Clearly, some work could be done here. For instance, it is not currently possible for me to take the bus to work, due to the routes not covering the entire valley. Wait time is definitely an issue... even busy routes sometimes only have a bus every half hour, which is just ridiculous for planning. When I lived in Tempe, it wasn't quite as ridiculous, as the buses all went to a central "hub," and thus got me to school, work, and home, since most all were located downtown. Actually, that's not true... the bus was most useful to me when I lived in the southerly portions of the city or Mesa... the'burbs to downtown routes are quite organized and frequent. Anything else is a crapshoot in terms of convenience, or even the very existence of a reasonable route between your two locations. It's fun to take the bus, but don't get caught behind one! Each stop typically seems take at least 1 or 2 minutes. Not enough people have metro cards, because they are (or at least were) ridiculous in price unless you ride the bus at least once each day. Then, you save a bit. Were the routes more, um, there, this would be reasonable. Anyway, this leads to lots of change counting and transfer giving. Transfers are also a crapshoot, but I think they are only supposed to last for an hour... Sometimes, you get lucky, though, and it's like an all-day pass to an amusement park. Bus drivers are a different kind of animal. They are a diverse group: I've had some awesome, jolly ones (the black lady who sings while she drives, the guy that looks and acts like Santa Claus) and some disgruntled ones (the guy who stuck his head out the window and threatened to call 911 on someone who cut him off, then did, screaming into the phone in a thick accent, the guy with horn-rimmed glasses who wouldn't let me ride because I was a dime short, the guy who refused to help me figure out the bike rack, then honked at me as I fumbled with it, horn right near my face, of course). The people who ride the bus are just as interesting, depending on my mood I would get into some weird conversations (talking politics in spanish with drunk guys on the FLASH, swapping diy hair-cutting strategies with a pink-plumed art student, discussing veganism with a snobby Gentle Strength employee 'back in tha day,' being picked up on by all sorts of people). A book or walkman will grant you your solitude, if that is what you desire. Writers should definitely ride the bus. read more

VALLEY METRO IS A 3RD WORLD COUNTRY TRANSPORTATION! Buses always smell bad,trash and homeless sleeping on bus stops, never on time, schedule is a joke, you have to wait 30 minutes or even an hour for the next bus, ridiculous and the expensive. I visited Mexico city last summer and I used their public transportation, and compare to Arizona is way better, buses always on time every 5 minutes and they have, light train, subway, minibuses, double decker buses just like the buses in London, the buses smell nothing and their bus stops are always clean, no homeless, the minibuses stop anywhere, there are not specific stops for these minibuses so you just put your arm up to hail one and tell the driver: can you stop here to step down the minibus, is soo convenient and the PRICE, OMG! 5 pesos (0.25cents) for a 1 day pass that you can use on the subway or any other public transportation. The worst train system I have ever been on. I got kicked off a train at the airport because that was the last stop for that train and then no other trains for over a half hour to continue the route. This was at 7:30pm. Obviously airports are in great parts of town so it was a nice place to be stranded. I live literally across the street from a station and will never take this again. read more

We have the worst public transportation system which is RIDICULOUS for a city this size. The drivers are constantly rude, buses are so unreliable, and you never know when this joke of a system is going to be on strike because the drivers want even more money than they earn. I wish I made what they do! I make $9.14 an hour and I have a bachelors degree! A few situations that have pissed me off over the years involving either unreliable buses or drivers being constantly rude: Recently, I witnessed a driver yelling at an older man with a broken leg utilizing a knee scooter because it took him awhile to board the bus from the front because she was rude and wouldn't let him use the ramp. He was taking too long for her tastes. When it was time to deboard and he asked to use the ramp, she still wouldn't let him and when I asked her why she told me she didn't know he wanted to. Which is BS because he asked when he wanted to get off the bus. She would only lower the bus but it was still hard on him. I missed a job interview a week ago because my first bus was 15 minutes late, and when it finally came and I got on, the joke of a bus driver was having a conversation with the man sitting behind him. When we finally got to the bus station, he says, "I know I'm late. hahahaha. At least I got you guys here." Well what good does it do when you already missed your connecting bus and you're going to be a half hour late to your interview? About a year ago, I was boarding a bus and I had my ASU pass that I tap. The fare box was displaying the whole "No smart card' message that takes a few minutes to go away. I was waiting it out and the driver started screaming at me. I calmly explained what was going on and he threatened to call police. I had my pass which showed it was valid, it was the PIECE OF SHIT farebox. So, if you have a car and thinking about using public transit to save gas and for the environment, just pay the money if you can. You probably don't need me to tell you that when it comes to public transit, Phoenix's is a joke compared to the rest of the country. I remember when I first moved to Arizona in the mid 80s, there seemed to be a lot more pride in the bus system - there was that great ad touting the benefits that ended with a surprised bus rider discovering he had sat next to Governor Rose Mofford. Yet steadily, the buses are considered an afterthought if not an outright joke. I'm sure it would be nice to pretend that lots of people ride the bus out of a sense of altruism - helping cut down on pollution and traffic - but let's face it; the way our buses are, the only people that ride them are those who have no other choice! The financially disadvantaged and those without transportation. Those who ride the bus DEPEND on it and Valley Metro could care less about those who out and out need it. They continually reduce routes (plus cut places a route goes to) and raise fares. The main problem though is the bus drivers. Once upon a time they were generally great! But over the last several years, the good bus driver has become the exception. The drivers have held the city hostage a couple times by going on strike...and yet after they've done so the service provided by the bus drivers hasn't gotten better but WORSE. On a regular basis they don't stop for passengers who are transferring from one route at an intersection to another - they seem to take an almost sadistic delight in not picking them up like it's some big game to them. I've even seen several instances where they don't even pick up someone who's already right there at the stop ...which means one of two things: (1) either the driver was being purposefully malicious or (2) they truly didn't see them which calls into question whether such a driver who misses major things like that should be entrusted with driving huge vehicles carrying a large number of passengers? This type of behavior happens daily and frequently. Yet if you submit a complaint, you'll receive a patronizing and mostly generic response indicating that no one cares that the drivers aren't doing the thing they're hired to do - and if manageent doesn't care when people complain, this gives the drivers carte blanche to misbehave more often because they know they can get away with it. Most infuriating is the fact that drivers act up so regularly AFTER having gone on strike - they received what they wanted and are now overpaid (the cost of which is passed on to the consumer in increased fares) to do a job that they're doing LESS than before they went on strike. Yet it's likely they will soon be striking again. Seriously? The drivers have yet to demonstrate that the last raises were deserved - the way the drivers act actually should be rewarded with their last pay raises revoked until they can prove that they are capable of doing the job they're supposed to be doing. Until they can do that, then no raise for you! The sad part is that of course there is the occasional good bus driver that does pick up each and every passenger and greets them with a smile, is never rude, etc. But this type is so rare these days that they're overlooked because they're not the norm. Such a driver should be furious with the others that are ruining their reputation and goodwill. If Phoenix bus drivers are going to hold the city hostage with their strikes and insistence of being overpaid (as they're put in a position where those who are underpaid and/or financially disadvantaged are DEPENDENT on them), then they need to prove they've earned their pay by at least doing the minimum required of them and if they can not then they need to be held accountable and taken off the street if they fail to do their basic job, read more

Worst public transportation system I have ever used. It would be faster for me to ride my bike where I want to go if it wasn't so damn hot here. Buses are always late adding 20-30 minutes to your commute time for every bus you have to take. Bus drivers are constantly rude to their customers if there is even an interaction. Today I had to wait an extra 20 minutes for the 19 connector on 19th avenue. The first bus never showed up and then 3 19 connector buses came one after the other. 10 passengers needed to catch the 19th South that was across the street from the connector. I used the bus system every day and a big fan of the system, the drivers and system in a whole. The buses are pretty clean, drivers are very friendly and the bus system covers most of the phoenix area. Most of the bus stops are clean depending on the area, prices are affordable if you visit business that sells bus passes. For example a day pass is $6.00 when you buy tickets at the bus vs. going to Wallgreens/7-11 etc for $4.00. read more

I have been using Ride Choice for a couple of years . I was happy with the previous company but am very disappointed with the company now handling it. They have double booked, scheduling pickup from two different cab companies twice in the past two weeks, and scheduled pickup on the wrong day several times on the past month. This is after initially claiming I was not eligible for services although I had used the services with the previous company. Yesterday I spent an hour on the phone trying to straighten out my latest pickup to visit the foster kids I tutor as a volunteer. This is what I use Ride Choice for, usually twice a week. read more

The 56 bus on priest is ALWAYS LATE! there for I can never connect on time to the 45 on Broadway which is always on time! This is DAILY I'm tired, leaving work and trying to get home if the 56 was on time I would not have to always sit in the heat for 15 mins for the connection because the bus is just leaving when the 56 pulls up...it's always at least 5-10 mins delayed. This is not about the drivers, although they are a mixed bag varying from friendly, courteous and even compassionate to grade A butthole. This is about the transit SYSTEM, I have used larger and smaller transit systems (in California and Kansas) and each of them had one thing in common, customer service, reliability, and professionalism. Even utilizing their websites are different, since our online route schedule should never be trusted, I often find the times it says are COMPLETELY different than when the bus actually arrives at your stop. If you notify someone that the online route schedule is wrong, there is barely an apology and a comment about someone fixing that (they don't). When a bus breaks down (especially fun during the summer) they make you wait outside in the heat until the next scheduled bus arrives. If your bus only comes once an hour you are pretty much screwed. There are no repercussions for their inability to keep to route departure and arrival times, or if a bus driver was rude. They don't care because there no other alternatives to our one transit system with many different privately owned routes, because no matter what, they make money. This is not a city to be walking long distances in from May to September, with 100 plus degree heat, it's easy to run the risk of experience sun stroke, or heat stroke. I have gotten so sick before waiting in the sun (inadequate shade at stop on 16th Street and Van Buren and on 12th Street and Indian School Road) because a bus was so late - sometimes a normal 15 minute wait time can span 45 minutes at 115° heat. No one in the Valley Metro organization cares about their customer base because they don't have to be. read more

I have to take the bus every week and for the most part the drivers are good. But about 20 % are really bad. Last week I caught the bus 7th street bus 5098 at Indian school and 7th st. I had a hip replacement 71 yrs old and walk with a cane. The driver made us show our ID even a gentleman that was 87 and looked 95. He enjoyed doing this to us. As we were going north on 7th st at one stop a young lady about 13-15 was getting on and she had a cup of water in a hard Starbucks cup he started yelling at her and she said she was diabetic and needed the water, she then started crying and he kicked her off the bus. He is a bully and loves to pick on people.From now on I will not ride on a bus he is driving. read more

The most inefficient transit system in America. Lately the buses have been 15 minutes or more late! It's too crowded and the buses run in long frequencies in rush hour. Instead of 15 minutes, they should try every 7 or 5. Because of constant schedule changes, you have to use the site to find out if the bus is late, on time, etc. Don't ever rely on Google Maps to give you arrival times. They seriously need to rethink how their buses run as well. For instance the LINK routes, are the smartest routes! They go super fast and only stop every 1 mile or so. If they had routes that did this every hour, and extended out to the west valley, they'd have it covered, instead of it being completely absent of service like it is now. The Camelback bus departs and arrives from 107th Avenue every weekday, however it doesn't need to, no one rides it out there. It should stop at 67th ave & 83rd ave usually and every hour it should head to Dysart at least (with it having 1 mile or more designated stops as well). It may have seemed like a good investment because of Dust Devil park and Camelback Ranch, but no one is going to ride it out there because the 101 is only a mile away! Also the Hayen/McKlintock bus is always off by 5-10 minutes of the routes it travels through. They should seriously adjust the schedule back at least 10 minutes. The Bell Rd bus seriously needs to run in higher frequency! They have no love for North Phoenix at all! I have no clue why 19th Avenue goes all the way out to Pinnacle Peak. Went all the way out there for a job once, but there were only a few passengers besides myself. I think all the North-Southbound buses would be good if they went a mile or less north of the 101. Very few east-west routes run to or past the 101. I think VM should work on attracting commuters that in these areas. At least expand the Express and Rapid buses to reach them! I wish that they refused people who defecated themselves and decide to go somewhere. Where are the standards? I understand it's public transit, but you're losing out passengers! They really need to get new buses. Sooner or later they will completely break down. I already experienced a few breakdowns this year, and it's not looking good for most of your routes. Another con is that the buses don't run late at all. Some routes end at 7, some at 10. I think the earliest it should end would be at 11. Valley Metro you have a lot of issues. But hey it's transit. Your asinine policy leaves riders stranded. Every other bus was supposed to go to the end of the line at rush hour. The 1st bus had a sign indicating that it would only go to metro center. I waited for the 2nd bus only to get kicked off at metro center. The driver (Julian C., Operator 522) would not give me a transfer pass, and I didn't have an all day pass since I was only going 1 way on a single line. Tonight I was waiting at my stop to get a ride home. I arrived at the stop approximately 15 minutes before the scheduled arrival of the bus. When the bus approached, it did not slow down and drove past. This was with me waving my arms for it to stop on the side of the road, while it was passing. I called the Valley Metro Line to see when the next pickup time would be. They told me that the bus that passed was the last run of the night. They told me they were sorry it did not stop, that the next run wouldn't be until the next morning and there were no other lines that ran past where I lived. I asked what my options would be and if they could help my find a way home, they said I could fill out a comment form and they would get back to me sometime, and they couldn't help me out. I'm a veteran with a broken back. While my back is healed, it still hurts to go excessive distances walking. read more

They take no responsibility for there bus drivers poor behavior to riders. I just got yelled and screamed at by a driver last week because he flew by me. Valley Metro is wildly inconsistent between towns. If I ride in Phoenix, I can count on problems with old buses breaking down, no A/C, crabby bus drivers and people. If I cross the border into Scottsdale, whoa! What just happened? Now I'm on a multi-million dollar electric bus that is all shiny and new and the bus runs every 20 minutes and everyone is pleasant???? And whoa again, if I cross from Scottsdale to Tempe, now there are some free buses and lightrail and a whole bunch of options not available in any other town? And whoa, if I cross over into Glendale or Peoria, there are NO buses (literally no bus routes!). Hey, City of Phoenix, can we call this city METRO Phoenix and provide consistent bus service across every town within the METRO area? Valley metro has got to be one of the wackest transit systems in the nation. I've been in Az for 5 years now, I live in Mesa take the bus to work. Buses are unpredictable. You have to hope the bus is late because it's the only guarantee that's you'll have a smooth ride. If the bus is early, then the driver is going to make a pit stop to have a cigarette while he/she still has passengers or they like to show up early, leave you waiting on the bus while the driver goes to Mcdonalds or another restaurant. I had a bus stop right in front of my apartment complex and had to chase the bus an extra block because the driver was trying to get to the Jack in the box on the corner of Sycamore and Main and passed my stop early EVERY MORNING. read more

The lightrail is my main form of transportation. I also ride the 19c (METS on Google Maps) a lot which is free. It makes my life much easier, and it really needs to run 24 hours. If they cut the security checks, they could afford it. The security guards are often rude and have harassed me for no reason. There are some nice ones that stick out too though. The buses are often late or early and seemingly not reliable. That being said, I usually enjoy the pleasant demeanor of the drivers. Go with the rail if you can. read more

I gave the star for the bus they were nice with bike carriers and a ramp for motorized transit. The driving, the schedule, the convenience of stops, and the office support are the pits. Anybody get that VRU to work at a bus stop? I tried at three different stops, but ordinary traffic noise renders it deaf, and then the key entry doesn't work. The final insult was once again being carried to the far side of the intersection on the late bus so I could wait for the crossing signal while watching my last chance to get where I was going in time pull away. Having never needed to take an alternate mode of transportation to get anywhere in the valley my first time using Valley Metro was the worst experience I've ever had. Getting a bus pass was easy, boarding at a stop no problem. Disembarking was the issue. Having never taken the bus I was unaware of the need to push a button or pull a cord to signal a requests to stop at the next pickup/drop off. The bus drive was rude when I said i need to get off at the stop they were stopped at. Said "I'm not a mind reader" then proceeded to just resume the route. I got off at the next stop still close to my destination. Maybe the driver was having as off day but still a little courtesy or a different kinder answer or an explanation of you need to push the button or pull the cord would have made the experience a lot better read more

So this morning, when it rains, and I had to stand on an overcrowded bus, the driver took the turn and my feet slipped out from under me. I injured my wrist elbow and shoulder. LOL if you don't have your drivers license get one!!! Last year, (2015) I got my license at 19 so I was a little over due for it. Scottsdale valley metro could possible be the worst form of public transportation I've ever taken, the bus drivers and extremely rude and not even that helpful half the time, plus the bus drives by my bus stop literally every single day and always misses me. I even had a driver tell me no one is usually there so he just keeps driving past. Yet I'm there everyday and he misses me causing me to have to wait for the next freaking bus. I'm so irritated I pay 64 dollars a month for this and I barely get to ride the bus cuz half the time I end up taking a cab from the bus stop! The metro line is the worst I have seen of any major US cities in terms of availability and customer service. It stops running at 11pm at the airport and only runs every 30 mins off peak hours. VALLEY METRO has to be the biggest PISS POOR public transportation system in the USA. I decided to run some errands in phoenix today, and since I rode in from Chandler with my girlfriend, the Valley Metro Bus was my way of getting around. I started at 3rd street & Thomas & wanted to go to 16th street and Northern. This is a 20 minute ride in a car, just about 7 miles. The round trip took over 3.5 hours. This is one of the reasons that the "Valley of the Sun" will always be second to other large cities. The leaders keep trying to get large companies/business to relocate here, so this place can rely on more than just "real-estate" & "tourism". My understanding is that Phoenix & the metro area is the 5th largest city in the nation. Yet we have a transit system that was made way back in the 60's & other than adding routes & extending current routes it hasn't grown with the population or the times. The last time that I used the "METRO" to get from point A to point B was 2005. Today March 14 2014, its NO BETTER!!!! To Keep a long story short & a pass on a bunch of bitching (that will never get to who it needs to get to anyway) I will just say that in short, this buss system is VERY DISAPOINTING! To be honest, it just plain sucks! Valley Metro & (East Valley Metro Contractor) Veolia, get your act together & make a transit system that other cities would look to for their growth. Be proud of a product that you offer to your customers.
