It was a very fun way to get food. You get a card and pretty much order anything you want and you return the card back to the server and pay. It reminded me of an arcade rechargeable card haha. There were all kinds of seats and there was a second floor, too. Dad and I shared one pizza together with ham and mushrooms. We were going to order more but to be safe, one dish at a time and good thing we ordered one at a time because this pizza was enough. The pizza was freshly made, it had a thin crust which I loved and it had a light amount of cheese which I liked. They added a good amount of ham and mushroom so each bite you would get all of it. I also got an Austrian soda to go with it and it was nice and refreshing. No AC btw, no longer a surprise but just wanted to let you all know-just in case :) You don't have to bus your spots, btw, there will be people cleaning for you-even though it seems like a bus-your-own place. read more

Vapiano is a fast casual Italian chain restaurant in Vienna where they have multiple locations. The concept is simple - you either order at a kiosk or at the counter and pick up your food once it is cooked and ready. On the menu they have starters, salads, pasta, pizzas, and desserts. They use fresh pasta to make their pastas and you get to choose the sauce and type of pasta you desire. If you do not want to dine in you are also able to do take out or order off delivery apps as well. I stopped by Vapiano on a weeknight to grab some takeout. Service at the counter was friendly and efficient. I ordered a pomodoro pasta using spaghetti and added prawns (4 euros more). I was given a buzzer to notify me of when my food would be ready. The wait for my food took about 5-10 min where I picked up my takeout at a reasonable time. Portion of the pasta was great. They also gave me some Haribo gummies as well as parmesan cheese on the side. Pasta was decent, shrimps were yummy. Taste wise, it was good - what you'd expect from a fast casual Italian place. Nice place to grab a meal when traveling. Easy on pocket and surprisingly delicious food. Pasta tasted very fresh as compared to the ones we get in the US ! Quinoa salad was tasty , they added fresh avocado to it ,with no additional price . Bruschetta was tasty too. Have to order in each item at different counters. The idea of Vapiano's is great, cheap made to order Italian food. We stopped by here for a late dinner as this was directly across the street from our hotel, the Steigenberger. You get a plastic charge card when you arrive and then stand in line at a counter for each item you wish to order. Hopefully you're with someone else who can "guard a table"! The pizza oven cooks were much more interested in visiting with their fellow chefs and friends than cooking pizza. Their noisy rambling conversation with their "friends" went on and on and on..... As a result, our pizza with Burrata Cheese was hastily put together and not fully cooked. The cheese was still slightly cold. Our hair and clothes reeked of grease and garlic when we got back to our room. We sat near the pizza oven area which was the issue, I guess. Think I'll pass on future visits to Vapianos. read more

The food is extremely delicious. It might take time to get your order and food, but I think that it's all worth taking your time, if you can see the chef cook in front of you. Just don't order pizza on a day where the food takes lots of time to be ready or when it's really busy. One time, I waited about an hour or so to get a pizza. The environment was nice. There are a variety of tables to choose from. On each table there are oregano plants and olive oil and chili oil, all for free. Super convenient location with an extensive menu, they mix efficiency with taste well. Fungi pizza was well done - nothing classic but decent cheese and toppings. What we like the most was the serving size are more in line with American than European (if you walk around Vienna for 7 miles, you do work up an appetite). Penne and ravioli - once again nothing classic - but daily decent with fresh tomatoes and basil. Good, clean, quick place to grab food! Was out on a Saturday night during Christmas market season looking for dinner and everyplace was full. I had heard a lot about Vapianos (being an exchange student) so I decided to check it out. When you enter the restaurant you receive a key card. You then can order your meal from either a pasta station, salad station or the pizza station. You swipe your card at the end of ordering and then when leaving the restaurant you hand in your key card and pay the balance. Ordered spaghetti carbonara but since it was so late they were out of spaghetti noodles so I got a linguine type pasta. They heat up all of the ingredients on spot for you. The pasta was surprisingly good! Plus it was very quick to get since you order and they cook it in front of you. Also got an order of bruschetta though and was disappointed with that since they did not toast the bread. If you're looking for a quick and cheap bite to eat, Vapiano's is definitely a place to check out. read more

I see that this is a chain that has multiple location so I hope it is the correct one that I am reviewing. In any event, if they are all similar, the review should be good. We were walking around looking for a restaurant for dinner using the Yelp App and Monicle. As we looked for another restaurant, which turned out to be closed, across the street was Vapiano. We were not looking for Italian as our first dinner in Vienna but decided to go in. It turns out that you take a tray, utensils, etc and a menu and order your food at a counter. Choices included pastas, antipasti, salads, pizzas and more. All are prepared to order for you. You sit anywhere there is an open seat. Don't fear the tray or seating. It was great! The food quality was excellent, service at the counters was excellent and the atmosphere was relaxed and really nice. Nice lighting at the tables and small pots of fresh herbs adorn the table. I went with an antipasti dish called Vitello Tonnato which was roasted veal slices (basically roast beef slices) served around an arugula salad and topped with a cream of tuna sauce and capers. Surprisingly excellent combination. Then a calzone from the pizza menu. Not a calzone as I (a New Yorker) think of a calzone. It was more like a half round (folded over) stuffed pizza filled with mushrooms, ham, pepperoni, tomato sauce and cheese. No riccotta cheese. Very good! So, if you desire good Italian food in a non-stuffy environment, try Vapiano. read more

The food is good, but you have to go during off hours. We made a mistake and went during peak lunch hours and it was packed. None of the tables had spare seats, so we awkwardly ate at the bar. The mixed green salad was just alright. I'm from California so my salad standards might higher than the norm. The pizza was good but the thin crust meant it couldn't hold up it's own weight. Really messy to eat. I wouldn't say it's affordable since L'Osteria had the same pizza at the same price, but was twice the size of Vapiano's. Probably would've given it 4 stars, but that construction is right outside and will continue for months. I couldn't hear my husband and he was sitting right next to me. If you want to stand in line for 20 minutes and be treated terribly by an employee named "Nevin", this is the location for you! This restaurant has a terrible business model, forcing someone from your party to wait in line for an exceptionally long time just for some mediocre pasta. All employees were pleasant enough except for aforementioned Nevin, who treated a member of my party with absolute disrespect when all she tried to do was order bruschetta and salads for our table. I saw the interaction and was appalled at this employees behavior, because nothing happened to instigate it. I had seen this chain in Prague but we gave it a try while in Vienna. It follows sort of a Chipotle fast casual model were your pasta is freshly cooked in front of you and then you pay and seat yourself. The pasta I selected was great and affordable. Vapiano is one of my favourite discoveries whilst living in Vienna. There are a few dotted around Vienna and I have good experiences in the ones I have visited. I really like the concept and the food is fantastic. Once you receive your card at the door, make your way to one of the counters...pizza, pasta, starters and desserts, take a look at the menu and order your food. The chef will cook it in front of you, customising your chosen dish to your flavour preferences, complete with fresh herbs that are picked from the plants before your eyes. Scan your card over the machine at each counter to tot up everything you've spent and pay for it at the front desk on your way out. The restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere and you will find oils and fresh herbs on your table for you to pick and add to your food. The chefs are extremely friendly and professional as well as the other staff. Menus are provided in German and English as standard. The food is very well priced and tastes so good!! read more

This place is a huge hit -- especially among people with families. I don't get what is so appealing about this place, but it's worth it if you happen to be next to one and need to feed a family NOW. Here's the deal: you get a card when you arrive. You then have to visit several stations and select what you want from them: pasta, pizza, salads, drinks, desserts. This is far from convenient, and can take a long time if four people want four different things. Finally, one would think that, for doing all the work, the prices would be slightly cheaper. They aren't. The quality is okay. Not to say that the ingredients aren't fresh and the preparation isn't on-demand. There's just no soul and no depth to the food. The pizzas are of the quality that one would be slightly disappointed in if one were in Italy -- dough is flavorless, and a bit "cake-ey" and clearly shows a lack of understanding about what makes a great pizza. The pasta, while freshly-made, is pared with middling sauces in most cases. The salads can be good, though. Service can be good to bad. Last time I was there, the pasta cook was so thoroughly uninterested that he burned the garlic twice. The first time, he tried to pass it off and make my dish anyway, but I refused to let him. The second time, I had to alert him that the garlic was burnt, and he rolled his eyes and tossed the pan halfway across the kitchen in anger. Sorry, dude, I know it was important that you check those SMS-es. The time before that, I took my children to the restroom and, while we were in there, the server took our unfinished food away and tossed it in the trash. I had to argue with the manager to get my money back, but she relented and, eventually, was actually quite nice about it. Finally, for a family-friendly place, some of the locations only have bar stools at the tables. Have you ever tried to eat with a two or three year old in a bar stool? Let's just say that injuries and a trip to the hospital might be in order if you're not careful. What I really like about this place, though, is the continuous kitchen from opening to close. As a person with young children, I find it pleasantly convenient when restaurants avoid shuttering between lunch and dinner so that people can feed their shouting, annoying children during the lull time and be out of the restaurant's hair for the main service ;-) read more

Vapiano is great for a quick and fresh meal. We were staying at the Herrenhof next door and walked past Vapiano everyday of our stay. Each time we walked by it was busy inside and out. The concept was new for me. As soon as you walk in you get a "credit card" and when you order something you swipe it with the chef. They give you your food and you find your own seat. Eat the delicious food. Then head to the register and pay. It's a really easy process for paying. I had a caprese salad and pizza. They pick the basil from potted plants and the mozzarella is really fresh. I was happy with both choices I made. read more

The food is so fresh that the cooks pluck herbs right off the plants to add to your food as you watch. Great pizzas (the quattro formaggi with sun-dried tomatoes is probably my favorite), decent pasta dishes, tasty desserts (especially the panna cotta with strawberry sauce) -- all at wallet-friendly prices. The branch on Herrengasse is particularly conveniently located -- as soon as you exit the metro, the restaurant is right there. It was a great place in the beginning when it first came out in Vienna and eventually spread all over Vienna. For the price you pay not really worth... you are actually just eating the pizza like from another pizzeria on in a fancy place with high stools supposed to make it casual. If you are luck the cook is good then the food is taste, if he's in haste or new then its like half cooked. I had one who kept reading the instructions set ... the food was finally done but not so tasty ... it lacked ...something. Me and my friends ordered Pasta from this place and noticed that the portions are getting smaller. They have a huge container for sauce in the middle taking up about 40% of the whole container. Then the portion size is filled only half way. This is a lot smaller than it used to be, or what you can get in the actual restaurant. However, they charge the same. I was so happy to see that Vienna has several Vapiano locations! There's one right by my company's office in Washington, DC and after 3 weeks of central European fare - while yummy - was ready for a culinary change of pace and delighted to find a familiar spot. We ate at 2 different Vapiano locations in Vienna and both were very nice. I personally preferred the one at Walfischgasse 11 (near the Opera house) because of the layout - cozier, more unusual for a Vapiano. As always, the food was excellent, a great deal for the money and everyone spoke English so if you aren't a local, no worries when it comes to ordering. At lunch time, the wait at the pasta counters can take a few minutes, as everything is made to order, so if you can get in before the 1pm lunch rush, you'll have a shorter wait usually. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu, especially as you can customize so much of each dish, if desired. Reliable spot for good food and wine at a very good price - relaxed place to grab lunch or dinner. read more

I love Vapiano. Yes, it is a chain, but it's quite unique. I will spare the details, since it looks like a gal has already posted these details in an earlier review. The location here is great. It's right at the metro station and near the Hofburg Palace and Graben street. Food is always fresh and cooked how you would like it. Prices were great too, and they take credit cards. As with most Vapiano, it's a large place, but can of course fill up at peak times just like any other restaurant. No construction going on when we went. Food does take long to order, but remember that it's cooked fresh in front of you. And don't forget to grab a few free gummy bears on your way out for dessert. read more

I generally refrain from reviewing chain restaurants, especially like Vapiano - a German owned Italian eatery. That said, Vapiano is an exception rather than a rule. Depending on what you eat there, their food is between 3 and 4 stars on the Yelp scale. As a Vapiano regular (speaks volumes about Vienna's Italian restaurant scene, when Vapiano(s) offer some of the best and the freshest Italian cooking in town), here are the highlights: - Pasta - although inconsistent, if your pasta dish is prepared by a properly trained (and somewhat talented) cook, you will get a solid 4 star pasta dish. The pasta is made fresh daily and it makes all the difference in the world. As said, if executed properly - and all Vapiano restaurants are highly inconsistent - you will get a good bowl of pasta. Unfortunately, more often then not, you will observe as a cook ruins your dish by either overcooking the pasta or burning the hell out your bolognese sauce, or adding the butter too early at a high heat and instead emulsifying the sauce, just making it greasy and nasty. I could go on, but to solve that problem pay attention how your pasta dish is being prepared and intervene - tell them not to start cooking pasta at the same time they start cooking the sauce (unless you like an overcooked mush); tell them to lower the heat, add more parmesan, add or refrain from adding an ingredient or two. Most of the time they will comply and you will get a great meal at a very reasonable price. - Pizza - 2.5 stars. If you are an adult, don't eat pizzas there - for kids, it's fine. The dough is not good, it comes out too dry and cardboardy. - Desserts - generally 3 stars. Some are better than others and in good Vapiano tradition - inconsistent. Coffees are good too. You get a card at the entrance that you charge at one of the counters (depending on what you are having). You make your choice among the appetizing dishes of the menu, can customise it (sauces, added ingredients (€) , herbs...), and then admire the chef cook it for you! If you are having one of their delicious pizza (the crust is just per-fect!), you get a bipper that you take with you at your table. A few minutes later it will bip and you can go back to the counter to get your freshly baked pizza! All in all, a quick and tasty meal for a reasonable price. As for the ambiance, I like the modern decoration and its high wood tables and seats. In Summer you can also sit outside in a quiet area. So yes, Vapiano is a channel of Italian restaurants.
