after visiting the Hofburg Palace and the Royal Lipazzan Stallions show, we came out hungry for lunch. It was damn hot and rather than look in a wider area we decided to just eat at the first place we found as we walked towards the underground. L'Osteria was the place and a very lucky find indeed. Part of a larger chain. Big place with an outdoor dining area that was doing booming business in pizza during our visit. Two notes on pizza's here which, we didn't order. One, an amazing number of people, including many women surprisingly, ordered whole pizzas for themselves. The pies were at least 16 inches, a size that we usually see enjoyed by two back home. But no, it was one for each. Maybe a plan to have leftovers, don't know. Also different, the pizza came to the table unsliced. It was up to the diner to knife and fork it any way they chose. Could you have asked staff to assist maybe. Never saw it and it was interesting to see different techniques. With the withering heat, we both chose to eat fairly light. The choice for my DW was a simple tomato and burrata salad with fresh basil and simply dressed with EVOO and fresh cracked black pepper. As with 95% of our orders this trip, the tomatoes were outstanding and it's hard to go wrong with fresh burrata under any circumstances. The dish was perfect. My starter mista salad was excellent just mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumber in a house dressing. dressing was light on flavor but let the vegetables shine through. I chose the risotto funghi-risotto cooked in a white wine, onion, and garlic broth plus two different kinds of mushrooms as my entrée. It's rare I choose to order a dish that doesn't include any animal protein (sorry carnivore here) but this dish turned out to be a great choice for a hot day. delicious flavor profile and risotto cooked perfectly. nary a speck was left behind. service was a bit slow with the number of diners here but not annoyingly. one of the few places we dined in during our trip that brought us a carafe of ice-cold water for no additional charge. very welcome. First of all, when we walked into L'Osteria, there was no host to greet us, which was fine. I approached a server and asked if we could seat ourselves. He curtly said no without offering any further information. We patiently waited for five minutes, giving the staff the benefit of the doubt. The same server eventually came back and asked how many were in our party. We said two, and he told us to wait a moment. He seemed to look for a table but never returned with an update. We continued to stand there until another server finally pointed us to a table. Despite the rough start, we tried to overlook it, assuming they were busy. However, things took a bizarre turn after we had ordered and received our drinks. Our server approached and asked us to move to accommodate a group sitting next to us. We were shocked but stood up unwillingly. Then, unbelievably, the group--who seemed to be friends of the server--changed their minds, and the server told us to return to our original table. I have never been asked to move tables in the middle of a meal, let alone be told to go back to my original table after moving. This was an absurd and humiliating experience. To top it off, when we tried to pay for our food, we couldn't find our server. After waiting and searching, we had to ask another server for help. We then saw that server pull in our server from a smoke break. This was the final straw. Despite the decent food, the service was atrocious. We stopped in for lunch on a busy December Thursday and there was about a 20 minute wait for a table. If you can, try to call ahead for a reservation otherwise be prepared to wait-according to our server it is always pretty busy. We ordered the spicy salami pizza and a Cesar salad and two glasses of wine. The food came out pretty quickly and one pizza and the generous salad was more than we could eat for lunch. Found L'Osteria via Yelp after my friend and I decided we wanted some pizza/Italian for lunch. The place is huge, and looks very clean/new. We were seated by the window so we were able to do some people watching as we sipped on our drinks and waited for or food to arrive. To drink, I think I had something that included aperol and rose, which was very refreshing. For food, I had the margherita pizza, which was almost comically huge. It could have easily been shared between two people and would be enough but somehow, I managed to eat most of it by myself. What can I say, I love pizza! On top of that, their prices are great. I paid about $15 (USD) for that entire pizza + a drink. I'd definitely recommend this spot and will make sure to come back if I ever visit Vienna again. read more

After our tour of the Imperial Palace, it was time to wander the streets of Vienna. We didn't have specific plans for lunch but we were hot and hungry. As most buildings don't have AC, it was priority to find someplace cool with good food. We stumbled on this restaurant. It met our criteria: umbrellas and shrubbery surrounding the shaded tables, delicious smells and happy customers enjoying their meals. This worked for us and we realized this was a good decision. The menus arrived quickly from a very pleasant server. We hadn't planned to have an Italian food on this trip but it was just right. We ordered a pizza, salad and bruscetta. The food arrived a short time later. It was fresh and just what we needed as a morning of touring. It's near the Hofberg Palace, but tucked in a little corner away from crowds. Husband and I went here because we're broke college kids, and the reviews said it's an affordable spot. Wasn't sure at first cause 11 Euros for a pizza seemed pricey, but it's huge! We shared a pizza and were stuffed, and the quality was really superb. It's a nice thin crust with quality toppings, although the slice isn't strong enough to support its own weight so you kinda have to eat with a fork and knife. We also picked this place as our friend is vegetarian. He had the pasta, and really enjoyed it. The wait staff will also give recommendations in English if you're veggie and can't figure out the words on the menu. We had a radler and Almdudler just cause those are the local drinks. I'm not a beer drinker cause it's what I'd imagine piss water would taste like, but radlers are amazing so you must try them. Almdudler is the closest to ginger ale here, but I wasn't a fan. Really awesome Italian place right next to WU-Wien!! Went here hungry with a group of very hungry friends. I ended up having a mixed salad, small bruschetta, and half of a pizza Rustica. Everything was pretty great (and prices were extremely reasonable). Mixed salad was good! I believe it was dressed ever so delicately as to enhance and flavor and moistness of the lettuce, but not to overwhelm with flavor. Oil and vinegar were brought to the table that you could add to taste. The Bruschetta was not the best I have ever had. While the ingredients were fresh, the basil and garlic did not shine on the plate. It also lacked some sort of sauce or dressing to tie everything together. While there was balsamic on the table, I would have preferred something come from the kitchen (balsamic reduction tends to work much better). Pizza Rustica was my first experience with pizza in Vienna. Pizzas in America are much thicker, and when they come with toppings, they come loaded. I have mixed opinions about the pizza being thinner but larger in diameter than pizzas in America. There are definitely upsides and downsides to both. Keep in mind, half a pizza is a very decent sized portion! As for the Rustica pizza, while I would have preferred them to be a little more liberal with the toppings, the pizza was well balanced. Dough, cheese, toppings were all in proportion to each other. My other gripe is that the olives were not pitted. What was I supposed to do, spit out (discreetly or otherwise) the olive pit and place it on my plate, in front of friends? Better yet, what if I was on a romantic date, got this pizza, and took olive pits from my mouth and put them on my plate... real romantic. Other options include the floor, pockets, or swallowing the thing and allowing an olive tree to grow in my intestines :D I also like that if you order a full pizza, as one of my friends did, they will give you wax paper so the pizza does not touch the table when it reaches over the plate. read more

L'Osteria is a German owned chain of Italian eateries. It is a big restaurant with an open kitchen and you will likely get a table even during the busiest season. The food ranges between 3 and 4 stars on the Yelp scale for this restaurant type (think Cheesecake Factory of Italian food), the service is acceptable and the ambiance is nice and warm. The food review is as follows: Pizza - over-sized, (very) thin crust pizza big enough for two people. All things considered, it is a 3.75 star pizza. Pizzas are good value for money - again, considering that you are smack in the middle of downtown Vienna - ranging between 7-12 Euros. Pasta - 3 stars. I had spaghetti bolognese - this is a dish that will basically tell you what kind of Italian restaurant you are dealing with. The pasta was store bought, but at least it was cooked al dente - good! The sauce had more tomatoes (tomato base) than I would have liked, and it had a slightly higher acidity. Other little things - they serve pasta with a side of pre-grated "parmesan" cheese (I suspect that it was actually grana since it lacked the nuttiness of parmesan). The cheese tasted fresh at least, which is a good thing. This is a good place for people with kids or someone looking for a quick, inexpensive, lunch. read more

We were hungry looking and for a sit down meal when we came across this L'Osteria location in central Vienna. We sat at one of the many sidewalk tables, all covered with giant umbrellas trying to avoid the direct sunlight on this hot summer day. Our server came over and immediately took our drink orders and handed us menus. I ordered the "Hawaii" pizza which had shoulder of ham, pineapples and cheese.
