I tried it after an audition since I was hungry, it was right across the street from where I did the audition and had some time to kill. I had a dish that sounded really promising (the chicken mozzarella patstrino, otherwise known as a croissant wrap) but the execution wasn't quite what I expected. Staff was friendly, I did find seating on a late Saturday afternoon and the Gorilla Mocha Chilla was good but items here are definitely PRICEY. I'd passed the other location a bunch of times and even had a job interview at that one but had never tried the food beforehand so maybe the experience is different there as it is a bigger space than this location. I'm glad I tried it but I think if I went back I'd get something different (maybe the iced chocolate). I wouldn't make a special trip to come here but it's serviceable and I do like the name alone. Also no bathroom here but the nearby hotel does have one and they were nice enough to let me use their ladies room. read more

Great breakfast sandwiches! Ordered the breakfast pastrino and ultimate breakfast sandwich on ciabatta bread and they were both very good! The pickles (dill) had the perfect crunch! So good! My only regret was not asking for a couple more pickles. Did not try the coffee since we had coffee somewhere else before. I got a to-go coffee and wrap here and had a great experience! This coffee shop is right in the heart of Midtown. There are a few tables but not lots of room to sit. I would suggest doing a grab and go situation. The barista was very nice and thorough when taking my order. I had an iced latte and a chicken pesto pastrino. I have never had a pastrino, but it was essentially a wrap made of very thin croissant dough. I LOVED the wrap. It was super flavorful and almost had a salty/sweet combo? I'm obsessed and will be ordering again. The coffee was good, but not great. I wouldn't go out of my way to get coffee here, but I will be getting their wraps again and again! read more

Coffee is great. Vanilla Latte is not overly sweet, but smooth to drink. Coffee isn't too strong or burned beans. Both hot and iced vanilla latte is very good. The iced vanilla latte is much easily a faster to drink only because it's cold, but hot coffee just needs to cool a bit and becomes drinkable. Service is great. Staff are very nice, and listen well to the order. Place is roomy and can sit probably 20 people or so. The location is very, very clean and very close to 37th and 8th, nearby a few hotels in the midtown area. read more

I must note the amazing barista who was working, a gentleman had abruptly entered the store in a very unpleasant tone asking for food. Grabbing a quick morning pick-me-up before jumping on the train at Penn Station, I decided to try Vanilla Gorilla Café. I opted for an iced oat milk hazelnut and honey latte. The service was fast and surprisingly friendly. My latte came out quick and was the perfect level of sweetness without being overpowering. It was cool and creamy, and the hazelnut flavor was subtle. It definitely served its purpose and I can see why this coffee shop is so successful. Unfortunately, I had already eaten for the morning, but many of their breakfast items did look quite tasty. One of the best things about this place on this very busy Sunday morning -- in an area where three very popular bagel shops nearby are absolutely slammed -- is that it is peaceful, there are places to sit, good lighting, good soft music ... and I loved my Hazelnut & Honey Latte. AND they let me eat my Harry's bagel here with my latte (Harry's is across the street and bagels are excellent but there's practically no place to sit). Being at Vanilla Gorilla calmed my nerves! read more

This comes in contrast w the overall meh midtown neighborhood which is admittedly the worst parts of midtown. If your hotel is near - that's a great spot to get the first meal of the day. If your work is near - that's a cool morning addition to your routine. Prices are standard midtown prices. Stuff was very direct and upbeat informative and fast. Everything looked very well organized. Not Starbucks vibe which was great to see. I don't get the connection of "pastrino" with a gorilla branding but I would welcome the idea of protein or health food offering in the menu to align w name and branding. They have a great selection of coffees and beverages and a very clear menu display. The place is busy in the morning. But doesn't get uncomfortably crowded. Vanilla Gorilla Cafe's "pastrino" is pretty good but quite frankly I don't prefer this because it is a bit tougher/chewier versus the typical melt in your mouth deliciousness of a traditional croissant. I do like the combinations they've conjured up for fillings but for the price you can find much better options- I rounded up to 3 stars as their coffee is pretty good. read more

Came to this spot for a quick breakfast on my way to the office and I was disappointed. The pictures and reviews gave me hope but it did not live up to my expectations. I did like that you could turn the breakfast bagel into the breakfast wrap but it just wasn't hot enough and it wasn't very memorable. Additionally, my cappuccinos was all foam. Wanting to escape the throng of people walking down 8th St, and needing to stop somewhere to rest our feet and grab a bite to eat, my wife spotted this Vanilla Gorilla Cafe location on a corner, right next to a Hilton Doubletree Hotel. She was drawn by the cute gorilla mascot logo, and I'm glad she choose this location. Walking in at around 12:30 in the afternoon, the interior was completely devoid of any other patrons. There are several tables available inside to sit at. And due to the lack of any other customers, we had our choice of seating in the small, yet very clean and inviting interior. Service here is very friendly, and they certainly did not have any shortage of staff working behind the counter. Jhanela rang us up and prepared our food and drinks. We genuinely appreciated her kindness and patient demeanor, which was quite the stark contrast to the typical New Yorker gruffness we've gotten accustomed to experiencing in NYC. We ordered some coffee, a Nutella cookie, and a toasted Poseidon Tuna Sandwich. I felt the tuna sandwich to be pretty average and not really worth the $10.95 price tag. But the Nutella cookie was 100% the highlight of our lunch! It was served warm, and was filled with gooey, delicious Nutella on the inside. It was pretty sizeable too, and I was able to share half of it with my wife. At $3.50/cookie, it was not only more delicious, but definitely a better value than Levain Bakery's famous chocolate chip cookie at $5 a piece. Vanilla Gorilla was a really nice, quiet break from the fast-paced environment outside. And perfectly located for some people watching outside. Definitely a welcomed, albeit brief respite for our lunch. read more

A decent place for a carryout breakfast is on 8th Ave near PABT and next to Angelina Bakery. The "Pastrino" is the special must-get here, food-wise. it's a wrap made from croissant dough. It's tasty and a bit flaky but has more dough than a regular croissant and flatten down.
