The Caesar salad not the meal size was plenty to share as I also wanted pasta so I got an Arriabiata -good and spicy with freshly grated cheese! Believe me I think I ate too much but for the windy, chilly spring day it was perfect before heading out to walk the city! Having been impressed by Vapiano last year, during my trip to Berlin, I wanted to try it out again while in Amsterdam, luckily not far away from Central Station is this branch of Vapiano. The gluten-free range at Vapiano has impressed me in the past, sadly this isn't something that is offered in my home country, the UK so I was pleased to find out that like Vapiano in Germany, The Netherlands branches of the chain also offer this. The gluten free selection in terms of pizzas was quite limited, I ended up opting for the Tuna and Sweetcorn pizza, although it did take quite a while to cook, when it was served the pizza was good quality and matched my high expectations from previous visits in Berlin, the base was thin and crispy and probably one of the best gluten-free pizzas I've had, with the exception being my time in Rome. The staff here seemed friendly enough, and they did eventually help remove someone who appeared to be stalking me from the streets of Amsterdam, into this restaurant which was quite a frightening, strange ordeal. In terms of gluten-free selection other than pizza and pasta, this place didn't offer much which was a shame, as I struggled to get a decent side to go with my meal. The seating was mostly high, bar style seating but there were some regular style seating, including one with an awesome view of the canal and Amsterdam being right next to the staircase, overlooking the entrance. This is in many regards your pretty much average Vapiano served, good quality food served on the upper floor after entering the lift or staircase, with you were given a card where you can go to different stations (pasta, pizza, the bar) etc and pay for it upon leaving, and warrants a solid three-star rating, as despite some negatives it did help me start off my trip to Amsterdam with a good evening meal! Some reasons holding this back is the failure of this branch of Vapiano to create its own, personal identity compared to other branches, simply being another average branch of Vapiano and the issues with gluten-free selection and the seating, and other minor issues discussed. read more

Needed something quick and close to my hotel, and I was fond of my local Vapiano when I lived in the DC area so I made the bad decision to give this one a try. At 2 pm on a Wednesday with about 25% capacity, it took 45 minutes to bring me my simple pasta dish. Can't even imagine what it's like when it's busy. Additionally, I had requested the vegan cream be used in my dish, at an additional charge as is offered on the digital menu. The cream was definitely not vegan, although I didn't realize it until it's too late. Some of us who order vegan items actually can't eat the dairy version, and it isn't simply a preference. Shame on you all, I will now suffer for the rest of the day. If you're reading this, just pick another restaurant, please. read more

At the bottom of the public library.... they have a huge terrace which is 100% in the sun until late... if the weather is nice. Not 4 stars because the quality of the Pizza, which is the main thing they serve, is okish... kind of industrial one... thin crust but not too thin... and it is not even too cheap. I really do not like the idea of the card.... you basically pay at the end, paying what the waiter is charging to your card.... and if you loose it.... WOOOO... you got to pay as if you ate the whole menu... not so smart. A lot of the previous reviews site the fact that when crowded, Vapiano's can be... well less than enjoyable. I think their 'system' (if you want to call it that) with the cards is really ridiculous and explains why the place gets so cramped up. I'm not sure what the issue is with getting your food and then paying via a cash register and then eating your food. I've also found the employees there a bit surly and overall don't love the business model. The food is ok and the pizza is better than the pizza places that have pre-made pizza sitting in a window but it's nothing to write home about. I'd describe Vapiano as "a restaurant where you can enjoy pizza and pasta at decent prices with comfortable atmosphere and great view". At this restaurant, although it is located right near Amsterdam central station (10-15 minutes by foot), I found the area around the restaurant not too busy. Unlike many restaurants in other parts of Amsterdam that are located in narrow alleys, Vapiano not only has quite large space inside building, but it also has decent size outer terrace where you can enjoy drinks in front of canal. Vapiano is located right next to the public library of Amsterdam, which is often known as Oba among Dutch people, so if you are a student and get hungry after studying hard at the library, you may visit Vapiano to enjoy some Italian cuisines. When it comes to the menu, basically, they serve antipasti, salads, pizzas and pastas. For pizzas, there are 17 different kinds, and they are categorized into 4 different groups depending on prices. For example, Group A consists of Margherita, Salami and Pesto con spinach, and whichever you choose, it will cost you 6 euro. Pizzas in Group D are the most expensive pizzas in Vapiano and they cost 9 euro. I'd say it's not very cheap, but considering the fact that prices in general are quite expensive in Amsterdam, I think they are decent. However, I'd like to point out a number of downsides that I found after I visited Vapiano several times. First, you might find the restaurant quite noisy, presumably because there is a bar inside the restaurant. If you don't mind this, it wouldn't be a matter, but if you do mind eating food in a bit noisy place, it could bother you. Also, usually, the restaurant is almost full, so sometimes, it can be difficult for you to find available tables, especially if you come with some other friends. Last, because there are normally many people, it might take you a while until you receive your food. I have been here before, never really appreciated the uninspired staff. I think I've only seen the hosts smile... But dang! I do love the smell and taste of the pasta dishes. (Although right now something is burning from the smell of it...) Tonight i ordered the risotto with scampi & spinache, and the guy looked worried. Is it because he'll forget about the spinache? Because he did... :-/ The risotto is not as exciting as i hoped it would be, would have loved some extra parmesan, the spring onion could have been less crispy, a lot of scampi (yeah not complaining!) and the rice was not too bad. All in all a nice alternative for their standard pasta, but if i have to choose, pasta it is. What's nice about Vapiano is that the portions are just right, not too little and not too much. I only go here if i visited the Central Library, and when I used to work close by. Throughout the day there are a lot of students from the conservatory next door but at this time, 10ish in the PM it's quite pleasant. We actually ended up here because we weren't able to get in somewhere else, but the food was good, so no complaints there! It's a weird kind of system with how you order/pay. So when you walk in, you get a card (don't lose it!), when you go upstairs and order, you wave the card and it basically keeps track of what you order. It's how you order that I wasn't happy with. It's kind of cafeteria style, you go up to an area (either pasta or pizza) and order, but the line was long, and I stood in line for 10 minutes (only 3 people in front of me) before I could even order. There were other lines/chef areas but they weren't staffed. Once those were staffed, it moved more quickly. They make your dish while you wait and watch them. The food itself was very good and I was happy with the portion-size and price. I think the first time here is very confusing. I might go back to try it again. read more

As with other vapiano restaurants the food here is very good and the prices are good value. The problem is the slow service. I went here with a friend on a Saturday evening around 7 and had to wait around a half hour in line just to order my pizza and another 20 mins to receive it. My friend had to wait even longer in line as she wanted pasta instead. However, the food and prices are very good, so if you don't mind a bit of a wait I would recommend this branch of vapiano. read more

I've never been a big fan of Vapiano, but this one has really taken the biscuit today! Arrived at 12, lunchtime.. wanted pizza.. no pizza man. I waited 5 minutes, still no one who seemed to care. The pasta man came to help, but someone (probably the restaurant "manager") told him to just take my order and give me a buzzer. I had extra wishes, so I waited for Pizza man. Waited for 10 more minutes, the line got longer, still no one. After almost 20 minutes of waiting (my companion had already finished his pasta) we left the building - still hungry and out of time!! Nice Italian casual restaurant chain from Germany. This particular location is near the water, not too far from the Central train station in Amsterdam. They offer every diner a RFID chip card, which when you go up to the different stations, they have a pizza station and a pasta station, you wave your card in front of a pay kiosk and then they charge your card for the food you ordered and then when your done eating you bring your card to the register and it shows the amount charged to the card. They also offer free wifi at this location too, which is nice. There is another location in Amsterdam and also some other locations in the Netherlands. I can't believe I lived in close proximity to this restaurant and never toke advantage of the location. As I was waiting on the library to open I decided to stop in for a drink. What I adored about this restaurant was the terrace. They have a wonderful landscape view that gives you an inviting glimpse of the harbor. You can relax on the terrace with a cup of cappuccino and zoom in on one of the most historical places in Amsterdam. Vapiano is a great place to stop for lunch and admire this enlightening city. Historically this harbor was the center of attention for trade between the 1600-1700. Much of the Dutch prosperity was contributed to the (Dutch East Indies Company). Across from Vapiano you can get an astonishing view of where the center of the trade toke place in Amsterdam. The character of Amsterdam port has changed remarkably on the architectural side. In this location you will see a great transformation between historical and the rise of contemporary developments. read more

It's pretty much your standard Vapiano - decent pizza and pasta for a decent price. I basically used to live here when I studied next door at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. The card system can be a bit confusing, as you can't order everything all at one station. You have to go to a different station for pasta or pizza, salads, and coffee/dessert. read more

This location is really hit or miss. As others have said, the staff here is generally uninspired. On a recent visit, they closed the kitchen here more than 10 minutes before the listed time (the restaurant was set to close more than an hour later), so our food was cooked over someone mopping the floor - with music blasting from a dish washing room next to the kitchen. The bartender used her finger to scratch something off a dirty glass after she'd poured the drink...proost! On our visit tonight, we were served blackened (burned) pine nuts in our pasta...ick. One of my favorite spots in Amsterdam for good, reasonably priced food...But you have to know how to play the game. Tables are gold in this restaurant, so either get there early or late, and enjoy the wine while waiting for your food. There's a bit of luck involved in ordering food and having it served at the same time, but if you order pizzas they're easy to share while you wait. Gah! The service here is so slow! I was there at 3-4pm on a Saturday and they had 2 chefs making pasta - The queue was huge and you had to stand and wait FOREVER just to get to the front . OK Vapiano is a hot mess of a restaurant. Food is good enough for 3 stars, but I digress. You are in line as soon as you walk in the door to get a card which serves as the record of the food you order when you go upstairs. I went Saturday at 6:30 and the place was packed. Problem is that you have to wait in a line for drinks, a line for pasta, a line for pizza, a line for salads: you get the picture. A lot of queing and requeing. Note to English speakers: there is no English menu here, only Dutch menus even though it is within a five minute walk of Centraal Station. People piled en mass in hordes in front of the pasta and pizza makers. I went for the shorter pizza line, but even there, I was just standing waiting endlessly, while non-customer oriented servers / food preparers were trying to catch up with what was already ordered and could not help translate the menu. The place you order is the place you also pick-up when the food is ready and your pager beeps. Then you have to come back through the horde to pick up your food, along with a tray silverware and napkins. You have to pick up each food item separately from it's respective station. So service here is not customer oriented at all one bit. Seating is at cramped hightops sharing with whomever else squeezes in. Food was good. My pizza with pesto, shrimp, marinated tomatoes and a half bag of raw spinach on top was tasty. Crust was alternately chewy and crunchy and it was altogether quite enjoyable. Salad was also quite good with the creamy arugula (rocket) mustard dressing. I might have tried other items if I could understand the menu. Definitely not a place to go if you want to have a conversation because you are up and down several times ordering and then picking up food. Maybe not so bad on a slow night, but Vapiano is a victim of it's success. It needs more help; that's for sure. Leaving this weird hybrid of a quick serve restaurant, you have to wait in another line to check out and pay. Of course their sophisticated system charged me for an extra pizza so I had to wait until they backed out the transaction etc as the line behind me up the stairs to check out and pay grew longer. Not really my kind of place. First time there and the whole line up and watch them prepare thing didn't appeal to me. Also crowded and on the noisy side. Having said that, the chef was attentive and made a couple of ingredient suggestions that worked out well. All in all the food was decent but not remarkable. A cut above fast food certainly. Had the spaghetti Carbonara and my dining companions the Basil Pesto linguini and Bolognese penne. No complaints but no high praise. Prices are reasonable. We come here for lunch since it's close to the office. Sometimes the pasta queue is quite long, so that's a bit annoying if you're on a lunch break. The food itself is pretty average, sometimes good. They have a few tasty sauces, but it isn't very authentic Italian. I usually go for the salads. They are definitely overpriced for what you get. You either get a small salad with hardly anything on it or a huge salad with lots of things on it. The freshness is pretty good and the bread that comes with it not bad, but a small option for lunch that still has a good amount of toppings would be nice. The concept is ok- you have to go order pizza, salad, or pasta in que and swipe a card that tracks your purchases and then pay as leaving. The problem was the pasta line. there was no queuing. was no one directing people how to stand in que. My family ordered and salad and pizza while I was still in line trying to get pasta. There were 4 pasta stations, but it was mismanaged and just needed to have better assembly. i gave up on the pasta and ordered a salad. I had it eaten before the person in line at pasta had finally ordered. read more
