I had visited several Vapianos when I was working in Germany and loved the concept. You get a card which is scanned at various stations - food (pizza, pasta, salads) and drinks (full bar). This location....not so much. We came here for dinner on our first night in Vienna because it was really close to our apartment and we were pretty much dead after an international flight + an afternoon of exploring. It's definitely popular with locals, particularly students from the nearby campus. Prices are reasonable and the food is pretty tasty. What's the issue? It's sloooowwwwwww.....glacially, unbelievably slow. I was waiting in one of the pasta lines and the cook decided to make each order as it was ordered rather than giving people a pager. Each order took 5+ minutes so a line with 4-5 people in front of me equaled 20 minutes of standing around. Very frustrating. Once I got my order it was fine - not enough sauce IMO, but tasty enough. There are menus in English in front of each station which was nice. I did appreciate the ability to order wine by the carafe, because trust me I needed it! Good enough for an inexpensive meal, especially for shoppers on nearby Mariahilferstrasse. read more

Opened the door to be greeted by a yummy smell of pasta. Walked up the stairs and found there was a location to walk up and order (with a menu in German) or a place with kiosks to manually enter your order which had a menu in English, Dutch, or German. We chose to order from the kiosk as we don't read or speak German. I ordered the mista piccola and the gamberetti spinici. The mista piccola was advertised as a mixed leaf salad with carrots and tomatoes and the picture on the kiosk was a variety of dark green and purple mix. I ordered it with the lime chili dressing and the dressing had a nice spice but I hardly ate any of it because it was nothing like the picture from the kiosk. It was filled with white lettuce which I hate. The gamberetti spinici was a large portion with mostly pasta. There were a reasonable amount of prawns but the flavor was lacking and there was hardly any spinach. My husband ordered the Pesto Basilico and added chicken. His portion was also large and was drenched in pesto sauce (there was a large amount of sauce sitting at the bottom of the bowl). There were less than a handful bite size pieces of chicken in the dish so he took it back up to the counter to have more chicken added (the chicken was an extra €3) and was told "there is already chicken in there". Overall super disappointed. Way overpriced for the quality of food and lack of service. Would recommend avoiding this spot while in Vienna South. read more

German Italian food in Austria. Who woulda thunk it?!?! I like the concept of the place (am sure somebody mentioned that in another review) and the food is OK but damn, sometimes they're just so slow in the pasta line. Is it worth the wait? Sometimes. Sometimes though just get a salad or pizza! My second trip there, I forgot to get my drink after getting the pasta. So I went to where there were some and grabbed one and brought it to the counter to pay. The girl said, "go to the other bar, this is take-away." I told her that I had my food already and would like to eat instead of walking all the way down to the other end of the restaurant dodging loads of people. She said, "this is take-away only." I told her to just take the damn money. I paid, she took it and that was that. What a shitty attitude! She's one of the least busy people in the restaurant and cannot be bothered to do her job. I love Vapiano. And I can't believe how many times I have eaten at this exact one and not gotten round to reviewing it yet! I had my first Vapiano experience in this one on Theobaldgasse and have loved it ever since. The concept of Vapiano is great: queue up and order your food, watch it be cooked to your flavour (spice, oils etc), the chef tops up your card with what you ordered, you enjoy your food and pay your card balance on the way out at the end. There are fresh herbs and oils on the tables to add to your meal. You can get menus in English and in German. Good prices, tasty food, friendly staff! read more

For a no-fuss and delicious fresh pasta meal, this is a perfect venue. The pasta is cooked to your liking - the pesto with cheese is a must experience. If pizza is more your bite, then try the Diablo with the sausage & red onions. The bite really packs a punch. read more

This is a convenient Vapiano location for a food break while you're doing your shopping on Mariahilferstrasse. The dining room is bigger than it appears as it curls around the kitchen, with many more tables in the back. The value and quality are excellent, as with all Vapianos, and the pizzas, pastas, and salads are made to order. They even make their own pasta daily on the premises. There are fresh herbs and nice oils on the table for garnishing. Help yourself. You can get some bread for free, just ask for it at the pasta or salad counters. My only complaint is that the glasses they give you for tap water hold about two sips. So if you're thirsty, you have to keep going up for refills... annoying! read more

Restaurant chains can sometimes be hit and miss (See TGI Fridays) but this seems to be one of the successes. How it works: you enter and are given a card with which you do the ordering. You order directly from the chefs and scan your card. Then depending on what you ordered, you wait for the food or are given a beeper and retire to your chosen spot. After it beeps you collect your food and dig in. When you have finished you take the card to the door, scan it again and are given the amount to pay. Pretty simple! The decor is airy and fresh and clean canteen style tables/banks with fresh herbs on the table for you to pick at your leisure. This for me is a fantastic little idea that should be adopted everywhere at once. The food is above average for an Italian restaurant and is good value for money, fulling too! The wine list is quite impressive too for a self service restaurant. Not somewhere you could go for a romantic meal but for a nice, clean place to grab a bite to eat this is very recommended. read more

For me this is one of the better Vapiano's in Vienna, as it has lots of room to get your food and loads of space between tables to move around without getting your tray knocked out of your hands. Well done to the design team on this one. read more

May I reccomend you the following: - when you're open until 22hr, don't turn up the lights at 21:45 - when you're open until 22hr, don't turn off the music at 21:45 - when you're open until 22hr, don't start scrubbing the floor at 21:45 That's rediculous behavior. Or, if you want to lock the door at 22:00, lights out, everybody home.. Don't let me in at 21:30 and take an order for two pizza's that need 15 minutes to bake. The food is the best.. The ambance is great.. The prices are spot on.. But you don't get it if you think only that makes you a good restaurant. read more

I visited this restaurant for the first time today and left absolutely furious about the service I received. As I handed the chef my 'chip card' to charge my meal he stared through me, pointed at the desk in front of him and told me "down there, maybe you should stop using your phone" (I had briefly looked at my phone while he prepared my food) - when I explained I hadn't used the system before and didn't realise how it worked I was told "now you know everything, go". As I asked for the manager to complain I was interrupted by a server who tells me I need to "chill out" while laughing at me. I was told I "didn't need a manager". Food is ok, brought down to poor by the side order of bad attitude you get for free! If you want to eat here chose another branch! read more

Quality of food excellent and cooked to order in front of you. Was relatively quiet at 10pm so the service was reasonably quick. Meals range from €6.5-10, with some salads for a little less. Improvement would be to provide plain bread with each pasta meal or offer it as an option - did not notice this on the menu. read more

Vapiano is a nice Italian cafe in Vienna. There are multiple locations throughout Eastern Europe and the rest of the world. The food is quick and the portion sizes are pretty decent. When you enter, you are given one card per person. You take your card and bring it to the different stations. There are different stations for pizza, pasta, and salads. At the station, you order your meal and then they charge what you ordered to your card. Then when you exit the restaurant you pay your balance on the card. I am not a huge fan of this card system. It is such an easy way to rip off tourists. The location near the Opera House really ripped us off, we ordered three small salads and they charged us for three large salads. We didn't even realize until we got back to the hotel I tried both the green salad and Caesar salad and they were both fresh and delicious. The pizzas are extremely thin crust and crispy. Yummmm TIP: Make sure you clearly state what you are ordering and make sure that is exactly the charge they put on your card. Overall, I really like this place. We visited several times when we were in Vienna. I highly recommend checking it out. read more

There used to be a great Vapiano near my uni in Amsterdam, but since then all my experiences with them have been bad. This branch was the worst. The pizza caprese I got had a watery sauce, making the pizza dough soaked through in the centre. The cook who took my order lost his patience with me when I didn't see right away where to scan my card. My fiancée ate a half hour later than me because she decided to get pasta. It's inexpensive but the queues and the low quality of the food are not worth it. Never again! read more

Bad cooks and stupid concept. Why should I rush for a meal that I pay so much for.

Yes, Vapiano is a chain of Italian restaurants, without table service. But the food is really good, truly tastes like a real Italian restaurant and is cooked right in front of you according to YOUR preferences. They have several counters, one for each Italian specialty: Pasta , Salad and Pizzas, and also have one spot for starters, desserts and drinks. You get a card at the entrance that you charge at one of the counters (depending on what you are having). You make your choice among the appetizing dishes, can customise it (sauces, added ingredients (€) , herbs...), and then admire the chef cook it for you! If you are having pizza, you get a bipper that you take with you at your table. A few minutes later it will bip and you can go back get your freshly baked pizza! All in all, a quick and tasty meal for a reasonable price. As for the ambiance, I like the modern decoration and its high wood tables and seats. So yes, Vapiano is a channel of Italian restaurants. Luckily for us: there are several of them in the City! :) read more

Of the locations, this is my least favourite in the world. But they still crank out tasty dishes. Yes the pasta is 'fresh' and they have many herbs, but it's how you cook the meal that counts. Here the cooks look and act very tired and uninspired. Almost making you feel bad for ordering something. I asked for water and when correcting the amount to 2 versus 1 I received attitude and reluctance to serve. If their glasses were bigger than a shot glass it would not have been a problem in the first place. Otherwise the place is a carbon copy of the rest which surprisingly has better pasta than most other Italian restaurants. Not pizza, but pasta. You get there easily by U2 and several buses Food: The have THE most delicious Italian food I've ever had. The Pizza is just perfect with delicious cheese. If you order salad, you'll get a huge bowl with everything you'll ever imagine to find in a salad Prices: Quite expensive, but that's okay if you look at the food and the high quality ingredients inside Decorated: There are some olive trees and tables around it. This Vapiano location is perfect when out for a shopping trip or movies or what not near Mariahilferstrasse. Unlike the one at the other end of Mahu at the Westbahnhof or the one at Wien Mitte, you don't have to negotiate a lot of stairs or a tremendous crowd for lunch. The food is the same as what you get in other Vapianos, but I was surprised at how long we waited for a pizza. They weren't that busy and my risotto was cooked and eaten way before my husband even got his pizza. Hopefully a one time issue. I was happy to see moms with babies and strollers, there is plenty of room there for strollers and there is no worry that kids will be too loud. The atmosphere is of a fast food place with a bit more class and comfort. Like many many other places in Vienna there is a family bathroom....... in the basement. Be prepared to carry everything you need downstairs to the changing station. read more

Absolutely horrible costumer service. In the 10yrs that I have lived in Vienna, I have never felt so unwelcome in a restaurant. Coming from Canada my family tends to speak English with one another, regardless of me still being able to communicate in German perfectly, and the second that they hear you speak English you are treated vastly different.
