I remember my times as a boy when dad and grandpa would walk me up to the local barber. He always had the latest Highlights magazine, popcorn and cokes. Same vibe here. Every visit reminds me of those times. Dad and gramps would've liked it here. You need to call ahead or go online and get in the queue. Walk-ins are welcome, of course; you will be waiting. For a reasonable $30 I had the sides tapered and trimmed the top. I have a half dozen cow licks to contend with, two extremely large ones. That doesn't phase these boys. The cuts always come out looking great and the banter in the shop is typically funny and careless. The best place to try out a new joke. I've seen Kyle and now Brian. Both were very professional and both excellent stylists. My next trip to this area will be right around trim time. Good for me. 03/25 read more

It's next to Kilwin's. As expected the Barber pole is right outside the doors. 5 Barber chairs. Simple setup, no frills or amenities. Walk-ins are welcome. Jazzy music in the background playing. The barber closest to the window was open for a cut. He has long hair, back in a low messy bumtail. Clean cut beard. Seems cool. He let us know that a cut is $30 cash, so there's no confusion later. My husband asked for a shorter cut is all and the Barber got right to it. The Barber is very thorough and wants to make sure to give a great cut. The barber favors using the switch blade razor for trimming, it has an attachment for texturingthat's talent. read more

In town for a few days on some crazy travel hopping...I needed a trim as I was looking a bit shaggy. I'm giving a talk at the university and I gotta look sharp! I asked a professor friend of mine where to and he pointed me here. Online Jordan was open for the morning two days later...hopped on the reservation. A short walk from my hotel and I was there early, so was Jordan. It's a chill space and the oldest barber shop in town. Sat down...told him what I was kinda looking for (loose guidelines: taper, fade up from a #3, depoof the top) and he nailed it. I was out like 15 minutes later with probably one of the best cuts I've had in a while. Hey wait: no credit cards are taken here! Jordan told me where to find an ATM round the block...bing bang boom I returned and paid with a nice tip with cash money. I'll probably get cuts whenever I return to Ann Arbor...seriously! read more

I was given a haircut by Tony. Could not have been more disappointed. My hair appears to be too long in some places, and too short in others. He seemed to be very unsure of what he was doing. He genuinely did a terrible job and I feel like I just paid someone who has no idea how to cut hair 40 dollars to cut mine. My hair just looks very weird and i deeply regret coming here. I cannot wait for my hair to grow back so that I can try again with a new barber. Please avoid this place! read more

Credit's due where credit's deserved! Big shout out to Bryan for superb professionalism and technique. This is my second visit and now claiming this joint as my barbershop . Good vibes and great service. read more

Ask for Tony. This place has been here for 100+ years and is a step back in time. The barber pole out front is original, yet the service is current. I couldn't resist the opportunity for a straight-razor shave with my best man right before my wedding. read more

Great shop with licensed barbers who have perfected their craft! The atmosphere reminds me of when my dad used to take me to get my hair cut. All the guys are friendly and welcoming! Mike did a great job! It's cash only, so bring some extra for a tip! (Chase atm is only a block away) read more

Varsity Barber Shop - Haircut - Barbers Near Me - Ann Arbor, Michigan

This is one of those reviews I hesitate to write since I hate to draw more attention to a small place I love. Mike, Tony, and Brian. The barbers who become friends. Ladies, if you have short hair this is the place. Price friendly, entertainment, and genuinely nice guys. I've been going to Tony for nearly 5 years. Never left with a haircut I didn't like. Beware...if you are looking to run in and out, that won't happen here. These guys take their time with the details of the cut, they chat, they make sure it's what you want. Therefore the wait time to get into a chair can last up to an hour. Recently they started a sign in sheet so you can walk about town for a bit and come back, just be in your window of time. Cash only. read more

Walk-ins welcome BS I walk in and they tell me next week, well then you don't welcome walk-ins do you?? If you can't bother to create/hold space for walk-ins, then you don't welcome them. Barbershop that only does reservations, what a joke read more

I had Brian and it was one of the best cuts I've had in a long time (and my curly hair has been notoriously difficult to work with). Strongly suggest checking it out! read more

First and last time. Coming to varsity hoping to get a better haircut based on what I hear. It is also a little pricier than my old place. They literally cut me bold like in the military. The ridiculous thing is that they promise a good haircut, and right after that they make the worst haircut ever. Avoid this place unless you want to become bold! read more

These dudes are awesome! Got in and out quickly with one of the best haircuts I've ever paid for. Definitely would recommend to any males in the area. read more

Would give 5 stars if I knew if Brian the barber was single. Asking for a friend..... she gives you the peace sign everyday while drinkin a Starbucks read more

This place is great - very relaxed, good atmosphere and really good hair cuts. I had Zach cut my hair and he nailed it.

I stopped in to get my beard trimmed for a wedding while in town. The shop was very cool. All first come first served; the wait was surprisingly long for 2 in the afternoon but I took it as a good sign. The waiting chairs were super comfortable. These guys gave 5* haircuts to everyone i saw walk in. I personally was very impressed with the attention to detail they gave my beard trim, which @ $10 was a great value. The best part? My beard still looked crisp 3 days later, like I had just got it cut again. When I'm back in Ann Arbor, I'll be stopping here. read more

Had a great shave last Friday from Jordan, the newest barber at this shop. He is a very friendly young man and did a professional job. I would recommend this shop to anyone looking to try the experience of a barbershop shave. read more

I go here at least once a semester when I'm trying to look "hella fresh." Nice guys, great ambience, and better haircuts.

I've been coming here on and off since moving to AA in July. The cuts were always pretty good considering the price. Every barber shop is a "guy's space" by nature of what they do and who they serve. So, when I first came in and there was a deer hunting show on the TV, it was okay. Not my cup of tea, but fine. The next time I came in and the shop chat turned to the body weight and breasts of one actress versus the body of another, I politely declined comment and changed the subject. But today waiting for a haircut, the conversation turned to Bruce Jenner and the recent media coverage. The term "freakshow" instantly slurred at the mention of Bruce's name marked my exit and the end of my frequenting this place. Is it possible to be men, get a good cut and skip the sexism, misogyny and transphobia? Not at this place. I'll try another (any other) barber shop on campus instead. read more

I love this place. Mike owns the joint, and the barbers there take their craft seriously. They don't just cut your hair, they sculpt it to perfection. I like my hair tight, and other barbers shy away from making it too short. These guys do it exactly right. They also use a straight razor for shaves and your neck. Cuts cost $16. The conversation is great. (Ask Mike about his Mustang.) They've got girlie magazines for those who may have interest in looking at naked women while getting your hair chopped, ESPN/Spike on the TV and they always know what's going on with the Detroit sports teams. The one big downside is the wait. Haircuts can sometimes take 45 minutes to an hour. It's not uncommon to be there for 75-90 minutes if there is another person or two in front of you in line. Overall, it's a place I'd hang out for the conversation and atmosphere. Great haircuts, too. It just frequently takes too long. read more

2/3 guys weren't wearing masks. The men all spoke very loud and inappropriately. I was frequently offended by their jokes. One of whom was the owner. Despite these guys. Kyle did a great job with my haircut, was normal and not a patriarchal jackass, and cut my hair exactly how I wanted. He took Venmo even when I didn't have cash. I'm going to give them another try just because of that, but if it isn't any better, I'll be switching barber shops. read more

Great haircuts and a great price. I've been to at least a half dozen other shops around town and this one is consistently the best. I don't go anywhere else now. I'd give it five stars if they used a straight razor on my neck and side burns. Also, better magazines wouldn't hurt. read more

I guess I'm the first person to review the place who has actually gotten a haircut here. I got a haircut here. It's an old-school barber shop, owned by a younger guy. A totally decent haircut. Good technique, good conversation. What more can you ask for? read more

Excellent old school barber shop -- young owner who really knows how to cut men's hair. Highly recommended. read more

Super happy with my haircut! I was pretty nervous going to a barbershop because it looks so guy focused but I wanted a closer cut for my pixie cut. Mike was super friendly and welcoming and did a fantastic job on a women's pixie cut! He listened to what I wanted and did a great job. With their prices, I can come in on a monthly basis to maintain my cut rather than going to an over priced salon and have sloppy hair between cuts. Thanks Varsity for a great job! I will be back. read more

THE BEST. ABSOLUTELY THE BEST. I have lived in many different cities, and gone to dozens of different barbers, and this barber shop is THE BEST. All three barbers are uniquely talented, and since we moved to Ann Arbor three years ago, this is the only barber shop I would consider. I have read a few bitchy reviews about the wait time; GUYS, THIS IS A CLASSIC MEN'S BARBER SHOP!!! Sit back, relax, wait your turn; you will get a meticulous haircut. If you are in such a desperate rush, buy some dog clippers and do it yourself. This barber shop gets a very wide range of customers - male, female, old, young, kids, white, people of color - all I know, everyone I observe leaves with a spectacular haircut.I wish I could leave 6 stars. read more

I've walked in the door several times with 3 kids plus husband, and they've been quickly and professionally attended to. Good prices, friendly quick service, and good cuts. At the nat'l chains you take a risk of a bad haircut. Here you can rest easy; you'll get a good cut at a good price. Wish list: better seating and a deep, thorough cleaning. read more

These guys are great and so professional. I was looking for a great hair cut place for almost a year, I finally found it. I was waiting with this review a while, in order to see whether my satisfaction continuing after few visits . So the answer is Yes. read more

In passing by, we asked my dad if he wanted to get a hair cut here so he gave it a shot. Yes, they've got the barber pole thing going on, and some old pictures. There's lots of manly magazines, and since it seems to be barber's choice for tv channels you can bet there was some car show on or some other sports channel. Haircuts are $16, and there are a couple young guys in there who give the haircuts. They seem nice enough and did a good job taking his time making sure my dad got the cut he wanted. My dad did have trouble explaining, but I don't think I'd personally want my dad to have his hair flair out. I'm not sure what he's thinking, but I think my dad's haircut looks good. The other barber also complimented my dad on his new do as well. read more

The best haircut I've had in Ann Arbor! My appointment was looked over at another barber so I was on the hunt for a quick cut and Varsity was more than able to deliver. I'm always skeptical going to a new shop but they made me feel right at home. There is a TV with ESPN on and the guys are totally cool. Mike cut my hair and did a great job. Sometimes it's hard to vocalize the cut you want but he did a great job of delivering with on my less than explicit request. Plus you really can't beat the price for the quality cut you get. I can afford to come in regularly and maintain it! The place is walk in only, but even with a few people ahead of me they moved quickly and efficiently. I would definitely recommend if your looking for a great local Barbershop! read more

I have a thick coarse long beard. I've tried nearly every barber shop in the A2/Ypsilanti area over the years. Everyone of them didn't know how to trim, shape or fade my beard. I randomly tried this shop and was surprised by the results. Thanks Brain for a great cut. Would recommend him any day for a beard cut if your struggling to find someone who knows what to do with your man mane. read more

A great no-nonsense barbershop in the finest tradition. A pleasure to get your haircut!

Excellent haircut, definitely recommended, and only $16. Truly impressed how meticulous Mike was (even with 30 minutes to closing and a line waiting), and he did a great job with my tapered cut. I'll be back. read more

Recently moved to Ann Arbor and needed a haircut. I found this place online and decided to try it out. The good: all the employees provided great customer service, was able to give me a quality haircut and made sure I felt comfortable at the establishment. The bad: only complaint is the cost. I'm used to paying $10/haircut and this place cost $21. Other than the cost, I think this place is great. Definitely check it out if you are looking to get a haircut. read more

One of my main concerns when I moved to Ann Arbor from San Antonio, Texas was who in the hell was going to cut my hair, since I had been going to the same barber for 2 years, I was mildly concerned. However, after going to Varsity Barber Shop today, my concern has been put to rest. Yeah, ok, the wait is long but that is to be expected from anyone who engages is quality work. All of the barbers are chatty and professional. The Decor is old-school barber shop which adds to the ambience and experience. The location is great if you enjoy people watching, especially if you get Tony, who's got the window chair. Most of all, you get what you pay for, which is a great haircut done by a professional. As others have stated previously, do not goof you're in a rush, cuz you're bound to be there at a minimum of an hour, however it's worth it. Remember that it's cash only though. read more

Great guys who know how to cut hair. Very friendly environment with a lot of regulars. The downside (and it may not be important to some) is that their popularity means long waits, regardless of day of week or time of day. If you don't mind waiting for an hour or more for a haircut, it's great. If you are in a hurry, go elsewhere. read more

Great place, easy conversation, and very affordable. Still going strong after a 110 years!

Mike delivers! He has done a beautiful job trimming my beau's first beard. We love the casual, friendly unpretentious, yet professional atmosphere in an old-style barbershop setting. So happy to have found this gem on Yelp. read more

Came here out of recommendation from my friend. Mike cut my hair and trimmed my beard. I gave him an idea of what I wanted and he did the rest. He cut everything exactly how I was thinking. You can tell he knew what he was doing and takes his job seriously. The price was very reasonable too. Beats out those chain hair cut places and they charge the same amount. I will be back again in the future. Five stars! read more

I love that they had a tv so I could watch the tigers. The haircut SUCKED though. I have really simple hair style (buzz cut) and asked the barber to just buzz it all down to a 3. He ignored me and just went away at it taking it down to about a 1 1/2. I am not happy with the haircut at all. I had the man with all the tattoos so I don't know if any of the other ones are any good, but definitely do not get the man with the tattoos. read more
