Know the owners from a lifetime ago, but have not seen them for quite sometime. Heading to Florida to see an Aunt and noticed they were pretty much on the way. Stopped in and not only did they treat like no time had passed, but their team treated me like one of their own. Asked for a small burger and got a monster of a burger (not its name) and a generous amount of onion rings. Got to taste several flavors of beer and could not choose a favorite, so I chose one for the color. read more

We arrived there at 1600 on Sunday, we waited fifteen minutes for someone to stop by and take our drink order, we knew what we wanted... Five minutes pass and our drinks come. There was a table of ten who walked in after us, they got most of their drinks immediately. The beer didn't come fast enough for one guy and he walked out. The rest followed him. We were still waiting for someone to visit us while all of this took place. - We should have left. This was one of the few places open on Mother's Day, they weren't busy at all. The service was extremely slow and our waitress didn't really give us the time of day. She actually asked us if we had been there before... Yeah, you have served us at least four times. I was hoping this place would be exceptional. But I guess this is a one trick pony and you go there for the beer and lower quality foods which drunks like to eat. I don't drink, so I guess I will skip going to this place in the future. The tourist season is in full swing. They will patronize this location so the owners won't miss my local money... We used to like this place, so much so that we went there for our birthdays today (hubby and I have the same birthday). It was my 60'th birthday and it was a big deal to me. We ate, then wanted some wings to go, because were were planning to bake a b-day cake for ourselves and were going to munch on some wings while doing so. I opened the to-go container to have one, and they were totally burnt. I was told by the bartender they weren't really burnt, they just looked that way. I tried some of the skin to see, and it tasted burnt. The bartender tried to tell me other orders were coming out that looked burnt, too, but that doesn't ring true. We saw an order of wings go by that looked amazing, golden brown. I was really disappointed, as this had been one of our go-to places in Murphy. In the end we had to suck it up. The place didn't care. I was extra annoyed because my husband had paid for the wings in advance, and tipped as if we'd eaten them there. This might be the worst pizza I have had. The crust was soft and undercooked, the cheese was too heavy and tasted like processed cheese( not real mozzarella). Bad day at the Brewery. Late lunch time with no tables clean. Waitress cleaned one for us and then we waited for 10 minutes for our waitress. She asked for drink orders...my wife ordered the home made root beer, they were out. OK, she says give me a second, I asked for the sampler of beer and she left. She returned holding a drink for someone else, tells me to take the card and the pen in her hand. After figuring it out, it was an erasable card where you can choose the 4 beers you want to taste. Anyway...10 minutes later she comes back and asked if we would like to order(no drinks yet mind you) I asked for the pretzel with beer cheese(this is excellent by the way), but they were out of pretzels. Thinking here...out of pretzels...let's offer bread sticks with the cheese and maybe we can sell some...but NOOoooo. Since we had already been there 20 minutes and still had nothing I told the waitress this is not a good experience today, and we had been there before and it was normally good. She gave me the old understaffed, blah blah blah...told her I understand, but that it wasn't my problem so we were leaving. I will also add, during our 20 minutes my wife tried to use the bathroom multiple times and was unable to. Owners please read. Due to this horrible experience we will not be back when we are in Murphy. It's too bad and I really like your pizza and the whole fresh brewed beer offering. read more

We tried this restaurant for the first time while we were shopping in Murphy, and we loved it! The pizza had the best crust ever, not too thick and not too thin. The brick oven pizza is delicious and the portions are huge, so you can enjoy your leftovers for lunch the next day. I strongly recommend the barn yard pizza, but even if your kids insist on cheese pizza, you won't be disappointed. We have gone back multiple times to sample the different beers. Our girls love the ginger ale and root beer on tap as well. The chalk wall is an awesome way to occupy the kids if they aren't interested in what's on tap. The menu offers a variety so every time we can try something new. Our girls love the onion rings and cheese bread, my husband raved about the gyro and Greek salad. I'm glad that this brewery is still in operation since there are so few dining options available in Murphy. That said, the beers essentially all taste the same, (mediocre), and are served too warm. The food options are similarly somewhat unremarkable, but offered at a reasonable price point which is a rarity in Murphy. A better bet is Hoppy Trout brewery in nearby Andrews. read more

Friendly owner and staff. Started with trout bits and they were really good. Crispy breading and still flakey fish. A nice tartar sauce that had a bit of a kick. Owner talked me into the gyro, which was a good choice. Lamb was flavourful and tender (for lamb at least). The cook crisped the pita before serving and it added a nice crisp. I like this place. I enjoy the selection of beer, and the pizza is amazing! The only thing I don't like is the coleslaw, but that is just a personal preference. I love a good pizza, this had way too much cheese, my well done pizza which I asked for, had wet crust and not crispy at all. The beer was warm and no foam on top. My family travels through Murphy once or twice a year and choices of eateries are very limited. I keep reminding myself, this isnt Asheville with competitive culinary offerings of the larger markets like LA and NYC. No, this is a small town where people who've probably been told they're great cooks get an idea to open up a business and prove it to everyone. Let me start with the food. It's okay. When your choice is pizza hut down the road or this place, it's really a toss up. Here it's more expensive. We ordered the barnyard and it was loaded up with toppings on an oven-fired crust but the flavor was bland. I prefer a robust sauce. I suggest you skip the pretzel and beer cheese dip. My guess was velveeta and a frozen pretzel that fell right off the Sysco truck. The greek salad was good. If the dressing was house-made, that was a plus and they used Kalamata olives (I hate when places sub black olives on a greek salad). I didnt care for the gyro meat but hey, I live 20 miles from Tarpon Springs so I've had better. Did I mention skip the pretzel and cheese whiz? Now for the service and I want to forwarn you what you may experience here. We first came in on a Friday night at 8:30 and sat down (it's a seat yourself establishment). The posted hours said open til 10pm. For 15 minutes, the waitstaff ignored us when the owner (I presume) spotted us and informed us that the kitchen closed at 9. Might wanna post that somewhere. He was very apologetic so no hard feelings, we said we would come back the next night. And we did. 6pm on Saturday when we walked in to a packed house. Because it's a seat-yourself place and no waiting list, we found ourselves hovering around the front door, uncomfortably close to other diners. There is nowhere to sit and wait either inside or outside and if you stand outside, you may never get a seat since there's no wait-list. Shortly after we arrived, a couple of men at a table abruptly got up and left. There were no drinks or utensils on the table so we hesitated to take the table until I watched them get in a car and drive off. Within minutes, a waitress brought us menus and said someone would be right with us. But they werent. We waited 20 minutes before I got up and asked one of the servers at the next table who was responsible for ours. She sent over a new server who apologized and said our order would be right out. I said we hadnt ordered anything. COnfused, she took out her notepad and began to read off the order of the men who were sitting at our table before us, the one's who had gotten up and left, apparently b/c they got tired of waiting. Hmm, so they had placed orders already but when they left, there nothing on the table, not even drink glasses. THis was not encouraging. Our server then explained that the kitchen was busy and asked us to put in our entire order at once. So we did. Another 20 minutes passes and she comes back with cold pretzels and cold velveeta in half-melted plastic cups (ie: the beer cheese dip) and noticing that we still have neither drinks nor utensils, says she will be right back. But she isnt. She serves other tables food and drinks, tables who came in AFTER us. I finally got up again and went directly to the bar to ask for our drinks and utensils. It was the owner (again, I presume) who was there the previous night. He didnt seem to recognize me and didnt say "Thanks for coming back" but instead was clearly irritated. I tried not to take it personally and not wanting to get our server in trouble, volunteered to take our drinks and utensils back to the table but he insisted one of the waitstaff do it. Drinks and utensils delivered along with the rest of the food. At this point, we had been there over an HOUR. While we ate cold pizza, I flagged down our server to ask drink refills. She forgot. Twice. As she returned finally with the check she asked if there was anything she could get us and I started laughing "Refills?" Now, let me try to soften the blow here. She was embarassed. If she had been rude or deliberately ignoring us, I'd have pitched a fit but this was a nice woman who was struggling to the point that I believe she had never been a server in her life. I have. ALthough anyone who has gone out to eat knows that drinks are served 1st and immediately, appetizers, then meal, then you keep the drinks refilled to keep the table happy. The service here was SO bad, it was laughable. But at the same time, I felt sorry for our server so we still left a tip and accepted her apologies, even as we quietly agreed we were NEVER coming back here to eat. There was really no excuse for the bad service as the crowd had cleared out within half an hour of us getting there. We just felt invisible, as did apparently, the men who had been sitting there before us. PS- dont get the beer cheese. read more

Yes, I imagine when busy it might be crazy and slow service- negative reviews I read for Mother's Day etc... It's tough. It's a small town. Get real. Great brews and food for the local area. My husband and I who are transplants from the NYC area and I have also live in the city. (Booboo take note) We frequent the Brewery 1 - 2 times per month. Usually for lunch. My husband is a beer connoisseur and was so excited when this place opened. We both have enjoyed our food and my husband enjoys the craft beers. A few times the service was not quite up to par but anyone can have a bad day. If you have a bad experience anywhere you should give the place a second chance. And before you order different beers they do offer a sampling rack with I think 4 or 5 different beers. Also they will always pull you a small sample to try before you buy. MARGERETTE PIZZA is fantastic! Never tried the pretzel or beer cheese cause we like food. Husband loves the cheese steak. All of the employees have always been nothing but gracious and friendly. Everyone has too high expectations at times. Don't expect the staff to remember you right off the bat. Doesn't happen anywhere. Especially NYC, been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Just because you live in a big city doesn't make you an expert. Thank you Valley River Brewery for always giving us a good time. And thank you to the other great eateries we are so lucky to have here in beautiful Murphy, NC just two hours from anywhere. We stopped here on a bike ride for dinner and 3 of us had the burger which was very good. The bun looked very dense but was actually lite and airy. The fresh cut fries are cooked perfectly. Casey was our server, and five stars all the way! Super friendly guy, and a great sense of humor. He made some great recommendations and checked on us often. Service was very quick. Pizza was really tasty, and that's coming from a genuine ny pizza palette. We had the barnyard, deluxe, and a gluten free. We'll be back again, and I'll keep trying the house beers. Speaking for a group of locals who really enjoy beer, we all agreed the brews here were awful. We tried 5 different beers and none were good - extremely surprising and disappointing for a "brewery." Temperature and carbonation were obviously off. Some beer was sent back (but still charged). Others in our group chugged theirs as fast as they could just to be done with it and not waste money. The only thing worse than the temperature of the beer was the temperature of the room. Bad beer on top of inefficient and unaccommodating service made for an unpleasant experience overall. I had a very bad experience in the place. Came on a busy day found a single table,never have had to wait to be seated before but it was not bussed waitress told me that I waited for it to be bussed. The glasses were removed but not wiped off. Tired, I sat down and waited another group came in behind my husband and I and their tanked was bussed and the waitress brought them water and was taking their order as I sat still sitting. I mentioned this a waitress said, Well, you didn't wait to sit down before I finished bussing the table. As I left with my husband she pointed to a wrinkled piece of white typewriter paper that said wait to be seated which I surely would have done had it been displayed properly as I said I do not recall waiting to be seated before here in waited to be seated before in this Valley River Brewery.
