Every visit reminds me of those times. Dad and gramps would've liked it here. You need to call ahead or go online and get in the queue. Walk-ins are welcome, of course; you will be waiting. For a reasonable $30 I had the sides tapered and trimmed the top. I have a half dozen cow licks to contend with, two extremely large ones. That doesn't phase these boys. The cuts always come out looking great and the banter in the shop is typically funny and careless. The best place to try out a new joke. I've seen Kyle and now Brian. It's next to Kilwin's. As expected the Barber pole is right outside the doors. 5 Barber chairs. Simple setup, no frills or amenities. Walk-ins are welcome. Jazzy music in the background playing. The barber closest to the window was open for a cut. He has long hair, back in a low messy bumtail. Clean cut beard. Seems cool. He let us know that a cut is $30 cash, so there's no confusion later. My husband asked for a shorter cut is all and the Barber got right to it. The Barber is very thorough and wants to make sure to give a great cut. In town for a few days on some crazy travel hopping...I needed a trim as I was looking a bit shaggy. I'm giving a talk at the university and I gotta look sharp! I asked a professor friend of mine where to and he pointed me here. Online Jordan was open for the morning two days later...hopped on the reservation. A short walk from my hotel and I was there early, so was Jordan. It's a chill space and the oldest barber shop in town. Sat down...told him what I was kinda looking for (loose guidelines: taper, fade up from a #3, depoof the top) and he nailed it. I was out like 15 minutes later with probably one of the best cuts I've had in a while. Hey wait: no credit cards are taken here! I was given a haircut by Tony. Could not have been more disappointed. My hair appears to be too long in some places, and too short in others. He seemed to be very unsure of what he was doing. He genuinely did a terrible job and I feel like I just paid someone who has no idea how to cut hair 40 dollars to cut mine. My hair just looks very weird and i deeply regret coming here. Ladies, if you have short hair this is the place. Price friendly, entertainment, and genuinely nice guys. I've been going to Tony for nearly 5 years. Never left with a haircut I didn't like. Beware...if you are looking to run in and out, that won't happen here. These guys take their time with the details of the cut, they chat, they make sure it's what you want. Therefore the wait time to get into a chair can last up to an hour. Recently they started a sign in sheet so you can walk about town for a bit and come back, just be in your window of time. This place is great - very relaxed, good atmosphere and really good hair cuts. I had Zach cut my hair and he nailed it.

I stopped in to get my beard trimmed for a wedding while in town. The shop was very cool. All first come first served; the wait was surprisingly long for 2 in the afternoon but I took it as a good sign. The waiting chairs were super comfortable. These guys gave 5* haircuts to everyone i saw walk in. I personally was very impressed with the attention to detail they gave my beard trim, which @ $10 was a great value. The best part? My beard still looked crisp 3 days later, like I had just got it cut again. When I'm back in Ann Arbor, I'll be stopping here. read more

Kyle did a great job with my haircut, was normal and not a patriarchal jackass, and cut my hair exactly how I wanted. He took Venmo even when I didn't have cash. I've been coming here on and off since moving to AA in July. The cuts were always pretty good considering the price. Every barber shop is a "guy's space" by nature of what they do and who they serve. So, when I first came in and there was a deer hunting show on the TV, it was okay. Not my cup of tea, but fine. The next time I came in and the shop chat turned to the body weight and breasts of one actress versus the body of another, I politely declined comment and changed the subject. But today waiting for a haircut, the conversation turned to Bruce Jenner and the recent media coverage. The term "freakshow" instantly slurred at the mention of Bruce's name marked my exit and the end of my frequenting this place. Is it possible to be men, get a good cut and skip the sexism, misogyny and transphobia? Not at this place. I'll try another (any other) barber shop on campus instead. read more

I love this place. Mike owns the joint, and the barbers there take their craft seriously. They don't just cut your hair, they sculpt it to perfection. I like my hair tight, and other barbers shy away from making it too short. These guys do it exactly right. They also use a straight razor for shaves and your neck. Cuts cost $16. The conversation is great. (Ask Mike about his Mustang.) They've got girlie magazines for those who may have interest in looking at naked women while getting your hair chopped, ESPN/Spike on the TV and they always know what's going on with the Detroit sports teams. The one big downside is the wait. Haircuts can sometimes take 45 minutes to an hour. It's not uncommon to be there for 75-90 minutes if there is another person or two in front of you in line. Overall, it's a place I'd hang out for the conversation and atmosphere. Great haircuts, too. It just frequently takes too long. read more

Super happy with my haircut! I was pretty nervous going to a barbershop because it looks so guy focused but I wanted a closer cut for my pixie cut. Mike was super friendly and welcoming and did a fantastic job on a women's pixie cut! He listened to what I wanted and did a great job. With their prices, I can come in on a monthly basis to maintain my cut rather than going to an over priced salon and have sloppy hair between cuts. Thanks Varsity for a great job! All three barbers are uniquely talented, and since we moved to Ann Arbor three years ago, this is the only barber shop I would consider. In passing by, we asked my dad if he wanted to get a hair cut here so he gave it a shot. Yes, they've got the barber pole thing going on, and some old pictures. There's lots of manly magazines, and since it seems to be barber's choice for tv channels you can bet there was some car show on or some other sports channel. Haircuts are $16, and there are a couple young guys in there who give the haircuts. They seem nice enough and did a good job taking his time making sure my dad got the cut he wanted. My dad did have trouble explaining, but I don't think I'd personally want my dad to have his hair flair out. I'm not sure what he's thinking, but I think my dad's haircut looks good. I have a thick coarse long beard. I've tried nearly every barber shop in the A2/Ypsilanti area over the years. Everyone of them didn't know how to trim, shape or fade my beard. The best haircut I've had in Ann Arbor! My appointment was looked over at another barber so I was on the hunt for a quick cut and Varsity was more than able to deliver. I'm always skeptical going to a new shop but they made me feel right at home. There is a TV with ESPN on and the guys are totally cool. Mike cut my hair and did a great job. Sometimes it's hard to vocalize the cut you want but he did a great job of delivering with on my less than explicit request. Plus you really can't beat the price for the quality cut you get. I can afford to come in regularly and maintain it! The place is walk in only, but even with a few people ahead of me they moved quickly and efficiently. The good: all the employees provided great customer service, was able to give me a quality haircut and made sure I felt comfortable at the establishment. The bad: only complaint is the cost. One of my main concerns when I moved to Ann Arbor from San Antonio, Texas was who in the hell was going to cut my hair, since I had been going to the same barber for 2 years, I was mildly concerned. However, after going to Varsity Barber Shop today, my concern has been put to rest. Yeah, ok, the wait is long but that is to be expected from anyone who engages is quality work. All of the barbers are chatty and professional. The Decor is old-school barber shop which adds to the ambience and experience. The location is great if you enjoy people watching, especially if you get Tony, who's got the window chair. Most of all, you get what you pay for, which is a great haircut done by a professional. As others have stated previously, do not goof you're in a rush, cuz you're bound to be there at a minimum of an hour, however it's worth it. Remember that it's cash only though. read more

I come here whenever I have an hour to kill waiting for a haircut, which is to say not often. But the quality of has generally been pretty good. Prices are above average but they obsess over every last hair. I suggest being very explicit about what you want.
