We had 2 dilemmas, our broken down car and how to get home about 1/2 hour away late in the afternoon. While waiting for AAA we googled nearby repair options. Vanderbilt Wal's had great Yelp reviews, so we called them to see if they could take our car if we were going to need a tow, and mentioned our predicament for getting home. Ride-sharing was not a possible option. Sue was so helpful and understanding. She agreed to take in the car and went out of her way to find someone that would give us a ride home at no charge. Horrible service! The worst communication I've experienced with a garage, I guess I'm use to five star dealer service, and this was the worst of the worst! They failed to call me and tell me my car was ready. When I contacted them 30 minutes before close they gave some excuse that my car was put up and they had no way of getting it out that the mechanic needed to looked at one more thing and everyone was gone. TODAY the old lady said it was done yesterday, but no one called so they put it away in the shop, WTF, great so get your story straight! And why wasn't I called to come get the car? She also said we wanted it ready for you to pick up first thing this morning, well if you would have had your listening ears on you would have heard me clearly say I had no way of picking it up today. They also failed to do service that they told me they would do! My over all experience HORRIBLE, and I was and would have been a repeat customer, never again adios Vander-suck! read more

Gander Wal's garage has treated me right every time I've been there. Have had 3 recent issues with my car, one that I had previously known about but had to wait to get fixed. 1. On our way back from a great vacation to Port Angeles. Lost oil pressure in our Yukon Denali and barley made it in to Shelton. We thought we were stuck for the weekend. However, this nice family owned business took us in and solved our problem.. I've been using Vander Wal's garage for maintenance and service on my vehicle for several years now. The first time was because both of my headlights went out, they made sure to get me back on the road with working headlamps asap even though I was a drop in at the end of the day. I've also had emergency repairs done here and they are so quick to get me back on the road safely.. I trust their judgement, I trust that they aren't over charging me for services and it's just really nice to have a mechanic who cares about their customers and making sure they are on the road safely in their vehicles. Took my Yukon in for an alignment, they fit me in next day which a greatly appreciate. When I got the vehicle back, it had a new code, they told me to bring it back next week. I brought it back, was told the tech that did the alignment wasn't in the office, he would call me back. I asked if someone else could plug in the snap on computer and scan for codes to see if it was something cause by the alignment, or a coincidence. The office staff told me it wasn't that simple, you don't just "plug it in and scan for codes". Fast forward TWO WEEKS, still no call back. I took the Yukon to another shop, who plugged their Snap-on computer in, read the codes, determined the steering wheel position sensor needed to be recalibrated because of the alignment. They re-calibrated it, and had the Yukon fixed in less than 5 minutes (something that should have been done after the alignment, the original time). I just called the shop back to explain the situation and let them know I no longer needed a call back (after two weeks, I doubt I would have received one anyways), and I got a "sorry, thanks for letting us know you don't a call back". Very disappointed with the communication and what seems to be a lack of caring about customer concerns and follow up. I gave a two star rating because they were able to get me an alignment next day. read more

We only had one day to get it fixed (a Monday no less), so we called first thing in the morning to see if they could help us. I lived in Shelton for 2 years. I love Vander Wals Garage. If there's something I can't do myself or anything to do with fluids, this place is my first stop. My first visit to Vander Wals Garage was because I thought I was going to need to replace my heater core on my 99 Expedition. I after talking with Don and Sue it was recommended we try flushing it. Flushing it saved me about $800-$1000. Knowing that the quality of their work is just like going to a dealership. Customer service is great. A family-run shop with honest service and reasonable prices. More importantly than that, the owners, Sue and Dan, really put their hearts into their business. My friend and I were on a road trip very far from home and the check engine light came on. We looked up local places and decided to stop in--an excellent decision! We got there about an hour before closing, and they stayed open almost an hour AFTER closing to help us get back on the road! Lovely people, very professional and polite, and were very understanding about our need to hurry on with the trip and make it to Mass on time. I needed 3 spark plugs replaced, it cost me about $250 all told. Dan seemed very knowledgeable and took steps to save us both time and money through his diagnostic process and we're now several hundred miles away without a hint of an issue! They are liars and cheats! Completely removed my condenser and took all the bolts and the receiver drier. Zip tied things back in back so the didn't have to bolt anything back. I had taken it in to get the A/C recharged. They kept adding more and more things and I just didn't have the money. When I told them that and that we should just stop where we were they got upset and this is what they left me with. 110% do not recommend! They also had replaced my turn signal previously. Cost me $300 for a $25 switch. They said all the wires were melted inside. When my other switch went out my husband replaced it. There were no wires it was a connector not wires. Don't go here unless you want to be cheated. read more

On Monday the 22nd of February I dropped my truck off with some hesitation issues, it ran fine but stuttered in acceleration. On Wednesday I  called to see if it would be done before the weekend, I needed the truck. The lady at the front desk answered, and said "oh I was going to call you" I have your the list of item from the mechanic, but I haven't had a chance to put together a bid. She read a laundry list of items from transmission flush, brakes are pulsating, oil change, I said no I can save you some time on the quote, I don't want those things. I just want to fix the issue I brought it in for, and you can do the license plate light, the platinum intake service, the plugs, serpentine belt,  and the bad coil. I figured it would be around $500, but I'd bite the bullet and have it done.  I never received a quote for the work that was being done, just a call to say the truck will be done this afternoon, and if you want the airbag light off it will be another $173. I asked how much is it now, she said it's $1,229, and with the pretensioner for the airbag it will be $14hundred and something, but at that point I wasn't really listening. I was flabbergasted that they had run up a bill of over a thousand dollars without a quoted price. I did some research on amazon of the parts needed to do the work, which came to a whopping $140.36. I understand being in business, just not in the business of screwing your customers. It was the first time I ever visited the business, and the last. read more

The used car I bought in Tacoma had a small leak in the head gasket. Vander Wal's quickly and correctly diagnosed the problem. Since Vander Wal's repaired my car it has been running like new! I took my car in for a fuel pump problem. The battery was also in need of a charge. Sue Vander Wal told me the battery was so dead that it could not even be jump started. I have driving for over 50 years, so I knew this was total nonsense. They also quoted me a price to replace the fuel pump that was $200 more than D&L Automotive, so I jump started the car without a problem and rushed off to get it fixed by someone I knew would not rip me off. I had the battery tested and it was OK and just needed a recharge. read more

I took my wife's minivan in for a busted power steering pump. Not only did they fix the power steering, but they did it on time and within the previously quoted estimate. Poor customer service. I walked in and interrupted a conversation between the two office people, proceeded to explain what was wrong with my car (I had a computer code that needed clearing) and got the response, "And what do you expect us to do about it?" The two owners of the company made me feel like an idiot for doing repair work on my own car. Several times I held back the urge to ask if I should just go somewhere that knows how to treat potential customers. Later, I was informed not to go there..I was just trying to find somewhere cheaper than the Volkswagen dealership to plug my car into a computer and make the light go off. While I was staying in Union my granddaughter was in Children's Hospital so I was driving to Seattle every other day to see her. My right headlight went out so I bought a replacement in Shelton at Oriellys on Friday. I couldn't put it in. I needed that headlight for the next drive to Seattle on Sunday. I asked Les Shwab to put it in. I waited almost 2 hours to be told they couldn't do it. It was now after 4 on Saturday. I went back to Oriellys and asked them who could help me. They called Vander Wal's. They stayed late to fix my headlight for me. What caring people! Any problems I have with my car in the future will be fixed by them. read more

I have a very hard time trusting most mechanics and I have always been a firm believer of the term "honest mechanic" to be a bit of an oxymoron; however, I can truly say with 100% confidence that the mechanics and staff at Vander Wal's Garage are the most amazing people and honest people I have ever met, but the best part is that their service is superb. There is a reason why they've been in business for almost 40 years, I believe and they have a great reputation throughout the community and believe me I know because I asked everyone and its always the same answer. The other day, a front ball joint broke on my truck and it was a very cold and rainy night. It was after hours, about 7 p.m. when I called them and they just happened to answer the phone, thank God. They waited over an hour to have my truck towed there. Plus, they let me borrow a car for a few days until my truck got fixed. They're such wonderful people.
