Valor came out initially to conduct an air quality test to help us determine the next step for a smell in our basement. David and technician Charles were very professional and knowledgeable and advised us of our options. We decided to have a section of our basement wall around a window well removed where the smell was strongest, as well as the carpet - all under Valor's containment/remediation protocol. Technicians Charles, Ronnell, and Mikey were prompt, courteous, and diligent. They found an area around the window well that, while not apparently moldy, was stained from water trapped due to poor drainage. With a baby on the way, we decided that it was time to take care of mold issues in an upstairs bathroom and in the basement. We first called out a general contractor who gave us a vague estimate of what the cost would be to remove the mold. Seeking a more definitive idea of what we were dealing with we called Valor Mold. Teddy came out and told us that Valor Mold charges a flat rate per room and the process they used to remove the mold. We decided that they were the ones to do the work. We lost our child just days before the mold remediation work was scheduled. I had a water intrusion problem for years and hired a company several years ago to find a solution to my problem. The company tried to divert to water intrusion to the sump pump but it did not resolve the problem as the water found another way to flood my basement. When I found Valor Mold they did a thorough assessment and found another solution to stop the water intrusion. In addition, they made sure I had a battery backup which is essential. It has been over 2 years since Valor Mold provided their solution and I have been dry after numerous heavy rain storms. Previously I had Mold from a solution that did not work. Don't look anywhere else for a mold expert to handle your problem! I thought I had a serious mold issue after my pest control company showed me extensive fungus growing in my house and garage attic and my HVAC room. They said it would cost $8-10k for removal. When I asked "how will the house would be kept safe during the removal from mold spores?" the representative replied "you have a fungus issue - not mold so there will be no spores." I found Valor Cleaning on yelp, and decided to contact them based on the good reviews they have. I called and left a message with their answering service on Sept 8th, and just missed Lois' call the next morning. I spoke to her later that day, and I scheduled an appointment for Fri between 10a-12p. They were flexible on the times, but since I work from home this was convenient for me. Lois then sent me a confirmation email about the appointment time, and a reminder email on Thursday. She also sent me a helpful pamphlet written by David, "Should I test for mold". David came out on Friday, calling 30m prior to confirm. He took a look at the damage with a water detecting machine (the same used by firefighters I think to detect hot spots though he was detecting cold)... and we could see a lot of cold behind a good bit of the wall. When we opened up the box on the wall (apparently with a water regulator valve) the insulation inside was damp... so we were pretty sure that was the cause of the leak, and the subsequent mold. David took several pictures, went over the process in detail and gave me a verbal estimate. I received my written estimate the following Friday. On the following Tuesday Lois asked if I had any questions. Unfortunately I was away on business, and didn't get back until 2 days later. I confirmed the start order on Friday, Sep 26. Everything was done online... from signing the contract to paying via paypal (in 3 separate installments throughout the process). It couldn't have been easier. Unfortunately, it was so easy that I didn't read the document completely. The remediation cost did not include the rebuild cost. More on this later. Lois sent me a reminder email on Fri, Oct 3rd and David came out on Sat, Oct 4th... calling again 30m prior to arriving for confirmation. His team setup a containment area and began work. They left a few hours later with David calling to reiterate the process and explain why they left, no more work could be done at that time. A pipe (the source of the mold) was still leaking and the wood framing was wet. I had to schedule a plumber and get him to repair the leaking valve that regulates all water into my home. Once this was completed, we gave it a few days to dry out. David's team returned on Mon, Oct 13th. Lois again sent a reminder email the day before, and David called 30m prior. Unfortunately it was still wet, so we had to give it another week to dry out. They returned on Tue, Oct 21st to finish the remediation. Again, Lois sent a reminder email and David called 30m prior to arrival. Even though Valor came out several times trying to complete the project, their price did not change. The remediation was completed and I was then faced with a decision to use Valor for the rebuild or seek out another company. They were not pushy in anyway and were perfectly ok with me going with another rebuild company that was right for me. I was a little surprised at the rebuild estimation that Valor gave me but a good friend confirmed that it was a fair price. Valor will be out soon to rebuild the drywall and baseboards removed (disposed of due to the mold). The bottom line is that this family owned and operated business is honest, hard working and very professional. Mold prevalence and the health issues it cause are SO under recognized in the environmental and medical world, and we feel SO lucky to live in an area that is served by Valor Mold. I have a genetic sensitivity to mold that triggers inflammatory conditions. Through worsening of these symptoms, had a mold inspector discover mold in basement walls that would have otherwise gone unnoticed until it soaked and spread outside the walls. While air samples are technically not a reliable tool to accurately diagnose elevated mold spores in doors, but our test results did come back with 10K+ count for both aspergillus (the family that produces carcinogenic aflotoxin) and penicillium. I just want to share as an aside that as someone who is sensitive to mold, my inflammatory symptoms (dyshidrosis rash, respiratory, neurological) got exponentially worse with each day that I was in our house pre-Valor remediation. After gathering several estimates for mold remediation in my house, I decided on Valor. They were endearing from the beginning and I got a very no BS feel from David (the owner). He was knowledgeable and walked me through lots of information regarding mold and things to look out for before, during and after the remediation. Short Version: PROPER mold remediation, easy scheduling, courteous crew that goes the extra mile, expert mold science nerds, expensive but worth it. Long Version: Valor Mold is the best in the business. We had many companies provide quotes but it was clear that several of them were drainage companies masquerading as mold remediation companies without proper remediation controls in place. Valor Mold was the highest bidder but also the ONLY company that truly understood how mold remediation should be done. Mold spores are like blowing dandelion seeds around when disturbed. Valor Mold gets this and they covered every square inch of my fully finished basement with plastic, complete with barrier walls, zippered doors, and decontaminant areas, using negative air pressure. Removal of contaminated drywall and insulation was very methodical and disposed of in duct taped heavy duty trash bags. Foundation walls and framing that could be salvaged were sand-blasted instead of chemically treated, fully removing the mold. Once all the contaminated materials were removed, air scrubbers were used to clean the air prior to removing the containment areas. Post-remediation real-time on-site testing was state of the art and I did not bother to re-hire the industrial hygienist I had started this project with. We had three rooms remediated and even though they were all reading in the normal range for mold spores, one room was elevated compared to the others. David and his team, at no additional cost, recleaned the room. Still not satisfied, they recommended removal of the carpet (mold spore haven) and more drywall just to make sure there wasn't a hidden source of mold. We agreed and they did this, and recleaned, at NO additional cost. David, being the mold nerd that he is, talked to me at length about the latest mold science, and even tested some other areas of the house for me. He also gave some recommendations on air filters for the rest of the house and guidelines on airflow and humidity levels throughout the year. The scheduling process was seamless and the crew showed up on time each day. One day, the lead technician was sick and personally called me, letting me know who would be in charge that day. The crew was always courteous, friendly, and genuinely did a thorough job. They gave me feedback throughout the process and asked for approval when they thought they would have to remove more material than originally anticipated. They showed me pictures daily of the work performed and where water was coming in. Our primary issue was water pooling around the house and seeping into the foundation walls due to a botched gutter downspout installation into the ground. One of the crew members was so disturbed by this that he went out and purchased downspout extensions for all of my downspouts and installed them at no additional charge, staying late at night because of expected rain. We saw an immediate resolution to the root issue and it has been a great short-term solution while we work on hiring a company to properly install underground drainage. I contacted Valor based off the previous excellent Yelp reviews. We had a small patch of mold on our hallway ceiling so I felt it would be best to have a professional check it out. It's a family run business and Lois was extremely helpful and pleasant on the phone and worked with me to schedule a good time for David to visit. The only time I had available was Friday after work and Lois said it's no problem so David showed on time at 6:30pm. He quickly assessed that the mold was not a major issue and didn't charge a cent for the evaluation even though I offered to pay him for his time. Short review: Valor is the gold standard in mold remediation! Full review: Our situation was critical -- a family member with asthma and a severe mold allergy. We absolutely needed the best service. Unfortunately, the first thing to know is that Virginia has nearly ZERO regulation of mold remediators; it's basically a "self-regulating" industry. --eye roll-- But Valor's credentials and certifications exceed any other company we found. Important to note: They get *every worker* certified. This is huge because "company certification" doesn't mean all workers have been certified. One service we interviewed uses day-workers for some mold jobs. We could've assumed from their company certification that all workers were fully trained in mold -- wrong! Valor is a specialist. All other mold services fall into the "restoration" category -- fire, flood, smoke, mold, and more. So, the workers at your house might've only done a couple mold jobs. Valor *only* does mold remediation, nothing else. The office manager, Lois, was friendly and professional and answered every question. If she didn't know, instead of making up an answer (as some people do), she got back to me. Remember... due to the health seriousness, I had to be 100% confident, so I asked many questions. Next was the free assessment by the owner, David. This was when I first saw why Valor is far above its competition -- David's a mold geek! Imagine the kid in science class who thought everything was amazing. That's David. Short of having a mold PhD, he probably knows it all. Despite being a free assessment, he was at our place for 75 minutes. And this wasn't a huge job -- typical, he said -- so he could've been quick. But he checked everything, explained exactly how they'd do the work, and answered every question. You can tell that David is 100% passionate about his work, which is why Valor is excellent. Now, I should mention, Valor isn't cheap. But if you think you'll get the best (or even great) service cheap, you're fooling yourself. So when another company quotes you half what Valor does (as we experienced)... big red flag! Valor will probably be the highest quote, but if you can afford it, it's money well spent. If yours is an insurance claim, pay the difference. Important: Valor's fee is basically all inclusive. Other services will low bid, then hit you with extras. Valor ended up working three full days on our job -- their quote was for a day and a half -- and yet the price stayed the same. Now to the actual work... Kristyn and Joey arrived on time, prepared, professional, and friendly. They reiterated the specs of the job and, like Lois and David, asked if we had questions. Despite our grilling (our last assurance before our kitchen would be nearly destroyed), they were neither annoyed with us nor hesitant they'd do it right. Their work was totally impressive. They meticulously covered every square inch of the kitchen in thick plastic, double-taping the edges -- with a high-powered fan to suck the air through a flex-duct and out the window. Their containment area was worthy of a scientific lab using the best materials (which I knew from my research). This may seem like overkill, but a quarter-million mold spores fit on a dime and are invisible in the air. Any gap can spread them around your house during the work. (Look on Valor's website about containment -- photos of theirs versus a competitor's.) They then donned hazmat suits from head to toe, taking great care to check inch by inch to see how far the mold had spread. Bad material was double-bagged in thick contractor sacks and gooseneck-tied shut -- removed via a pathway to the nearest exit. This included a highly sticky mat to remove mold spores from their soles. Each time, they had to remove their hazmat suit inside containment, pass through a special zipper door, then go back in and put the suit back on. They worked through every bit of the space to reach a safe margin -- removing whatever couldn't be saved but preserving as much as safely possible to minimize re-build costs. This ended up taking three long days. But never once did they hurry, take extended breaks, or seem frustrated. They even had the awareness to update us, ask if we had questions, and reassure us. They also took dozens of photos to document and show us progress (since we couldn't go into the containment). Finally, they HEPA-vacuumed and alcohol-wiped every square inch of the entire kitchen to remove any remaining mold spores and mycotoxins. We couldn't find a speck of dust after the containment was taken down. If you've ever dealt with a service that operates at the highest level, then you know what I mean about Valor. You feel completely at ease and fully trusting of their work. And the results speak for themselves -- our family member never had another problem, even with all the windows closed for the cold weather. (Before remediation, we needed the windows open 24/7.) Called and asked for an assessment of a distinct mold smell coming from a basement room. Was talked into a $400 machine test to see if I had mold. Could be done in two months. So when i asked if the machine said yes vs no (and how much) what would be the approach then. She said she wasn't a mold expert. I asked that I have a mold expert called me. A couple hours later she called back after speaking with her supervisor and gave me the same story -- basically that that is how they do things. If I wanted a more in depth assessment they could refer me to an hygienic firm. What I had asked for was to speak with a mold expert to tell me why they might do based on the reading of the machine. I have been having a small mold issue at the ceiling line in 2 of my bedrooms. The company was prompt to return my call, offered a free estimate of any work, came out on a Saturday to do the inspection, and ultimately provided some recommendations for me to reduce the humidity in those rooms and how to clean the area myself. I loved the conservative approach to my problem, and was told they could recommend a professional painting service with mold resistant paint and that I should add more insulation to the affected area if my initial efforts did not remedy the problem. Both the woman I spoke with on the phone to schedule the appointment and the inspector that came to my home, were especially courteous and helpful. I have never written a review before, but felt compelled to share my positive experience with Valor -not the cheapest mold remediation company I found, but certainly the most well-informed and professional. The doctor treating my mold-related health issues told me what to look for in a contractor. Valor met all the criteria - from setting up containment to the "HEPA sandwich" or "immaculate clean" regimen. The owner (David) actually asked if I'd been tested for Lyme disease because of the relation between mold reaction and Lyme. Incredible, since the medical community itself is only just now documenting that relationship. (Even my doctor was impressed by this). In fact, post-Lyme mold syndrome was exactly my issue! After reading many things online about mold removal companies I was more than a little worried about trying to find a straight shooter to help me out with my mold problem. Given the good reviews here on Yelp, I called the number on the website and left my information with the answering service. Within a few hours Lois called me to find out the details of my issue. Setting up an appointment for an estimate was quite easy and David was very good about communicating with me about the appointment. Once at my house David very quickly determined that the black that I unearthed under some damp linoleum was actually adhesive not black mold. He referred me to some mold testing services if I wanted to be sure of his assessment, but based on his experience, I didn't have a mold problem. He also said that he doesn't do mold testing because of the conflict of interest inherent in a mold remediation company telling you you have mold that needs to be removed. He definitely knows his stuff. We also needed work done ASAP and valor was able to accommodate. Overall, we found Valor to be extremely flexible and willing to work around our schedule. There was never any pressure to meet specific dates. There were multiple payment/financing options which helped a lot. We have multiple rehab projects lined up for the basement so every dollar counts. Communication during the project was excellent. Valor was very responsive whether by phone, text, or email. Valor provided a recap of the work done at the end of every day. In addition, Valor provided advice and referrals in regards to my overall basement rehab project (waterproofing and general up keep). We recently moved into a 1940's home and a contractor who was updating the laundry room in the basement recommended that I contact a mold specialist because he saw something "black" underneath the carpet in the basement. I called Valor Mold and left a message with the answering service. Ms. Lois called me back later that day, and I explained the situation. She told me, "Don't touch anything." We set up a time for her son, David to come out. In the meantime, she emailed me a helpful article David had written about what to do when you think you have mold. A few days later (very quick turnaround time!), David came to our home. He was extremely polite and professional. He took a careful look at everything and provided his opinion that he didn't see anything suspicious. I appreciated his time and honesty. If I determine that I have a mold issue that needs addressing in the future Lois and David will be the only company I call. They were a pleasure to work with. David and his mom, Lois, are very personable, but don't let the charm fool you. They know mold but business operations are a major weakness. We had one guy walk off the job while we were on vacation and David didn't even bother to tell us. We were shocked when we returned home and the job was not complete. Most businesses would call their customer, explain the situation, and provide a solution for the problem. That's the opposite of what they did. He did find someone competent to finish the job once WE called him. That said, the place was a mess when they left. Paint ripped off the walls and staples left in the walls and ceiling of the room. David cited a clause in the contract that said they are not responsible for paint that comes off the walls when they work, but you would assume that they could at least remove the staples from our walls and ceiling. It's our fault for not reading the contract in more detail, but please don't make the same mistake we did. I could go into detail about how they missed a huge area in our crawlspace, which exponentially increased our original estimate, but I think you get the point based on the examples that I have provided. I can state without exaggeration, that hiring Valor was one of the most important decisions I've ever made vis a vis hiring a professional services company. Why? It turns out that my basement has been infested with mold, and the reason I've been having increasingly inexplicable and difficult to treat health issues over the past several years. We are forever grateful to Valor for its honesty, professionalism, heart (yes, businesses can have heart), and above all, a respect for the highest standards it brought to our mold remediation. It scares me to think how close we were to engaging a crackpot service, spending tons of money, and ultimately, not remediating the mold. There is a reason why Valor Mold has many good reviews as well as high rating on Yelp. Unfortunately, I was constricted by deadlines for my other projects so I couldn't go with David's service (he was fully booked, an indication of popularity). I ended up using a mold company (Maryland based) and was not satisfied with the work. Unlike them, who were completely unresponsive and didn't even bother send me the receipt as promised, David followed up to check up on me and give me advice on how the work should be done as well as inspection information before doing any further construction to the house despite the fact that I didn't go with his service.
