Where I live in Tempe, I can walk to the end of my street, hop on an Orbit which takes me to the main Bus Depot or can drop me off closer to the Light Rail stop off of Mill Ave. Not bad, right? I actually am enjoying the clustering of a real Bus Depot not anywhere near a residential area with plenty of security, lighting, public enough space in an easily accessible location in Tempe. I actually feel safe hanging out here at night and when I ride my bike to the station, all the bike racks face the security and transit office, so never had an issue with my bicycle here either. The buses themselves are fine, I have had some very bad moments on the bus with the passengers (ie the 1st time I got on a Phoenix bus, a knife-fight broke out and I had to stay for a police report, another time two guys were reading hard porn right across from me), but its kinda nice mixing with people rather then being in a car-tomb. What I very much have an issue with is most bus stations. I have had bums passed out (dead?) on the seat, meth heads, a single sign with no seating in the hot blazing sun (I am looking at you Scottsdale), seats no shade around, fights break out at stations. I try to call the metro, they say it isn't their issue. Call the police non-emergency number, they say its the Metro jurisdiction. For this very bad situation alone, I don't take the bus at night since all the stations near the arts area and central are not well lit, full of sketchy people and the buses take too long to come by (if they even stop). For this I am grateful for the light rail for late night Phoenix excursions. Metro still has a lot of work to do, but considering the improvements I have seen with public transportation and bicycle awareness in the past 3 years, it seems to be going on the right route. read more

I would really love to give Valley Metro more stars. Really, I would. I am a large proponent of taking the bus when I can. I do own a car, so it is not for lack of other transportation that I frequently take the bus. It is for the simple reason that Stevey stated-- Valley Metro will supply more routes when the demand is there. And Phoenix can't afford to have so much sprawl and no form of mass transit. If we would all just suck it up and step away from our SUVs for one to two trips a week, Valley Metro might have the funds to have a ligitimate system! Honestly, the buses are nice. Mostly, they are clean and on-time. You can check the schedule at www.ValleyMetro.org before you go so you will know the fatest route to take. You can even plan your route from there. It's cheap-- only $1.25 to ride, and free transfers for the next two hours. You just definintely need to set aside a good chunk of time to get where you're going! read more

i was very happy with my bus experience today - first and only, though it may be. I was up at a marriott on black canyon freeway and wanted to go downtown for some touring. besides the fact that everyone i asked said "but i don't understand why you want to go there" they also informed me that the bus was slow and rarely made it's posted arrival time. though i walked the wrong direction i found myself at a transit center at the metro center mall and caught the red line eastbound, greeted as i entered by a jovial singing bus driver. and not the annoying kind. i showed him what the transit girl had given me by way of directions (more in a second) and he made sure i got to the stop i needed. when i transferred to the #15 bus, that driver was very nice and helpful too, and though he too didn't understand why i would be traveling to phoenix, he wished me well and let me know when he'd be on the return trip if i wanted a ride back. and in fact on my ride back i got on the red line from central station and was greeted by happy singing bus driver #1 who remembered me! so, i would give this whole day a 4 star score except that the website is stupid and it told me i needed to take the 122 to the 15 to the 19 to get downtown when all i really needed to do was take the red line the whole way. that would have saved me a lot of walking and waiting at a bus stop with crazy homeless men screaming at each other while i waited to transfer. that's all i'm saying. read more

80% of the drivers are great at their job. They just drive and go on their day without bothering anyone or saying anything offensive to me as a disabled passenger. I am not physically disabled but suffer from brain traumas, so I'm limited in a few of my functions. I've been harrassed twice by drivers. I have a service dog. There are only two legal questions that you can ask me as a public entity: 1. Is that a service dog? 2. What tasks does it perform? But my biggest complaint is to a driver on route 61W. I rode the bus on April 28, 2016 @ 9:30am, bus 6687. I got on the bus and this happened: "That's not a service dog." "Yes she is, she has the right to be here with me." "It's a pit bull. It's not a service dog. Read the signs." "There aren't any breed restrictions to service dogs. You're out of line and will get reported." "Go ahead, but I'm right. It's not a service dog." I need this driver reprimanded for discriminating against me. Either fire him or make him volunteer for 6 months at an animal shelter. His ignorance is what makes me give 1 star. The bus system is an absolute joke! I am originally from Tucson and I thought Sun Tran was bad. Boy how wrong I was. I have always been an advocate for public transit and strongly support its use. However after using Valley Metro, I can see why everyone drives everywhere; its not a feasible means of transport. First of all the scheduling is terrible. Outside of peak hours it can be as regular as 30 to 40 minute intervals. Of course that is assuming the bus even comes! Especially on route 44, there might be several scheduled busses that simply do not show. I have regularly waited up to 50 minutes for the bus to show only to give up and call a cab or walk. In more than one instance walking proved the faster choice. During peak hours the buses are often crowed. Usually its not to bad as long as the ac is working. Pray that the AC doesn't go out; the smell in the busses becomes unbearable. The drivers are rude and not very helpful. First time users beware, the drivers expect you to be expert travlers of the bus system, asking questions about payment, routes, times, transfers, or other bus transport related issues is frowned upon by drivers. In summation: don't depend on the bus, it will probably be late if it even shows up. Valley Metro is really a slap in the face to public transportation everywhere. read more

Overall, the experience is exactly that. A bus ride. You run into crazies, overhear crazier conversation and start to think crazy things. But hell, I don't have a car so I enjoy the ride and observe the people and learn to plug my nose. Generally, the bus drivers are great, friendly and polite. I don't want to say there are no cracks in the egg though, so I just grin and bear it. But be warned, if you're a fraction of a second late - the bus will leave without you despite how close you are to the door (for the majority of the time). Lots of routes are being cut/eliminated/reduced, so plan for more time in your schedule. What gets me going are the people that try to jump on without fare and the bus driver kicks them off or the metro police do the same. Just don't sit where the wheelchairs are placed, if at all avoidable. More than likely you'll have to move and just may lose a place to sit. Take a supply of an anti-bacterial product with you so you don't leave the bus with pnemonia or mrsa or worse. Bring headphones to drown out the noise of screaming babies and get a laugh at the expense of others. read more

The Valley Metro bus system is utterly atrocious. The route I took yesterday arrived on time, but my connection showed up five minutes early, and left those trying to make the connection stranded in the extreme heat for a half hour. I had to call a Lyft to get to my destination on time. This morning the same exact route at the same time was ten minutes late. This is a common occurrence. I very often miss my connection due to the busses not adhering to the schedule. The busses simply do not run on time. The tax payers support Valley Metro. The bad scheduling, and poor customer service are not acceptable. I have ridden public transportation in big cities that run like clockwork with clean busses, good customer service, and enforcement of safety policies. This review is totally skewed! So after reading this DO NOT sell your car, move closer to a bus stop, or buy a year long bus pass! I am one of the very lucky few who lives 2 minutes walk to a bus stop, has one connection that arrives 3 minutes after my first bus drops me off, and then gets dropped off directly in front of my work. I also travel through Scottsdale & Tempe, so my fellow commuters are mainly business/student types. And the bus is on average about 1/2 full. It's pretty perfect. BUT...when I tell other people I take the bus, their face squishes all up like they just sucked on a lemon and they just can't believe that I take the bus willingly. Here are the reasons that I am assuming 99% of the people I talk to have negative associations with the bus. -On the majority, the scheduling is HORRIBLE. Buses on major routes might run 15 minutes, but others only run ever 30 or even worse every hour. So if you have to make a connection, you might have a bit of a wait, which can make a trip to a destination 5 miles away an hour ordeal. That would suck -Buses only have capacity to store 2 bikes. Since bus stops are mainly only on major roads if you live in a big neighborhood, or in a less developed area, most would ride a bike to the bus stop. Well, if the bus pulls up and there are already 2 bikes in the bike rack, what are you suppose to do? Ditch your bike? yeah, I'm guessing that isn't an option, looks like you are waiting for the next bus & hoping it's bike rack isn't full...and I really hope this isn't one of the buses that only runs ever hour, and its the middle of July! -Your bus route is a popular one. It's great for the environment when lots of people ride the bus, but not so great when you are stuck standing, squished between 6 people, you have no idea where everyone's hands are, AND, we all live in Arizona, not everyone is going to smell of roses. The transport vehicles of the 21st Century are a far cry from the busses used in the 70's, but dissapointingly, a soft one. I think the drivers were friendlier, too, but the world has become more narcisistical where people seem to be watching their back more then when I rode the bus as my main mode of transportation as a young pup on his own in the big city. Even the drivers are on guard. Why? I'm just trying to get a ride and learn the system of "no transfers"! Are you serious? ...2 dollars every time I step on a new bus is a bit much, but hey, if that's what you get, can ya be a little more patient with my inquiry on where I can purchase a $4 Day Pass? In 40 years I've never had to use public transportation, but unfortunately I will be for the next couple months. The first several weeks have been absolutely horrible. Most of the drivers are super rude and extremely lazy. Today I left the gym and waited 20 minutes for a bus and while doing so was messing around on my phone. I looked up to see my bus driving past my stop. I'm clearly sitting here waiting for the bus, why wouldn't they stop? It's their responsibility to stop at all of the stops on their route. I used to think McDonald's employees were crazy for wanting $15/hour, but now I think they should cut these dipshit driver's salaries and donate the difference. read more

What can I say that everyone who uses this system doesn't already know?? Pros: - Pretty Clean Buses (excluding those in city of phx boundary) - reasonable rates (although i think they are starting to get greedy and I am not seeing a return as a customer for the increases. - SOME very friendly drivers. Cons: - Zero regard for transfer times and unacceptable "early" stops that ruin transfers and cause customers to miss their bus (this is not rare). - SOME absolutely rude and seemingly empowered employees that are more than happy threatening a paying customer with throwing them off the bus than listening to a legitimate complaint because of their fragile egos. - UNIONS - I would love to love unions jn theory they really benefit employees and allow fair pay and treatment from the company, but in reality they allow employees a sense of power to treat customers rudely believing they are untouchable. They also can't ever let an opportunity to strike and demand pay rates way above industry standards. Haven't we learned anything from the auto industry and Detroit (where i was born in the suburbs of)??? - Know your damn routes!! How is it acceptable that you drive a route but cannot answer the simplest of questions about destinations, intersections, connections, or anything? Why is management not requiring this of its drivers. - Rude to anyone asking a question about the route they are driving. I have heard on numerous occasions a driver telling a customer (even old ladies, and young confused teens/children) that they "just drive the bus" go get a bus book! Pathetic! - Listen, we ALL will not be using the light rail, maybe if you had a decent urban planner and began the project 15-20 years ago our air wouldn't be approaching that of Beijing. They are not reliable. If you want to waste your whole day and don't have anything else to do but go on a bus use this system. It is not efficient. I use the paratransit service and they leave without me when I'm on time waiting. I try to get the taxi back but they say "sorry, we cant go back." Not only that but they bring me to my destination two hours early. It takes me fifty minutes to get where I want to go. I love spent five hours of my day either on the bus or waiting for it. Not Happy! No wonder people are waiting so long for their busses. Their transportation is sitting outside my complex (8th street by Fitch Park in Mesa) spewing their exhaust and adding to noise pollution while the drivers sit reading (or are often nowhere to be seen). They can't all have to use the bathroom facillities that often. Hmmm! Just came home and TWO of them (are there really two busses on the same route in this sparsely populated area?) were sitting there for over 25 minutes. Still don't know if/when they left. Ever since this route was established, I have joked about how there is a bus either coming, going or sitting there at any given time. However, this is no longer a joke since recently more often than not, there are TWO busses parked at the same time . Can't they find a NON-residential area in which to waste their time and gas? Every time I pass them, I can't help but think about how many waiting passengers must be sitting out in this miserably hot August heat while their bus drivers are reading in their empty air conditioned buses...and getting paid for it. Is this why they don't have time to wait for passengers who are frantically running to catch a bus and why they are so inconsiderately pulling out in front of traffic rather than waiting until it is safe...so they can reach their destination and do nothing? I understand they have schedules, but if they are always that far ahead of schedule that they can spend half or more of their day in my back yard, is it possible that perhaps a schedule adjustment would be in order, or do we just turn a blind eye to waste in another tax subsidized program? The government never has been known for it's efficiency. Why start now in this time of economic crisis? When the cooler fall weather returns, my neighbors and I would love to once again be able to enjoy being out in our yards WITHOUT the smell of exhaust and the constant sound of busses coming and going...or worse yet, sitting around idling for long periods of time! This bus company is a hit or a miss at best! My experiences on this bus system have been split. Some drivers are very nice and yet others will not spit on a person if they were on fire! As a person in a wheelchair I have special needs for securement and some drivers will actually refuse to put on my restraints because " it is not their job"! The only reason I'm not giving 5 is the misguided bus driver. After asking the driver if he dropped off at 'Pecos', not 1 but, 2 times, and he agreed both times, we wound up in Chanlder/Gilbert border NOT on Pecos. My mistake in thinking there was only 1 Pecos stop. Newbie me had no idea. It was easier when our parents pinned our bus stop destination on our shirt when we were 6! Stranded, about 8 miles away from my park n'ride, I was advised to call their help number. So, I called Customer Service who transfered me to Wanda, the dispatcher. I've never talked with someone so nice, helpful and compassionate - THIS is how customer service is supposed to be...HP, Dell, are you listening?! She not only tried to find me other buses to link and other routes to my stop, but in the end, tracked down a site supervisor Bob, down the road, luckily he was on a run, and took me to where I needed to go. He was so nice and understanding, I didn't feel like a total doornob. Tell you what, I can't think of anywhere else where their customer service was actually helpful, and hope these guys at least get a bonus, stipend or something. As a way to see a little bit of the metro area on my way down to Chase Field it was decided that we would take the light rail. The light rail is very easy to use, clean and reliable. Definitely the best way to not deal with traffic and parking especially if you're headed downtown or to an ASU football game. Make sure you've got your ticket as fare officers do patrol the cars, at least the couple times I rode it they did. You really can't beat $4 for an all day ride ticket. Much cheaper than the $9 day pass here in Denver. read more

I've lived in the metro areas of Seattle, and Los Angeles and took public transportation in both areas. Believe me, Valley Metro is NOT public transportation. It is a piecemeal system of disjointed bus routes and one light rail line that operate independent of each other. Last year, fares were raised from an already expensive price to a weird fee structure--a much higher price on the bus versus other means....now what dim-bulb thought this was good for the "Public?" Oh, did I mention that services was REDUCED along with the increase in fares? Yeah...that makes sense. I was told by Valley Metro that the fares were not unlike other metro areas similar to Phoenix. Oh really? Of the 4 larger cities in this country, how many don't provide service after around 9 pm on most routes? Pity the poor graveyard shift worker...guess you are not part of the "Public." The light rail is a definite step in the right direction, but it is rendered useless for those who must endure the bus system to get to-and-from the stations. The bus system is extremely unreliable and doesn't provide convenient connections to and from the light rail stations. Well folks, this is just part 1 of my yelp. For about the past 2 weeks now and because I use handicap fair the drivers have been getting extremely rude with me. And just because I look young they think I don't look disabled. After getting on bus a few minutes ago he speeded up and I jolted forward and had to brace myself. I am hearing impaired and learning impaired. I have four different things wrong with spine. One DDD and bone spurs at multiple places. Since when does he have the right to treat me that cuz he don't think I look handicap??? I am handicap. I have DDD in multiple places in my spine and bone spurs in my spine at multiple places and he gonna act like I'm not handicap???. Just because I look young he gonna think I'm a lazy ass free loader when I earned my you know what SSDI benefits!!!!!! HUUUGGGEEE shoutout to valley metro and their lovely transit center on 5th street and Veterans Way in Downtown Tempe. I work afternoons into the night and i dont drive yet, so public transit is VERY handy to get home for a college student like me. I always feel safe when im at the transit center after work, as there's lots of witnesses and security around if something were to happen to me. I just wish there were more accordion buses in tempe for north and south routes, as those are the coolest buses out there imo, but thats okay! TIP: if you don't really know where you're going on your route or are in need of directions, the bus drivers will gladly assist you in making sure you get where you need to go. Public transportation is the greatest gift of Tempe, and I wish I could give all the bus and light rail drivers a hug and a quesadilla as a token of appreciation for making sure i get home safe after work late at night. 10/10 best customer service ever. Would give zero Stars if possible but it's not. Valley Metro is the biggest joke of transportation possible. The buses are never on time ever! The drivers are not friendly or helpful or courteous! When the masks were required the drivers weren't wearing the mask half the time in the homeless people on the bus weren't wearing the masks! Half the routes don't run on Saturdays and Sundays yet they were on Monday through Friday so what the f***** up with that! If you do not have a vehicle and have to rely on the bus well I'm sorry you're up s***'s creek expect to be late to everything! For six months having a temp job after often being late because of the bus being late I lost it. After moving on and getting hired to a great paying job, relying on Phoenix Metro I think I lost this one too. Today on my first day after my orientation leaving TWO hours early the first bus was reliably late, the second didn't even stop for me. The transmission in my car died at worst time possible so I have to rely on public transport and my bike again, (not happy). I met a few phenomenal Metro bus drivers who cared about their passengers and what they're jobs mean to people. I've seen first hand one driver who would pull up further than the bus stop to make older ladies and me,(I just made 60), wait after their break in the Phoenix heat to walk extra steps to get on. I understand how dealing with the public can be a challenge but I don't understand treating paying customers this way. I literally watched another well paying job pass by. I'm sure the two Metro employees i saw on the bus not stopping for me thought it was funny. I wish on you what I've had to endure on them and their bosses. Tax money at work, huh? read more

Not sure why they drive at exactly one-half the posted speed limit (this am on the 65 S he was clocked at 26 in a posted 45 so he sped up a bit). It literally adds a half an hour to the commute. I've been riding public transportation in LA for the better part of 15 years, maybe even longer. Riding the bus here in Phoenix using noticeably better experience. Here is one example. The other day I was going to a job interview in an area where the bus runs once an hour. I was quite excited about it and I was talking to the driver as I always do. She dropped me off and wished me well As I was leaving my interview going out to catch the bus I was nearly 3 blocks away from the bus stop when I saw the bus approaching. NOTE: I can no longer run because of a bad motorcycle accident a few years ago (she didn't know this) so I simply waved and sighed. I could see in the distance she had stopped and no one got off the bus. So I stilted over there as quickly as I could. She had stopped for me and waited to let me on the bus. I've only been here in Phoenix for a little over 30 days and I rode the bus many of those days. I've had countless wonderful experiences and 2 displeasing ones. Be it they were bad but not noteworthy So I'll not pay them anymore lip service. Back to the brighter side and my reasoning for giving five stars to this transportation system. Every driver that I've observed minds very closely a list that sits in the center of the wheel or just to the right of it. On them are the names of all the major intersections on the route and the times they are supposed to be there. Then directly to their left and slightly above their head is a GPS device. Not only does the GPS device tell the driver there running ahead of time but so does the list to their right which is easier to read. These people driving the buses deal with all kinds of BS. But I have yet to see any of them deviate from this practice of waiting until their bus is again on schedule at every major intersection listed in the time points to the right and on the GPS. Nor have I noticed any of them being impatient or crappy. Hey life is what you make it. I know some people who have a crappy time no matter what and I almost think that they're dead set on having a crappy time. Yes the bus has some creatures on it in human skin that smell like various awful things sometimes. But remember we all have something in common with them. A need to get somewhere and there you are on the bus doing just that. So live with it. The absolute most terrible service EVER. This company needs to get with it cause these buses are terrible. Couple weeks ago I waited for the bus on 59th avenue and Thunderbird. It was already RU no g late as it was and the idiot just drove right past us (the bus was in service by the way) he stopped at first because he realized he passed us but when we were walking to him he just continued to drive off. What an asshole. The bus on 59th and Glendale showed up 90 minutes late and while were all standing out i On the hot sun. The last bus leaves at 9:30 which is so inconvenient for the ones who get off work late. I work at arrowhead and don't get off until 10:30. I don't get that. A busy mall area like that needs later buses. California is so much better. They run every 20 minutes for 24 hours. These buses here are always late but the day you're a minute Late arriving at a stop they shown up to early. Your best bet of getting around az is by a car or a cab (and a cab is so damn expensive). You can complain to these idiots all you want they don't give a care in the world. Those of you giving them good reviews are too new. Wait til you start taking them more like I have the last 5 years. read more

If you are a visitor to this city and don't have plans to leave the greater phoenix area consider the bus and rail system. Ended up using the system to get around for a grand total of $3.50/day which gave me unlimited rides for the whole day. A word of warning i met quite a few scammers one gig is the obama supporters give a story about needing some money for a unused full day ticket DON'T do it the ticket looks real but is a fake and they do have farecheckers that check randomly. read more

Horrible!!! Explore other options especially if you need to be somewhere on time. By far, the worst system I have experienced in any major city that I've been to including but not limited to NYC, Chicago, Toronto, Miami and San Francisco. (I must say tho that the buses in LA run a close second to being the worst.) The light rail (train) system, however, is excellent (Valley Metro also). Dependable, clean, no limit on bicycles and physically challenged people have plenty of room. Limited (but growing) east bound and west bound service areas. Great to get to Tempe and downtown Phoenix. Great schedules. In the 1-1/2 years I've been regularly taking the valley metro bus...... The Cons: 1. The buses frequently arrive early and will not wait for you. Then.....they will generally stop down the road to play "catchup" with the schedule at a location, usually a Circle K, where they will get off the bus and "take a break" while you sit on the bus. Sometimes they take these breaks even if the bus is on schedule. I understand that sometimes they just have to stop for those "times" - but coffee or cigarette breaks? .My recommendation - arrive 10 minutes before the scheduled stop time. 2. Or....the buses frequently arrive late. Always have a "Plan B" - allow some extra time in your schedule. I understand occasional delays due to traffic, etc. but I think it's the Circle K's that are killing the schedule. 3. Or....the buses don't arrive at all. Who does that? Yep....just no bus.....back to Plan B. 4. Or...the buses will sometimes just drive by you when you are clearly standing at the stop - often with many other people, at major intersections......um....isn't their job to give people rides? There are some days that are really special.....I get a late one, a no show and then to end my lovely day, have a bus just drive right by us. That day took me 2-1/2 hrs. to get home - normally an hour ride. 5. 95% of the drivers are unfriendly, and at times just plain rude. Do not expect to be respected or appreciated as a customer. 6. I do not always feel safe on the bus, especially the later evening routes. My general routes are #81, #17 & #62. 7. The buses do break down and on occasion get into accidents. Been there done that. 8. The cloth seating in the buses are dirty. I don't want to even go there. Don't wear white on a bus. 9. Each bus can hold 3 bicycles. If you are #4......tough luck...you have to wait for the next bus. 10. The scheduling sucks. Lots of old, run down buses. 11. Don't assume that since these drivers are operating a large bus, that they are qualified to be good drivers. Comfort is not on their agenda. The Pros: 1. Get an all day pass before you start your journey. Good prices especially if you have to take multiple buses in one day. Their web site will tell you the rates and where you can purchase tickets ahead. 2. 5% of the drivers are pleasant, polite and will wait for you if they see you running for the bus - since connections can be very tight.. Run Forrest Run! 3. The biggest pro.....I will not have to depend on the bus once I'm able to get my next car. read more
