can't really speak to the quality of either pie with any authority. 4.5 stars based on my admittedly limited experience. We used to love Piece Out and was excited to come back after they reopened. Unfortunately, it's no longer family friendly; no kid menus, only had glass glasses (brave choice), and games for only those 18+. I'm disappointed and confused by this direction, and hope they pivot to accommodate families while fostering an adult space...like Pork Barrel (restaurant across the street). Our server was absolutely wonderful and did her best. It was clear that the restaurant had put her in a tough spot. First time dining here, saw a few people eating some salads that looked amazing on the patio & I was totally in a salad bowl mood. So I grabbed a table outdoors on the alley side, ordered an IPA, the burrata & prosciutto crostini, which btw was a salad, I thought it was a flat bread. I was so hungry I clearly didn't read the whole description. It was so yummy! Also got a shrimp & argula salad too. Food was very fresh, tasted good, simple ingredients and I was a happy camper. Soon after my food came to the table given how hungry I was at 8pm, I immediately started to enjoy the food, didn't notice some guy who came from behind (kitchen red door side) and acted as if he was the manager. He asked about my food, I was super friendly & said how awesome it was. Soon to realize some crazy guy just acting like he's the manager & saw the opportunity to talk to me, sitting there alone, no one in sight. I got real nervous as he wouldn't leave me alone and thankfully after some time a server was doing his rounds, saw my body language & came over. The guy took off and server helped me move to the front of the restaurant. I couldn't believe how this random guy cornered me so efficiently given the opportunity, in a neighborhood like Del Ray. I'm so thankful for the nice server who later told me, he just does rounds to see if anyone needs anything and it was my luck he happened to come by as I had no other way out. So ladies, if you are dining solo, probably should avoid the alley seating. I highly recommend the food, friendly kind staff and I'll definitely be back to try more. Consistent in pizza quality and service. I've been lucky enough to have Cristina as my order taker for both beverages and pizza. She serves them up with a smile and is always efficient! Our usual go to is two large cheese pizzas. Call it $40 out the door incl. tip when we're picking up. This is my second time ordering from here and it was yet again a fail. The first time, I chalked it up me disliking the dish. It wasn't good enough for a good review, but not so terrible for a bad one. This time, I ordered garlic parmesan fries. It's not an overly complex dish that you can mess up too terribly. The description was literally garlic, parmesan fries. Yet, mess up the dish they did. They came swimming in olive oil. We actually "strained" the oil and it measured 1/2 cup. They were soggy, salty, and disgusting. Who pours a 1/2 cup of olive oil over french fries? They refunded my money for the fries. My take away: they can't cook. I don't recommend ordering anything that requires cooking. Salads are probably okay. Some others seem to like the pizza. read more

Prior to stopping by Piece Out Pizza today, I had never heard of Detroit style pizza. After stuffing myself with two slices of pepperoni, I can report that Detroit Pizza is more like Sicilian Pizza rather than their Chicago Deep Dish cousin. The pizza was cheesy to the edge and crispy with a little grease, just the way I like it. I ordered two slices for lunch and only managed to finish one and a half, the other half will accompany breakfast tomorrow. Social distancing was observed, there is outdoor seating, I got my order to go, so I did not stay inside very long.
