We decided to try somewhere new (for two out of three of us) and were happy we did. A cute place with very nice and friendly staff. I decided on the steak sandwich and can see why they give you gloves - very juicy and hot. It was tasty and a unique twist on a steak sandwich in the steak sandwich capital of the world :0) My sister enjoyed her beef stroganoff, as well. My niece liked her turkey panini, but we all agreed it was more of a sandwich than a panini - it wasn't pressed nor heated. My sister also enjoyed her mushroom soup. I love this place! It's cute and ideal for brunch or a light lunch. Their borscht tastes so close to how my mom makes it. The teas are amazing, especially the buckthorn which has become my favorite. I don't usually go for waffles, but I decided to try the Shaffel waffle one day when I was craving something sweet, and it did not disappoint. The only time I was ever a little disappointed was when I ordered the shakshuka. It was delicious, but I felt like it needed much more bread on the side since a dish like that is meant for plenty of dipping. We absolutely loved our lunch today! What a pretty little place with every table filled throughout our stay. The owner introduced herself to us, and we had a nice chat. She also owns Ginger, a nearby restaurant, which we will definitely try. We chose to drink water served in a lovely bottle with fresh mint and poured into footed glasses. We decided on the avocado salad and a veggie omelet to share. It was the perfect combination! Fresh arugula with smoked salmon, tomatoes, and avocado plated with the avocado shell as if the salad was tumbling from the shell. It was so fresh and delicious! The veggie omelet was absolutely delicious, but I can't describe why and how this was different than most omelets. It just was! Desserts are fabulous, and the owner helped us choose. I had a Mikado cake and my friend had a vanilla mouse filled with mango. Delicious! She took home an entire box of desserts for her family. Vanilla isn't cheap, but the love and care that goes into every dish were apparent & I'm fine with the price when things are made so well. The staff and customers are predominately Ukranian or Russian speakers as was the clientele, but everyone spoke English very well...no problem. An absolute must try. I ordered the Shrimp Orzo and my husband had the Beef Stroganoff - and both were so well made. It tasted very fresh and just yummy. Finally I ordered a fruit tart and my husband a cheesecake for dessert. The cheesecake was a little bit better in my opinion. The fruit tart was good but the crust was too thick which made it hard to break and eat, other than that it was still good but I probably wouldn't order it again. Everything else I highly recommend. The seafood were all a bit overcooked. Duet: 3/5 I for one love sweets but even this is a bit too sweet for me. Enough to where you teeth can hurt from it. Lovely notes of chocolate but the sweetness needs to be toned down. It would be nice if there was more sponge. Conclusion: Aesthetically everything looks amazing but good can be a little questionable. Maybe you'll have better luck with the other dishes. My friend and I went for brunch on a Saturday and we had to sit outside due no seats being available inside. When a seat opened up inside I asked one the waitress if we can move inside, she asked if I can give her a moment and 10 minutes later I noticed they gave the seats to a customer who had just walked in. Found this cafe on TikTok so I decided to give it a try. It's truly a hidden gem, in the middle of a strip mall in NE Philadelphia. I've driven past numerous times and never noticed it. I'm happy I found it on social media. The restaurant is decorated beautifully. The chairs are big and comfy and some of the nicest chairs I've sat in at a cafe. Most cafes have little tiny wooden uncomfortable chairs, but as soon as I sat down, I knew I was going to love this place. Our waitress brought us our silverware which was in a cloth holder and I just thought that was super fancy. I've never seen anything like that at a small cafe before. I was very impressed. I ordered the vanilla breakfast, I thought it was very good but I didn't understand how the cheese fit into the presentation. Also, I would have loved ketchup for my eggs but the waitresses never returned after the food was delivered to see how we were and if we needed anything. I also ordered the mango crepes just to try something sweet. They were delicious, but too sweet for my liking. There was a lot of syrup on them. I also had the salted caramel Raf coffee and it was delicious! I felt as though all the ingredients were fresh and well made - it wasn't a heavy, unhealthy meal. It was a great way to start my day. I would go back, maybe in the afternoon for a coffee and pastry- which they all looked delicious in the case. I'm sure they're as good as they look from the other reviews I've seen. Vanilla Cafe on Bustleton Avenue in the far northeast of Philadelphia, is owned/operated by two Kyrgyzstan women, who desire to bring the former Soviet block state's cuisine to the wilder world. Independent since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, the nation has undergone political upheaval since then, and is now governed by Sadyr Japarov, who promises an end to corruption after coming to power in a landslide electoral victory following a popular revolt ousted the prior leader. So, the time is right for the Kyrgyz people to show their national pride and give us a peek at their unique cuisine. I was there for breakfast and chose the "Classic Breakfast," for my morning meal. Of course, I didn't know what classic meant in a Kyrgyz kitchen, but soon learned that it was an effort to appeal to the large East European population in this part of Philly, and not really a national dish. Regardless, it was very good. Plain omelet, two grilled sausages, toast and small middle plate of greens and grape tomatoes in balsamic vinaigrette, with an Expresso Americano to brace me and work as a wash down. All tasty and very filling. While waiting I checked out the display case full of beautiful colorful pastries made in house. Most were mousse, shaped into large rings and smaller hearts and cones. There were also lemon cookies and multi layered cakes, called, "Gentlemen," which reminded of French Patisserie desserts. My eyes were ready to consume a sampling, but my stomach knew better than to try to absorb that much sugar so early in the day. Before leaving I met the owners, and had a nice conversation with them about their history and expectations for their new business. They asked me to return for dinner and try their more ethnic supper dishes, which they hoped would be as popular as their bakery wares. No doubt they will be as successful as the other Central Asian menus already located in this neighborhood. They would also like to branch out into Bucks County, and I invited them to visit Newtown, where they would be the first to offer the exotic foods of Osh and Bishkek to our adventurous palates.
