Van came out and installed an ironing board cabinet in our laundry room. I thought this was going to be a simple project, but it turned out not to be. Before he started the installation he cut small holes in our wall to see what was going on. I've had people do installations where they cut first and look later resulting in many unnecessary holes requiring repair. Turns out, installing the cabinet required rerouting some electrical cords which he did correctly and to code. We also had an issue with our stairs being in the way which he took care of. He did a good, quality job and I would definitely use him again. read more

I called to set up an appointment Friday afternoon for Monday during lunch. When it was time for the appointment no one showed up. Van told was 'distracted' on Friday and didn't write it down properly. I waited for him to come and give me an estimate and I was told I would receive a quote sent to me via email. Found Van on Yelp and called him after reading so many great reviews. He was great - got here when he said he would and figured out why my disposal wasn't working in about five minutes. I had a couple more things I wanted him to look at to see if they needed replacing and to get a quote if they did. He got my upstairs faucet working great, so no need to replace. He also gave me a quote/time frame on my leaky shower faucet (which was in much need to being replaced/updated!) I decided to have him replace it and he went out to buy parts, came back and had it working soon after. He also tightened up my jiggly toilet in about five minutes on his way out! I'm always wary of work like this since it can balloon quickly in price and scope... He did a great job in the time frame he quoted - no surprises. I hired Van on the referral of a kitchen cabinet company and he seemed honest and fair. Unfortunately I have had a couple issues with his sub contractors, the first issue was with the floating and texturing of the ceiling, you could totally see where the old fluorescent light boxes were plus the rest of the ceiling looked bad. When I told Van he said ceilings were never perfect and that there's always some unevenness (ok I get that, but it was bad) so I asked him to come over and see for himself, he did and agreed it needed to be redone. When the sub came back he tried telling me I just wanted the ceiling to look better than it was (old homeowners scraped off popcorn ceiling and did a bad job of it). What I actually told him was to make it the same texture as the walls. Ok, so the second time around went well. Now, for the second issue, first let me say that I had put off the installation of the bamboo flooring because I hadn't found exactly what I wanted, plus I was waiting til I could pay for it without having to finance anything. I had the flooring for a couple weeks when Van called while I was on a trip (I'm a flight attendant and out of town often, he was really pushing me to get the job done because his wife was due in a month and he wanted to close out the job. I wasn't too keen on having any work done while I was gone, but he assured me it would be fine. I had purchased floor glue thru the same company that I purchased the floors and told Van that the company said to lay it down thick, which is why there were four 5gallon buckets to cover the job. I get home and the floor looks beautiful, but there are two 5 gallon buckets left over. In the next day's my floor is moving and doesn't seem glued down in one of the halls, so I let Van know, he calls the sub contractors who come out and tell me it's the glue, that they would never have used the glue that was provided and I was sold bad glue. Wait, what? You would never have used it if you weren't told to? Was this information given to my contractor or me? And, even tho he admitted NOT EVEN READING THE LABLE on glue he wasn't familiar with he went ahead and put it down the way he normally does with the glue he provides. Huh, that's interesting, if your unfamiliar with a product you've never seen before wouldn't it be a wise idea to read the label?? While he was there I found another spot that needed fixing, they only had time for the one spot so I had them come back later. It got fixed the other day, but I was informed they would not be coming back to fix anymore areas as they only warranty the floor as long as their glue was used, FIRST IVE HEARD THAT!! I called Van to let him know what was going on and he also blamed the glue! Lots of finger pointing going on, no on taking responsibility, very unprofessional behavior on both their parts! Well, now there are more spots that pop and click when I walk over them with some movement to them...I'm hoping they don't start popping up on me as I've been abandoned by my contractor and his sub contractors! My advice? Ask a thousand questions before you have anything done, and be there when it's being done. Another thing, he estimated 270 ft. Of baseboards, when I measured it was only 165ft, he told me that was a base price, uh ok, put that in writing as "base" price. But, why charge me $30 more to do laundry and bath when it still didn't come to 270 linear feet?? Since we are trying to sell our house, we didn't want to spend a lot of money. Van came with his highly personable and professional crew and did a phenomenal job for a reasonable and fair price (comparable to Lowes, but with the security of knowing who is going to show up.) They replaced our front doors to install a steel door and storm door, replaced our patio sliding door, rerouted some electric cords and repaired drywall for us. All of it turned out beautiful. These guys are meticulous, neat, and are flexible when scheduling. We were especially impressed with the care they took with the patio door. The framing makes it look expensive. The only downside is that now the rest of our house needs some updates to match the new work! Having used a lot of contractors, it was refreshing to have a crew that communicated effectively. Hired Van to fix the sinking roof of my deck. He and an assistant propped up the roof then installed new posts on new concrete with steel footers. Decent price and I'm happy with the results. read more
