Untrustworthy owner and terrible professionalism. My neighbor called to have work done in their backyard. While performing that work, Val's tree service damaged several pieces of my property. I asked the site supervisor what had happened and he told me that there was nothing he could do about it and that I would need to contact the business's owner. The owner gave me a whole assortment of excuses and then apologized and then promised that he would make it right and pay for the damages the very next day. It has been over a week now and I have recieved no communications from him and, more importantly, NO PAYMENT for the damages. I would absolutely never hire this company for anything. When my boyfriend and I bought our home in Soulard one year ago, we found ourselves with a massive project in the backyard. The previous owner had left the space in a state of such disrepair. One of the biggest issues was the massive Southern Magnolia tree that was left unchecked. Our biggest concern were the powerlines going to our home as well as our neighbor's home that went directly through the tree. Using Yelp, I requested a quote from a landscaper but never heard from them. Luckily for me I also asked for additional services and Val's Tree Service promptly responded to me on Yelp. Val came out a few days later to check the tree out. He gave us a very reasonable price to trim the tree a decent amount and carve out the parts where the power lines went through the tree. One thing that really struck me was his passion for making sure we got what we wanted. He was very up front with us about how the tree may appear after services. Due to the location of the lines, they would have to carve out parts of the tree and make it seem unbalanced. Safety over aesthetics I said! The day that Val's Tree Service came to trim our tree, a team of three worked quickly and efficiently. The men were professional and courteous. I was very pleased with the work they did. I recently watched these guys work two trees at my neighbor's house. It was embarassing. The guy in the bucket had no helmet and no harness and didn't seem to be in full control of the bucket, as he almost raised it up right into a branch. That would've crushed his skull had he not caught himself about 12" from it. They applied wound paint to the pruning cuts. No one does this anymore, unless you're pruning an oak during oak wilt season. It slows wound compartmentalization and does not help the tree in any way. Finally, they absolutely butchered the trees. One of them was topped and loaded with heading cuts. It will take years to recover if it ever does. These guys are unsafe, have no idea what they're doing, and have no business working on trees. I am a certified arborist with almost 20 years experience. I know what I'm talking about. I know safety, tree biology, science, and how to apply all of these principles to tree work. Val's tree service does NOT. Do not hire these guys. Hire certified arborists who know what they're doing. read more

Recently had two very large pin oaks thinned out and dead branches removed (unfortunately the trees are infected with gall). Val gave us options to treat this and make it more them more healthy. The pricing was very reasonable and the crew knocked it our very quickly and did a great job cleaning up (yard looked nicer after the left than when they started the job). I would give this company zero stars, but unfortunately that is not possible on Yelp. This company hires extremely racist workers who are unbelievably rude to their customer's neighbors and have zero respect for their property. They are unprofessional and have no work ethic. My neighbor was getting their tree removed today, and two of the crew that showed up were named Roy Garrett Sr. and Roy Garrett Jr. Throughout the course of their work, they had to get into my backyard, and although we were not previously told that this work would be happening, we let them in without a word of protest. After a while, my mom saw one of their younger workers shaking the backyard fence really hard to see if it was strong enough to hold his weight when he propelled himself over it. In addition to being concerned about the fence, she was also worried about his safety, so she went outside to tell him not to do that. That's when all the insults started. Roy Sr. yelled extremely racist, sexist, and derogatory things at us. We are of Asian descent, and Roy Sr. called us "Ch*nk" multiple times. He was also cussing continuously at us, yelling things like, "shut the f*ck up," "Do you read?" (um, yes, I'm getting two graduate medical degrees), "You don't have a husband," "go f*ck yourself," etc., etc. He also taunted us by saying, "Well, call the police, why don't you? You don't speak English." (Um, yes, I do.) He wouldn't allow us to talk either. He would turn on the electric saw whenever we started talking to block our voices out. When I asked Roy Jr. for the company's name and contact information, he ignored me, and then Roy Sr. shouted that I could find that info on their truck outside. I went outside, and walked all the way around their truck, but there was no contact info. They were clearly having a laugh at my expense, and when I went back to confront them, Roy Sr. taunted, "Well, you don't read." They continued taunting us constantly, and I felt so threatened by them that I called the cops. When the cops showed up, it was "Yes, Sir," "Of course, Sir," and all manners of politeness to the policemen. The police asked them to get the owner of the company to swing by, and when Val dropped by, he apologized very haphazardly because the police were standing right there. But he made tons of excuses for Roy Sr. and Roy Jr. He said Roy Sr. was cranky because he had twisted his foot. He clearly does not understand that twisting your foot and being cranky is not a legitimate excuse for telling your customers (or their neighbors, or, frankly, anybody) to "shut the f*ck up," "go f*ck yourself," or call them "ch*nk." Of course, there was visible damage done to the fence. The fence panel had been pulled loose from all that pulling and pushing. Val first wanted to deny that there was damage ("The fence is old," he said), but I insisted that the panel was not loose before (which it wasn't). Val finally asked one of the workers to cut a wedge of wood to secure the fence because the policemen were standing right there. I would honestly give this company zero stars. They were so openly rude, racist, and sexist to the neighbors of the folks who hired them. This is even more unbelievable, because we allowed them to work in our backyard to make their job easier. We didn't have to do that, especially since our neighbors didn't tell us this would be happening. But so much for being nice. Correction: The names of the openly racist and sexist men are Roy Garrett Sr. and Roy Garrett Jr. (corrections reflected above). When I asked them if their names were spelled "G-A-R-R-I-C-K," Roy Sr. yelled, "Oh, you think you're smart huh? Knowing how to spell?" He did not correct my spelling. Thankfully, a friend of mine who knows his son and him (and their misogynistic, racist, and abusive ways) corrected my spelling. read more

Wanted to follow up as we had a huge sweetgum tree removed from our yard yesterday- we went with Val's tree service (lowest price by far) and they did a tremendous job!
