They are very helpful. The employees tell you what is happening and make you feel compfortable. They do little things like having warm blankets. THe tell you want eye drops they are putting in and why. Dr. Vrabek is professional and really good at what he does. After having this catarac syrgery done I feel like a fifth grader that can see again when I got my first glasses. It is so cool to not have to reach for my glasses in the morning. While the medical care was generally satisfactory, I had a very disappointing experience with how the claim was billed. There was a lack of transparency regarding charges, and I received an unexpected bill after my visit. I attempted to resolve the issue by contacting the billing office within two weeks of receiving the bill, but the response back was slow and after their research, the billing office confirmed it was an error on how the appointment was entered into the system and due to the timing, there was nothing they could do. I am now being held responsible of a billing charge that was in fact their confirmed error and it was told to me that they would use this as training. I strongly believe that patients deserve clear, upfront communication about costs and responsive customer service when concerns arise. I hope this office takes steps to improve the accuracy of their billing process. I ultimately decided to seek care elsewhere where I feel more supported and informed. read more

Had surgery on May 5th with Dr Vrabec to have a panoptix multifocal lens put in. During the lens implant, there was a intern who was asking questions about the implantation. I did not sign off on having a intern there during the lens implant. It is now June 21st, and I have had fuzzy/ blurry vision at near, medium, and far vision, since the day the surgery was done. I do believe my vision is worse now than before the implant. Perhaps it will clear up, but the office already suggested taking out the current lens and putting in a different type of lens. Wanted to get this information out there, so other individuals can make the proper choices with their eye care. read more

Had cataract surgery. The care was fine, but quite expensive. The billing system is primitive. I've seen roadside vegetable stands with better billing options. Despite being unable to provide an estimate of costs they require payment upfront. Its like going to a car repair place and being told, we need $500 to look at your car and if the repair doesn't cost that much we will give you some money back. There also were costs not included. I was billed separately for anaesthesia and could not get those costs in advance either. That was about $600 for a person to put six eye drops in my eye. I saw the anaesthesiologist for 1 minute (I actually timed it). That is a rate of $36,000 per hour. When I talked to someone about billing, I was basically told its because I have high deductible insurance. I still don't understand why high deductible insurance would prevent them from telling me how much the procedure costs. There is zero patient privacy. The woman in the OR prep area next to me was five foot three inches and weighed 200 pounds. She has diabetes, takes insulin, metformin, a statin and a few other medications. I knew her name because she checked in behind me and I heard it as I walked away. She told the nurse that she lied to her employer and was taking off the rest of the week off. read more

The doctors are great, the problem is with the front office. Many times, they don't answer the phone and let it go into voicemail which is fine if they are that busy but when the voicemail tells you to leave a message, and that someone will call you right back they should do that, but they never call back. Leaving a message on their website requesting that someone contacts you for an appointment doesn't work either, I think they just ignore them too. Good doctors but the front office makes it really difficult to get an appointment to see any of them. read more

After 3 weeks on the job you are expected to do the job in your sleep, without all the necessary training to be able to do the job. Team mates are not friendly or helpful. I was told that my procedure would be life changing. I knew it wouldn't be perfect but I can't even see more than 10 feet in front of me. I sent a message to the pre op doctor and got no response. I was told by many workers I'll be able to see without glasses and that is a lie. I am stuck with crap vision now. I wouldn't believe all the positive stories or there. They won't guarantee that your vision will turn out nor contact you back. Save your money and go on vacation. I wish I would have. read more

I have had two cataract and corneal transplants in the last 5 months from Dr Vrabec and they yielded phenomenal results! I would recommend Dr Vrabec and his staff and rate them as top notch. Went from 20/80 vision with glasses in my right eye to 20/20 vision WITHOUT glasses!! The left eye was 20/60 with glasses and now as of today it's 20/25 WITHOUT glasses!! No one at Valley Eye ever bothered to mention that the surgery center, Pinnacle, would also be charging massive charges for cataract surgery. I was told by Valley Eye surgery coordinator that the cost for the cataract surgery with laser would be $4000. Tough decision to make. And I even asked if there were any other charges. Nope. No mention that Pinnacle will charge another $4000--$7000. Luckily my insurance covered part of that. I am only left with another $4000. So angry at VALLEY EYE!! They insist they didn't know about Pinnacle charges. I get that it is a different facility, but they must be aware there are charges occurring!!!! read more

I was referred to them by my optometrist for cataract issues. My first exam was with an ophthalmologist 4/21. At that time I was told my eyes weren't bad enough for insurance to pay for the surgery, but that they would most definitely be ready by October. I should plan on the surgery then, but call for something sooner if my eyes showed a big change. 8/21 I called to schedule an appointment because of some major vision issues. I explained the previous appointmen and what the doctor had said, only to be told there was NO record of it. Then, I could not get an appointment until 16/9. To add to that, the earliest surgery wouldn't be until 12/21 for one eye, then 1/22 for the second. Absolutely nothing could be done; I couldn't see anyone sooner than that, no matter where I offered to go. This experience seriously gave me no confidence in trusting them with care in testing, much less surgery for my vision! read more

Just completed cataract lens replacement in both eyes. Everyone I talked to recommended Dr. Vrabec. I've had glasses since I was a kid, astigmatism, and a really bad cataract in one eye. I could not imagine having life without glasses, but that's where I'm at! Super happy that I opted for the laser surgery and fancier lenses. The world is brighter, sunsets and sunrises have such great colors, and I have ditched my prescription glasses for a pair of non-prescription Ray Bans. Everything went smoothly and it's amazing. Decided to get Lasik surgery and the process was smooth and easy! You get a free consultation to see if you are a viable candidate for the surgery. Then you get one more evaluation done which is a easy process. Then the surgery. The people who help you make the process go smoothly and are knowledgeable. The surgery is not as scary as i thought. After surgery is where the hard process starts. The pain is not that bad but you have to wear these weird plastic eye patches that they tape on your face and you have to wear it all day after surgery and when you sleep. The pain after surgery for me was rough. But they prescribe you painkillers which helped a lot. It's been 4 days after surgery and I have 20/20 and no pain or irritation. I definitely recommend anyone that is considering getting LASIK. There are financial planning options also! read more

After a third surgery and more out of pocket expense I still have blurry vision in my left eye. my last visit revealed he cant fix the last problem that was created by the laser surgery he did (dr Vrabec) now I have to go see a specialist with a better laser and spend more money. I've been going here for years and the last two years were awful. Dr. Mark Austin is a very crabby man. Also doesn't look you in the eye when talking to you. It seems he doesn't like doing his job. Everything I asked him for or about seemed to be too much for him to do. It was I can't pull my staff off their job to do this for you. Excuse me aren't I paying you for it? Then complains about having to do his job from the diabetic eye exam that is required by the state for me to keep my job. Complaining about the government expecting him to do it. I have better things to do with my time. Well SIR I do to but I need this paper work for my job. I ill be looking for a Dr. that has time for his patients. I think it's time for him to retire. I am very satisfied and happy with the results I received after having YAG Laser Surgery to allow more light into my eyes as my lenses from cataract surgery in 2012 had clouded somewhat. My experience with the front desk staff, the physician assistants, and especially Dr. Jensen and Dr. Vrabec, were beyond my expectations due to their friendly yet efficient efforts to help me feel comfortable and informed about the different aspects of treatment and recovery. The results of the procedure were nothing less than breathtaking, literally, because when I arrived at home after the first eye was done and opened my smartphone, I gasped at how bright and clear the home screen was! I had been considering replacing my phone because I thought the battery was deteriorating - when the problem was with my eyes instead! I tell my family and friends that I can identify with the character of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz movie when her house landed in Oz and she opened the door to the vivid and colorful scenery of Oz, as compared to the drab black and white background in Kansas! Sometimes it can be hard to write good reviews. Especially 5 star reviews, but this one was very easy to write. I found Valley Eye Institute after doing some research in my own city of Houston, and since I am from Wisconsin and was heading home my choice became clear (pun intended). Sure there were some great places in Houston, but not like Valley. From my first call the staff was so kind, accommodating, and understanding that they frequently went over and above to ensure I had a great experience. The experience that is shared between all the doctors and nurses is really top notch. Everyone was very supportive and ready for me to have a successful procedure. It was quicker than even I expected and Dr. Vrabec did an amazing job with his staff it was a great experience. Then my pre op and follow up appointments with De. Melchert and Denise and the nurses was a very enjoyable experience. I could not have imagined a better one. Everything was explained step by step to where i could understand it and where there was no confusion. They really made sure i got the best treatment and care that was right for my eyes. The only thing I would have done different would be get it done sooner. The amazement of it every single day is mind blowing, and as i travel the world for work I get to see it in all natural HD. $$$$$$ TOTAL RIP OFF!!! $329 for a routine eye exam! 5-6 times what other optometrists in the Fox Valley are charging! Let the consumer beware. Call and ask for the price of an exam BEFORE making the appointment. They will not budge off the price if you ask for a discount. Cindy, the account supervisor told me if the cost is important to me, I can always call before making an appointment. Stupid me, I never expected 5-6 times what others charge! I will not be going back and I am posting as a warning to consumers to remember to check prices before you go. There was no issue with my insurance. My grievance is the OUTRAGEOUS COST when compared to other providers in the area. I would caution all potential clients to call around and compare prices, don't just call to schedule an appointment. You already know they charge $329. Optometrists are bound ethically to care for the health of our eyes. If they see something outside their expertise, they will refer patients to specialists. I had a cornea transplant on my left eye. That went well except Dr. Vrebek kept the same lens in which was the real reason along with the lens that it had to be replaced. I had cataract so 9 months later they replaced the lens. The hope was that the new lens and taking stitches out would alleviate the problem. It didn't and I cannot see clearly out of my left eye even with glasses. I was told that Dr. Vrabek was not going to do anything to make my sight better and I would always have blurred vision in my left eye. What a shame to waste a cornea transplant to get blurred vision no matter what is tried to improve it. I was told Dr. Vrabek was the best. You be the judge. If you want to have blurred vision for life I would highly recommend him. read more

Highly recommended folk and seem to be very reputable. I found the experience lacking. They first offered the option of exam and surgery the same day, which I took as the distances are large. Later they called and recommended against it. Next, they took my insurance information and said they would obtain my insurance contributions to help me make a decision. Later said they would not do so until after exam and I had made my decisions about which surgery and eyewear - which I thought was backward as I needed the insurance information to help me make a decision. These are big dollar items for me. The lady then said, very sarcastically, with a hint of anger, "Well, I can do it for you if you can't do it yourself." I just had LASIK surgery on Friday 1/26/2018. I could not be happier with the initial results. Everything has gone as I was told, and the staff and Dr. Vrabec were very welcoming and helpful. I had horrible vision and I have been in contacts/glasses since I was 12. I am now finally able to see very very clearly without them. It is amazing and changed my life. I love my doctor and everyone I have worked with there, up until one of the recentionists who was rude the last time I was there. I told her i was there to pick up glasses and indicated that I had my eyes examined last may and wasn't due for one, as it hadn't been a year yet. I requested an imediate appointment because I had some "new and strange " dark blobs appearing in my sight at various times. I got an apoinment within a week and had an excellent examination of my eyes. I was relieved to find that the "blobs" were as temporary as they appear to be and both eyes were in reasonable shape and very much as my "cataract exam" of 8 months ago had indicated.
