What a jewel of a place! We were driving across the country and found this place in Springfield MO. It was the best meal of our trip. We loved that it was independently owned and had its unique Dutch menu and ambiance. The menu is extensive and we wished we were not just driving through. This is the third time I have eaten at Van Gogh's and it will be my last. The food has always been very good, but the service was atrocious today. Part of our order was delayed, and when we got our bill, we discovered that the server had overcharged us. When we brought it to her attention, she was argumentative. We asked for the menu to show her the mistake; instead, she got her manager. The manager also argued with us and refused to correct the mistake, even though she admitted it was the way the server had entered our order. This is a shame because the food has always been good. But I won't eat at either Van Gogh's or the sister restaurant, Cafe Cusco, again. When restaurant staff would rather be defensive and argue with you than correct an obvious mistake, it says a lot the business. read more

I really love this restaurant!!!! I have been craving for Amsterdam food for so long and finally I found this restaurant! I would really recommend you to get the Holland pancake since it is one of the famous food in Amsterdam and they actually make it pretty good. I was here two weeks ago and everything was great. Today I came for brunch and my server told me it was state law that she could not accept an ID that's vertical. I have an enhanced Washington ID they do not require that it expires on my 21st birthday so it is still valid until 2022. I looked it up and the only state with a law against vertical IDs is Arizona. NOT only that but I was here 2 weeks ago and was served with no issue. I don't appreciate being lied to by my server and I wish you could train your staff properly about ID valid ** I showed the server my Washington ID and my University if Washington debit card. Everything we ate here was good... the crape with sausage was good but the spicy sausage, was a bit much for me, but had amazing taste. Not a fan of the pea soup which was too thick, but the sandwich was great. 1st time I visited thought it was awesome. 2nd time stopped by as a family after thanksgiving. Not only were the menus sticky and grimy but before we even ordered we spotted a cockroach on the table. The atmosphere is light and casual, with traditional decor to represent the Dutch culture. They have a good selection of options on the menu, and they also are conscious about dairy free, gluten free, and vegan options. Average entree price is around 10-15 dollars. We've been here twice now. Both times on a Sunday afternoon. Both times we've waited over an hour for food. The first time was a bit more excusable. The restaurant was packed and there was a fairly long wait just to be seated. When the food FINALLY arrived, we all agreed it wasn't all that amazing, and the portions were quite small for the price we were paying. Also, to put it lightly, the coffee just wasn't good. Nothing was a deal-breaker on this visit though. And, our server was fantastic, which really helped make up for everything. The second time we called ahead. Even though I was told there was only about a fifteen-minute wait, we live close so got us on the list. When we arrived the restaurant was only about half full. (Which begs the question: Why the wait?) Anyhow, I checked in with the hostess and was told our table was all set. Then, she proceeded to verbally direct me to our table. That's right! She didn't even take us to our table! This threw me a bit, but I rolled with it. Once seated, it took about ten minutes for a server to show up at our table. He took our drink orders and promptly returned with them to take our orders, which he did. And, we waited. And, we waited. And, we waited. Nobody stopped by the table. Not once. For over an hour. Finally, I got up and told someone how long we'd been waiting and asked if our food was coming any time soon. The response I got was SHOCKING! No apology. No attempt to make anything right. No. What I got was someone who made excuses about how Sunday is their busiest day. To which I replied about how the restaurant is half empty. She said that didn't change the fact that the kitchen is backed up because they're so busy. She didn't even offer to check on our food. Just excuses and attitude. So, I told her we were just going to leave and eat somewhere else. As we were walking away from our table, she caught us and rudely told us our food just came up if we still wanted it. We just told her no and walked out. This was, quite honestly, one of the worst sit-down restaurant experiences I've ever had. I REALLY wanted to like this place. I mean, it IS different. And, it's obvious they're trying to be high-end without being stuffy. But, they're REALLY missing the mark with the long waits. And, they completely failed on the customer service front for our second visit. I'm not so sure we'll ever be giving them a third chance. EDIT: I am blown away by the business owner's argumentative, victim-blaming, and condescending response to my review. I have NEVER in my life been treated so poorly by a restaurant! You're correct, Claire G., "you can't please all of the people all of the time" but, you'll never please customers who have issues with your establishment if you treat them like they're the problem instead of taking their complaints as constructive criticism and improving your quality as a result. I, typically, ignore negative comments on Yelp. Especially when the bulk of the reviews are positive. This time it burned me. I'll simply chalk this one up to experience. We will NEVER go back to this establishment, and we will be warning everyone we know. I'm also dropping my rating to a 1. It would be zero if the scale would allow. read more

Foolish business. Third time (AND LAST)! Food is fine but service is abominable, including the manager. Overcharged us and argued with us about it. I don't argue back much, just vote with my feet. Young manager will learn with time that fixing an obvious mistake of one of her servers is better for her restaurant than lying to cover up errors. Holy smokes, this place was unbelievable. I'm traveling across the country, and I'm glad I stumbled across this gem. First things first, the interior of this place is gorgeous and full of natural light. I really loved the Dutch wooden shoes on the walls and decorations. We were greeted by very friendly staff and seated immediately at the cutest table. Our waitress was so sweet and helped us figure out the menu. She spent over 15 minutes talking with my mom about the area and joking with us. As someone who has a gluten allergy, I wasn't expecting many choices at a bistro that I could actually eat, but there's gluten free options that ACTUALLY taste good that aren't just something like a salad. My mom ordered an Indian chicken skewer dish, my brother got the brexit breakfast (love the name), and I ordered the Dutch pancakes GF with blueberries and lemon drizzle. I about died when the giant pancake came out covered in blueberries, compote, and topped with ice cream. The pancake was the traditional thin and airy cake, and the compote was rich and full of flavor. You gotta love a place that serves French vanilla ice cream that actually tastes like real vanilla. I got halfway through the pancake before I traded with my mom for half of her food (it's always fun to share). I devoured one of her chicken skewers while dipping the meat in the zesty peanut sauce. Her food looked like a small portion, but the richness and flavor of the food quickly fills you up. It didn't hurt that the fries were super crispy and seasoned, and the coleslaw was fresh and crunchy. The brexit breakfast looked like a traditional English full fry, but I actually prefer theirs over the traditional one I've tasted in the U.K. My brother could barely finish all of his, so I stole a bite of what looked like an English banger sausage. It tasted better than the original since it was sort of like a kielbasa sliced in half and fried to crispy perfection. I know I'm praising this place but they deserve it. The service was amazing, the food was to die for, and the price was fairly reasonable. If I'm ever traveling in this part of the country again, l'll make sure I stop off here. read more

She found that they had a gluten free Dutch pancake so we were sold. This place definitely feels like it was opened by somebody who spent some time in the Netherlands and loved it. Yum! I recently visited this establishment with my son and daughter-in-law. I am pleasantly impressed with the atmosphere, the attentive wait staff and the presentation of our meal. We had breakfast/brunch on a Sunday. Our meal choices were delicious. My son had the rotterdam shwarma beef, lettuce, cucumber, creamy garlic dill & curry ketchup. He let me try a bite and WOW! It was yummy! The meat was so tender and absolutely delicious. The opa scramble meat (ham, smoked sausage, bacon) & cheese scramble, skillet chips & toast was my choice. My grandma was Danish and an excellent cook. I miss her cooking so much but now I have a place to go and feel like I am in her kitchen at her table again. This is a place you will not forget. We live in Oklahoma but have family in Springfield and Van Gogh's is always one of our go-to eateries there - not only because they have great food, ambience and service, but also numerous vegan options (which is somewhat rare in Springfield, MO). We visited last weekend and enjoyed a delicious breakfast, coffee & chai, then strolled around the farmer's market just across the street. I mistakenly left my credit card behind on our table but didn't realize until I was shopping in OKC on Monday. I quickly contacted the restaurant and someone immediately responded that they had my credit card in their safe and that they would be happy to mail it to me. I went here for my birthday and it just was not great. It was pretty dead, and yet I waited awhile for my water, awhile to order. The food did come out quick but they forgot the sauce on it and then it was crazy spicy. Which isn't their fault but it really would have been nice to have a heads up that it was going to be so spicy. Especially since they saw I was sharing it with my child. They also brought it out on a hot platter. Which would be fine, except I am sharing with a baby. So I had to ask for a separate plate. I visited another great spot in this neighborhood a few years ago and was pleased to see the area is expanding and there are lots of great ethnic, unique places to visit now. After seeing they had gluten-free pancakes and other items in the menu I was sold and was definitely not disappointed. The atmosphere is very bright and airy and the service was outstanding. I had the gluten-free Rotterdam pancake, which is topped with very savory beef schwarma, plus a fresh salad mix and creamy sauce.
