This was the best pizza I've had in a long time. The staff were incredible and very friendly. And the tiramisu was the best I've ever had!

I had such a bad experience at this place that I'm never going back. Their service was unforgivably bad and this included two waiters AND the manager. I had heard good things about this place from friends, so for my birthday, I booked a large table inside the restaurant. I tried to get a table on their huge patio, but they said my group was too big for out there. Fine, whatever, not a major setback. A few of us arrived at dinner first and the waiter took our drink order. When she came by with drinks, half of them were missing. From here on out, we couldn't get decent service for ANYTHING... ALL NIGHT LONG! Not for drinks, not for food, not even to pay the damned check and leave! It took more than 30 minutes and about six tries of getting the waiter's attention before we finally got the rest of our drinks. Then it took forever to order food and just forget about ordering more drinks! The food came out and was delicious, but the service was so slow in taking our order that we had all been sitting there, starving, for several hours! Some people had other plans for later in the evening ad had to scarf down their food before running off. The rest of us ate and tried to order more drinks (this would be only our third round after having been there for at least three hours now). Eventually, we were finished there, but the waiter refused to come over to let us pay. We finally went up to her and asked her to bring the bill by. No luck. Another 20-30 minutes of waiting and we had had enough! We went up to the bar and talked to the manager. Now I understand that sometimes you're understaffed or something gets backed up in the kitchen. Things happen; the important thing is to fix them and apologize to your customers for the inconvenience. That's hospitality and customer service 101. The manager refused to admit that they did anything wrong and, after we wouldn't go away, FINALLY told our waitress to give us the bill. I will never go back there again and I'd caution you if you try it! read more

This is my favorite Italian restaurant in Vienna. Il Sestante won the Marchio Ospitalità Italiana Award for its authentic Italian food, hospitality and using the highest quality of Italian products. The majority of workers here are Italian and will typically greet you and say goodbye to you in their language. I've been to this restaurant several times and treat it like a gift: I only come here on special occasions, or when I want to indulge in excellent pizza. I also bring visitors here, and my mom and sister are huge fans of Il Sestante. Set alongside the corner of Piaristengasse and painted in pastel pink, Il Sestante sits across from the beautiful baroque Maria Treu Church. If it's warm out, you have the option of eating outside in front of this church (it is lovely and I highly recommended it). Let's get to the pizza: Il Sestante's pizza is made from the hand of Italians, with fresh sauce and toppings and put into a wood-fired oven. What comes out of it is nothing short of amazing, and sometimes I can't get enough of their bread stick-like crust (hard on the outside, soft on the inside -- it is so tasty!). My favorite pizza of theirs is the Primavera, made with tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella and cherry tomatoes. So simple, and yet so good! Il Sestante's gnocchi sorrentina is also a favorite of mine: large soft chunks of potato-pasta served in tomato sauce with large dollops of mozzarella cheese in the middle. Delicious. Their pesto spaghetti garnished with pine nuts is not bad either . Additional Notes: A reservation for Friday, Saturday and Sunday are highly recommend. While I don't like writing negative comments about restaurants, I do want to mention the service: it's not perfect. The first time I came here the server forgot to send our food order to the chef, so we waited a long time before I asked him where our food was. Another time my husband received his meal a good 10 minutes before I did, so his food was getting cold and he had to eat without me. These are only two negative instances and in general, the service is usually fine (plus the food makes up for it), but it is important for me to let you all know about this. If there was a way to possibly give this place a minus rating I would!! If you're looking for pizza in Vienna, please don't go here!! There are many many other great places to have pizza In Vienna... I am not VERY picky when it comes to food etc.. but this place was beyond belief!! Unreal.. AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!!!! They staff were rude / complacent / slow / the list goes on... We were 19 people and I would say not a single one of us will ever go back there... unless the world were ending and this was the only place that had food... You definitely need a reservation to get in this joint; why? because it's a local joint and the food is so good, that it is packed every night of the week. The pizza's here are the "best" in Wien; I only say that since as a gluten free chick, I can't really vouch for them personally. What I can vouch for is obviously fresh ingredients and the fact that pizza's get devoured. I've had a couple of different dishes here, the risotto's are always great, the vegetable one is good, the seafood one is better; I also had a salad there recently that was amazing, really HUGE portion of lettuce and greens with shrimp, mozzarella, corn, onions, olives and other fresh veggies. Called last night to get four pizza's to go (no delivery, when I asked about 10 days prior the guy did the dance of no delivery and reminded me that no, they would not eat green eggs and ham. so he didn't say that exactly, but he did dance) and the pies were ready in 20 minutes . They were piping hot and you could smell the garlic which was amazing. Poor taxi driver was probably hungry once he dropped me off at my destination, hopefully he went back to Il Sestante. This is worth the trek to the 8th district. If it is inconvenient call it an adventure. If it is close by, call yourself lucky. Just make sure you call. And get a reservation. If I had written my review before the most recent visit, this score would be higher. However, I made the mistake of ordering pasta. It seems that most Italian restaurants I've tried in Vienna are really pizza places with a few simple and overpriced pasta dished that feel like dry store-bought pasta with pesto/sauce from a jar. It felt assembled, and not cooked. However, I've had pizza here many times and it was amazing. Their outdoor seating in the courtyard is worth a visit on a lazy summer afternoon. If this was a pizza-only restaurant I would give it 5 stars. read more

One of the best Pizza's in Town. Most of the time very busy but you can't get more Italian culinary experience than this. The Antipasti Starter plate is ok but where the chef really shines is with Pizzas and Pastas. All of them are great! Walk in, weren't greeted for 15 minutes. Watched as the bartender "cleaned" wine glasses with his hands and then "dried" them with his sweat-soaked shirt. Then, a waiter gave us menus and we asked for English. He says IN PERFECT English with attitude, "We don't have English. We're not used to tourists but we will see what we can DO." I'm sorry, but our hotel sent us here. You're in the service industry. You are speaking perfect English! To all of you American "tourists" out there, don't bother with this place. They are blatantly disrespectful to people, are blatantly unhygienic in their back-of-the-house cleaning practices, and you can find a place more welcoming anywhere around town. Amazing Italian food in Vienna! We loved it so much that after lunch we booked a reservation for dinner that same evening! The staff is great, the atmosphere is casual and comfortable, and most importantly the food was terrific. We had two wood burning pizzas and pasta, also delicious prosciutto with melon! Well, where do I start....We had reservations (made a week before) for 20 people for my boyfriend's birthday i.e. they knew there was a big group so they should have been prepared. We had asked to sit outside, given the weather, but they said we had to stay inside. I think the best way to explain this is to do a little timeline, so you can see how ridiculous the WHOLE night was: 7.30pm - arrival 7.45pm - we ask for menus 8.00pm - we ask for menus and ask her to take a drinks order 8.10pm - we ask for menus and ask her to take a drinks order 8.15pm - she takes a drinks order and gives menus, 45 minutes after we sat down. 8.30pm - we get half of our drinks. 9.00pm - the other half of the drinks arrive after asking another waiter where they are (so that's a full round of drinks 1.5 hours after we sat down, no food order taken yet) 9.15pm - jugs of water arrive for those drinking tap water (it was 30 degrees of so, everyone was super dehydrated and we had waited 1 hour 45 minutes for water). 9.30pm - me and my friend speak to the manager to tell him we'd been here 2 hours and had still not ordered food 9.40pm - the waitress comes over and takes a food order. No apology or anything (bearing in mind ALL the tables around us have had 5* service and even those who came in later are eating food). 10.10pm (or around that) - the food arrives. 2 hours 40 minutes after we sat down 11.00pm - we ask for the bill 11.10pm - we ask for the bill 11.20pm - we ask for the bill 11.25pm - we consider walking out and not even paying because we are so irate. Then realise we are too nice and we will just leave the money and go. But wait, we don't want to leave a tip...we want our change! 11.30pm - we all go to the bar and request the bill again. We all wait, crowding round the bar getting furious until they give us the bill. No apology again. We leave the exact amount and leave. Absolutely ridiculous. I am actually angry again thinking about it. The saddest thing about it is that the food is amazing. Thumbs up to the chefs (they get the one star). Thumbs down to the rude, ignorant waitress. We would have just left but where can you go with 20 people without a reservation?? So we had no choice but to stay. We thought maybe it's because we were all speaking in English (mixed expat group + Austrians and Germans) but no, we spoke to her and the manager in German so it can't have been that. To be honest there is no excuse for such rudeness. I will never eat here again, neither will the other 19 people at the table. read more

I was told Il Sestante was the best Italian restaurant in Vienna and now I have the facts... It's outstanding!! Being an Italian restaurant had to taste the pizza and it really knocked my socks off. The best pizza I have tasted in Vienna! The Diablo pizza was really spicy (none of that weak local chili) and it came with real Italian sausage. It's the real deal people. The waiters (Italian) were all friendly and spoke multiple languages. I was really impressed and will definitely return to taste the other meals. read more

This place was first recommended to me by my Italian Italian teacher (that is, a person from Italy to taught Italian) as the "best authentic southern Italian pizza in Vienna." With that recommendation, I gave it a try even though getting there required 2 different streetcars and a bus (sigh) -- and was immediately hooked. The reason? LUIGI, the pizza chef. This guy should be given stock in the restaurant, because he is its beating heart. Not only does he make the best pizza in Vienna (and rest assured, he works 7 days a week, so you'll most likely find him there whenever you go), but he is also friendly, loves children, and gets to know many of his regulars by name. The tomato soup is also amazing -- thick and full of fresh tomatoes, but not overtly "creamy" (as in, they don't thicken it by dumping in cream at the end). The "torta della nonna" is indescribable, but here goes: it melts in your mouth the way powdered sugar does, but is also creamy. A bit of pinon. I love it. Tiramisu also excellent, but I can never get two desserts and I can't possibly NOT order the torta della nonna. All the pizzas are amazing, but try especially the Neapolitan pizzas with fresh mozzarella... They've got a large and very pleasant "gastgarten" (patio dining) across the street in the church square -- watch out -- there's is kittycorner from the restaurant. You'll figure it out when you're there. If you want to sit outside and the weather forecast is good, call ahead to reserve a table (same day reservations usually work). read more

Don't know if she didn't like my lack of German fluency, kids or that I'm not white but it was uncomfortable and she kept the change from me paying and refused to give me the change, kept it as a tip that I never would have given since she was so cold. Pizza in Vienna cont'd: overall: 6.5 (doesnt make it to my Vienna top 3). This place has some of the worst/slowest service of the pizza places I've been. Maybe I got spoilt in the US but still...Overall, the pizza is good. Good flour, cooked about right, the crust is not too gummy, tomatoes are not San Marzano but ok, the buffalo mozzarella isnt top but ok, the prosciutto also isnt top (not 24mo seasoned) but ok, basil is fresh. Advice: dont seat at the tables near the windows if u dont want the mosquitos to eat u and your pizza. read more

Food is mediocre, but acceptable. Service here is unacceptable. One of the worst I have ever experienced. Servers drinking wine on the job, ignoring requests, and making excuses for long wait times. We waited for 25 minutes for just a pudding, and when we asked the server where our food was, he told us in a patronizing voice that we have only waited for 7 minutes. We sat outside on the beautiful plaza across from the restaurant on a warm June evening. They were fully booked when we arrived just after 5 and we didn't have reservations. After a few minutes the charming (or handsome per my wife) host got us seated for drinks with a short wait for dinner service. Our group of four had beer, wine and shared two fabulous pizzas. The crust was as good as it gets and the ingredients were fresh. If you arrive between 5-7 pm, you will definitely need a reservation. Great waitstaff. The host/manager was the best. read more

We dined here on Oct. 12th a party of four people at 6:30 pm. The friendly waiter was funny and made very nice conversations with us. I had the lasagna, another person a vegetarian dish, another spaghetti carbonara, another a small pizza. Each of our meals was delicious! Il Sestante is probably the best pizza restaurant in Vienna. They are true italians, the personell is friendly and the place has that typical italian feeling. The place looks communicative and open-minded. No feeling of "we and our customers are cool and rich!", but rather that way that you find in italy too: great quality, combined with a certain openness and no arrogance at all. The pizzas have great ingredients, and the connoisseur will taste it. You cannot compare them to the most of the pizzas that you can eat in town. They are simply... perfect. And also affordable! In summertime, the terrace in front of the famous Piaristenkirche, one of the most beautiful places of baroque Vienna (architect: Lukas von Hildebrandt) is a beautiful place to sit and take your time, and get good italian food. read more

I had a good experience here overall. very tasty meal for a very hungry lone traveler. Without a reservation I waited for a table for about 10 minutes on a busy Friday night at about 9:00 PM. Service was friendly if a little on the slow side. Ordered a glass of wine, and a caprese salad, which was fresh, very tasty and simple. This pretty much sums up the beauty of Italian food. Get great, simple ingredients, as fresh as possible and don't overboil the pasta. Had a penne pasta with sausage (salsiccia) which was in a simple al oglio sauce with verily lightly sauted onions that were sweet and a nice addition to the dish- tons of flavor and perfectly al dente pasta. Dessert was a little disappointing. A Cannoli that I could have purchased from my local grocers frozen food aisle, but on the other hand it was HUGE. Took a while to get the cannoli and by the time it arrived my cappuccino was all done. I wish they took credit cards, but like so many places in Viennna they do not, so be prepared to use cash. Why not four stars? I think four stars should be reserved for faster service and more attentive waiters. Mine was nice, but had to hustle for a busy dining room, and I was "just one". For me three stars indicates a place I would go back to with friends. Four would be a place I told everybody they HAVE to try, and five would be something that blew my socks off with everything a restaurant should have. read more

In summer book your table outside: the court is beautiful in front of a typical barok church Maria Treu and it's related school... Inside take care it is really noisy. If you are lucky you will get a charming Italian waitress/waiter... Otherwise see underneath! For the pizza and the environment in summer 4,5....but all in all only 3. read more
